from Bruce

Paul Krugman: Republican Death Trip (nytimes.com)
President Obama had campaigned to move beyond divisive politics, but instead he is facing an opposition that eagerly seizes on every wild rumor manufactured by the right-wing media complex.

Mark Morford: Dick Cheney rolls in his grave (sfgate.com)
Of course, he's not actually dead. He just wishes you were.

Ted Rall: WHAT IF THEY GAVE A WAR AND NOBODY KNEW WHY?
When the U.S. began bombing Afghanistan in October 2001, America's war aims were clear: capture or kill Osama bin Laden, overthrow the Taliban government, deny Al Qaeda training camps and a safe haven.

Amy Fleming: "Portrait of the artist: Malcolm McLaren, musician" (guardian.co.uk)
'The best advice I've had? "It's better to be a flamboyant failure than a benign success,"'

Anthony Stalter: A Chat with Raquel Alessi (bullz-eye.com)
On the possibility of posing in the nude: "I don't think I have the nerve to do it to be honest. I would be nuts during the day I had to take all my clothes off and stuff. I couldn't imagine having that set of nerves!"

Cary Darling: Director of 'District 9' brings S. Africa roots to surprise summer hit (McClatchy Newspapers)
Neill Blomkamp's directorial career seemed to be over before it began.

Christopher Borrelli: How Netflix gets your movies to your mailbox so fast (Chicago Tribune)
The Netflix warehouse in Carol Stream does not appear on any map. Your odds of finding it are slightly better than your odds of stumbling upon a rare insect in a field of weeds.

Roger Moore: "Ashton Kutcher: Looking for the fantasy" (The Orlando Sentinel)
If the Great American Twitter Experiment has proven anything, it's that when Ashton Kutcher talks - or tweets - people, especially women, listen. And Ashton's ready to talk about sex. Or sex scenes.

Maureen Ryan: The Emmys get it wrong, again (Chicago Tribune)
Sometimes at the Television Critics Association, you get a master class in what could be called "The Art of Making TV Critics Angry."

Giles Hattersley: Pedro Almodovar's passion for 'Broken Embraces' (timesonline.co.uk)
'Women on the Verge' director is still the weirdest genius in cinema and now he's fallen for his leading lady, Penelope Cruz.

Mac Engel: Jeremy Piven makes new pitch in used-cars movie (McClatchy Newspapers)
Jeremy Piven is late. Traffic on I-75, or something. It doesn't matter. He's Jeremy Piven. He can be late. It's his movie. And it's his birthday.

The Weekly Poll

Current Question

The 'Mercy, Me' Edition

Manson Family member Leslie Van Houten, sentenced to Life in prison for her role in the LaBianca murders, is eligible to apply for parole later this month. She has been denied parole 17 times. Many people, including film maker John Waters ( John Waters: Leslie Van Houten: A Friendship, Part 1 of 5 ), are advocating for her release. She reportedly has been a model prisoner completing all available prison programs and assisting other inmates with these programs. She has earned two college degrees and has maintained a clean disciplinary record. She has accepted full responsibility for her actions...

Should Van Houten be paroled?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Ted Danson, George Wendt, and ___?___ were the only actors to appear in every episode of the TV series Cheers.

      Rhea Perlman                                               Source

Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman and George Wendt are the only actors to appear in every episode of the TV series Cheers             Source

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
   Rhea Perlman

Joe S replied:
I'm going to throw out a guess and say Rhea Perelman, Carla

mj responded:
   It's one of two
Either John Ratzenberger (Cliff the postman) or Rhea Perlman (Carla the barmaid). I'm going with John since I think "Carla" was off screen for one of her "deliveries".

Alan J answered:
   Rhea Perlman

Sally wrote:
I gonna guess that Rhea Perlman, Ted Danson, and George Wendt, were the only actors to appear in every episode of the TV series Cheers.
PS: Hey Woofy, G Gordon now has you on tape!!

OK, this must be either John Ratzenberger or Rhea Pearlman.
I'm going to say Pearlman (didn't Cliff's Mother make some appearances in his stead?).

~ Tony In Philly replied:
   Rhea Perlman

And, MAM     answered:

Yesterday (Wednesday) I had just about given up hope that you had found a fix for your ftp/computer problem. So, just before I headed outside to view the Meteor Shower at midnight, I checked 'one more time'. And there you were! But I spent way too long looking at the night sky to open the page up and read it when I came back inside, so left it for today (Thursday). Was delighted to see that you seem to really have a 'fix'. Was also delighted to see 4 'shooting stars', one very large and low helicopter, one very high jet, and numerous lightning bugs. Cats sat on the other side of the screen door and hammered and banged on it . . . "What are you doing out there???"

In the mail:

Subject: Frasier Theme
Technically speaking, the television show, Frasier, did not have a theme song; or more specifically opening theme music. The little ditty sung at the end of the show, Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs, is what is called in the industry as the Closing Credits music. The show, and it was the first to do so, started with a few throwaway musical notes and then went right into the show.
This device was designed to get the show started and hook the viewer before their feeble little mind could muster up enough electricity to operate their thumb on the remote.
And it worked.
It also facilitated the stuffing of more commercials in the time slot and it allowed the commercials to start sooner.

Thanks, Steven!
