Paul Krugman: Aggressive Blunderers (New York Times)
My bet now is that we actually do go over the line for a day or two. And what ends the immediate crisis is not Republican action but a decision by Obama to declare himself not bound by the debt ceiling. He can't even hint at this possibility until the thing actually happens, because he has to keep the focus on the Republicans, and he has to make them demonstrate their utter irresponsibility before he can take any extraordinary action. But maybe I'm wrong…

"It's simple: One side tried to bring healthcare to all. The other shut down the government. Which side will look like [bums] in the future? The same one that tried to stop the 40-hour work week, social security, medicare, gender parity, and marriage equality." - Stephen Driscoll
Tom Danehy: Tom pays tribute to a friend leaving Tucson for basketball glory (Tucson Weekly)
He and his team decided to play in the league anyway. One day, he brought along with him a street knucklehead who tried to draw attention to himself with the way he dressed rather than by the way he played. I looked at Stew and said, "Dude, your friend dresses like an Aztec pimp." That broke the ice and we became fast friends.

Rock music is one of the great art forms of the twentieth century But a sideline for those of us who love rock music, like the many movie fans who try to figure out or "interpret' what the filmmakers were trying to say in their movies, is trying to figure out what the songwriters were trying to say in their songs.
Exxon replaced the Esso, Enco, and Humble brands in the United States on January 1, 1973. The Esso name was a trademark of Jersey Standard Oil, and attracted protests from other Standard Oil spinoffs because of its similarity to the name of the parent company, Standard Oil. As a result, Jersey Standard was restricted from using Esso in the U.S., except in those states awarded to it in the 1911 Standard Oil antitrust settlement.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, Humble Oil continued to have difficulties promoting itself as a nationwide marketer of petroleum products, despite a number of high-profile marketing strategies. These included the popular "Put a Tiger in Your Tank" advertising campaign and accompanying tiger mascot, introduced in 1959, to promote Enco Extra and Esso Extra gasolines. Humble Oil also used similar logotypes, use of the Humble name in all Enco and Esso advertising, and uniform designs for all stations regardless of brand.

It's been 20 years since Steven Spielberg made his Oscar-winning "Schindler's List," but the director has keen memories of Holocaust survivors coming up to him during filming, wanting to tell him about their lives.
That experience, the director says, gave him the idea to launch a foundation - now called the USC Shoah Foundation - that ever since has been collecting, indexing and archiving video testimonies of Holocaust survivors, before the passage of time makes it too late. Recently the group has expanded its focus, adding testimonies of survivors of the Rwanda genocide as well.
On Thursday evening, Spielberg and his foundation marked its 20th anniversary - as well as the anniversary of "Schindler's List" - with a New York gala, honoring a fellow Hollywood heavyweight active in humanitarian work: George Clooney.
Clooney, who was awarded the Ambassador for Humanity award, told the assembled donors that "Our job is to make it hard for the bad guys to do what they're doing, and for the good guys to ignore it."

David Letterman, already the longest-tenured talk show host on late-night television, has agreed to extend his contract with CBS to remain on the "Late Show" into 2015.
The deal means Letterman will compete directly for at least a year with the two Jimmys - Kimmel, on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and Fallon, who's taking over at NBC's "Tonight" show this winter.
Letterman, 66, has been on the air for 31 years since beginning at NBC in the time slot following Johnny Carson in 1982. His contract was set to expire next summer.
It's unclear how long into 2015 the new contract extends. Neither CBS nor Letterman made any mention in Friday's announcement of this being a final contract at the "Late Show."
A Maine man who's devoted himself to honouring the memory of poets from the past has now visited 300 gravesites of poets ahead of this weekend's fourth annual Dead Poets Remembrance Day.
Walter Skold of Freeport reached the 300-grave milestone Monday when he visited the burial sites of three poets in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass.
Skold began visiting and documenting the graves of poets in 2009 in an effort to draw attention to dead and largely forgotten bards. His ultimate goal is to visit 500 gravesites.
Skold also helped create Dead Poets Remembrance Day, which kicks off Friday and continues through the weekend with poetry readings at burial sites in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Illinois and California.

America's leading animated dysfunctional family "The Simpsons" will be continuing their antics for a 26th season, the Fox broadcast network said on Friday, cementing the show's status as the longest-running animated series in U.S. television history.
"The Simpsons," now in its 25th season, is a staple at Fox television, as its leading family - Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie - have become globally recognized figures of popular culture. The show is also the longest-running sitcom and primetime scripted series in U.S. history.
In a conference call with reporters last month, Executive Producer Al Jean said one of the show's main characters will die in a forthcoming episode. The death is now scheduled for the 26th season.
The 25th season premiered with "Homerland" on Sunday, a spoof of Showtime thriller "Homeland," drawing in 6.4 million viewers according to Fox. The October 6 episode is the annual Halloween-themed "Treehouse of Horror," with a special opening couch gag sequence directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro.
The ABC drama "Lucky 7" has won a dubious derby as the first television show of the new season to be cancelled.
The show is about a group of lottery winners. It'll be replaced on Tuesday night's schedule temporarily by reruns of the network's hit show "Scandal."
"Lucky 7" is a remake of a British series. It even counted Steven Spielberg as one of its executive producers. It focused on seven gas station employees from Queens who struck it rich.
Its premiere was seen by 4.4 million people, the lowest fall premiere ever for an ABC drama. This week's second episode had 2.6 million viewers, a 41 per cent drop.

Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill was released from federal prison Friday and will spend three months under home confinement under terms of her guilty plea to failing to pay taxes.
Hill's attorney, Nathan Hochman, said the former Fugees singer left the prison in Danbury, Conn., on Friday. She was sentenced in July to serve three months in prison.
"Ms. Hill was released today from federal prison after serving her sentence," Hochman said in an email. "She was released several days early based on a number of factors the Bureau of Prisons takes into consideration, including good behavior. She will now start today a one-year period of probation with three months of home confinement during that year."
The South Orange, N.J., resident has said in online postings and at her sentencing that she stopped paying taxes after she dropped out of the music business to protect herself and her children, who now number six. At her June sentencing in federal court in Newark, she compared her experience in the music business to the slavery her ancestors endured.
Making the movie trilogy "The Hobbit" has cost more than half a billion dollars so far, double the amount spent on the three movies in the "The Lord of the Rings" series.
That figure includes the major 266 days of filming with actors that was completed last year, although it doesn't include an additional two months or so of "pick-up" shoots done this year. There will likely also be additional post-production costs as the next two movies are completed.
Through March 31, production had cost 676 million New Zealand dollars, or $561 million at current exchange rates, according to financial documents filed Friday in New Zealand, where the movies are being made.
Distributor Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson may consider it money well spent. To date, only the first movie in the latest trilogy has been released. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" took in just over $1 billion at the box office.

A collection of 81 sculptures of ingenious animated dog Gromit has netted more than 2.3 million pounds ($3.7 million) at a charity auction in England.
The 5-foot (1.52-meter) dogs were on display across the city of Bristol over the summer, and had been decorated by artists and designers including Cath Kidston, Paul Smith and Quentin Blake.
The top lot was Gromit Lightyear - designed by Pixar and based on the "Toy Story" character. It sold for 65,000 pounds ($104,000).
The funds raised from Thursday's sale will go toward the expansion of Bristol Children's Hospital.
A giant squid, one of the largest and most elusive creatures on Earth, was discovered washed up on a beach in the Cantabria community of northern Spain on Tuesday.
According to the Spanish news source El Diario Montanes, this female squid belongs to the species known as Architeuthis dux, measured more than 10 metres in length and tipped the scales at 180 kilograms. Studies have shown that females of this species can grow to an estimated 13 metres in length and be up to 275 kilograms, whereas males likely top out at 10m long and 150 kg.
Shortly after this one was reported, the specimen was moved to the Maritime Museum of Cantabria, in Santander, for study.
Although the giant squid is a prominent feature of myths, legends, and even science fiction, actual sightings of these monstrous cephalopods are very rare. The first account of one apparently goes back to Aristotle, in the 4th century BC, and people have found them washed up on shores over the centuries since. It wasn't until 2002 that the very first photographs of a live specimen were taken, and pictures of one actually seen in its natural habitat were captured in 2004. Actual video footage of a live specimen in its natural habitat had to wait until just 9 months ago, when an international team spotted one over 600 metres below the ocean's surface near Chichi-jima, a small island to the southeast of Japan.
This specimen isn't the largest of its kind found washed up on shore, but unlike most, which are in fairly poor condition - rotted or partially-eaten - this one (other than it being dead) was actually in good condition, according to El Diario Montanes. After determining the poor creature's cause of death, the specimen may simply be preserved, or it may go on public display at the Maritime Museum.

In its latest experiment with live coverage of mundane events, Norway's public broadcasting network plans to dedicate five hours of air-time to an attempt to break the knitting world record.
The NRK network says the Nov. 1 broadcast will be preceded by a four-hour documentary on how the wool off a sheep's back turns into a sweater.
NRK producer Rune Moeklebust said Friday that "it's kind of ordinary TV but very slow, although they'll be knitting as fast as they can."
The Norwegians hope to break the current non-stop knitting record of 4 hours 50 minutes, held by Australia.
The government is shut down. There was a deadly chase in the nation's capital. But the reason Albuquerque Journals are selling out across town has nothing to do with all that seriousness. Fans are clamouring for copies of Friday editions with a fake obit for Walter White.
Placed by "Breaking Bad" fans who said they wanted "closure" after the series finale Sunday, the notice appears on page A4 of Friday's Journal. It's headlined "White, Walter" and includes a photo of Bryan Cranston, the actor who played the chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin on the popular AMC drama filmed in Albuquerque.
The obituary says the 52-year-old "founded a meth manufacturing empire" and he died "after a long battle with lung cancer and a gunshot wound."
Journal Editor Kent Walz says his digital team reports online traffic for is about 40 times that of a typical story, and the library says calls for copies of the paper have been nonstop.
"We decided to publish it, along with the story explaining how it came about and who submitted it," Walz said. "We also felt it should be not be published as part of the regular obituaries, both because it was of a TV character and out of respect for families that had lost loved ones. That explains the location on page A4."

A male was also born but died. Belgrade zoo has a total of 11 white lions, which are extinct in the wild and are found only in zoos and reservations. It is estimated that there are around 500 living in captivity around the world.
