• After hearing a song by the lesbian poet Sappho, Solon was so impressed that he immediately requested that the singer teach him the song. Asked why he wanted to learn it so much, Solon replied, “So that having learned it, I may die.”
Practical Jokes
• In My Life and Hard Times, James Thurber tells about a practical joke that Roy, one of his brothers, played on their father in Columbus, Ohio, during the early days of the automobile. Roy gathered a lot of kitchen stuff — pot lids, can openers, pie plates, etc. — and put it in a canvas bag that he placed under the car and that he rigged so that the bag would open when he pulled a string. Then, when he was driving with his father in the car, he pulled the string, and the kitchenware made a wonderful racket as it fell onto the street. His father shouted, “Stop the car!” but Roy replied, “I can’t. The engine fell out.” (According to a Wikipedia article on Mr. Thurber, his mother was also a practical joker. She once pretended to be crippled, attended a religious revival event hosted by a faith healer, and jumped up, shouting that she was cured and could walk again.)
• Horace Greeley, the editor of the New York Tribune, is famous for his advice: “Go west, young man.” However, the advice resulted from a trick. Mr. Greeley visited Denver, and the people living there discovered that he was proud, so they decided to trick him. Therefore, they “salted” a claim; that is, they went to a worthless claim and sprinkled a few flakes of gold where they were sure Mr. Greeley would find them. The salting worked. Mr. Greeley panned for gold, found the flakes of gold in his pan, and told the miners, “Gentlemen, I have examined your property with my own eyes and worked some of it with my own hands and I have no hesitation in saying that your discovery is what it is represented to be — the richest and greatest in America.” Mr. Greeley then returned to New York and gave his famous advice to the young men of the United States.
• In the days when steamboats ruled the Mississippi River, steamboat clerks often played a practical joke on people who asked for a copy of a newspaper from New Orleans or some other city the steamboat had recently visited. Often, in the summer several small boats would wait while a lone boat made the hot journey across the river to the steamboat to ask for a newspaper. To this boat, the steamboat clerk would give some copies of the newspaper it had asked for. As soon as the other boats saw that the first boat’s request had been successful, they would also make the hot journey across the river and ask for a newspaper. To these boats, the steamboat clerks gave religious tracts.
• Science fiction writer Philip K. Dick enjoyed playing jokes on acquaintances who pretended to be connoisseurs when they were really not. For example, an acquaintance claimed to be a wine connoisseur, so Mr. Dick served him $3.95 Armagnac — which is not a cognac — and told him that it was Rémy-Martin cognac. The acquaintance could not tell the difference. On another occasion, an acquaintance told Mr. Dick that Mahler was his favorite composer, so Mr. Dick put a Mahler symphony on the turntable, then followed it with a Sibelius symphony. The acquaintance listened to Sibelius, then told Mr. Dick that what was playing was one of his favorite works by Mahler.
• Humorist Frank Sullivan once saw novelist Kathleen Norris on a crowded street, so as a joke he walked up behind her and asked her for money to buy a cup of coffee. However, Ms. Norris turned the joke on him. She turned to him and shouted, “Not another penny for you, Frank Sullivan. No, not another cent will you ever get out of me. Gambling and drinking it all away while your poor family suffers. Have you no shame?” Ms. Norris kept up the torrent of abuse until Mr. Sullivan was forced to flee because the crowd of bystanders was getting angry at him.

A Superbad cast reunion and watch party in support of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin will be held on October 27 at 8 PM CT.
Cast members and filmmakers from the 2007 teenage coming of age film will watch the movie with fans around the country, giving live commentary and jokes. The event will be available for a donation of any amount, and all proceeds will go towards the Democratic party.
“We are thrilled to have the cast of Superbad join us in the fight to defeat our super awful president,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler. “With the help of our talented guests, we know that we can win this election for Wisconsin and for the country. Laugh with us as we raise the funds and mobilize the volunteers we need to finish this race strong.”
Participants scheduled to appear include Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, Martha MacIssac, Evan Goldberg, director Greg Mottola, and producer Judd Apatow.
Jimmy Kimmel has shared videos and photos detailing his three-year-old son’s health battles in an effort to encourage Americans to vote in the upcoming election.
During Thursday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! the host played a video segment portraying the complications his and wife Molly McNearney’s son William “Billy” John has faced since birth.
Ahead of the clip, Kimmel said: "I want to bring us back to focus on something we can't afford to forget, and that is health care. The vast majority of this country believes that health insurance should cover Americans with pre-existing conditions."
In the emotional clip, compiled by McNearney, it shows Billy as an infant in the NICU, as well as footage from some of his more than 60 doctor appointments over three years.
“This is what it looks like to have a ‘pre-existing’ condition,” the video reads.
Family and friends of late MythBusters host Grant Imahara have established a foundation in his name to inspire and empower underserved youth to become active in science, technology, engineering, art and math.
The Grant Imahara STEAM Foundation was officially announced Friday during a public online celebration of Grant’s life, on what would have been his 50th birthday. The nonprofit foundation will continue his legacy through mentorships, grants and scholarships designed to provide access to STEAM education to all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, race or gender.
“There are many students, like my son Grant, who need the balance of the technical and the creative, and this is what STEAM is all about,” said Carolyn Imahara, Grant’s mother and foundation co-founder. “I’m so proud of my son’s career, but I’m equally proud of the work he did mentoring students. He would be thrilled that we plan to continue this, plus much more, through The Grant Imahara STEAM Foundation.”
Best known as host of the television series MythBusters, Imahara was a noted robotics engineer who held positions at both Lucasfilm and Industrial Light + Magic.
