B.T. Doran: The 5 Most Evil Ways Anyone Ever Got Rich (Cracked)
We tend to think of homicidal maniacs as being in the murder business purely for the delight that comes with being an evil little shit goblin. But … there have been plenty of psychopathic killers throughout history for whom a lifetime of mayhem and mutilation was simply their way of paying the bills.
Photographer Reveals What Hides Under Tattooed People's Everyday Clothes (Bored Panda)
People who love to get tattoos come in all different shapes and sizes, which London-based photographer Alan Powdrill proves in his new Covered photo series. The people in his series, many of whom are tattooed chin-to-toe, are all walking, breathing works of art.
The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of 20 people, most of them women, and most by hanging. 12 other women had previously been executed in Massachusetts and Connecticut during the 17th century. Despite being generally known as the Salem witch trials, the preliminary hearings in 1692 were conducted in several towns: Salem Village (now Danvers), Salem Town, Ipswich and Andover. The most infamous trials were conducted by the Court of Oyer and Terminer in 1692 in Salem Town.
The episode is one of the nation's most notorious cases of mass hysteria, and has been used in political rhetoric and popular literature as a vivid cautionary tale about the dangers of isolationism, religious extremism, false accusations and lapses in due process. It was not unique, but simply an American example of the much broader phenomenon of witch trials in the Early Modern period. Many historians consider the lasting effects of the trials to have been highly influential in subsequent United States history.

If I rember correctly, it was 20; 19 were hanged and one, an old man,
was pressed to death.
Jim from CA, retired to ID, said:
Nineteen accused witches were hanged on Gallows Hill in 1692
Marian responded:
19 hanged, one pressed to death and more died in prison.
Dale of Fine Fall, Diamond Springs, Norfuckincali replied:
According to "The "Smithsonian"19 were hanged on Gallows Hill, a 71-year-old man was pressed to death with heavy stones, several people died in jail and nearly 200 people, overall, had been accused of practicing "the Devil's magic." They even allowed spectral evidence-testimony about dreams and visions to condemn the wicked witches.

You've got me stumped. In Texas they mostly say that no one was actually burned as witches,

Lois Of The Coven answered:
Proud moments in American History, The Salem Witch Trials: 200 people falsely imprisoned and 20 murdered in a fifteen month period of extreme "Christian Values" enforcement, which no doubt had some small influence on our "founding fathers" ( that and maybe The Spanish Inquisition, and, oh yeah, the whole "Divine Right of Kings" thing to do whatever the hell they want to us, by the way thanks a bunch for THAT one, God ) when they decided to slip that subtle Separation of Church and State concept into the first amendment , which has been TOTALLY lost on all these fucking atavistic morons who have never paid attention to history or read a book and goddamn it, we are so fucking doomed...AARRGGHH...OK, time to get drunk.

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski on Friday said he was "very happy" that a Polish court rejected a bid to extradite him to the United States to face sentencing for the rape of a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
"I'm obviously very happy that this case is coming to an end. It cost me a lot of energy, health," the 82-year-old told reporters in the southern city of Krakow where the court is located.
"I'm glad I put faith in the Polish justice system," the Polish-French fugitive added after the court ruled "inadmissibility in extraditing" Polanski.
Presiding judge Dariusz Mazur criticised the original US investigation in his two-and-a-half-hour ruling, saying the judges and prosecutors there "seriously broke the rules of a fair trial".
"Had Poland accepted the US extradition request, it would have violated the rights of Mr Polanski and at the same time the European Convention on Human Rights," the judge decided.
The wolf OR-7 became globally famous when he took off from his northeast Oregon pack four years ago and wandered thousands of miles in search of a mate, his movement tracked by a GPS satellite.
Wildlife officials say the collar that transmitted his location through satellites and radio signals has stopped working.
"It all finally wore out," said John Stephenson, Oregon wolf coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Bend. "The battery died, basically."
Knowing the electronics were close to blinking out, state and federal wildlife managers made three attempts - last summer, last fall and early this spring - to trap OR-7 or another member of his Rogue Pack, said Mark Vargas, district wildlife biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Medford.

