Paul Krugman: Rage of the Privileged (New York Times)
How, then, are things even worse than [Mark Thoma] says? Because many of the rich are selective in their opposition to government helping the unlucky. They're against stuff like food stamps and unemployment benefits; but bailing out Wall Street? Yay!
Jessica Winter: Sympathy for the Devil (Slate)
We have reached a certain unanimity about the middle-aged white men who dominate our small-screen landscape: that Breaking Bad's Walter White is a walking Greek tragedy refitted for the never-ending Great Recession, that Louis C.K. is our existential bard of morality and ethics and how to be good, and that Gordon Ramsay is Satan in a chef's jacket.
David Cantwell: When Tom Smothers Turned Merle Haggard's Most Conservative Song Into an Anti-War Protest (Slate)
Then, the lights come up, and what's revealed isn't alien at all but distressingly familiar. Merle's white-railed porch is surrounded by American flags-as the camera retreats, there are more and more of them until it's as if Merle singing from the middle of a military cemetery. And just like that, a song in part protesting anti-war protesters has been commandeered by the show's set designer into an anti-war protest.
Green Eggs and Ham is one of Dr. Seuss's "Beginner Books", written with a very simple vocabulary for beginning readers. How many different words form the vocabulary of this book?
Nancy is an American daily and Sunday comic strip, originally written and drawn by Ernie Bushmiller and distributed by United Feature Syndicate. The character of Nancy, a slightly chubby and precocious eight-year-old, first appeared in the strip Fritzi Ritz about the airheaded flapper title character. Larry Whittington began Fritzi Ritz in 1922, and it was taken over by Bushmiller three years later.
On January 2, 1933, Bushmiller introduced Fritzi's niece, Nancy. Soon she dominated the daily strip, which was retitled Nancy in 1938.

Lois of Oregon was first, and correct, with:
I remember not reading "Nancy", the comic strip about the
fat girl with the really unfortunate afro and her creepy
boyfriend named after a garden pest. It was the only comic
strip that was less creepy than "Henry", which featured a
thing that looked like Popeye's afterbirth, shown here
thrusting his proboscis down some poor child's esophagus to
deposit his eggs.

The Emmy-award winning series "Breaking Bad" is set to air its last show Sunday and the city where it was filmed is preparing for the end.
Albuquerque will celebrate the AMC series finale with watch parties and red carpet casting events in a city still benefiting from a tourism boost due to the drama's popularity.
Tourism officials say despite the show's dark themes of drug trafficking and violence, "Breaking Bad" highlighted areas around the city and gave viewers a sense of Albuquerque.
Albuquerque businesses also have taken advantage by selling "Breaking Bad" theme products like "blue meth" candy and character-related clothing.

Robin Williams has early bragging rights over Michael J. Fox in the competition between two sitcom veterans returning to network TV - with an asterisk.
The Nielsen company said Friday that Williams' new CBS comedy, "The Crazy Ones," debuted before 15.6 million people on Thursday night. It competed directly at 9 p.m. Eastern with "The Michael J. Fox" on NBC, which was seen by 7.2 million people.
Williams, who plays an advertising executive working in a firm with his daughter, had a huge advantage. His new sitcom directly followed a new episode of television's most popular comedy, "The Big Bang Theory," which was seen by 19.5 million people in the second of a two-part season premiere.
By contrast, the second half hour of "Parks & Recreation" on NBC, which preceded Fox's new show, had less than 3 million viewers.
Jimmy Kimmel and Kanye West either are engaged in a bitter feud or a wild parody of one.
A skit poking fun at West on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Tuesday provoked an irate call from the rapper about an hour and half before Thursday's show, Kimmel said in his monologue.
"He is very angry because of a bit we aired this week," Kimmel said, in which a child re-enacted an interview that West gave to Britain's BBC. It was "pretty innocuous," the late-night host said.
But West ordered him to make a public apology and said Kimmel's life would be "much better" if he did so, Kimmel said, adding that West also called himself the most powerful voice in media.
Then came more than a half-dozen tweets posted on West's official Twitter site. One called Kimmel out of line for spoofing what West called "the first piece of honest media in years," and another referred to photographers trying to get shots of West's baby daughter with Kim Kardashian.

