Paul Krugman: Suffer Little Children (NY Times)
Today's immigrants are the same as our parents and grandparents were. President Obama is doing the decent thing with his immigration initiative.
Michael Atkinson: "The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind: We Can Bring a Good Bit of Rope" (Criterion)
Here we enter the altar space of American totemology through the side gate, when no one's looking, after grandeur and money and heroic individualism have wafted away with the night smoke and left only questions. Monte Hellman's mitotic microwesterns The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind don't define their era-which barely saw them-so much as manifest a broader existential modernity rivaled only by Antonioni's in the same decade. Famously, they were both shot in 1965.
Jason Iannone: "4 Kids' Books That Teach Good Lessons (in Terrible Ways)" (Cracked)
When my son reads a book, my hope is that it will teach him good morals and useful knowledge so I don't have to. If 25 colorful pages of wacky talking animals help keep him on the straight and narrow, then that leaves me more time for what the Good Lord gave me breath to do: crafting bawdy one-liners that reduce everything our species has accomplished down to one loud, unending fart.
Jason Iannone: 4 Cases of Censorship That Totally Changed the Message (Cracked)
… sometimes censorship crosses a line. Not because it "threatens freedom" or "oppresses thought," whatever that means. No, censorship commits a greater sin: It completely alters the story's message and, more often than not, makes life a little more boring.
Toronto Maple Leafs fans finish singing US anthem after technical difficulties (YouTube)
"We make jokes about Canadians, and Canadians make jokes about Americans, but deep down, we love each other. Kind of like siblings. Tuesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs hosted the Nashville Predators. Considering all the snow between here and there, the crowd was overwhelmingly Canadian. During the U.S. national anthem, the microphone pooped out. That's when the Canadian crowd jumped in to finish the song themselves! It was a lovely moment." - Neatorama
A grimoire is a textbook of magic. Such books typically include instructions on how to create magical objects like talismans and amulets, how to perform magical spells, charms and divination and also how to summon or invoke supernatural entities such as angels, spirits, and demons. In many cases, the books themselves are also believed to be imbued with magical powers, though in many cultures, other sacred texts that are not grimoires, such as the Bible, have also been believed to have supernatural properties intrinsically; in this manner while all books on magic could be thought of as grimoires, not all magical books should.

Joe S answered:
Magic! A Grimoire teaches all sorts of magical things, spells and recipes and such. My old mother never used a recipe or measured anything. You know, a pinch of powdered dragon horn, a handful of dried gnat heads, a dash of vanilla extract, a splash of kerosene (for taste), you know, that sort of thing. It always came out perfectly, whatever she was brewing up. Over the years you learn these things and you know what needs to be measured precisely, like Doxy venom (too much will kill you, to little may turn you to corn smut). You need to learn things like that and that's where the Grimoire in invaluable.
Carla met me at a party, I should say she noticed me rather than met me, for I was sitting under a table carving. She came over to the table and sat down beside me and asked me what I was carving. I confessed it was a Magic Wand. A Magic Wand named Fred. The wand enchanted her (as Magic Wands named Fred often do) and she dropped her boyfriend right then (who brought her to the party). I took her home that night and. we've been together every since. Magic is alive my friends, Magic is alive.
True story.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.

Rest easy, Dish Network subscribers. CNN is coming back to your airwaves.
After a tense round of negotiations, Dish and Turner have reached an agreement to extend their relationship, restoring CNN and other networks to Dish.
The agreement brings Turner channels such as CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, truTV, TCM, HLN, CNN en Espanol and Boomerang back to the Dish Network service.
The extension is for several months, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap on Friday.

Frances Moore was hired to help out for the holidays at an Alabama jewelry store in 1939, and she's still there.
The 93-year-old Birmingham woman is celebrating 75 years as an employee of the family-owned Bromberg & Co., which dates to 1836 and is one of the nation's oldest family-owned retailers.
Moore was hired to polish silver at Bromberg's on Nov. 21, 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president and before the United States entered World War II. She made $8 a week initially, but she was happy since the trolley ride to work only cost only 7 cents.
She soon transferred to gift wrap. By around 1970, Moore was managing the company's multimillion-dollar jewelry inventory.
Moore said her parents taught her to work hard and Bromberg's is a good employer, so she never left. She retired from full-time work a few years ago but still comes in to sort and tag jewelry.
"The Queen Latifah Show" will be ending after this season.
Distributor Sony Pictures Television said Friday the show will air original episodes through March.
The daytime talk show was launched in fall 2013 and found a so-so reception in its freshman year. This season it named a new executive producer and reaffirmed its motivational, upbeat elements.

