Yes, the rich have too much political influence.

Mary Beard: Two things I dislike on Twitter (TLS)
… I do find some uses of cats (not all) on Twitter decidedly uncomfortable. All Twitter users will have seen it … a load of tweets, full of self-righteousness, or starting a pile-in on someone outside the bubble … then a picture of a damn cat. I only assume that the rhetorical point is to assert: "Despite the bile you have just read, I am a nice person, who loves animals". If only loving animals went along with being a nice person! And it's a misuse of cats I think.

Geoffrey O'Brien: "The Story of Temple Drake: Notorious"(Criterion)
The keynote is dread, and anyone paying to see The Story of Temple Drake in 1933 would likely have gotten the message, by hearsay or by advertising that promised a picture "suitable for adult minds only," that the horrors in store were sexual in nature, straight from the pages of the "novel by William Faulkner" that the credits refrained (at the Hays Office's insistence) from identifying by name. Sanctuary (1931)-or, as writer Lamar Trotti described it at the time, "probably the most sickening novel ever written in this country"-had given Faulkner the notoriety his previous masterpieces The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying failed to achieve.

Hunter Harris: Does J.J. Abrams Know Adam Driver Is Hot? An Investigation. (Vulture)
What does director J.J. Abrams see when he sees Adam Driver? A large, shadowy figure with dark hair? Does he look at Adam Driver's height and mass and see … the Babadook? Are J.J. Abrams's glasses the wrong prescription? Or is he like one of those people at Warby Parker who wear frames without prescriptions to look smarter and sell glasses? Sure, J.J. Abrams has filmed Adam Driver, but has he really taken a good long look at him?

Hollywood's monsters were exposed, streaming services embraced auteurs and 'motion smoothing' made the movies look like daytime TV.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

In Spain they are called "Pitufos" and in France they are "Les Schtroumpfs". By what name are they known in the US?

       Smurfs                                                      Source

The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs; Dutch: De Smurfen) is a Belgian comic franchise centered on a fictional colony of small, blue, human-like creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. The Smurfs was first created and introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgian comics artist Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, wherein they were known as Les Schtroumpfs. There are more than 100 Smurf characters, and their names are based on adjectives that emphasise their characteristics, such as "Jokey Smurf", who likes to play practical jokes on his fellow smurfs. "Smurfette" was the first female Smurf to be introduced in the series. The Smurfs wear Phrygian caps, which came to represent freedom during the modern era.

The word "smurf" is the original Dutch translation of the French "schtroumpf", which, according to Peyo, is a word he invented during a meal with fellow cartoonist André Franquin when he could not remember the word salt.

In Spanish, they are called "Pitufos", a term invented by Miguel Agustí who was the head of the Spanish magazine Strong which first published the cartoon in Spanish. According to Agustí, he was walking around Barcelona while trying to come up a name for the cartoon. He came across a sculpture of the Ox of Patufet and was inspired by the word Patufet. From Patufet he derived the non-existent word Pitufo. The name later spread to most Spanish-language versions of the cartoon.        Source

Dave said:
Smurfs. Originally a Belgian comic strip that started in the 1950s, the Smurf's TV cartoon hit the US market in the early '80s. My employer tried to take advantage of the craze and quickly produced a ready to eat cereal named "Smurf Berry Crunch." It sold like hotcakes for a short time, but then dropped off dramatically because there were no repeat sales. Management studied the problem and concluded that it "tastes like shit," which you would figure they would have known before putting all that money into introducing it. Another negative was that kids would pick out all the blue "smurf berries" out of the box and only eat them (regardless of the taste) and the next day worried parents were phoning doctors because their kid's poop was bright blue. I'm not too sure all that dye was healthy so perhaps it was good that it failed?

Anecdotes

Collecting

• Lynn Peril, publisher of the zine Mystery Date, loves books. Her parents read to her frequently when she was very young. Ms. Peril says, "I was never taught to read; I simply woke up one day and discovered I could. I remember going downstairs and telling my mother, 'Hey, Mom-I can read!'" Her uncle lived surrounded by books. After he died, and when her aunt moved out of the house, her aunt let all the nephews and nieces take the books they wanted. Ms. Peril got a lot of first editions in excellent condition, often with dust jackets, because whenever an author such as Vladimir Nabokov, Flannery O'Connor, or Eugene O'Neill came out with a new book, her uncle would quickly buy a copy and read it. She reads the books, and she enjoys going to an antiquarian bookseller near where she lives, looking at the shelves, and saying, "Hey, I have that book."

