Departing Space Station Commander Provides Tour of Orbital Laboratory (YouTube)
In her final days as Commander of the International Space Station, Sunita Williams of NASA recorded an extensive tour of the orbital laboratory and downlinked the video on Nov. 18, just hours before she, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency departed in their Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft for a landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan. The tour includes scenes of each of the station's modules and research facilities with a running narrative by Williams of the work that has taken place and which is ongoing aboard the orbital outpost.

Robert T. Gonzalez: Americans - why do you keep refrigerating your eggs? (io9)
Given the sanitary benefits of refrigeration, why don't other countries ship, package, and store their eggs at cold temperatures, like we do in the U.S.? Well, because, unlike America, they may not actually need to. Why? Because here in America, we wash our eggs - and while it may sound counterintuitive, the cleaning process may actually make eggs more susceptible to contamination

Minnie Mouse is a funny animal cartoon character created by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney. The comic strip story "The Gleam" (published January 19-May 2, 1942) by Merrill De Maris and Floyd Gottfredson first gave her full name as "Minerva Mouse." Minnie has since been a recurring alias for her. Minnie is currently voiced by actress Russi Taylor. Both Minnie and Mickey were first drawn in 1928 by Ub Iwerks.

@JoeS - when I read that the sainted Carla had , "Completed her 67th trip around the sun," I immediately though of this:

Ugh, now I remember how much I hate Disney. All the forced

Macy's is moving rocker Joan Jett and her band off the South Dakota tourism float in itsThanksgiving Day parade after ranchers complained about having a vegetarian and animal rights advocate representing their state.
"I've decided to switch from South Dakota to another float because people's political agendas were getting in the way of what should be a purely entertainment driven event," Jett said in a statement released Friday. "I will remain focused on entertaining the millions of people watching, who will be celebrating a great American tradition."
Orlando Veras, Macy's parade spokesman, told The Associated Press on Friday that a new performer for the South Dakota float will be announced later. Veras said that the annual parade in New York City is about entertainment, not advocacy, and that Macy's was making the change "to prevent any further distraction from our entertainment mission."
The South Dakota float, which has appeared each year since 2010, features Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, the Black Hills and more.

In Yoko Ono's new exhibition "War is Over (if you want it)" in Australia, the writer, artist and peace activist hopes to unite people to dream and work towards a better future through art.
"It's what we can do to change society," Ono, the widow of Beatles frontman John Lennon, told a news conference at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, where the show opens on Friday and runs until late February.
The interactive parts of the exhibition were designed to encourage collaboration between people, linked to a central theme of world peace, she said.
The mixed-media presentation, Ono's first solo show in Australia, features works from more than five decades including sculptures, vintage collage spreads and a chess game with all-white pieces.

Bob Dylan is highlighting the iron in his soul in an art exhibition in London.
The show at the Halcyon Gallery features iron gates and sculptures by the musician, who has said that his early years in Minnesota's "iron-ore country" sparked a lifelong fascination with metal.
The "Mood Swings" show includes seven iron gates welded by Dylan from scrap iron and other metal parts, including a wrench, a roller skate, a meat grinder and lawn tools.
The exhibition also includes paintings and car doors full of bullet holes alongside newspaper reports about underworld icons including Pretty Boy Floyd and Machine Gun Kelly.
CBS is planning a two-hour special to mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' groundbreaking first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
The Feb. 9 special will be billed as a Grammy Awards salute to the Beatles. It will be recorded the day after the Grammys are held two weeks earlier. Top contemporary artists will cover songs the Beatles performed on Sullivan, a historic night in music that launched Beatlemania in the United States.
The special will be aired 50 years to the day the Beatles appeared on Sullivan, in the same time slot and on the same network.

