Isaac Cabe, John Feal: 5 Things I Saw as a 9/11 First Responder (Cracked)
Hey guys, let's lighten the mood and talk about 9/11 for a moment. Incredibly, it's been long enough that people who are now entering their 20s were first-graders the morning the news hit. Remember those original confused reports saying there'd been some kind of freak accident that caused an airliner to crash into the World Trade Center? Then the second plane hit and, well, you've seen the clips enough you can play them in your memory.

Martha Jane Canary or Cannary (May 1, 1852 - August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman and professional scout, known for her claim of being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok and for fighting Indians. She is said to have also exhibited kindness and compassion, especially to the sick and needy. This contrast helped to make her a famous frontier figure.

Calamity Jane
I'm ashamed I didn't get the Bartcop answer yesterday, I remeber it now, but there is an Edward Herman Reader of that name, and also a documentary.

Ooooh I know THIS one, Marty:
Calamity Jane.
I live in South Dakota - where we have the Black Hills, where Wild Bill Hickok
and Calamity Jane are buried side-by-side.
That's Calamity Jane standing in front of Wild Bill's grave at Mount Moriah Cemetary in Deadwood, South Dakota.
(She outlived Bill by about 27 years)
She was one tough old broad and remains a legend.
Damn...
I should've known that one.
Bartcop and my birthday's were only six days apart

Calamity Jane ~ An American frontierswoman and professional scout, known for her claim of being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok and for fighting Indians. According to an article in infobarrel 'Calamity' was a Victorian euphemism for gonorrhoea. There were no heroics involved in her getting the "calamity", just a young woman's unfortunate need to earn a living in a hard land.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

Dozens of reserve soldiers from an elite Israeli intelligence unit publicly declared Friday that they refuse to operate in the Palestinian territories, citing moral reasons.
Soldiers from Unit 8200 - Israel's equivalent of the eavesdropping, code-breaking U.S. National Security Agency - aired their grievances in the Yediot Ahronot daily after sending a letter to the military chief of staff and the prime minister.
The 43 soldiers, including some officers, allege that some of their unit's intelligence work prevents Palestinians from leading "normal lives" and only serves to prolong the conflict.
The soldiers emphasized that their refusal to serve applies to Palestinian areas only.
Soldiers have refused to operate in the Palestinian territories in the past, citing similar reasons. But this is the first time a large group from this elite unit has done so.
The Prada Marfa stands out, but not like the Italian luxury brand's stores in the world's major fashion capitals: It's surrounded by desolate prairie, alone in a plot of dirt along a rural highway in the West Texas desert.
The art installation has become a must-see for curious tourists since it was erected nine years ago along Highway 90, about 40 miles from the small artsy town of Marfa. Scandinavian artists Elmgreen & Dragset wanted the mock-up store, the size of shack but with Prada shoes and bags inside, to be a critique of the luxury goods industry.
But it was threatened when it was deemed an illegal roadside advertisement.
After nearly a year of negotiations, the Texas Department of Transportation tells The Associated Press that it has reached an agreement that will save the Prada Marfa by classifying it as a museum.
The installation - a sealed store with samples of shoes and handbags that appeared to be worth thousands of dollars - came in the state agency's crosshairs after a local resident filed a complaint about Playboy magazine installing a 40-foot-tall neon bunny along the same roadway.

When his family business was closing after nearly four centuries of making sake and other spirits, Ichiro Akuto swooped to rescue the doomed distillery's whisky stock and went out on his own.
A little over a decade later, the 10-person operation is on a roll with its Ichiro's Malt scooping up praise from a rapidly growing fan base in Japan and overseas.
"Some of that whisky had been maturing for 20 years... and it felt like leaving my children behind," said the 49-year-old Akuto. "So I decided to take all that whisky with me and start a new business."
Soaring demand for whiskies made in a country long associated with sake has catapulted Japan into the ranks of the world's whisky heavyweights -- Scotland, Ireland, the United States and Canada -- despite having fewer than 10 distilleries, about a tenth of the number in Scotland.
Commercial production has been around in Japan since the 1920's after a student who learned the art of whisky making in Scotland helped start the Yamazaki distillery near Kyoto.
In 2007, when the Charles Koch Foundation considered giving millions of dollars to Florida State University's economics department, the offer came with strings attached.
First, the curriculum it funded must align with the libertarian, deregulatory economic philosophy of Charles Koch, the billionaire industrialist and Republican political bankroller.
Second, the Charles Koch Foundation would at least partially control which faculty members Florida State University hired.
And third, Bruce Benson, a prominent libertarian economic theorist and Florida State University economics department chairman, must stay on another three years as department chairman - even though he told his wife he'd step down in 2009 after one three-year term.