• J. Paul Getty once bought a Raphael-like painting for £38 simply because he liked it. Later, the Raphael-like painting was discovered to be a genuine Raphael and not an imitation. Of course, this gratified Mr. Getty-not so much for the excellent investment he had made, but because the purchase had validated his artistic judgment.

• Gertrude Stein and her older brother Leo made many wise acquisitions in art, and soon their house was besieged by visitors who had come to look at their collection. Eventually, to gain some privacy for themselves, they announced that they would show off their collection to visitors only on Saturday evenings.

Competitions

• Adelina Patti and Etelka Gerster were rivals for the prima donna position in Colonel James H. Mapleson's traveling opera company. In Chicago, both singers appeared in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots, with Ms. Patti singing the role of Valentine and Ms. Gerster the role of the Queen. At the end of Act 1, huge bouquets of flowers were brought to Ms. Patti, even though she had had little to do in the first act, with most of the singing being done by Ms. Gerster. Finally, a small basket of posies was presented to Ms. Gerster-and the crowd went wild with excitement and applause. That evening, Ms. Patti swore that she would never again sing with Ms. Gerster.

• Opera/lieder singer Kathleen Ferrier started out as a pianist, but decided to take singing lessons after hearing a singing class and thinking, "I could make nicer noises than those." A friend bet her that she wouldn't have the courage to enter a singing contest, so she entered and won the prestigious award called the Blue Bowl. By the way, Ms. Ferrier once acquired what she called a "half-crown piano." While very young, she had entered a singing contest whose entry fee was half a crown and she had won the prize: a piano.

Composers

• Some music trivia: 1) Many towering geniuses were short. Franz Schubert was 5-foot-2, Igor Stravinsky was 5-foot-3, and Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Arnold Schoenberg were 5-foot-4. 2) John Taylor was a physician who operated on the eyes of the historian Edward Gibbon and the composers George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. In each case, he ruined their eyesight. 3) As a 14-year-old, Richard Wagner wrote a play titled Leubald in which 42 characters had died by the fourth act. Many of them reappeared as ghosts in the final act. 4) Ludwig van Beethoven knew that he was a musical genius. To Prince Lichnowsky he once said, "There are and there will be thousands of princes. There is only one Beethoven." 5) You can't always trust signs. George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, Germany. A sign announces that a certain house was his birthplace, but according to composer and music historian David W. Barber, Handel was actually born in the house next door.

Arrested At D.C. Climate Protest

Lily Tomlin

Lily Tomlin was arrested on Friday in the latest climate protest led by her Grace & Frankie co-star Jane Fonda.

Demonstrators shouted "Lily! Lily" as Tomlin and more than a dozen other demonstrators occupied the steps of the Capitol after a rally.

This was the 12th straight week of climate protests, something that Fonda plans to lead until mid-January, when Netflix's Grace & Frankie goes back into production.

Fonda was not arrested this week, but she has been arrested in five previous protests. She moved to Washington last fall to help lead the weekly demonstrations, called Fire Drill Fridays, inspired by teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. The protests have taken place even when Congress is out of session, and even during holiday time periods, like Friday's event and another that was held the day after Thanksgiving.

"We have got to stop hugging and start saving the trees," Tomlin told the crowd, while blasting one company, BlackRock, for investing in firms that do deforestation and immigration detention camps. She said that those immigrants include "climate refugees," or those who move from their homes for reasons related to climate change.

Ms Newton-John, the Grease star and health campaigner who moved from the UK to Australia with her family as a five-year-old, said she was "extremely excited, honoured and grateful beyond words" to be awarded a damehood.

There is also a damehood for broadcaster and children's campaigner Baroness Floella Benjamin, while cricket legend Clive Lloyd, Mr Duncan Smith and Mr Mendes - director of Skyfall and 1917 - are awarded knighthoods.

