Paul Krugman: Plutocrats Against Democracy (NY Times)
… the political right has always been uncomfortable with democracy. No matter how well conservatives do in elections, no matter how thoroughly free-market ideology dominates discourse, there is always an undercurrent of fear that the great unwashed will vote in left-wingers who will tax the rich, hand out largess to the poor, and destroy the economy.

Check out this mind-bending video that talks about the "Hubble Ultra Deep Field" image captured by NASA astronomers nearly a decade ago - a photograph that some call "the most important image ever taken."
Kate Knibbs: Lumosity's Brain Games Are Bullshit (Gizmodo)
Everyone wants to be better: more beautiful, more exciting, more intelligent. It's how the self-help industry thrives, why gyms get swamped after New Year's, why kale is a thing. It's why Lumosity, a company peddling digital games to exercise memory, can charge users $120 a year and net millions from investors.
Potty-Mouthed Princesses Drop F-Bombs for Feminism by FCKH8.com (YouTube)
Asking the question, "What's more offensive? A little girl saying f*ck or the sexist way society treats girls and women" these adorably articulate little ladies in sparkling tiaras turn the "princess in distress" stereotype on its head and contrast the F-word with words and statistics society should find shocking such as "pay inequality" and "rape."

Kristi Harrison: The 4 Reasons Renee Zellweger's Face Actually Scares Us (Cracked)
On a day when the Canadian parliament was attacked by a terrorist, a serial killer confessed to killing at least seven women in Indiana, and it was announced that an Ebola serum might be available in two weeks, everyone had one question on their minds: "What happened to Renee Zellweger's face?" Hang on to your butts, because I think I might have the answer: She changed it. End of column. Now, let's tackle global warming and save Detroit!
Adam Tod Brown: 6 Compelling Reasons to Consider Switching to Satan (Cracked)
At the risk of getting the Cracked offices fire-bombed, I'd like to pose a question: "What if Satan is the good guy?" I imagine a lot of you, upon reading that, immediately shot back with a question of your own: "How much Ancient Aliens do you fucking watch, man?"

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

Joins Facebook
Stephen Hawking
World-renowned physicist and author Stephen Hawking has joined Facebook.
Hawking became a member of the popular social networking site on Oct. 7, just weeks before the upcoming release of "The Theory of Everything," a biographical film about Hawking's relationship with his first wife Jane. The film will premiere in the United States on Nov. 7.
"I have always wondered what makes the universe exist. Time and space may forever be a mystery, but that has not stopped my pursuit," the astrophysicist wrote in his first post on Facebook. "Our connections to one another have grown infinitely and now that I have the chance, I'm eager to share this journey with you. Be curious, I know I will forever be."
The Facebook page is maintained by Hawking's team, and posts from the astrophysicist himself are signed as "SH," according to the site.

Biting Comments About Modern Architecture
Frank Gehry
Architect Frank Gehry travelled to Spain to receive a prestigious award but shocked his hosts by responding to a reporter's question with an obscene gesture and making contemptuous comments about most modern architecture.
The American-Canadian was in the northern city of Oviedo to accept one of Spain's Prince of Asturias prizes Friday.
Local media reported that on the eve of the ceremony, Gehry reacted with a rude gesture at a news conference when asked if his work was based on spectacle.
Gehry said 98 per cent of buildings today lack sensitivity and respect for humanity, according to El Pais.

Rotating Guest Hosts
'Late Late Show'
"The Late Late Show" will be getting a lot of special visitors between December and March.
The CBS late-night show will feature rotating guest hosts between Dec. 19, when long-time host Craig Ferguson exits, and March 9, 2015, when his replacement, James Corden, takes the spot, an individual familiar with the situation told TheWrap on Thursday.
Further details, including which guest hosts will fill in, were not immediately available.
Corden, who co-created and starred in the UK television series "Gavin and Stacey" and won a Tony award for the Broadway production "One Man Two Guvnors," will take over in March, bringing along his longtime friend and executive producer of the UK version of "The X Factor," Ben Winston, along with him.

New AIDS Program
Elton John
British singer and activist Elton John said on Friday a new $7 million partnership between his foundation and U.S. government agencies will help create an AIDS-free society but urged more work to reach that goal.
John met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at the State Department where they announced the joint project to help expand access to HIV services for gays and transgender individuals in Africa.
The new program called Health4Men will involve PEPFAR, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and initially focus on South Africa.
John said it was "a dream come true" to combine the efforts of his foundation with U.S. government initiatives.

