Tom Danehy: Tom remembers Dave Sitton, a man who was too nice for local Republicans (Tucson Weekly)
When Dave Sitton made a run at the GOP nomination for the June 2012 special election to fill out the rest of Gabrielle Giffords' term in the House of Representatives, he had the backing of several big-time Republicans in this town. However, when pressed, they all had the same lament when it came to his chances-he was just too nice a guy.
Paul Krugman: Karl Rive Shouldn't Pretend He Understands Health Policy (New York Times)
Now comes Rove, and his big idea is to make the tax break on health coverage available to everyone, not just beneficiaries of employer plans. Great! Now employers can say "Here, we'll eliminate your coverage, but we'll pay you more, and you can use the money to buy tax-deductible insurance on your own!" Except that employees with preexisting conditions won't find insurers willing to offer them affordable coverage - oh, and lower-paid workers won't be able to afford coverage even if they're healthy.
Sturgeon's Law (Wikipedia)
Sturgeon's revelation, commonly referred to as Sturgeon's law, is an adage commonly cited as "ninety percent of everything is crap." It is derived from quotations by Theodore Sturgeon, an American science fiction author and critic: while Sturgeon coined another adage that he termed "Sturgeon's law", it is his "revelation" that is usually referred to by that term.
Towering Spider Sculpture Reflects a Mother's Strength (My Modern Met)
Maman is an incredible, intimidating sculpture resembling a giant spider by the late French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois (aka Spiderwoman). The towering structure, whose title translates as Mother in French, is an homage to the artist's own mother who passed away when she was 21 years old.
The "Mr. Do Bee" (and "Mr. Don't Bee") characters were used to help pre-school children learn the differences between right and wrong. The viewers were encouraged to show proper behavior by learning the mantra: "Do Be a 'Do-Bee'. Don't Be a 'Don't-Bee'!"

Wow, this one opened an old wound! The memory slices through my brain like a rusty razor blade. ROMPER ROOM! Miss Mary Ann and her demonic mirror that allowed HER to WATCH ME

I was a bit too old for this show, but I do remember that it was a fav with young mothers - back when mom's stayed home all day - and did not homestead. (I.e., pre, pre schools.)
PS: When talking about the article in slate magazine yesterday, I failed to include the disclaimer that I was referring to minor aches and pains (AWA 'check-ups' when feeling fine), but not major symptoms such as strokes, etc.
Deep down, I think we all KNOW when we are sick. Then there are the hypochondriacs to whom I was mainly referring.

Britain's Guardian newspaper said Friday it is teaming up with the New York Times to work on documents obtained by fugitive US security employee Edward Snowden because of "intense pressure" from the British government.
It comes after the partner of the Guardian reporter working on the story was detained by British police under anti-terror laws and the Guardian said it was forced by the British government to destroy some of its Snowden computer files.
The newspaper said on its website that the deal would give the US paper access to some of the "sensitive cache of documents" leaked by Snowden, a former US National Security Agency (NSA) employee.
"In a climate of intense pressure from the UK government, the Guardian decided to bring in a US partner to work on the GCHQ documents provided by Edward Snowden," the Guardian said in a statement.

NBC News says it will rebroadcast a 1963 "Meet the Press" interview with Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of the March on Washington's 50th anniversary next week.
King appeared on the news program three days before his landmark "I Have a Dream" speech at the Aug. 28, 1963, civil rights march.
"'Meet the Press' Special Edition: Remembering the Dream" will air Sunday on 10 NBC-owned stations and on New England Cable News and a number of NBC affiliates. Most stations will air it immediately before or after the regularly scheduled episode of "Meet the Press" (check local listings).
The half-hour interview with King and NAACP leader Roy Wilkins will air in full, a half-century to the day after its original showing. It will be available online afterward.
Grammy Award-winning artist Linda Ronstadt has revealed that a recent Parkinson's diagnosis has rendered her unable to sing.
In an interview with the AARP, the 67-year-old says that she was officially diagnosed with the degenerative disorder eight months ago after displaying symptoms as far back as eight years ago.
"I couldn't sing," she told AARP music reporter Alanna Nash, "and I couldn't figure out why. I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had. And it didn't occur to me to go to a neurologist."
Ronstadt says that she had undergone a shoulder operation, and she believed that to be the culprit for her trembling hands.
"Parkinson's is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, 'Oh, you have Parkinson's disease,' I was completely shocked," she said. "I wouldn't have suspected that in a million, billion years."