There are CBEs for DJ Annie Nightingale, Peaky Blinders' screenwriter Steven Knight and actress Wendy Craig, and OBEs for broadcaster June Sarpong, Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody and Mr Taylor - founding member of legendary group Queen.

Admits in Interview

Sharon Osbourne

Sharon Osbourne, the co-host of CBS' "The Talk" appeared on the BBC hit show "Would I Lie To You?" Christmas special and made a wicked claim.

The panel show features celebrity guests who tell some true and some not-so-true tales to the fellow guests, who have to decide whether the guest is telling the truth.

In this case, Osbourne claims it's all true.

Osbourne says that during a house fire that started after she and her husband, Ozzy Osbourne, accidentally left a candle burning, she forced a former assistant to go back into the blaze to recover previous artwork.

She also said that once the paramedics arrived, she proceeded to rip the staffer's oxygen mask off his face and give it to her dog instead.

From Netflix to Hitler, protesters are tapping pop culture and history as they vent their anger against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new citizenship law -- and with deft use of India's beloved acronyms.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) eases naturalisation for persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, but not if they are Muslim.

Critics fear it is the precursor to a National Register of Citizens (NRC) that many among India's often undocumented 200 million Muslims is aimed primarily of making them stateless.

Modi's government denies this and says the law is a humanitarian move, but it has sparked two weeks of protests that at times have been violent. At least 27 people have been killed.

"Someone sitting in the US or Europe will not understand the change in India's citizenship law but comparing Modi with Hitler simplifies it," Malhotra said, her placard depicting a cartoon Modi with a swastika armband.

Produce Wave of UFO Sightings

Starlink Satellites

Residents in northern Montana reported a string of strange lights dotting the sky. What looked like UFOs from an alien invasion has turned out to be another consequence of SpaceX's Starlink satellite constellation.

SpaceX launched 60 satellites into orbit back in May and another 60 in November 11 as part of the Starlink satellite constellation, meant to increase satellite internet access. But the reflective satellites are also producing bright trains of lights across the sky, stoking UFO fears for those unaware of the satellites and distracting astronomers.

The most recent sighting of a train of Starlink satellites occurred over the cities of Browning, Rocky Boy, and Lodgepole in Montana where residents shared sightings with local news outlets. University of Maryland computer scientist Jen Golbeck pointed out in a tweet that the train could also have been visible in Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan this past week. A Starlink constellation launched in May stoked a similar wave of "UFO" sightings in Europe.

But perhaps more worrisome than a rash of UFO reports, these sightings are distracting astronomers. Gizmodo reported last month that the satellites appeared in images taken by astronomers operating the Dark Energy Camera at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile. Approximately 1 in 40 exposures captured the satellite train. Each train of satellites eventually breaks up as they settle into each individual satellite settles into a unique orbit.

Slave Cemetery Poses Questions

Florida

The rumors swirled for decades: A dark history long lay buried under the grassy knolls and manicured lawns of a country club in Florida's capital city.

Over the years, neat rows of rectangular depressions along the 7th fairway deepened in the grass, outlining what would be confirmed this month as sunken graves of the slaves who lived and died on a plantation that once sprawled with cotton near the Florida Capitol.

The discovery of 40 graves - with perhaps dozens more yet to be found - has spawned discussion about how to honor those who lie in rest at the golf course. And it has brought renewed attention to the many thousands of unmarked and forgotten slave cemeteries across the Deep South that forever could be lost to development or indifference.

Wooden markers that had identified the graves have long since decayed. For years, golfers have unknowingly trod through the cemetery.

Leon County was the center of Florida's plantation economy during the antebellum days and had the state's highest concentration of slaves. Just before the Civil War, three of every four county inhabitants were human chattel owned by elite white families.

Methane Leak Stayed Hidden

Ohio

A little-noticed 2018 methane leak at an Exxon Mobil site in Ohio was one of the worst in recent memory, outpacing the methane emissions from the entire oil and gas industries of many countries.