Jakub Marczewski grew a beard six years ago because he was too lazy to shave. Now he finds himself in the middle of a global trend.
The 21-year-old got his hair and beard trimmed at a new shop with a hip retro vibe, the Barberian Academy & Barber Shop, which opened in Warsaw last month to serve the growing number of Polish men with facial hair. A revival in the culture of barbering in this Eastern European capital is just one sign of how popular beards have become, with actors, athletes and hipsters leading the way.
Metrosexuals be gone: Europe is agog for beards.
Now facial hair is hugely popular across Western Europe, especially in fashion-conscious Paris. And in Britain and many other nations, it's the month of "Movember" - when men are encouraged to grow a mustache to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues.
Hundreds of civil rights lawyers from across America are descending on Ferguson, Missouri as police and protesters prepare for a grand jury decision on whether to charge the officer who killed an unarmed black teenager in August.
The attorneys are arriving in Ferguson as talks between protest groups and police have stalled over a refusal by officials to rule out the use of riot gear, tear gas and militarized equipment if demonstrations turn violent should a grand jury decide not to indict police officer Darren Wilson, protest leaders say.
The lawyers, some from as far afield as New York and California, have responded to calls from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and protest groups in Ferguson to monitor police behavior in the wake of the grand jury decision. They will also take an aggressive legal posture, the attorneys said, filing quick fire lawsuits to fight potentially shoddy jail conditions, onerous bail bonds and civil rights abuses.
Prominent civil rights lawyer Vince Warren, executive director of the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) has been in Ferguson since Monday. Nicole Lee, an international human rights lawyer from Washington, arrived on Wednesday.
Warren said 280 lawyers and law students had answered emails and have volunteered to travel to Ferguson. The lawyers are taking instructions from the CCR, the National Lawyers Guild, the Missouri Chapter of the ACLU and the NAACP Legal defense Fund.

A two-year investigation by the Republican-controlled House Intelligence Committee has found that the CIA and the military acted properly in responding to the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, and asserted no wrongdoing by Obama administration appointees.
Debunking a series of persistent allegations hinting at dark conspiracies, the investigation of the politically charged incident determined that there was no intelligence failure, no delay in sending a CIA rescue team, no missed opportunity for a military rescue, and no evidence the CIA was covertly shipping arms from Libya to Syria.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, intelligence about who carried it out and why was contradictory, the report found. That led Susan Rice, then U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, to inaccurately assert that the attack had evolved from a protest, when in fact there had been no protest. But it was intelligence analysts, not political appointees, who made the wrong call, the committee found. The report did not conclude that Rice or any other government official acted in bad faith or intentionally misled the American people.
The House Intelligence Committee report was released with little fanfare on the Friday before Thanksgiving week. Many of its findings echo those of six previous investigations by various congressional committees and a State Department panel. The eighth Benghazi investigation is being carried out by a House Select Committee appointed in May.

A group of outdoorsmen near Merritt, B.C., say they're being threatened with criminal charges and accuse the RCMP of taking sides in a dispute over access to lakes on a massive cattle ranch owned by a U.S. billionaire.
CBC first reported two years ago on the David and Goliath battle between the ranch, said to be the largest working cattle ranch in Canada, and the Nicola Valley Fish and Game Club.
But now the fight, reminiscent of an old-fashioned western, is heating up again as members of the fish and game club risk criminal charges by cutting locks on gates across roads that were once public.
So far, billionaire Stan Kroenke is saying little. Kroenke owns the St. Louis Rams, is the largest shareholder of Arsenal in the English Premier League, and is married to Ann Walton, daughter of the founder of Wal-Mart.
Kroenke has earned the nickname "Silent Stan" for his shrewd business deals and general lack of comment.

One week before Thanksgiving, much of the nation is digging out from snowstorms, but the ground is bare in Alaska's largest city.
Anchorage normally has nearly 17 inches of snowfall this time of year. Instead, it's seen less than 4 inches - and that snow fell a month ago and melted in unseasonably warmer weather.
Without powder, local skiers are hitting the trails on roller skis or getting fit indoors. Some people are finding frozen lakes to skate on, even if it means leaving town. Others are celebrating.
A light rain fell this week, only to later freeze into a slick layer on roads. So far, however, Anchorage's high this month was 48 degrees on Nov. 10, instead of the norm of 29 degrees for that day, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Dixon.
The same system that is pushing frigid conditions from the north to the Lower 48 states is bringing warmer and drier conditions to Alaska's mainland from the south, Dixon said. It's sort of like trading places.
