Cream filled or topped pies are favorite props for humor. Throwing a pie in a person's face has been a staple of film comedy since Ben Turpin received one in Mr. Flip in 1909. More recently, pieing has also become a political act.

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
The first case of pie in the face was Mr. Flip in 1909, though that pie was not thrown, but was pushed into Ben Turpin's face.
Things began in earnest when Mack Sennett began incorporating pie fights into his shorts around 1913.

Pieing has its origins in the "pie in the face" gag from slapstick comedy,
first seen in the 1909 Essanay Studios silent film Mr. Flip starring Ben
Turpin

Dale of Diamond Springs responded:
Pie throwing was first seen in the 1909 Essanay Studios silent film Mr. Flip starring Ben Turpin. In the story, Turpin has a pie pushed into his face for taking liberties with a woman.

What does Sally detest most of all in the movies or on TV, why it is throwing pies - especially when people are starving all over the world...
That being said, throwing a pie in a person's face has been a staple of film comedy since Ben Turpin in the early silent film, "Mr Flip" in 1909.
Stupid then, and still stupid now...
This one is okay though...

Memo to Purple Gene: Dude, I feel for ya. I really do. Thanks for "going to hell and back" to write what needed to be said. Hey, though, someone had to do it, eh? Be that as it may, you deserve a 'V' for valor. I get 'Lifetime', but no way would I ever watch that.
The thought of Lindsay Lohan as Liz is appalling... Cringe-worthy again comes to mind... But, it also brings to mind a poll. Who could possibly portray Liz the best? Take a day, or two, E! fans (I need that myself, frankly, to think it over) and send your thoughts to BCEpoll@aol.com and I'll put together a compilation...

After months of high-profile fundraising that drew celebrities' attention and dollars, a group of Native American tribes has raised $9 million to buy a piece of land in South Dakota's Black Hills that they consider sacred, an official with an Indian land foundation said Friday.
The Indian Land Tenure Foundation president Cris Stainbrook told The Associated Press that the tribes raised enough money to purchase the land from its current owners. The foundation was one of several groups and organizations leading the effort to buy the land.
Stainbrook said the deal should be finalized yet Friday, which was the deadline for the tribes to raise the money.
The land, known as Pe' Sla, went up for sale after being privately owned. Members of the Great Sioux Nation have been allowed to gather there every year to perform rituals. The site plays a key role in the tribes' creation story, and members fear new owners would develop it.
Landowners Leonard and Margaret Reynolds canceled a public auction of the property earlier this year after tribal members expressed outrage. The Reynolds' then accepted the tribes' bid to purchase the land for $9 million, should they raise enough money by Nov. 30.

William Shatner is not attending the USS Enterprise's retirement, after all.
A publicist for the actor tells The Virginian-Pilot the former commander of the fictional starship Enterprise on TV's "Star Trek" is abandoning plans to attend the ceremony Saturday at Norfolk Naval Station. He announced earlier he would be attending.
The publicist tells the newspaper Shatner had to rework his schedule.
The Enterprise returned to Norfolk from its final deployment earlier this month. Saturday's inactivation will be its last public ceremony.
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has expressed "alarm and dismay" at Prime Minister David Cameron's response to a report on press wrongdoing in Britain.
Rowling was writing in support of Lord Justice Brian Leveson's recommendations published Thursday, which proposed that the press should be regulated by an independent body enshrined in law.
But Cameron, along with newspaper editors, expressed misgivings about the proposals, saying setting down new laws about a press regulator could infringe on the independence of Britain's press.
Rowling gave evidence last year about press intrusion into her family's privacy during an inquiry that preceded the report. She had told of how journalists had driven her out of her home and targeted her 5-year-old daughter at school.

