Andrew Tobias: My All-Time Favorite Species
Nothing matters more in guiding the species to a sustainable future than who runs the show. Just imagine how different things would have been if Gore had been president for eight years instead of Bush. If McCain/Palin had set the agenda these last three years instead of Obama/Biden. Or how different they will be if Romney/Bachmann, working with Rove, Scalia, Limbaugh, Boehner, Bork, and McConnell, get to set the agenda going forward.

Roger Ebert's Journal: "A Journey to the Center of the Mind" Spoilers abound. I watched Robert Zemeckis's "Contact" again a couple of weeks ago, so I could add it to the Great Movies Collection. In 1997 I had some questions, but this time it was even more clear that the movie ends in enigma and paradox. Like many movies, that has little bearing on its effect.
ROGER EBERT: "Contact" (1997; A Great Movie)
Contact is streaming on Netflix Instant. "Contact" is a film that takes place at the intersection of science, politics and faith. Those are three subjects that don't always fit easily together.
ROGER EBERT: "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962; A Great Movie)
John Ford and John Wayne together created much of the mythology of the Old West we carry in our minds. Beginning with "Stagecoach" (1939), continuing from 1948 through 1950 with the Cavalry Trilogy ("Fort Apache," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "Rio Grande"), and finally to 1962 and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," together in 10 features they largely formed the templates of the Hollywood Western. Of these "Liberty Valance" was the most pensive and thoughtful.

Gaetano Alberto "Guy" Lombardo (June 19, 1902 - November 5, 1977) was a Canadian-American bandleader and violinist.
Forming "The Royal Canadians" in 1924 with his brothers Carmen, Lebert, and Victor and other musicians from his hometown, Lombardo led the group to international success, billing themselves as creating "The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven."

Guy Lombardo... who also was into some pretty sweet racing boats. The Guy Lombardo Story
He was a well known and frequent visitor around here for his partnership with one of our local legends, Les Staudacher, who was a renowned boat builder, racing and otherwise. Guy and Les teamed up to make the first jet-powered aluminum hulled race boat (ALCOA sponsored) to attempt to break the world water speed record.

Les was test driving the boat in this photo. Alas, though, it was all for naught...
Lombardo's Jet Craft Explodes, Sinks in Bay
City, Mich., June 1 [1960] (UPI) - A jet-powered hydroplane, built specifically in an effort to crack the world speed record, exploded and sank in twelve feet of water in Saginaw Bay today. The thirty-one-foot craft, the Tempo-Alcoa, owned by Guy Lombardo, the bandleader, and the Aluminum Company of America, was being operated by remote-radio controls at the time of the accident. No one was aboard and there were no injuries. The boat, estimated to cost $300,000, was built and designed by Les Staudacher... He said it was speeding along at a "little under 200 miles an hour" when the accident occurred... He said he believed the boat struck some debris in the bay.
Lombardo had previously purchased boats from Les and raced them up and down the Saginaw River which is large enough for ship traffic from the bay through Bay City and down to Saginaw 20 miles away. Bay City hosts yearly the 'River Roar' boat races and is a favorite on the circuit I've read. The races are held on a stretch of the river that runs through downtown between two draw bridges.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!!
I knew the answer to this trivia question right off the bat! Band leader Guy Lombardo and his "Royal Canadians" DID produce, "The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven!"
Not only did I listen to his band bringing in the the New Year for years - long before Dick Clark - but, I actually met him in his brother's home on Long Island!
My grandmother lived across the Lagoon from Guy's brother, and on several occasions we went to his home to celebrate New Year's Eve with the huge Lombardo family. Since the brother also played in the band at the Roosevelt Grill in NYC, his wife, sister's, and non-band member brother's, and their families, neighbors, and friends gathered together to celebrate the night in the brother's home! (Grandma had showbiz connections, she had danced on Broadway in her youth.)
As a youngster, I bedded down in a bedroom, shared by several Lombardo kids, and slept through the festivities. When older, I too, listened to his famous "Auld Lang Syne" played on the radio, "Live from the Roosevelt Grill," and later on watched it on TV. Around 3 AM, the brother and other band members (a couple of times, Guy himself) rolled in, tired, but not too much to share stories of the night in the city! You see, the family was not into heavy boozing, and partying in the city, they wanted to be with their family and friends...
As the kids grew up, they moved away, and I am sure I saw the wives, etc., in the audience on TV - but what wonderful folks were they, and what good memories I have of those days... Dick Clark never replaced him in my past, even though I was a big time Rock 'n Roller...
Happy New Year, Marty,
PS: I sure wish Dick Clark would have the good taste to retire gracefully - it is long overdue...