Newly declassified documents reveal more detail about past use of the mysterious Nevada test site known as Area 51 and the concern for maintaining secrecy about the work done at the facility.
The recently released papers, which date mostly from the early 1960s into the 1970s, spotlight the U.S. government's desire for tight security at Area 51 , also known as Groom Lake. The area was photographed with American reconnaissance assets to better assess what the Soviet Union's spy satellites might be able to discern.
The documents also detail the debate over the possible release of a photograph "inadvertently" taken of the secret facility by NASA astronauts aboard the Skylab space station in 1974. [Flying Saucers to Mind Control: 7 Declassified Military & CIA Secrets ]
More than 60 declassified documents in an Area 51 file were posted on the Internet by the National Security Archive late last month, compiled and edited by archive senior fellow Jeffrey Richelson. The archive is located at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
A prosecutor has defended her demand for jail time for a 27-year-old concert pianist and the musician's parents who were sued by a neighbor for allegedly causing years of noise pollution.
During Friday's summation, prosecutor Emma Ruiz said professional pianist Laia Martin should serve 16 months for noise pollution and four months for causing her neighbor "psychological harm." Ruiz also asked that Martin be disqualified from any professional piano playing for six months and pay a fine of 6 euros ($8) a day for nine months.
The case has caused a storm of ridicule and disbelief due to the harshness of the sentence being sought at a criminal court in the northeastern city of Girona.
For most people, noise pollution would be jet engines roaring overhead late into the night or mechanical jack-hammers pounding ceaselessly in a neighboring building site.
But for Sonia Bosom, it was Martin's practicing on the keyboard in an apartment above her, allegedly five days a week for eight hours at a sitting - from 2003 to 2007 - that prompted the legal action.

A 40-foot high Playboy bunny logo that had upset some residents of the West Texas town of Marfa will be removed from a roadside display and hauled to a Dallas museum, where it will be featured in an exhibition.
The neon bunny that's part of the "Playboy Marfa" sculpture by New York contemporary artist Richard Phillips will be dismantled this month and taken from U.S. 90 to the Dallas Contemporary museum near the city's downtown. The move to Dallas, about 500 miles northeast of Marfa, is the result of a deal with the Texas Department of Transportation.
The bunny will be installed at the museum in March and displayed in April. It will be part of an exhibition highlighting Phillips' work, said museum spokeswoman Erin Cluley.
The "Playboy Marfa" sculpture debuted last June in Marfa, about 180 miles southeast of El Paso. Some Marfa residents were upset that their town - known as a hub for artists and creative types - was being used for marketing purposes. Also, Texas transportation officials said the sculpture lacked a state permit required for outdoor billboards and moved quickly to give Playboy 45 days to remove it.
For many tourists, the experience of seeing Uluru for the first time in the middle of the Australian desert heartland brings a feeling that is difficult to suppress -- an urge to clamber up the daunting formation once known as Ayers Rock.
But while a modest link-chain rail guides climbers up the formation's steepest slopes, the traditional Aboriginal owners of Uluru, whose connections to the sacred site date back tens of thousands of years, don't want climbers -- especially given that more than 35 people have died attempting the physically demanding feat.
"Uluru is sacred in our culture. It is a place of great knowledge," the traditional Anangu owners say in a sign at the base of the rock which is translated into six more languages.
"Under our traditional law climbing is not permitted.
For visitor safety, cultural and environmental reasons the park is working towards closing the climb. It is currently left up to visitors to decide whether they tackle the sandstone monolith which rises 348 metres (1,148 feet).
For years, scientists have been dogged by this evolution question: Just where did man's best friend first appear?
The earliest known doglike fossils come from Europe. But DNA studies have implicated east Asia and the Middle East. Now a large DNA study is lining up with the fossils, suggesting dogs originated in Europe some 19,000 to 32,000 years ago.
Scientists generally agree that dogs emerged from wolves to become the first domesticated animal. Their wolf ancestors began to associate with people, maybe drawn by food in garbage dumps and carcasses left by human hunters. In the process they became tamer, and scientists believe people found them useful for things like hunting and guard duty. Over a very long time in this human environment, wolves gradually turned into the first dogs.
Researchers gathered DNA from fossils of 18 ancient wolflike and doglike creatures that lived up to 36,000 years ago in Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the United States. They compared the genetic material to modern samples from 49 wolves from North America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, 77 dogs of a wide variety of breeds including cocker spaniel, basenji and golden retriever, and four coyotes.
The DNA of modern dogs showed similarities to the genetic material from the ancient European specimens and modern-day European wolves, the researchers reported.