Oscar host Seth MacFarlane is inviting college students to join him on stage at the Academy Awards.
The "Family Guy" creator made a surprise appearance at UCLA to announce a contest sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and mtvU that will allow winning college students to appear on the Feb. 24 Oscar telecast.
The contest invites students to submit videos on the academy's Facebook page describing how they'll contribute to the future of film. At least six winners will serve as trophy carriers on the Oscar show, replacing the leggy models who usually perform the duties.
The contest is also aimed at drawing younger viewers favored by advertisers to the Oscars' aging TV audience. Like UCLA student Abby Smith, who immediately pulled out her smartphone to share the moment on Facebook when MacFarlane appeared before her class.
Three members of the Monty Python British comedy troupe were in court in London on Friday for the opening of a lawsuit over the profits from a spin-off of one of their greatest hits, the 1975 movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".
Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Jones arrived together and sat at the back of a small, modern courtroom to listen to opening arguments in the case. All three are expected to give evidence next week.
The Pythons are at odds with Mark Forstater, the producer of the "Holy Grail", who says he has not received his fair share of profits from "Spamalot", a spin-off musical.
Inspired by the original film, the musical opened on Broadway in 2005 and has enjoyed a successful run in Britain too. Idle wrote the lyrics and collaborated on most of the music.
Forstater, an American based in Britain, says that under a 1974 agreement between him and the Pythons, he is entitled to one-seventh of profits derived from "Holy Grail" and any merchandise or spin-offs (MSO).
Chinese regulators suspended a broadcaster Friday after an unaired segment of a TV game show was leaked online showing a raucous shouting match about nudity between spectators and a woman who calls her daughter the next Lady Gaga.
The suspension of all of Jiangsu Education Television's programming - because of content deemed vulgar and not educational enough - marked the government's latest attempt to rein in the increasingly freewheeling media sector. China also said earlier this year it would limit American-style reality TV and other light fare shown on satellite TV.
The latest ruling was prompted by the game show "Bang Bang Bang," which has games of chance for cash prizes as well as entertainment segments with attractive women. A video clip apparently filmed by an audience member features Gan Lulu, an auto show model well-known in China for racy outfits and whose career was launched by a nude video of her posted online by her publicity-seeking mother.
The six-minute clip of the not-yet-aired game show episode, still available on YouTube, shows Gan as well audience members and the model's mother shouting and swearing after one spectator asks whether Gan's risque images have undermined China's morality.

The obscure book's margins are virtually filled with clusters of curious foreign characters - a mysterious shorthand used by 17th century religious dissident Roger Williams.
For centuries the scribbles went undeciphered. But a team of Brown University students has finally cracked the code.
Historians call the now-readable writings the most significant addition to Williams scholarship in a generation or more. Williams is Rhode Island's founder and best known as the first figure to argue for the principle of the separation of church and state that would later be enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
A group including former library director Edward Widmer, Williams scholar and Rhode Island College history professor emeritus J. Stanley Lemons and others at Brown started trying to unravel the so-called "Mystery Book" a few years ago. But the most intense work began earlier this year after the university opened up the challenge to undergraduates, several of whom launched an independent project.
Fifty-nine years after James Watson and Francis Crick deduced the double-helix structure of DNA, a scientist has captured the first direct photograph of the twisted ladder that props up life.
Enzo Di Fabrizio, a physics professor at the Magna Graecia University in Catanzaro, Italy, snapped the picture using an electron microscope.
Previously, scientists had only seen DNA's structure indirectly. The double-corkscrew form was first discovered using a technique called X-ray crystallography, in which a material's shape is reconstructed based on how X-rays bounce after they collide with it.
But Di Fabrizio and his colleagues developed a plan to bring DNA out of hiding. They built a nanoscopic landscape of extremely water-repellant silicon pillars. When they added a solution that contained strands of DNA into this scene, the water quickly evaporated and left behind cords of bare DNA that stretched like tightropes between the tiny mesas.
They then shone beams of electrons through holes in the silicon bed, and captured high-resolution images of the illuminated molecules.
