After 80 years of trying - and against enormous and continuing opposition from the Republican Party - we have finally got health care reform moving . . . and on a model conceived by a Republican think tank and launched with success by a Republican governor who heralded it as a model for the nation (before he started running for his party's Presidential nomination in 2012, at which point he denounced it).

Some books are more important than others. "Knocking on Heaven's Door," by Katy Butler, is such a book. It is a step-by-step account of a journey, a walk through the valley of the shadow of death. It is written with an amazing mixture of lucidity and heart. It is a candle in the darkness that we all face when we cope with the death of our parents, anyone we love - and maybe ourselves.

Marriage means financial security and more spending, which boosts the economy. Are singletons selfish, or pragmatic?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

On the old TV series Rhoda, who played Carlton the never-seen doorman's mother?

      Ruth Gordon                                                      Source

Ruth Gordon Jones (October 30, 1896 - August 28, 1985), better known as Ruth Gordon, was an American actress and writer. She was perhaps best known for her film roles such as Minnie Castevet, Rosemary's overly solicitous neighbor in Rosemary's Baby, as the eccentric Maude in Harold and Maude and as the mother of Orville Boggs in the Clint Eastwood film Every Which Way but Loose. In addition to her acting career, Gordon wrote numerous well-known plays, film scripts and books. Gordon won an Academy Award, an Emmy and two Golden Globe awards for her acting, as well as three Academy Award nominations for her writing.

She went on to appear in twenty-two more films and at least that many television appearances through her seventies and eighties, including such successful sitcoms as Rhoda (as Carlton the invisible doorman's mother, which earned her another Emmy nomination) and Newhart.        Source

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
   Ruth Gordon

Alan J responded:
   Lorenzo Music

Lois, the pathetic person who is in love with cartoon men, Of Oregon wrote:
Oh, believe me when I say I did NOT have to look this one up! Cartoon Peter Venkman was SO funny and had SUCH a sexy voice, although frankly, Cartoon Egon WAS a lot hotter (a TEN on the NERD SCALE). "The Real Ghostbusters" was the bestest thing in the whole entire universe until Lorinzo Music left to be Garfield the cat. I will never, ever, forgive him for that. May he rest in peace.

Jim from CA, retired to ID, replied:
   Ruth Gordon

Adam answered:
   The incomparable Ruth Gordon.

Sally said:
I had to think about this, but if my memory serves, it was Ruth Gordon who played Carlton the never-seen doorman's mother to the TV series, Rhoda.

I put the lights out around 6:30 last night (after dark) because it was raining pretty hard by then (boo)! I did have about 30 little ones, and I noticed that they all said, "Thank you" for their hand-outs! I was impressed.

Marian responded:
   Ruth Gordon

Low Dale in Diamond Springy, Norcali, replied:
Lorenzo Music was never seen on "Rhoda" (1974) as Carlton the doorman - and becoming well-known for it - gave him the idea of never being photographed directly in public or on film. Either he'd have something blocking his face, or he'd only be seen in silhouette. That was cool! The only cool thing about that show. Can’t stand her, even though she’s in a fight for her life and financial future. What the fuck ever happened to David Groh? Haven’t seen him in a long time. Oh, wiki sez he crumped in 2008.

And, Joe S     answered:
Wow. I didn't even know Carlton had a mother. Well, everyone has a mother I suppose except Hanna and those clones on Orphan Black. But I don't remember Carlton having a TV mother. I remember Rhoda's mother, played by Nancy Walker, but not Carlton's mother. Is this a trick question? Is the correct answer, "No one?" I think it is.

New Project

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary Rodham Clinton announced a new initiative Friday called "No Ceilings" to empower women and children around the globe. The project could serve as the basis of a recurring campaign theme if she decides to run for president again.

Clinton said the initiative, launched through the Clinton Foundation, will look at the progress made by women and chart a path toward full participation in the economy and society. The former secretary of state said at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women that too many women face ceilings "that hold back their ambitions and aspirations."

"I believe that women everywhere can be and are agents of change, drivers of progress, makers of peace," Clinton said. "All we need is a fighting chance to show what we can do in every part of life."

Addressing 7,000 people at the women's conference, Clinton made no mention of a future presidential campaign but struck themes of women's empowerment that could be part of a future campaign to become the first woman to win the White House.

Painting Auctioned

Banksy

This undated file photo provided by Housing Works shows a painting, which includes an addition to the scene by the secretive British graffiti artist Banksy. The painting was auctioned off Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, for $615,000. The original painting first sold for $50 at a Manhattan thrift shop that benefits Housing Works, an organization that fights homelessness and AIDS. Banksy added a Nazi soldier to the landscape scene and Housing Works sold it in an online auction. Guerilla graffiti artist Banksy has helped to raise $615,000 (£410,000) to aid the homeless after donating a painting to a New York charity store.

