Trivia Question of the Day

Awarded a Canada Council for the Arts grant, what was Doug Henning required to study?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

The individual, round cut-outs in the pages of dictionaries, encyclopedias, or other sectioned, often alphabetic, reference works, used to locate entries starting at a particular letter or section are called ______?______

      Thumb Index                                                      Source

A thumb index, also called a cut-in index, is a round cut-out in the pages of dictionaries, encyclopedias, or other sectioned, often alphabetic, reference works like Bibles, used to locate entries starting at a particular letter or section. The individual notches are called thumb cuts.        Source

Marian was first, and correct, with:
   thumb index

Overstuffed Lois Of Oregon said:
Hey, I KNOW this one, 'cause I used to manually cut out and apply the labels to bibles I INDEXED at the old book warehouse where once I worked. It was kind of fun and a lot easier than running around filling Amazon orders, I must say! Having a hard time making a "dick" connection with today's trivia question, although one could use the Index Cutter for a designer circumcision, as it would achieve a nice scalloped edge. I'm sorry. That wasn't funny. Too much turkey. To make up for that, here is a picture of George W. Bush eating a kitten.

Alan J wrote:

Charlie replied:
Thumb, or cut-in indices (or indexes).

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:

I can still picture Sister Louise Claudia, pointer in hand, telling us, "Now girls, refer to your thumb index and go to," as if were yesterday...

Dale of Delightful Diamond Springs, in Norfallcali, responded:
Worked in a college library while attending an institution of higher learning - it's a Thumb Index. Suckers, hitchers, and something up the bum instead of the ole thumb!

'Superb TV' Moment - BBC America's "The Making of Planet Earth". The explanations and demonstrations of the equipment used to 'film' the series' outstanding nature scenes is fascinating and amazing. Naturally, some of the equipment was military-inspired and created. The 'Stand Off' ability to view and record animals close-up, while from a great distance, without them aware of it was impressive... The setting up of traveling cameras and other technical improvisations are intriguing. Equally poignant was the first-hand accounts by the crew of the environments they had to live and work in. Often they were uncomfortable, even nasty, more often they were adventurous and dangerous.

Champions Belgian Police Horses

Brigitte Bardot

Film star and animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot called on Belgium Thursday not to change its retirement system for police horses, warning they could end up at the slaughterhouse as a result.

"The cost savings planned by the police threaten the future and security of horses at the end of their working lives," Bardot said in a letter released by her animal welfare foundation.

"That is why I ask you not to undermine a system which has proved its worth by ensuring a well deserved retirement for many horses," she said, adding that the cost savings were minimal.

Belgian Interior Minister Joelle Milquet is currently considering plans to end the system, with government finances tight.

Since 1991, police horses past working age have gone to 'adoptive families' which must meet strict criteria to ensure the animals' welfare and be subject to annual inspections.

Court Orders Review

"John Doe"

A federal appeals court has ordered immigration officials to review their decision not to grant asylum to a gay man who said he was attacked for his sexual orientation in 2002 and 2003 in his native Russia and feared he would be persecuted if forced to return there.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Board of Immigration Appeals was wrong when it concluded that the man had failed to show that government officials in Russia were either unwilling or unable to control his attackers, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Wednesday.

The man was only identified as "John Doe" in the opinion.

"The government failed to present any evidence to rebut Doe's undisputed testimony that he suffered serious assaults at the hands of individuals on account of his homosexuality or to show that the Russian government was able and willing to control non-governmental actors who attack homosexuals," the court said.

It ordered the board to review the case and said federal officials had to show circumstances had changed in Russia to allay the man's fears, or that he could be relocated to a safe area in the country.

Japan's Answer T o Banksy

281 Antinuke

With his face hidden behind sunglasses and a white surgical mask, the artist is almost as invisible as the radioactive contamination he is protesting against - yet his stickers are graphic reminders of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Known as 281 Antinuke, Japan's answer to Banksy has covered Tokyo streets in images depicting politicians as vampires and children being shielded from radioactive rain to highlight the consequences of a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant after an earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.

The disaster and the response by plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) stoked anti-nuclear sentiment and the biggest public protests in Japan since the 1960s, but the movement has since lost momentum.

"Perhaps because everyone believes people telling them on television that everything is fine, they don't seem so worried," 281 Antinuke told Reuters. "I hope by leaving my art I can remind people that we're not safe at all ... and that they will do something to protect themselves."

281 Antinuke is a rare instance in a country where graffiti writers face heavy penalties and strong social disapproval. Online commentators have called for his arrest and his agent says the artist has received death threats.

US Eyes Phase-Out

Telephone Network

America's plain old telephone network is rapidly being overtaken by new technology, putting US regulators in a quandary over how to manage the final stages of transformation.

Though the timing remains unclear, the impact of change and what it means for roughly 100 million Americans who remain reliant on the dated but still-functional system of copper wires and switching stations is up for debate.

The Federal Communications Commission is working toward drafting rules in January to formalize the IP transition -- switching communications systems to Internet protocol.

"Almost everyone will be off this network in the next four years. It is a dead model walking," said Scott Cleland, of the research and consulting firm Precursor LLC, noting that three quarters of the transition is done.

Cleland, a former White House telecom policy adviser, said that even if people wanted to keep the old system, "they are not making the switches anymore for this. And the engineers they need to keep it alive are retiring."

Pipeline Threatened

Keystone XL

A sudden surge in U.S. oil output could derail plans to build the massive Keystone XL pipeline to ship Canadian oil from Alberta to refineries on the American Gulf Coast, Canada's U.S. ambassador was warned in internal emails.