Way back on December 31, 1978, I was working at KTVA, channel 11, in Anchorage, and one of the evening's highlights was CBS's traditional airing of
Guy Lombardo's New Year's Eve program.
Since Guy died 5 November, 1977, it seemed rather morbid to be welcoming the New Year with a dead guy.

Hollywood loves the Next Big Thing, and four years ago, that was Barack Obama, the equivalent of a breakout movie star.
"He is 'The One,'" said Oprah Winfrey, his biggest and most influential celebrity champion.
Halle Berry said she'd "collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear." Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am chimed in with the famous " Yes We Can " video.
But you can't be the Next Big Thing twice and as a new election year dawns, there's clearly a different mood in heavily Democratic Hollywood.
That means less gushing, not to mention snippets of criticism, most prominently from actor Matt Damon, who campaigned for Obama last time but now makes no secret of his disillusionment.

U2 is No. 1 when it comes to touring. The band had the highest-grossing tour both in North America and worldwide in 2011.
Bono, the Edge and company grossed $156 million in North America on the strength of 1.7 million tickets sold, according to Pollstar, which covers the concert industry. They grossed $231.9 million worldwide off 2.39 million tickets.
Rounding out the top five highest-grossing touring acts in North America were Taylor Swift ($97.7 million), Kenny Chesney ($84.6 million), Lady Gaga ($63.7 million) and Bon Jovi ($57.1 million).
As for the worldwide top five, U2 were followed by the reunited Take That ($224 million), Bon Jovi ($148.8 million), Swift ($104.2 million) and Roger Waters ($103.6 million). Tickets on U2's 360 Degrees tour sold for an average of $97.15 worldwide and $91.67 in North America.
The year's top 25 biggest tours grossed a combined $2.1 billion worldwide, which is roughly the same as in 2010. In North America, there was a 4 percent dip among the top 25, which grossed $1.19 billion.
Celebrities may resist the urge to send a stream of consciousness on Twitter in the new year, after famous people tweeted their way into trouble on everything from boxer briefs to breast-feeding in 2011.
NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne became the latest celebrity to blunder on Twitter, when he recently had to apologize for a tweet critical of public breast-feeding.
But Kahne has been far from alone in discovering Twitter's pitfalls. The year 2011 saw Congressman Anthony Weiner resign in a scandal that began with an errant tweet, and the musings of Hollywood stars such as the tech savvy Ashton Kutcher and comic Gilbert Gottfried generated public controversy.
As a result of those and other scandals, 2011 may be seen as a turning point when more celebrities and politicians saw the dangers of Twitter and quit sending unfiltered messages, pop culture experts said.
The public already knows speeches and even snappy quips from public figures are often scripted, so fans are likely to understand if the handlers of celebrities play a larger role in managing their Twitter accounts.