The enigmatic British star purchased a $50 (£33) oil painting of a mountain scene by obscure artist K. Sager from the Housing Works Thrift Shop in Manhattan's Gramercy neighbourhood weeks ago, and quietly returned it on Tuesday (29Oct13) after adding a Nazi soldier admiring the scenery.

Josh Haskins, the store assistant manager, says, "Someone showed up at the counter and told a volunteer to get the manager, saying, 'A valuable piece of art is here.' He then just walked away."

Bosses soon realised the 'vandalised' image was the work of Banksy, who staged an art residency in New York for the month of October (13), and their suspicions were confirmed after he shared a photo of the updated painting on his official Instagram.com page.

They placed it up for auction online and the piece sold for $615,000 on Thursday (31Oct13).

'Thankful' For Comments

Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono says she's thankful Paul McCartney appears to have gotten over his grudge against her.

McCartney, in a recent Rolling Stone interview, said he's getting along fine with the widow of John Lennon, his old songwriting partner. The bad feelings had gone back decades, to when the Beatles were falling apart and other group members resented the appearance of Lennon's new girlfriend in the recording studio.

McCartney said that time was a great healer and thought that "if John loved her, there's got to be something. He's not stupid." He said once he decided to let go of his grudge that they've been getting along fine.

Ono, in an interview with The Associated Press, said Wednesday it was good to hear those words from McCartney and "I'm very thankful."

Quietly Help Campaign

Saudi Men

A growing number of men are quietly helping steer a campaign to end Saudi Arabia's ban on allowing women to drive, risking their jobs and social condemnation in the conservative kingdom.

Some of the men have even been questioned by authorities, and one was detained by a branch of the Saudi Interior Ministry - a move that sent a chill through some of the activists working to put women behind the wheel.

In the run-up to the weekend protest, men played a key role in helping wives, sisters and female friends to enjoy what they believe is a fundamental right.

Since the campaign was launched in September, they have produced videos of women driving and put them on social networks.

They have helped protect the female drivers by forming packs of two or three cars to surround them and ward off potential harassment.

Hacking

Rupert

A prosecutor gave jurors juicy details of tabloid misbehavior at Britain's phone hacking trial on Friday, describing how journalists targeted celebrities, government ministers and even Princes William and Harry.

The never-ending demand for royal stories at Rupert Murdoch's British tabloids led employees to hack voicemail messages left by the princes, target senior aides and pay thousands of pounds for a photo of Prince William in a bikini, prosecutor Andrew Edis said.

Journalists at Murdoch's News of the World routinely used phone hacking to back up tips and find evidence for stories, he said - using a "perfectly rational but entirely illegal system."

In three days of opening statements, Edis has taken the jury at London's Central Criminal Court on a methodical journey through the "dog-eat-dog" tabloid battle for scoops.

Former News of the World editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, both 45; Brooks' husband Charles and five former staff of Murdoch's British newspapers are on trial in the first major criminal case spawned by the revelation in 2011 that employees of the tabloid eavesdropped on the voice mails of celebrities, politicians, top athletes and even crime victims.

Art of the American Frontier from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West," at the High Museum of Art, Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in Atlanta. Atlanta's High Museum of Art is hosting an exhibition of art and historic artifacts that explore the settlement of the American West and the evolving views of the land and people the earliest arrivals encountered. Slams Taiwan Paparazzi

Luc Besson

French film director Luc Besson on Friday slammed paparazzi in Taiwan for interfering with the shooting of his latest film starring Scarlett Johansson, but denied reports that he considered leaving the island early to underscore his disgust over their actions.

Besson spent 11 days in Taipei filming "Lucy" with Johansson, who plays a drug mule whose contact with a "super-serum" endows her with superhuman abilities.

Meeting reporters in Taipei a day after he finished shooting the Taiwan part of the film, Besson blasted the paparazzi for dogging the production, saying it was his right as a director to keep details, such as Johansson's hair style and her wardrobe, out of the public eye until "Lucy" is released.

Besson singled out two unnamed agencies from Hong Kong for special condemnation, but labeled as incorrect news reports that he wanted to leave Taiwan early to register his disapproval of their actions.