Pope Francis has strongly denounced the Catholic priests and bishops who "defamed" Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero after his murder in a campaign that delayed his beatification until earlier this year.
Francis spoke off-the-cuff Friday to a group of Salvadoran bishops and pilgrims who traveled to Rome to thank history's first Latin American pope for beatifying the hero to the continent's poor and oppressed.
"I was a young priest then and I was a witness to this," Francis said. "He was defamed, calumnied and had dirt thrown on his name - his martyrdom continued even by his brothers in the priesthood and episcopate."
He said Romero was "stoned with the hardest stone that exists in the world: the tongue."
Romero was gunned down by right-wing death squads as he celebrated Mass in a hospital chapel in San Salvador. He had spoken out against repression by the army at the beginning of El Salvador's 1980-1992 civil war between the right-wing government and leftist rebels, a conflict that killed nearly 75,000 people.
Still annoyed by CNBC's handling of this week's presidential debate, the Republican National Committee said Friday that it was suspending its partnership with NBC News and its properties on a primary debate scheduled for February.
NBC News said it was disappointed in the development and will work to resolve the issue with the GOP.
It was unclear in the letter from RNC Chairman Reince Priebus (R-Pendejo) to NBC News chief Andrew Lack (R-For Sale) whether the party would forbid NBC from televising the Feb. 26 debate and open up the broadcast rights to others. The debate was expected to be telecast on NBC and its Spanish-language partner, Telemundo.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials said it was "extremely disappointed" by the RNC's decision, given NBC's partnership with Telemundo. Relations between Republicans and Latino voters were already strained over Trump's comments on immigration.
Telemundo was the only Spanish-language partner for a Republican debate, the group said, and it is vital for the candidates to address the concerns of Latino voters.

Former N.W.A. manager Jerry Heller filed a multimillion dollar defamation lawsuit Friday over the hit film "Straight Outta Compton," claiming it portrayed him as a villain who led to the breakup of the gangster rap group.
Heller, who is portrayed in the film by Paul Giamatti, sued former N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, the widow of rapper Eazy-E, and NBC Universal, which released the film in August.
"Straight Outta Compton" was a hit, earning nearly $160 million domestically in the first six weeks after it was released in August.
Heller claims the film portrays him as a villain who led to the breakup of N.W.A., which launched the careers for Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and sparked the rise in popularity of gangster rap. The film is uses elements of a script that Heller commissioned, and violates his copyright in a memoir that included his description of key moments depicted in the film, the lawsuit states.
"The film is littered with false statements that harm the reputation of (Heller) and aim to ridicule and lower him in the opinion of the community and to deter third persons from associating or dealing with him," the lawsuit states.

The FBI deployed at least 10 flights of surveillance planes equipped with advanced aerial surveillance technology, including infrared and night-vision cameras, to monitor the Baltimore riots earlier this year, according to government documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The flights, totaling more than 36 hours and involving at least two planes, occurred over Baltimore from April 29 to May 3, showed the flight logs provided to the ACLU under the Freedom of Information Act. The ACLU, a civil rights group, released the logs to Reuters and other news organizations on Friday.
Half of the flights carried Baltimore police, in addition to FBI officials, and a majority of them occurred at night over Baltimore during several days of civil disorder that followed the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody.
In congressional testimony last week, FBI Director James Comey did not elaborate in detail on how surveillance flights are conducted or approved.
But he acknowledged that planes were also used at the request of local authorities during protests last year in Ferguson, Missouri, after the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, by a white police officer.

This was something that had never been seen before - the full skeletal remains of a baby Pentaceratops, a plant-eating dinosaur with large horns that once roamed what is now North America tens of millions of years ago.
The fossils first caught the attention of paleontologists with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science during a trek through the badlands of the Bisti Wilderness in northwestern New Mexico in 2011.
After years of hard work and some paper pushing, a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter plucked the baby Pentaceratops' skull - encased in plaster - from the wilderness and airlifted it to a waiting cargo truck on Thursday morning. The team also airlifted the skull of an adult Pentaceratops that was found about 10 miles away.
The mission was mostly a success. Muddy conditions prevented the team from transporting a third and final plaster jacket that contained the remainder of the baby's skeleton. That will happen later.
Traditional means for excavating and removing the fossils were out the window because crews were working within wilderness, museum curator Spencer Lucas said. No vehicles or mechanized equipment are allowed.

Al Molinaro, who played Al Delvecchio, the owner of Arnold's Drive-In, on the popular ABC sitcom Happy Days, died Thursday in a Wisconsin hospital, according to TMZ. He was 96.
Molinaro's son confirmed the actor's death to TMZ, saying that he had gallstones and elected not to have a surgical procedure because of his age.
A native of Kenosha, Wis., Molinaro joined Happy Days - also created by Marshall - in 1974 for its second season, and his character eventually took over the diner from Pat Morita, who had played Arnold (and left for his own sitcom). Molinaro then played Al on the ABC spinoff sitcom Joanie Loves Chachi.
In 1994, Molinaro reprised the role of Al yet again, this time for Weezer's "Buddy Holly" video (directed by Spike Jonze), with the band performing at the drive-in.
He also had a regular role on the 1990-91 CBS sitcom The Family Man.
