Luis Prada: 4 Public Apologies That Weren't Good Enough (Cracked)
This is an age in which people can screw up on a large scale, then issue an apology through their press agent and quickly fade back into neutral in the eyes of the public. A simple "I'm sorry" lets them slip out of our minds, and even though we may not necessarily forgive them, their apology allows us to stop caring and move on. For some of those people, sure: continue to live your life of assholeary. But there are others whose apologies we shouldn't accept -- people whose sorries aren't good enough. We should generally be forgiving of our fellow humans, but not when it comes to ...
Nash Bridges is an American television police drama created by Carlton Cuse. The show starred Don Johnson and Cheech Marin as two Inspectors with the San Francisco Police Department's Special Investigations Unit. The show ran for six seasons on CBS from March 29, 1996 to May 4, 2001 with a total of 122 episodes being produced.
The first script was written by neighbors Don Johnson and Hunter S. Thompson as a TV movie about a drug-addicted cop, Nash, who dated a known mobster's daughter, and his Latino partner. Thompson appears as a piano player in the pilot.

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
Hunter S. Thompson
Nothing strange about a police show written by Thompson, and starring Cheech Marin, no.....

Deborah replied:
I was going to take the day off, but as a fan of Don Johnson (watch his early work, "A Boy and His Dog") my curiosity won.
I watched this show and did not know that Hunter S. Thompson was not only Johnson's neighbor, he also co-wrote the first episode.
Happy weekend, all!
Adam answered:
Hunter S. Thompson. Huh, who'd have thought...

I beg to differ…I wasn't absent from class yesterday!
Hunter S. Thompson…I have mixed feelings for the good Dr…..My several contacts with him were abysmal….Must have been false drugs….He was a mumbling shit faced anus….Loved his bloviated writing…..I viewed Nash Bridges occasionally because of its SF and the babes. Always was nourished by Bukowski's fuel.

That's right: Mr. Fear and Loathing himself...
Do you know what the 'S' stands for?
It stands for 'son-of-a-BITCH this guy can write!'
Sure, everyone's read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
But the one that REALLY earned Thompson the term "gonzo journalist" was his 'Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72'
Seriously - you read that one and at then end of a chapter when you finally let your breath out in a great big WHOOSH - you realize you've been holding your breath for the past several pages! Except, of course, when you're laughing your ass off...

Actor Bill Murray, right, sings to the crowd as producer Ivan Reitman holds a microphone following a screening of the original "Ghostbusters" film during the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014. The Toronto Film Festival has turned its second day into a very welcome new holiday: "Bill Murray Day," where three of Murray's classics, "Stripes," ''Groundhog Day" and "Ghostbusters," were to screen ahead of the premiere of Murray's latest, the next-door-neighbor comedy "St. Vincent."

Some of the world's largest tech firms are planning a "go slow" day next week in protest of proposals that could create fast lanes on the internet for some companies.
On 10 September, tech firms including Etsy, FourSquare, KickStarter, Mozilla, Reddit and Vimeo will install a widget on their sites to show how they believe the internet would look if the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) overturns "net neutrality" rules.
The FCC is currently redrawing its rules after a series of legal challenges from cable and telecoms companies undermined its authority to regulate the internet. One proposal could allow internet service providers to offer fast lanes to higher paying customers, a move critics charge would break net neutrality - the principle that all traffic is treated equally online.
Evan Greer, co-founder of Fight for the Future, a pressure group helping to organise the protest day, said in an email: "Net neutrality is tough to explain to people, so we wanted to organize an action that actually shows the world what's at stake. I think the three most hated words on the internet right now are 'Please wait, loading ... ' Unless internet users unite in defense of net neutrality, we could be seeing those dreaded 'loading' wheels a lot more often on some of our favorite websites, while monopolistic companies get to decide which content gets seen by the most people."
Several other large internet companies are expected to back the day of action, which is being coordinated by Silicon Valley lobby group Engine. Engine will direct people to call or email policymakers with their concerns.

In the annals of Simpsons celebrity guest stars, Thomas Pynchon isn't in the same league of fame as Paul McCartney or Meryl Streep. But nobody (not even you, Comic Book Guy!) must ever doubt the celebrated author's devotion to a certain bald, obese nuclear technician.
The National Book Award-winning writer, who has appeared in three episodes of the long-running Fox comedy, insisted that the writers on one of his episodes remove a line in which Pynchon's character says, "Marge is a great cook. No wonder Homer is such a fat-ass."
Producer Matt Selman recently shared Pynchon's notes on Twitter; it wasn't that Pynchon took offense to the salty language, but rather, according to Selman, he couldn't in good conscience rip on his hero.
On faxed notes to the Simpsons staff, Pynchon wrote, "Sorry, guys. Homer is my role model and I won't speak ill of him."
Garrison Keillor, host of public radio's popular "A Prairie Home Companion," says he's cancelling an upcoming show to undergo a medical procedure.
Keillor didn't specify the procedure but says: "I now know more about the prostate than I ever wanted to."
The 72-year-old humorist and bestselling author says the procedure is set for Sept. 25, so he's cancelling a Sept. 27 show at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. But he says the season opener, street dance and meatloaf supper is still set for Sept. 20.
In his signature dry humour, Keillor released a statement saying he's found an excellent surgeon, and is looking forward to "thinking more about truth and beauty and less about plumbing."

