Cody: 7 Important Details Nobody Mentions About Ferguson (Cracked)
On August 9, 2014, an unarmed black youth named Michael Brown was killed by a white police officer named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, after some kind of physical altercation between the two. Several eyewitnesses claim that Brown put his hands above his head in surrender and pleaded with Wilson to not shoot him, which Wilson did. This event led to protests in the streets, and things got worse from there. It became a convoluted mess of misinformation, no information, and some actual information, so here is every important truth and lie that you need to know to understand the situation.

Ayam Cemani is a rarely kept breed of chicken originating in Indonesia.
Ayam means "chicken" in Indonesian and Cemani is "completely black" in Javanese.
The birds are completely black: black plumage with a greenish shine, black legs and toe nails, black beak and tongue, black comb and wattles, black meat and bones and even dark organs.

Apparently it's a blue-black Indonesian chicken that isn't very popular; IOW, accordingly to the great Googly-moogly, it's rarely kept.
I thought chickens were chickens, and only their feather colors or combs were different. Having never raised chickens, I have no idea.

The GOP has a problem with women, and women have a problem with the GOP, according to a report commissioned by conservative groups and obtained by Politico.
The GOP is "stuck in the past," "lacking compassion," and "intolerant," said the report, which was presented to senior Republican aides in early August. Super PAC Crossroads GPS and issue advocacy group American Action Network conducted the survey of 800 registered women voters across the country. Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff during the George W. Bush administration, backs Crossroads GPS.
According to the report, 49 percent of women polled hold an unfavorable view of Republicans, whereas 39 percent think unfavorably of Democrats.
In the poll, women suggested that conservatives consider policies that "are not easily framed as driven by a desire to aid employers or 'the rich.' " However, married women without college degrees who were polled prefer Republicans to Democrats 48 percent to 38 percent. This year, single women are the most important voting demographic.
Chelsea Clinton said Friday she is quitting her job as a reporter at NBC News, citing increased work at the Clinton Foundation and the imminent birth of her first child.
Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton's daughter had been working at the network since 2011, sporadically doing feature stories on people or organizations doing public-spirited work. Politico magazine reported earlier this year that NBC was paying her $600,000 a year.
She was initially hired to do stories for Brian Williams' "Rock Center" newsmagazine, but that program was canceled. Her work occasionally appeared on NBC's "Nightly News."
Her exit removes some potential awkwardness for the network if her mother runs for president in 2016. NBC made certain to keep Clinton off the air around the time her mother was making media appearances to promote a book, to avoid any appearance of conflict. NBC also received some criticism when stories about her salary appeared; the network didn't comment on the reports.

Grammy-winning R&B singer and former "The Voice" judge CeeLo Green pleaded no contest on Friday to giving a woman the drug ecstasy in 2012.
Green, 39, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, was charged last year by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office with one count of furnishing a controlled substance.
He was sentenced to three years of formal probation by Superior Court Judge Mark Young and ordered to complete 52 Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings as well as 360 hours of community service.
According to prosecutors last year, Green "slipped" ecstasy to a 33-year-old woman while the two were dining at a Los Angeles restaurant in 2012. Green pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of giving ecstasy to the woman without her knowledge.
A moratorium on U.S. adult sex film productions was lifted on Friday after just 24 hours when a performer's initial HIV test result proved to be a false positive, according to the industry trade group that called for the suspension.
The moratorium marked at least the third consecutive summer that the porn industry has voluntarily shut down productions under its health-screening system because of performers who tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease.
But the latest episode was by far the shortest, coming to an end a day after it began as re-testing of two blood samples from the performer in question, and testing of other actors with whom the individual had recently worked, came back negative, the group said.
Because false positives are relatively rare with the type of screening the group conducts, its policy is to immediately halt shooting even before exposure to the AIDS virus is confirmed.

Broke and down on his luck, Billy Joe Hurley turned to the only way he knew how to make a living: poaching ginseng.
But after his latest in a long string of arrests, federal prosecutors had enough.
They told a U.S. magistrate Thursday that poaching by Hurley and others in the national forests in western North Carolina has dramatically reduced the numbers of wild ginseng - a humble looking plant whose roots can fetch more than $900 a pound.
Hurley, 46, of Bryson City, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5½ months in jail - the fifth time in a decade that Hurley has been sentenced for illegal possession or harvesting of ginseng. He could have received up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Hurley's legal troubles illustrate a larger problem: As prices continue to skyrocket, more people are traipsing through national forests, state parks and even private property to hunt ginseng, leaving the plant's survival in doubt.

A change in Germany's capital gains tax has prompted an exodus from its Catholic and Protestant churches this year as thousands of registered members quit their parishes rather than pay the money.
Dioceses in both churches have reported in recent weeks that the number of members deserting them has jumped compared to last year, often by 50 percent or more, as banks prepare to withdraw church tax at source for capital gains from January 1.
German tax authorities collect an 8 or 9 percent premium on churchgoers' annual tax bills and channel it to the faiths to pay clergy salaries, charity services and other expenses. Members must officially leave the church to avoid paying this.
Churchgoers are supposed to pay church tax on all their income, but many have apparently only declared their salaries. Since church tax is voluntary, the state tax authorities do not punish anyone who fails to declare additional income.

Earlier, numerous websites reported that Hello Kitty is not a cat. That's not only an oversimplification, it's also not quite true. Hello Kitty is a feline--just an anthropomorphic one, Sanrio told Kotaku.
The whole Hello-Kitty-is-not-a-cat thing was set off by an L.A. Times article on an upcoming Hello Kitty at the
Japanese American National Museum. According to Christine R. Yano, an
anthropologist at the University of Hawaii, prepared a written text for the
exhibit. According to Yano:
I was corrected -
very firmly. That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show.
Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She
is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She
walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own,
however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty.
Of course, Hello
Kitty is a character that has come to represent Japanese cute, but isn't the
point of personification giving animals human characteristics? I mean, do we
really need to point out things like real crickets don't have top hats and
umbrellas like Jiminy Cricket?
Even without all this, when talking with Sanrio earlier today, I pointed out that most Japanese
people would understand Hello Kitty as a cat character (Yes, I also believe
anyone in any country would understand that). But nobody would mistake her for
an actual cat. Just like nobody would mistake the countless characters from
American cartoons as actual animals, or the numerous anthropomorphized animals
from fables and folklore. That is what makes
the fact this "Hello-Kitty-is-not-a-cat" notion became a story and then went
viral so darn surprising. There are literally thousands of years of animal
personifications. Certainly, people understand that Mickey Mouse is not a real
mouse, just like they understand that Hello Kitty is not real cat. They don't
need to be real. They're characters. And as their names denote, Mickey is a
mouse, and Kitty is, well, a cat.

Israel isn't particularly famous for its wine today, but four thousand years ago, during the Bronze Age, vineyards in the region produced vintages that were prized throughout the Mediterranean and imported by the Egyptian elite.
Last summer, archaeologists discovered a rare time capsule of this ancient drinking culture: the world's oldest known wine cellar, found in the ruins of a sprawling palatial compound in Upper Galilee.
The mud-brick walls of the room seem to have crumbled suddenly, perhaps during an earthquake. Whatever happened, no one came to salvage the 40 wine jars inside after the collapse; luckily for archaeologists, the cellar was left untouched for centuries.
Excavators at the site took samples of the residue inside the jars. In a new study published today (Aug. 27) in the journal PLOS ONE, the researchers describe what their chemical analysis turned up: biomarkers of wine and herbal additives that were mixed into the drink, including mint, cinnamon and juniper.