Paintings Spark Probe
National Parks
A series of colorful, eerie faces painted on rocks in some of the West's most famously picturesque landscapes has sparked an investigation by the National Park Service and a furor online.
Agents so far have confirmed the images in Yosemite and four other national parks in California, Utah and Oregon. Park Service spokesman Jeffrey Olson said the vandalism could lead to felony charges for the person responsible.
The images appear to come from a New York state woman traveling across the West this summer and documenting her work on Instagram and Tumblr, said Casey Schreiner of modernhiker.com, whose blog post tipped off authorities.
The investigation is the subject of well-trafficked threads on the website Reddit, where people railed against the drawings as the defacing of irreplaceable natural landscapes.

NBCUniversal Settles
Unpaid Interns
Nearly 9,000 unpaid interns stand to benefit from a $6.4 million settlement with NBCUniversal over back wages.
Unpaid interns who worked on "Saturday Night Live" and other shows brought a class action suit last July in Manhattan federal court claiming NBCUniversal violated the law by classifying them as non-employee interns and paid them nothing or less than minimum wage, when they were actually doing employee work. NBCUniversal said in court documents that even though it's settling the suit, it denies the allegations and doesn't admit any wrongdoing.
The average amount that class-action members of the suit will receive is $505 before taxes, although the main plaintiffs will receive more. The number of class members is capped at 8,975. The interns had been seeking recovery of unpaid wages, attorneys' fees, interest and liquidated damages.
In addition to back wages, lead plaintiff Monet Eliastem will receive up to $10,000, and other named plaintiffs will receive between $2,000 and $5,000, for their efforts in bringing the class-action, according to court documents. Eliastem agreed not to apply for jobs at NBCUniversal for five years, as a stipulation of the deal.

Attorneys Claim Victimhood
Alabama
Lawyers for a man who received a $460,000 settlement after suing the city of Birmingham for police brutality said on Friday they had received harassing emails and phone calls after it was disclosed they would pocket all but $1,000 of the settlement.
"We have been called criminals, thugs, crooks, thieves, liars, cheats, and many other names," the lawyers said in a statement on Friday.
Anthony Warren's attorneys, Wendy Brooks Crew, Alyson Hood Rains and Cameron Hogan, have not responded to messages seeking comment on why Warren received only $1,000 from the settlement.
The lawyers said in their statement that Warren's family supported the settlement, and that they "continue to be in agreement in spite of the media attention."

TLC Cancels
'Honey Boo Boo'
The TLC network on Friday canceled its colorful series about child beauty pageant contestant Honey Boo Boo and her Georgia family.
The network had already completed filming of another season of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and was set to begin airing it at the end of this year.
TLC wouldn't publicly cite a reason for the cancellation, but it said in a statement that "supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority. TLC is faithfully committed to the childrens' ongoing comfort and well-being."
The cancellation came after published reports that June Shannon was dating a man with a criminal past.

New Meaning To 'Undercover'
London
Police are to pay compensation to woman who had a child with a man she did not know was an undercover agent, the Guardian and BBC reported.
The £425,000 payment follows a legal battle by several women who say they were tricked into having relationships with officers sent to spy on political activists.
Known only as "Jacqui", the woman said she had received psychiatric treatment since discovering the true identity of her child's father in a newspaper in 2012.
"He presented himself as Bob Robinson, a long-haired leftwing radical," the woman known as "Jacqui" told the Guardian.
"In reality he was a member of a secret police unit, the special demonstration squad, and was embarking on a five-year mission to infiltrate environmental and animal rights groups."
The man disappeared from her life when the child was two years old, going back to his original wife, children and identity.

New Tarantula
John Lennon
Imagine a world where a spider is named after John Lennon-because now there is.
Bumba lennoni is a new species of tarantula that lives in the Amazonian state of Pará, Brazil, according to a study published October 20 in the journal ZooKeys.
Though not particularly large-its body is about 1.3 inches (34 millimeters) wide-the newfound arachnid belongs to the same family as the dinner-plate-size Theraphosa blondi, the world's largest spider.
The tarantula is distinct from related tarantulas because of the male's smaller sexual organ and the large number of structures around the mouth called cuspules, tiny nodules that probably help the predators crush their prey, Pérez-Miles noted.

Early Computer Sells At Auction
Apple-1s
One of the few remaining examples of Apple Inc's first pre-assembled computer, Apple-1, sold for $905,000 at an auction in New York on Wednesday, far outstripping expectations.
The relic, which sparked a revolution in home computing, is thought to be one of the first batch of 50 Apple-1 machines assembled by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in Steve Job's family garage in Los Altos, California in the summer of 1976.
Auction house Bonhams had said it expected to sell the machine, which was working as of September, for between $300,000 and $500,000.
The buyer was The Henry Ford organization, which plans to display the computer in its museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
Fewer than 50 original Apple-1s are believed to survive.