Up for whatever? For some in the tiny and tony Colorado resort town of Crested Butte that would be a no.
They aren't too thrilled with a virtual takeover by Anheuser-Busch this weekend to film an over-the-top commercial for Bud Light beer and its "Up for Whatever" ad campaign.
Some didn't take too kindly to the secretive event, arranged between Anheuser-Busch and town leaders. Others embraced it.
The beer giant agreed to pay $500,000 to Crested Butte to paint several blocks of a central street blue. Dozens of workers installed a sand volleyball court, a multistory cowboy boot statue, a gorilla and a director's chair that comfortably seats six people. Some 1,000 revelers were to be flown in for the event - and outsiders were banned for the duration.
And for two days, Crested Butte was becoming Whatever, USA. All painted in "Bud Light Blue."
Despite being one of the poorest nations in the world, Afghanistan may be sitting on one of the richest troves of minerals in the world, valued at nearly $1 trillion, according to U.S. scientists.
Afghanistan, a country nearly the size of Texas, is loaded with minerals deposited by the violent collision of the Indian subcontinent with Asia. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began inspecting what mineral resources Afghanistan had after U.S.-led forces drove the Taliban from power in the country in 2004. As it turns out, the Afghanistan Geological Survey staff had kept Soviet geological maps and reports up to 50 years old or more that hinted at a geological gold mine.
In 2006, U.S. researchers flew airborne missions to conduct magnetic, gravity and hyperspectral surveys over Afghanistan. The magnetic surveys probed for iron-bearing minerals up to 6 miles (10 kilometers) below the surface, while the gravity surveys tried to identify sediment-filled basins potentially rich in oil and gas. The hyperspectral survey looked at the spectrum of light reflected off rocks to identify the light signatures unique to each mineral. More than 70 percent of the country was mapped in just two months.
The surveys verified all the major Soviet finds. Afghanistan may hold 60 million tons of copper, 2.2 billion tons of iron ore, 1.4 million tons of rare earth elements such as lanthanum, cerium and neodymium, and lodes of aluminum, gold, silver, zinc, mercury and lithium. For instance, the Khanneshin carbonatite deposit in Afghanistan's Helmand province is valued at $89 billion, full as it is with rare earth elements.

A landscape by Claude Monet has been found in a suitcase the late German collector Cornelius Gurlitt had with him during a hospital stay, the latest piece to emerge from his long-hidden art trove.
The suitcase was left at the hospital for unknown reasons, and was handed over earlier this week to the court-appointed administrator of Gurlitt's estate, the task force investigating the pieces' origin said Friday.
The latest find comes after officials in July reported finding a few more works at Gurlitt's Munich apartment, including a sculpture apparently by Edgar Degas.
Like the Monet, they weren't among 1,280 pieces authorities seized from the apartment in 2012 while investigating a tax case, a collection that included works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. It wasn't immediately clear where the Monet was kept and why it wasn't seized.

More Jews have left France for Israel so far this year than from any other country, a leading Jewish group said on Friday, blaming a "climate of anti-Semitism."
"France is today the leading country for Jewish emigration to Israel. It has never been before," said Ariel Kandel, head of the French office of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
Kandel cited figures from the Israeli integration minister showing that, as of August 31, 4,566 Jews had left France for Israel this year.
This was ahead of Ukraine (3,252), Russia (2,632) and the United States (2,218).

The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when its owners rushed him to a northwest Portland emergency animal hospital.
X-rays showed a stomach full of "a large quantity of foreign material." Nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer - the dog had consumed 43 ½ socks.
DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital spokeswoman Shawna Harch said it's perhaps the strangest case in the hospital's history, The Oregonian reported.
So strange that the hospital entered last February's tale, complete with X-rays, in an annual contest sponsored by the vet magazine, Veterinary Practice News, and won a prize. Fittingly enough, the contest is called "They Ate WHAT?"

Veteran TV political correspondent Bruce Morton, who covered the Vietnam War and the United States' space program, died Friday in Washington, D.C., at age 83.
Morton spent 29 years at CBS, winning six Emmy Awards. He reported on the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and covered the unrest in China's Tiananmen Square in 1989.
He covered the presidential campaigns of Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey. He was a key figure on the CBS News convention and election night teams, and in 1988, a presidential election year, his 146 appearances on CBS News television programs were the most for any TV news personality that year.
Morton joined CBS News as a reporter in the Washington bureau in 1964 and was elevated to correspondent in 1966. He left CBS to join CNN in 1993. He retired in 2006.
He was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, and grew up in Chicago. He got his start in the news business while still a student at Harvard College, doing radio newscasts for Boston's WORL.