Comedian and hugely successful ventriloquist Jeff Dunham is set to marry his girlfriend of two years, fitness model Audrey Murdick. He announced the news last night onstage in Columbus, OH at the Nationwide Arena, telling his fans he popped the question to Murdick on Christmas Day.
Dunham, 49, then reconfirmed his intentions today on Twitter, excitedly writing about his 31-year-old bride to be: "Hey everyone! On Christmas Day, @AudreyMurdick & I got engaged! Big date TBA…"
Soon after, Murdick made her own announcement: "… @JeffDunham and I got engaged!! Yay!! Big date TBA. I'm so happy & excited…"
This will be Dunham's second bride. He split from wife Paige Brown after 14 years of marriage and began dating Murdick in 2009, who is also his nutritionist. Dunham has three daughters - Bree, Ashlyn and Kenna - from his first marriage.
The news of his engagement to Murdick caps off yet another giant year for the comedian. In September, his fourth comedy special Controlled Chaos premiered to 5.5 million viewers on Comedy Central, which made it the highest-rated stand-up special of the year. And just last month, Jeff Dunham: Birth of a Dummy premiered on the Biography Channel to 1.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched telecast for the network of all time.
The bride-to-be's mother was one of my old school pals, and she's aces in my book.
By that standard, her daughter ranks a royal flush (or better).
Questions?
For the first time, the top export of the United States, the world's biggest gas guzzler, is - wait for it - fuel.
Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel than any other single export, according to U.S. Census data going back to 1990. It will also be the first year in more than 60 that America has been a net exporter of these fuels.
Just how big of a shift is this? A decade ago, fuel wasn't even among the top 25 exports. And for the last five years, America's top export was aircraft.
The trend is significant because for decades the U.S. has relied on huge imports of fuel from Europe in order to meet demand. It only reinforced the image of America as an energy hog. And up until a few years ago, whenever gasoline prices climbed, there were complaints in Congress that U.S. refiners were not growing quickly enough to satisfy domestic demand; that controversy would appear to be over.
Still, the U.S. is nowhere close to energy independence. America is still the world's largest importer of crude oil. From January to October, the country imported 2.7 billion barrels of oil worth roughly $280 billion.

GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich said Thursday he's axing a chapter on climate change from his forthcoming book - though the intended author of the section said that was news to her, according to National Journal .
The Los Angeles Times reported earlier this month the book will more or less be a sequel to the former House Speaker's 2007 book, "A Contract with the Earth," describing it as a "collection of essays by various businesspeople and scientists." The Times said it would include a chapter on climate change by Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech who has said there is "no debate" about the reality of climate change and "the fact that humans are the primary cause."
A woman expressed concern to Gingrich about the chapter during an Iowa campaign stop Thursday, saying she'd heard Rush Limbaugh talking about it on his radio program.
That's not going to be in the book," Gingrich said to her in a video of the exchange. "We didn't know that they were doing that - we told them to kill it."
In 2008, Gingrich appeared in a now-infamous ad with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying the two agree "our country must take action to address climate change." He has since called it "the dumbest single thing I've done" in recent years.

One of the nation's most widely planted crops - a genetically engineered corn plant that makes its own insecticide - may be losing its effectiveness because a major pest appears to be developing resistance more quickly than scientists expected.
The U.S. food supply is not in any immediate danger because the problem remains isolated. But scientists fear potentially risky farming practices could be blunting the hybrid's sophisticated weaponry.
When it was introduced in 2003, so-called Bt corn seemed like the answer to farmers' dreams: It would allow growers to bring in bountiful harvests using fewer chemicals because the corn naturally produces a toxin that poisons western corn rootworms. The hybrid was such a swift success that it and similar varieties now account for 65 percent of all U.S. corn acres - grain that ends up in thousands of everyday foods such as cereal, sweeteners and cooking oil.

Sinead O'Connor is wasting no time elaborating on the reasons why she broke up with her husband after 16 days of marriage. One of them? Crack cocaine.
The Irish songstress previously revealed she and fourth husband Barry Herridge went on a search for marijuana on the night of their wedding in Las Vegas.
It seems the singer's decision to bring her new husband, a drug-abuse counselor, along for a marijuana search in a seedy portion of Las Vegas on the night of their wedding wasn't such a great call.
Elaborating on the "wild ride," she told British tabloid The Sun: "We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous. I wasn't scared -- but a drugs counselor. What was I thinking?
"Then I was handed a load of crack," she added. "Barry was very frightened -- that kind of messed everything up a bit, really."