ESPN ended its collaboration with PBS on an investigation of the NFL and players' head injuries as public TV producers expressed surprise over the abrupt collapse of the 15-month partnership.
ESPN said its decision was based on a lack of editorial control over "League of Denial: The NFL's Concussion Crisis," airing in October on PBS' "Frontline" public affairs series. At ESPN's request, its logo was being removed from websites related to the project and from the film itself.
It was a mistake on ESPN's part that it didn't reach the conclusion sooner, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said Friday.
The NFL on Friday denied a New York Times report that it had pressured ESPN to drop out of the project with "Frontline." The sports network has a lucrative contract to carry league games on "Monday Night Football."
Adult film sets throughout the Los Angeles area have shut down indefinitely after a porn actress tested positive for HIV, the trade association for the industry said on Thursday.
The actress, who works under the name Cameron Bay, has contracted the virus that causes AIDS, the Free Speech Coalition said in a press release.
The trade group said film producers called a moratorium on production late on Wednesday and that filming would not resume until all of Bay's partners are notified and tested.
The multibillion-dollar adult film industry is centered in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
The estate of pop music legend Michael Jackson owes $702 million in federal taxes and penalties, the Internal Revenue Service charged in U.S. Tax Court, accusing the estate of undervaluing some of the star's assets by hundreds of millions of dollars.
The dollar amounts in dispute had not been previously disclosed in the court challenge that the Jackson estate filed in July to a bill from the IRS, the U.S. tax-collecting agency.
At issue is the wide difference between what the estate said Jackson's legacy was worth versus what the IRS determined was its taxable value.
The largest taxable item was the estate's stake in some of Jackson's recording assets, listed as MJ/ATV Publishing Trust interest in New Horizon Trust II, which was valued at $469 million by IRS. It was not valued in the 2009 estate filing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree banning demonstrations and rallies for two and a half months in Sochi around the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the official government newspaper, published the presidential decree Friday, listing an array of measures tightening security in the Olympic host city, including the ban on public assemblies. All "gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, marches and pickets" that are not part of the Olympics or the Paralympics will be prohibited in Sochi from Jan. 7 to March 21, the decree said.
The Winter Olympics is taking place Feb. 7-23 in the Black Sea resort, and the Paralympics are being held March 7-16.
Government-imposed protest bans across entire cities where Olympics are held are unusual. Putin's decree could be aimed at heading off demonstrations against Russia's ban on alleged gay propaganda, a new law that has been sharply criticized in the West.
Among other measures in the decree are restrictions on vehicles entering Sochi. Only cars with local license plates, emergency vehicles and those accredited by the Olympic organizers will be allowed to enter the host city between Jan. 7 and March 21.
Time Warner Cable Inc is offering free antennas to help customers watch CBS via broadcast signals during a blackout that is in its third week, the cable operator said on Friday.
During the blackout, more than 3 million Time Warner Cable customers in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Dallas have been unable to watch CBS, and the companies have been unable to reach a new programming deal since their agreement expired in June.
The cable company notified customers on its website and by email that they could ask for basic indoor antennas at their local Time Warner Cable store. It also offered a $20 voucher for customers who want to buy antennas at Best Buy Co Inc.
It also offered Amazon gift cards so customers can watch CBS programs, using Amazon's Internet streaming service.

The oldest known globe to represent the New World has been discovered, researchers say.
Dated to the early 1500s, the globe was likely crafted in Florence, Italy, from the lower halves of two ostrich eggs. It is engraved with then-new and vague details about the Americas garnered from European explorers like Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. It is also decorated with monsters, intertwining waves and even a shipwrecked sailor, according to the Washington Map Society, which published a study of the artifact in its journal The Portolan.
"When I heard of this globe, I was initially skeptical about its date, origin, geography and provenance, but I had to find out for myself," S. Missinne, an independent Belgian research scholar, said in a statement. "After all no one had known of it, and discoveries of this type are extremely rare. I was excited to look into it further, and the more I did so, and the more research that we did, the clearer it became that we had a major find."
The anonymous owner of the globe, who bought it in 2012 at the London Map Fair, allowed Missinne to investigate the globe. The researcher used carbon dating, computer tomography testing, an ink assessment, as well as a geographical, cartographic, and historical analysis.
He determined that the grapefruit-sized globe was made around 1504 and was likely used to cast the famous copper Lenox globe housed at the New York Public Library, which, until now, had been thought to be the oldest globe to show the Americas, dated to 1510.