A theater manager says a stuffed armadillo that was stolen from Willie Nelson's band after a show in suburban New York has been returned unharmed.
He says the band isn't pressing charges.
The toy critter, known to the band as Ol' Dillo, disappeared after a Sept. 19 concert at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. Bailey says the armadillo was a treasured possession of Nelson's monitor engineer, Aaron Foye.
Video shows a woman snatching it away. General manager Tom Bailey says a different woman brought the armadillo to the box office Friday in a sealed box. She did not identify herself.
Atari's 1981 hit Centipede is an antique in the video game world, but it's the hottest new thing in the casino industry.
Slot machine manufacturers are rolling out a raft of games inspired by the penny arcade, hoping to attract middle-aged gamblers with a dose of nostalgia and the promise of finally cashing in on all those hours spent in front of a screen.
A Centipede slot machine to hit casino floors soon is more than just a clever licensing deal, or a sign of gambling's cosmetic change from one-armed bandits to touch screens and digital music. It's part of a new generation of models that let users show off a rare casino trait: skill.
The game, developed by International Game Technology, the industry's largest slot manufacturer, converts points earned shooting digital insects directly into money. If two gamblers sit down at an identical machine, the better shot will walk away with more cash.
Skill will still only take you so far even with the new brand of slots. The flashing, singing machines - sometimes called "beautiful vaults" because they are the most profitable game a casino can put on its floor - are only marketable if they can retain a consistent portion of wagers, usually somewhere between 5 percent and 20 percent.

Serbia's government banned gay activists from marching in Belgrade for the third year running on Friday, citing a threat to public safety from right-wing hooligans but risking EU condemnation before the expected start of accession talks.
The last Gay Pride march in 2010 triggered a day of rioting by right-wing nationalists in the capital, Belgrade.
Western ambassadors had heaped pressure on Serbia to allow this year's event to go ahead on Saturday, as a litmus test of the Balkan country's commitment to tolerance and diversity. The EU is due to launch membership talks in January.
But after a three-hour meeting of government leaders and security chiefs, Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said it would not be allowed to proceed.
The world's longest-running cartoon is to go fully digital, its Japanese broadcaster said Friday, abandoning hand-drawn celluloid-based animation after a run of 44 years.
Fuji Television Network said episodes of "Sazae-san" aired from October would be produced entirely digitally. The move will mean there are no hand-drawn cartoons left on Japanese television, according to the Association of Japanese Animations.
Until the 1990s many cartoons were created by artists working directly on celluloid, a painstaking process that meant characters had to be drawn in many different postures to give them impression of movement as the camera was repeatedly started and stopped.
"Sazae-san", which first aired in 1969, revolves around the life of the Mrs Sazae of the title, a cheerful but klutzy full-time housewife who lives with her parents, husband, son, brother and sister.
The 30-minute episodes, which can readily garner more than one-in-seven Sunday evening viewers, tend to focus on tiny incidents in the family's everyday life and are dotted with seasonal festivals.

The first U.S. version of the 40-foot-tall rubber duckie that's made a splash in harbors from Hong Kong to Sao Paulo since 2007 will appear in Pittsburgh on Friday.
Each city builds its own duck from the plans of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, and the whole project includes massive pontoons, crews to inflate and deflate the duck, and in this case, alerting organizations such as the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Mariners were alerted to the duck's impending presence, Coast Guard Lt. JG Devin Adams said, because the shipping channel of the Ohio River is one of the nation's busiest commercial waterways, including huge barges carrying coal and other materials.
The duck's arrival Friday will kick off the monthlong Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, which features theater, dance, music and visual arts from around the world. The duck will be moored downtown until late October.
The project began when Paul Organisak of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust saw pictures of other duck events and sought Hofman's approval for the first U.S. duckie. But even after agreement was reached, Organisak was in for some surprises about its creation.