That's according to a paper published Dec. 16 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and first reported in the The New York Times. When the natural gas well in Belmont County, Ohio, blew in February, it was a significant local event, prompting the evacuation of about 100 residents within a 1-mile (1.6 kilometers) radius, the Times reported. But it wasn't clear how large the leak was until researchers in the new paper, studying data from a new European Space Agency (ESA) methane-monitoring satellite, spotted the plume. The blown well was pumping 132 tons (120 metric tons) of methane into the atmosphere every hour, give or take 35 tons (32 metric tons). That's nearly double the rate of a much more famous leak reported at a SoCalGas site in Aliso Canyon, California, in 2015.

Invisible, odorless methane is one of the most important sources of greenhouse gases after carbon dioxide, the researchers wrote, accounting for at least one-quarter of all global warming that greenhouse gases are causing in 2019. That's despite the substance's concentration in the atmosphere, which is much lower than CO2's. The gas is 80 times more potent at warming the planet than carbon dioxide in the first decade after the substance released.

The sheer scale of the Ohio incident might have gone unnoticed if the team of Dutch and U.S. researchers behind this paper hadn't decided to specifically look for the leak in the satellite data after hearing reports of the blowout, the Times wrote. The researchers spotted the leak's plume traveling north along the Ohio-Pennsylvania border and then east into Pennsylvania.

Ice Melt

Antarctic

There are signs Antarctica just experienced its highest melt extent ever recorded in the satellite era. The big meltdown hit on Christmas Eve and is bad news for a continent already dealing with a lot. With summer is just getting started there, this is a serious case of Summertime Sadness.

Antarctic is the largest stash of ice on the planet. Warm oceans have posed the biggest threat to that ice by undercutting the ice shelves that float out into the sea, particularly the tongues of ice around West Antarctica. But surface melt could become a bigger concern, and the Christmas Eve meltdown is indicative of the concerns. Preliminary findings from modeling done at the University of Liège in Belgium show that the percentage of surface melt on the continent spiked on December 24. The modeling uses weather forecasts to simulate surface melt. Because the environment is so harsh in Antarctica, weather station data is tough to come by so these are best estimates.

Antarctic surface melt season starts in mid-November and runs into February. Late December and early January are the height of the melt season. On average, just eight percent of Antarctica's surface melts at the peak. But this year has been anything but average, with everyday since late November showing well above normal surface melt extent. That culminated in a big melt spike on Christmas Eve when about 16 percent of the continent's icy surface went into meltdown.

That's an area equivalent to the size of Denmark. West Antarctica-home to some of the most endangered ice on the planet-has seen the worst of the melt season according to the University of Liège data. But even the normally colder and higher East Antarctic hasn't escaped a more watery fate.

Antarctic is unfortunately not the only stash of ice to be dealing with more extreme melt season. Researchers have observed the same phenomenon in Greenland as well. This summer's melt season set a record for daily ice loss as a result of surface melting. Greenland has been the main contributor to sea level rise. With Antarctica's ice loss accelerating, we're starting to get into dangerous territory.

DNA Points To Killers

Great Auk

The North Atlantic was once home to a bird that bore a remarkable similarity to penguins. The great auk, also known as "the original penguin," was a large, flightless, black and white bird, that is said to have existed in the millions. Despite its appearance, the great auk is actually a relative of razorbills and puffins, not of penguins. However, since around 1844, the Northern Hemisphere has been without its version of the penguin, and it looks like our species is to blame.

The great auk had long provided humans with a source of meat and eggs. But from around 1500, hunting dramatically intensified when Europeans discovered the rich fishing grounds of Newfoundland. Within 350 years, the last great auks ever reliably seen were killed to be put in a museum, and the species was lost forever.

Given the relative speed of this extinction, it's worth asking whether other factors, such as environmental changes, were involved. Was the great auk heading for extinction before intensive hunting began? Or could it have survived and still be around today if it hadn't been for humans?

There is lots of evidence, including archaeological records and written accounts, that shows the great auk was hunted throughout its existence. But until now we haven't known what impact environmental change may have had on the bird's extinction. If the species had been at risk of extinction prior to the onset of intensive hunting in the 16th century, we would expect to see signs in its DNA.