Yahoo's free email service could have cost the company an extra quarter of a million dollars a day.
The government called for the huge fine in 2008 if Yahoo didn't go along with an expansion of U.S. surveillance by surrendering online information, a step the company regarded as unconstitutional. At stake, according to the government, was the nation's security.
"International terrorists, and (redacted) in particular, use Yahoo to communicate over the Internet," the director of national intelligence at the time, Mike McConnell, said in a court document supporting the government's position. "Any further delay in Yahoo's compliance could cause great harm to the United States, as vital foreign intelligence information contained in communications to which only Yahoo has access, will go uncollected."
The outlines of Yahoo's secret and ultimately unsuccessful court fight against government surveillance emerged when a federal judge ordered the unsealing of some material about Yahoo's court challenge. Sections of some of the documents were redacted, such as the names of the terrorists McConnell cited.
Late last month Yelena Tumanova was handed the body of her son in a coffin at her home in Russia's Western Volga region. Anton Tumanov was 20 and a soldier serving in the Russian army in the North Caucasus region of Chechnya.
The documents Yelena Tumanova was given with the body raised more questions than they answered - questions about how her son died and about the Russian government's denials that its troops are in Ukraine. The records do not show Anton Tumanov's place of death, said human rights activists who spoke to his mother after she got in touch with them.
"Medical documents said there were shrapnel wounds, that is he died from a loss of blood, but how it happened and where were not indicated," said Sergei Krivenko, who heads a commission on military affairs on Russia's presidential human rights council.
Rolan, 23, a fellow soldier who served with Tumanov, told Reuters that his comrade died on the operating table after he was hit by shrapnel from rockets. Rolan said he was steps away in an armored personnel carrier when the rockets struck. He said two in his group died, including another soldier, named Robert.
The fact that Russian soldiers have died in a war in which they officially have no involvement is a problem in Russia. Chatter about young soldiers returning home in coffins has begun to spread over the past few weeks. Though still limited, such talk has powerful echoes of earlier Russian wars such as Chechnya and Afghanistan.

Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford said Friday that he is calling off his engagement to Maria Belen Chapur because of the ongoing contention with his ex-wife, Jenny, four years after their divorce.
Sanford, then governor of South Carolina, famously disappeared from the state for five days in 2009, telling aides he was out hiking the Appalachian Trail. He returned to the state and at a tearful news conference confessed he was in Argentina and had been having an affair with Chapur.
Jenny Sanford, who has four children with Sanford, soon sued for divorce, which was granted in 2010.
Later, Sanford and Chapur - whom he once called his "soul mate" - became engaged. But Sanford, in a rambling message posted on his Facebook page Friday, said that he and Chapur are ending their engagement.
An endearing gesture by former Gov. Arnold $chwarzenegger to include an image of his wife Maria Shriver in his official portrait has been covered with a splotch of blue paint.
Former $chwarzenegger aide Clay Russell said Friday that the official portrait of the two-term governor once featured a lapel button showing Shriver's face.
The realist-style painting by Austrian Gottfried Helnwein was finished during $chwarzenegger's first term in office then sat on an easel in $chwarzenegger's Oak Productions office in Santa Monica. He paid for the portrait himself at an undisclosed cost.
True to his outsized life, $chwarzenegger's portrait is larger than those of other modern-day governors. It measures roughly 4.5 feet wide and 6.3 feet tall and will eventually hang on the third floor of the state Capitol.
It features an image of a youthful $chwarzenegger - a onetime bodybuilder - standing in front of the official California seal.
