'COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY'
from tim h
In the face of the controversial decision by the PBS network to refuse to
transmit the investigative report, the nation's top PBS stations will independently
broadcast COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY.
Directed by Emmy-award winner Danny Schechter, the 57-minute
documentary follows BBC television reporter Greg Palast as he discovers how Katherine
Harris removed up to 57,000 legal voters from registries - mostly black - five months before
the 2000 election. While the public broadcast network chiefs refused to schedule
this important report, dozens of local stations are insisting on showing the expose
before the mid-term elections.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Cool enough to start closing windows. Fall must be here - hard to tell by the local trees. Palm fronds (thankfully) don't drop in autumn.
Have fallen way behind in correspondence. Rob sent me a really cool picture, but it was larger than the page....argh! For some photo-shop skills!
Local TV seems to be rooting for another 'World Series' earthquake, like the last time the series was all-CA. They're absolutely a-quiver over the prospect, and even trying to give creedence to the 'effect' of a full moon on Monday - Sybil the Soothsayer must already be on the payroll...
Got some of the Vegas film developed. No, nothing BartFest-ish. Had 3 cameras there & didn't take a single picture - but, did take pics of other things ; )
Tonight, Saturday, CBS opens with a fresh 'Touched By An Angle', then a fresh 'The District' followed by a fresh 'The Agency'.
NBC has a fresh 'Forensic Files' and then the movie 'Bowfinger' with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. A fresh 'Saturday Night Live' is hosted by Senator John McCain with 'White Stripes' as the musical guest.
ABC has the movie 'Lethal Weapon 3'.
The WB has the movie 'Married To The Mob'.
Faux has game 1 of the 'World Series', and will most likely fill with 'Cops' & 'Drew Carey'.
UPN has the movie 'The Right Connections'.

Bill Clinton In Baltimore
Former President Bill Clinton and Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend greet supporters at a campaign rally at Coppin State University in Baltimore Friday, Oct. 18, 2002. Two days after his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton helped Townsend raise nearly $100,000 for her Democratic
campaign for governor, the former President paid a visit Friday that's expected to generate $500,000.

Sean Penn
Actor Sean Penn on Friday weighed in on the international debate over a possible war with Iraq, paying for a $56,000 advertisement in the Washington Post accusing President Bush
of stifling debate and threatening civil liberties.
In an open letter to Bush taking up most of a page in the main section of the daily newspaper, the Oscar-nominated star of "I Am Sam" and "Dead Man Walking," urged the president
to stop a cycle where "bombing is answered by bombing, mutilation by mutilation, killing by killing."
"I beg you, help save America before yours is a legacy of shame and horror," Penn wrote, echoing voices of caution from around the world that have called for a measured response
to allegations Iraq is developing weapons of mass destruction.
Quoting Bush's declaration that the world was either "with us or against us" in the war on terrorism launched after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Penn, 42, said Bush was marginalizing
critics, manipulating the media and promoting fear.
Those actions and "your administration's deconstruction of civil liberties all contradict the very core of the patriotism you claim," wrote Penn, who is married to actress Robin
Wright Penn, and was formerly married to pop star Madonna.
"Sacrificing American soldiers or innocent civilians in an unprecedented preemptive attack on a separate sovereign nation may well prove itself a most temporary medicine," he said.

Ads Caught In The Crosshairs
'24'
The Washington-area sniper is causing havoc in Hollywood, too. Fox Television is pulling ads for the Kiefer Sutherland thriller series "24" — which showed a sharpshooter's crosshairs — after
a number of people complained to the network.
"I was pretty shocked when a target appeared in a pop up ad on my computer screen," a source told the Scoop. "Given the situation with the D.C. sniper, it's really inappropriate." Twentieth
Century Fox recently postponed the opening of "Phone Booth," a film about a sniper, also starring Kiefer Sutherland, as well as Colin Farrell.

Not Fond Of MIMS
John McCain
John McCain and George Bush don't like each other. The two men developed a dislike while they ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000. McCain felt the Bush campaign smeared him
and his family during the South Carolina primary. Bush got mad when McCain said Bush "twists the truth like Clinton." In his new biography of McCain, "Man of the People," Paul Alexander quotes
Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, as saying: "I can see the intensity of the animosity between the president and John." Cochran told Alexander about the time Bush met with Republican senators
last summer: "I happened to be seated by John McCain. The president was sort of working the crowd after his speech . . . He got to me, looked at me, shook hands with me, and did not even look
at John, who was standing right there beside me. He had to see him. I glanced, kind out out of the corner of my eye, after the president turned away, to see what John was doing. John was looking
straight ahead. He would not look at the president."