Traditional offerings for All Saints' Day celebrations are seeb in La Paz, November 1, 2013. Traditionally, indigenous Bolivians celebrate All Saints Day by paying homage to their dead ones with a feast of home-baked, doll-shaped breads, fresh fruit and coca leaves and flowers. The syncretism practiced by the Aymaras, a blend of Catholicism and indigenous beliefs, calls for the offerings to be neatly placed on top of graves, and then to give them away to beggars, who in exchange say prayers for the souls of the dead ones.

Judge Clears Way For Domestic Slaughter

Horses

A federal judge on Friday cleared the way for horse slaughterhouses to resume operating in the U.S. as early as next week.

U.S. District Judge Christina Armijo in Albuquerque threw out a lawsuit by The Humane Society of the United States and other animal protection groups that alleged the Department of Agriculture failed to conduct proper environmental studies when it issued permits to Valley Meat Co. in Roswell, N.M., and an Iowa company to slaughter horses for human consumption.

The decision ends, for now, a two-year battle by Valley Meat to open its slaughterhouse.

Plant owner Rick De Los Santos and his attorney, Blair Dunn, admitted they were surprised when the ruling came down, hours after a temporary restraining order that barred the companies from opening in August had expired.

The Humane Society, joined by the state of New Mexico, filed an almost immediate appeal to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver.

Dying At Record Rates

Manatees

Toxic algae blooms that deplete the water of essential oxygen are killing a record number of manatees in Florida this year, biologists say.

A total of 769 manatees have died trough Tuesday, making 2013 the deadliest year ever for the blubbery denizens of the deep found off the Florida coast, Save the Manatee Club announced.

With more than two months left this year, nearly twice the number of manatees have already died compared to all of 2012, which saw 392 confirmed manatee deaths.

The last record -- 766 dead manatees -- was set in 2010, when an unusually cold winter and spring killed hundreds of the delicate creatures, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Extremists Driving Agenda

GOP

Virtually unknown outside Washington, a coalition of hardline conservative groups is fighting to seize control of the Republican agenda.

Tea party allies like the Club for Growth, FreedomWorks and Heritage Action for America showed their might by insisting that the GOP embrace the government shutdown that hurt the nation's economy and the party's reputation.

Now emboldened, these groups are warning that their aggressive agenda-pushing tactics aren't over - and they're threatening retribution against Republicans who stand in their way.

"They refuse to learn," Chris Chocola, a former Indiana congressman who leads the Club for Growth, says of lawmakers who buck the will of right-leaning groups. His group is already seeking or supporting primary challengers for 10 congressional Republican incumbents seeking re-election next fall.

Mainstream GOP groups - such as Karl Rove's American Crossroads or the party's formal campaign committees - question their more conservative counterparts' role, fed up by their outsized influence in shaping the party's current agenda.

1910 British Naval Cannon Found

Gaza Strip

Curious Gaza Strip residents on Thursday inspected a British navy cannon dating from 1910, which was put on display after it was hauled from the sea by local fishermen.

"The cannon is English-manufactured from 1910," declared Saeed Nasser, mayor of the coastal town of Deir al-Balah, the off shores of which the seven-metre, 8.5-tonne gun was discovered.

Gaza's police chief Ayyub Abu Shaar told AFP that fishermen had come across the cannon and informed the police, who brought along a larger boat to haul it up.

The gun's inscriptions say it dates from 1910, and local media reported that it would have been used against the Ottomans during the First World War, when British troops swept into Palestine from Egypt.

Orcas Surround Ferry

Seattle

A large pod of orcas swam around a Washington state ferry that was carrying tribal artifacts to a new museum at the ancestral home of Chief Seattle, and some people think it was more than a coincidence.

Killer whales have been thrilling whale watchers this week in Puget Sound, according to the Orca Network, which tracks sightings.

But they were especially exciting Tuesday when nearly three-dozen orcas surrounded the ferry from Seattle as it approached the terminal on Bainbridge Island. On board were officials from The Burke Museum in Seattle who were moving ancient artifacts to the Suquamish Museum.

The artifacts were dug up nearly 60 years ago from the site of the Old Man House, the winter village for the Suquamish tribe and home of Chief Sealth, also known as Chief Seattle. The Burke, a natural history museum on the University of Washington campus, is known for Northwest Coast and Alaska Native art.

The Old Man House - the largest known longhouse on the Salish Sea - was located at Suquamish on the shore of Agate Passage, about 13 miles northwest of Seattle. Chief Sealth, for whom Seattle is named, is buried there.

More than 150 falcons from around the Gulf region, including Egypt and Iran, were auctioned during a two-day event that brought in breeders from all over the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The bid went as high as 51,000 Qatari Riyals ($14,000) for this falcon, but did not reach its minimum value set by the breeder.