Arlo Guthrie took to Facebook on Friday to announce his retirement from touring.
In a lengthy post titled “Gone Fishing,” the folk singer-songwriter explained that he’s canceled his upcoming show. He also revealed that prior to the pandemic, he’d experienced several mini strokes — the first occurring in 2016.
“I got really dizzy in the parking lot of the hotel, and started seeing as though I were looking through a kaleidoscope,” he said. “That evening the show went on as though nothing had happened. I had no idea I’d just encountered a mini stroke until weeks later, when I was told about it. It didn’t appear to affect my performance, or my state of being. I continued touring for the next 4 years.”
Guthrie suffered another stroke on Thanksgiving Day of November 2019, noting the irony of his classic holiday song, “Alice’s Restaurant.” He spent an evening in the hospital, but left the next day to perform a show at New York’s Carnegie Hall. However, he returned to the hospital in Florida several days later when he experienced pain on both sides of his body. “They kept me there for 3 days, running tests of all kinds, and essentially informed me that I’d suffered a stroke,” he said. “This time was more serious, as I’d lost some ability to walk, and I wondered if if would be able to play music.”
“A folksinger’s shelf life may be a lot longer than a dancer or an athlete, but at some point, unless you’re incredibly fortunate or just plain whacko (either one or both) it’s time to hang up the “Gone Fishing” sign,” he said. “Going from town to town and doing stage shows, remaining on the road is no longer an option…I’m happy, healthy and good to go, even if I’m not going anywhere.”
Melissa Francis, a regular on Rupert's Fox News talk show Outnumbered and co-anchor of Fox Business’ After the Bell, has not been on the network since October 7 and her future is uncertain.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Francis is in the middle of a gender-based pay discrimination claim against the company that is in the midst of arbitration.
Francis joined Fox Business in 2012 and has been a regular on Outnumbered, its popular daytime show, since 2014. She also worked as a reporter for CNBC and CNET.
According to the Times, Francis’ complaint centers on her claim that she is underpaid compared to male colleagues at the network.
Developers will start rolling out their COVID-19 vaccines in the coming months, leaving U.S. health officials to test their long-term safety. But that won't be easy, especially given that the Trump administration quietly shut down the office responsible for ensuring the safety of vaccines last year, The New York Times reports.
Before the late 1980s, vaccine safety relied on parents, doctors, vaccine makers, and hospitals to step forward and report symptoms they feared were connected to a vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention then worked out a new system that sought out clusters of symptoms among people who receive a vaccine, and expanded that oversight during the H1N1 epidemic of 2009. This system helped the U.S. figure out which symptoms actually popped up long after a vaccine was injected, and which were just coincidental.
But in 2019, the National Vaccine Program Office was shut down in an effort to cut costs and "eliminate program redundancies," Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar (R-Big Pharma) wrote at the time. The shortsightedness of that shutdown has come into clear view amid the coronavirus pandemic, said Dr. Nicole Lurie, who who was assistant secretary for preparedness and response at HHS during the 2009 pandemic. FDA and CDC staffers have reportedly been meeting up on their own time to cobble some safety projects together. "There's no sort of active coordination to bring all the information together," Lurie told the Times.
Other vaccine experts and political scientists have their own concerns: foreign disinformation campaigns, a lack of transparency, proper communications to clear up health issues unrelated to vaccines, to name a few. A coordinated vaccine office would be tasked with handling all of that.
The Coca-Cola Company is cutting its portfolio in half, kicking at least 200 beverage brands to the curb by end of year.
The money-saving move will allow Coke to focus on its most profitable products so that it may “emerge stronger from the pandemic,” the company said in a news release Thursday.
The news comes nearly a week after the beverage giant announced it would discontinue its once popular sugar-free soft drink Tab after more than 60 years on shelves across the world. Other “underperforming” brands on the way out include Odwalla, ZICO coconut water, Diet Coke Feisty Cherry and regional offerings like Northern Neck Ginger Ale, the company said.
Popular “hydration” brands including Powerade and Dasani could also see cuts, Coca Cola’s chairman and CEO James Quincey told CNN.
Scientists have reconstructed a long-lost tectonic plate that may have given rise to an arc of volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean 60 million years ago.
The plate, dubbed Resurrection, has long been controversial among geophysicists, as some believe it never existed. But the new reconstruction puts the edge of the rocky plate along a line of known ancient volcanoes, suggesting that it was once part of the crust (Earth's top layer) in what is today northern Canada.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," Jonny Wu, a geologist at the University of Houston, said in a statement. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the Earth and understand how climate has changed ... you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on Earth."
Wu and his co-author, University of Houston geology doctoral candidate Spencer Fuston, used a computer model of Earth's crust to "unfold" the movement of tectonic plates since the early Cenozoic, the geological era that began 66 million years ago. Geophysicists already knew that there were two plates in the Pacific at that time, the Kula plate and the Farallon plate.
Because lots of magma is present east of the former location of these plates in what is today Alaska and Washington, some geophysicists argued there was a missing piece in the puzzle — a theoretical plate they called Resurrection. This magma would have been left behind by volcanic activity at the plate's edge.
Scientists have created a super white paint that is the yin to Vantablack's yang.
While ultra black materials can today absorb more than 99.96 percent of sunlight, this new super white coat can reflect 95.5 percent of all the photons that hit it.
Instead of warming up under direct light, objects painted with this new acrylic material can remain cooler than their surrounding temperature even under the Sun, which could allow for a new energy-efficient way to control temperature inside buildings.
Other "heat rejecting paints" we currently have can only reflect 80 to 90 percent of sunlight and cannot achieve lower-than-ambient temperatures.