Screwed Again - N.Y. Court Rules
The Ronettes
The contract The Ronettes originally signed with Phil Spector is still haunting them. The New York Court of Appeals has ruled The Ronettes cannot collect royalties from the use
of their music in movies, TV and ads -- so-called "synchronization rights."
The court ruled Spector has those rights based on what they signed in 1963. The judges noted the contract doesn't mention synchronization rights, which is a modern concept. However,
since it's not specifically mentioned in the contract, The Ronettes don't have control of those rights. The judges said however sympathetic they may be to The Ronettes, the stability
of contract law demands they rule in Spector's favor.

USA Network Search
'Nashville Star'
The USA Network wants to do for country music what Fox television's "American Idol" did for pop.
The cable network announced on Friday a nationwide search for the next great country music artist, with open auditions for "Nashville Star" kicking off in Nashville on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
The winner of "Nashville Star" -- an upcoming USA Network prime-time event -- will earn a recording contract from Sony Music Nashville.

Woman Sues MTV Over Stunt
'Jackass'
A woman has sued cable TV network MTV, its parent company Viacom Inc., and a cast member of its daredevil show "Jackass," claiming she suffered injuries in a stunt performed while taping a program.
In the suit filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Wendy Linden of Riverside, California alleges she suffered spine and knee injuries after cast member David
England ran across a stage and "using his body as a missile" crashed into a lectern near Linden.
The lectern hit Linden and knocked her to the concrete floor causing the injuries, according to the suit.
The suit also alleges cast members, including star Johnny Knoxville, were given alcohol by the producers, which led to a "hostile, volatile and out-of-control" environment.

Cooks Up Reality Show For ABC
Roseanne
Five years after her landmark ABC comedy left the air, Roseanne is returning to the network -- but not the way you'd expect.
The feisty comic is set to star in an unscripted reality workplace comedy, which she'll also executive produce with documentary veteran R.J. Cutler ("American Candidate").
The deal is noteworthy not only because it represents the small screen comeback for Roseanne -- last seen in her own short-lived syndicated talk show -- but also because of
her decision to set up the new show at ABC. Her battles with ABC's previous management are near-legend in Hollywood. But whatever ill will may have existed appears gone.

Special effects master Rick Baker says that Jim Carrey is the most annoying little whiner he's ever had the displeasure to work with. "He's a baby," says Baker,

stars I've worked with, Jim definitely complained the most."

Full Season Pickup
'George Lopez'
Latino-flavored sitcom "George Lopez," showing greater ratings promise since its wobbly start last spring, received a full-season commitment on Thursday from the ABC network,
The announcement affirmed the view of the struggling Walt Disney Co. -owned network that the show named for its star, comedian George Lopez, has demonstrated wide enough appeal to
cut across ethnic lines and draw a mass audience.
The program, which airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m., marks network television's first prime-time comedy series with a predominantly Hispanic cast since Norman Lear's short-lived "A.K.A. Pablo" in 1984.
As Lopez himself is fond of saying, "We're just a regular American family -- with great tans."

Thailand Criticizes Video
Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera's new video is being criticized in Thailand and it's not for her scanty outfit or pelvic thrusts.
The protests are aimed at posters in the video that allude to Thailand's sex industry. The video for "Dirrty" features Aguilera dancing around a boxing ring with
posters in the Thai language that read, "Thailand's sex tourism" and "Young underage girls."
A government official says local and foreign businesses are too profit-oriented to present an accurate portrayal of Thailand. The government will take more action
if the video is found to be damaging to Thailand's reputation, although it did not go into details.

Speaks About Communication
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg thinks people have difficulty communicating — and belching in public might be a good start toward remedy.
"We're not great communicators as human beings," Goldberg told some 1,500 people Tuesday night at the Distinguished Speaker Series at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
It's all about communication, the 46-year-old comedian said.
"If you have some air in your stomach, wouldn't you feel more comfortable if you let it out? Imagine how great the world would be if we communicated these things," Goldberg said.

Goes Full-Frontal With Men's Fragrance Ad
Yves Saint Laurent
American designer Tom Ford has set a new milestone for sex in advertising with the print commercial for the new Yves Saint Laurent men's fragrance, which features a reclining full-frontal nude male model.
The black-and-white publicity shot for the M7 fragrance, which stars former martial arts champion Samuel de Cubber, will be published from Oct. 24 in a handful of fashion magazines, including the French edition of Vogue.
So-called porn chic has swept the advertising industry in recent years, but no company had previously dared to go all the way in showing a full-frontal nude.
"Perfume is worn on the skin, so why hide the body?" Ford, YSL's artistic director, said in a statement. "The M7 campaign is really pure, it's a very academic nude."

Judges Pop Back
'American Idol'
Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson will return for the second edition of Fox's "American Idol," joining fellow judge Simon Cowell, who had already reupped with the hit talent show.
Fox also confirmed Thursday that the next version of "American Idol" will welcome a fourth judge, who will "add a different and unique perspective" to the group.
Ryan Seacrest will return to host the next "American Idol," while insiders say it's likely he'll be paired with a female host. Original partner Brian Dunkleman earlier announced that he wouldn't return.

Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera's skanky new video "Dirrty" has turned the singing strumpet into a punchline for bad taste. In the David LaChapelle-directed clip, nearly naked Christina tarts
herself up even more by wearing kneepads on cheek-baring chaps while she bumps and grinds with a throng of well-oiled hunks. In a scathing "Saturday Night Live" parody last week,
Sarah Michelle Gellar, as Aguilera, trilled: "When people see this, they're gonna stop seeing me as a bubblegum music industry 'ho and start seeing me as an actual 'ho!" In the New
York Observer, columnist Simon Doonan clucks that the "Dirrty" video is "a world-class example of contemporary, slutty hoochie-dancing, made all the more shocking when you remember
that her audience is primarily made up of 9- to 12-year-olds."

Topping Charts Worldwide
'The Ketchup Song'
Now that the "Macarena" has become a distant memory, along comes "The Ketchup Song" — and dance.
The Spanish pop tune with gobbledygook lyrics is topping charts around the world, and it's accompanied by arm-waving, knee-knocking gyrations.
The three sisters who do the song teamed up only a year ago and named themselves Las Ketchup as an homage to their flamenco guitarist-father, nicknamed El Tomate.
Indeed, the limelight is all over the Munoz sisters — Pilar, 29; Lola, 26; and Lucia, 19 — and their song about a fashion-conscious Gypsy named Diego who makes up his own brand of rap.
Their song, known in Spanish as "Asereje," bases its lyrics on snippets from the 1979 classic "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang, but transmogrifies them with a staccato twist
from Las Ketchup's native Andalusia region.
The version released in the United States and most other non-Spanish speaking countries is called "The Ketchup Song (Hey Hah)." The refrain's the same but the intelligible part of the
song — it actually has one — switches to Spanglish.

Closing to Public
USS Constitution
The USS Constitution, at 205 years old the world's oldest commissioned warship, will be closed to visitors indefinitely amid a standoff between the U.S. Navy and the National
Park Service over security concerns and funding.
The Constitution will close to the public Monday, but will "hopefully" open again in the next two weeks, U.S. Navy spokesman Petty Officer Pete Robertson said in a statement Friday.
The Constitution, commissioned in 1797 and known as "Old Ironsides," docks at Boston's historic Charlestown Naval Yard, a national park. The ship never lost a
battle, from fighting pirates in the Caribbean to British in the War of 1812. Active-duty sailors dressed in vintage 1812 uniforms lead free tours of the ship.
The ship earned its "Old Ironsides" nickname by deflecting canon balls off its sturdy hull during an 1815 battle with the French, as legend has it. The hull was
bolstered by American-made copper sheets built by a Paul Revere-owned company.

Spotted In Alaska
Plane-Sized Bird
A bird the size of a small airplane was recently spotted flying over southwest Alaska, puzzling scientists, the Anchorage Daily News has reported.
The newspaper quoted residents in the villages of Togiak and Manokotak as saying the creature, like something out of the movie "Jurassic Park," had a wingspan of 14 feet (4.6 metres) -- making it the size of a small airplane.
"At first I thought it was one of those old-time Otter planes," the paper quoted Moses Coupchiak, 43, a heavy equipment operator from Togiak, as saying. "Instead of continuing toward me, it banked to the
left, and that's when I noticed it wasn't a plane."
The Daily News, the largest daily in Alaska, said scientists had no doubt that people in the region, west of Dillingham, had seen the winged creature but they were skeptical about its reported size.
Another local resident, a pilot who had initially dismissed the reports, said he recently saw the bird from a distance of just 1,000 feet (300 metres) while flying his airplane.
"The people in the plane saw him," John Bouker was quoted as saying. "He's huge, he's huge, he's really, really big. You wouldn't want to have your children out."

Can Predict Penis Size
Index Finger
On the heels of a previous report that debunked the notion that a man's shoe size could be used to estimate the length of his penis, a new study now claims that those with inquiring
minds need merely take a gander at a man's forefinger.
According to Greek scientists, the length of a man's index finger can accurately predict the length of his penis. The findings are published in the September issue of the journal Urology.
Dr. Evangelos Spyropoulos and colleagues from the Naval and Veterans Hospital of Athens, Greece say they conducted their investigation to gather more information on the relationship
between body measurements and male genitalia size. They argue that such information--as well as a clearer definition of "normal penile size"--will help doctors counsel and treat the
many men who are concerned about perceived inadequacies relating to their genitals.
The "lack of standardized metric data and the absence of widely acceptable criteria on the proper size of the external genitalia poses major difficulties in the counseling and/or
treatment of young adult men with worries of sexual inadequacy," the authors write.
In their study, Spyropoulos and colleagues measured penile length and testicular volume in 52 healthy young males between the ages of 19 and 38 and compared them with other body
measurements including height, weight, body mass index, index finger length and waist/hip ratio.