In a series of emails unearthed by an access to information request from energy think tank Pembina Institute and provided to CBC News, Canadian energy counsellor Paul Connors warned ambassador Gary Doer in the summer that America's current oil boom could alter the viability of cross-border pipeline plans.

Keystone XL is a proposed 1,900-kilometre pipeline being pitched by Calgary-based TransCanada that aims to bring Canadian oilsands oil from Hardisty, Alta., south through five U.S. states to oil refineries on the Gulf Coast in Texas.

But recent events may have changed those economics somewhat. A series of oil discoveries in the Bakken, Eagle Ford and Permian basins scattered across the continental U.S. have increased America's possible oil output to a far higher level than previously believed.

The U.S. now has so much recoverable oil that it's now expected to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world's largest oil producer at some point in the next 10 to 20 years.

Teresa Treuheit, dressed as a gold-foiled Christ Child, recites the traditional prologue for the opening ceremony of Germany's oldest Christkindlesmarkt (Christ Child Market) in Nürnberg November 29, 2013. The first official record of this pre-Christmas market dates back to 1628. A list of notices for stall holders from 1737 shows that almost all of Nürnberg's craftsmen were represented. Every year, Germany's traditional markets, such as the centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt in medieval Nürnberg, draw millions of visitors, both local and foreign. They open before the first Sunday of Advent and usually continue until December 24 at 12 noon.

Refused U.S. Entry

Ellen Richardson

A Toronto woman denied a flight to New York as part of a cruise trip wants to know who told U.S. border agents about her history of mental illness.

Ellen Richardson says she was turned away by a U.S. customs agent at Pearson International Airport on Monday because she had been hospitalized for clinical depression in June 2012.

She missed her flight to New York City and a Caribbean cruise, for which she had paid $6,000, as a result.

Though U.S. officials have access to police records, medical records are supposed to be held in the strictest confidence.

Richardson's stay in hospital was preceded by a 911 call, placed by her mother, but she says police were never involved, just an ambulance.

Policeman-Cannibal

Dresden

A German policeman has been arrested after the chopped-up body of a man he met on a fetishist website for cannibalism was found buried in his garden, police in the eastern city of Dresden said on Friday.

"The victim had been fantasizing about being killed and eaten by someone else since his youth," Dresden police chief Dieter Kroll told a news conference. It was not immediately clear whether any act of cannibalism had taken place.

The investigation recalled the case of Armin Meiwes, dubbed the "Cannibal of Rothenburg", who killed and ate a man who had advertised on the Internet for someone to kill him "and leave no trace". Meiwes, who filmed the act, received a life sentence in 2006.

Dresden police said the suspect was a 55-year-old who worked as a technical expert in the criminal investigation department. The victim was identified only as a 59-year-old man from Hanover and the case was being treated as murder, they said.

Another Compassionate Conservative

Grand Mufti

The grand mufti of Saudi Arabia said a ban on women driving in the conservative Gulf state protects society from "evil", in remarks published in the press on Thursday.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, in a speech delivered Wednesday in the western city of Medina, said the issue of giving women the right to drive should not be "one of society's major concerns".

The kingdom's most senior cleric called for "the matter to be considered from the perspective of protecting society from evil" which, according to him, included letting women drive.

His comments came as activists said they had been assured by Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef that authorities were reassessing the controversial Saudi ban on women drivers.

The absolute monarchy is the only country in the world where women are barred from driving, a regulation that has drawn condemnation from the international community.

Encryption

Encrypted email, secure instant messaging and other privacy services are booming in the wake of the National Security Agency's recently revealed surveillance programs. But the flood of new computer security services is of variable quality, and much of it, experts say, can bog down computers and isn't likely to keep out spies.

In the end, the new geek wars -between tech industry programmers on the one side and government spooks, fraudsters and hacktivists on the other- may leave people's PCs and businesses' computer systems encrypted to the teeth but no better protected from hordes of savvy code crackers.

Encryption isn't meant to keep hackers out, but when it's designed and implemented correctly, it alters the way messages look. Intruders who don't have a decryption key see only gobbledygook.

A series of disclosures from former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden this year has exposed sweeping U.S. government surveillance programs. The revelations are sparking fury and calls for better encryption from citizens and leaders in France, Germany, Spain and Brazil who were reportedly among those tapped. Both Google and Yahoo, whose data centre communications lines were also reportedly tapped, have committed to boosting encryption and online security. Although there's no indication Facebook was tapped, the social network is also upping its encryption systems.

In Memory

Lewis Collins

British actor Lewis Collins, star of the cult television crime drama "The Professionals", has died at the age of 67, his agent said on Thursday.

Collins, who played the taciturn tough guy Bodie alongside co-star Martin Shaw in the action-packed cop show, died in Los Angeles after a five-year battle with cancer.

With its memorable theme tune and high-octane stunts, "The Professionals" was one of the biggest hits on British television during its run from 1977 to 1981.

Collins also starred in the 1982 film "Who Dares Wins" about the British army's elite Special Air Service (SAS).

He said he had auditioned for the role of James Bond after that but subsequently dropped out of acting and set up a computer business in the United States.

Born in Merseyside, northwest England, he initially worked as a hairdresser and a musician in local bands.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

Monarch butterflies fly at the El Rosario butterfly sanctuary on a mountain in the Mexican state of Michoacan November 27, 2013. Monarch butterflies have started arriving at a butterfly sanctuary in the central Mexican state of Michoacan - an annual spectacle that draws tourists, scientists and locals alike, but not in the arrival numbers expected. Biologist Felipe Martinez, Sub-Director of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, said the arrival has been delayed due to several cold fronts hitting Mexico and continued rain storms. In 2000, Mexico established a 56,000 hectare reserve for the butterflies in Michoacan and part of the State of Mexico, containing some 6.7 million trees.
