Tom Danehy: Tom offers a helpful step-by-step plan to keep Pima out of trouble next time (Tucson Weekly)
The Tucson Weekly, I am proud to say, is coming up on its 30th year of serving Tucson, Southern Arizona, and the entire world. (I can make that latter claim because I once got a hate email from Pakistan. It was cool. The email writer didn't sign it, so when I responded, I referred to him as "Jimmy Jihad." I figured that was all right, since people in that part of the world are known for their senses of humor.)
John Cheese: 5 Things to Remember When Your Life Goes to Hell (Cracked)
If there's an upside to spending most of your life in abject poverty and soul-sucking alcoholism, it's that you become an expert in shit-handling. Many of you out there can testify that it doesn't make you panic any less when personal disasters do pop up, but it seems like the more frequently you fall into a sewer, the more skilled you become at battling the turtles that reside within.
Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin is a fictional character from the 1960s TV spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
The series was remarkable for pairing an American Napoleon Solo and the Georgian (Georgia URSS) Kuryakin as two spies who work together for an international espionage organisation at the height of the Cold War. Kuryakin was played by Scottish actor David McCallum.
Since 2003, McCallum has been playing Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard in the TV series NCIS. In the Season 2 episode, "Meat Puzzle" around 20 minutes, 50 seconds into the episode, when Agent Jethro Gibbs is asked, "What did Ducky look like when he was younger?," Gibbs responds, "Illya Kuryakin".

Alec Baldwin is in talks with MSNBC for a possible talk show, insiders with knowledge of the situation confirmed to TheWrap on Thursday.
Baldwin, an outspoken liberal, would be a good fit for the left-leaning network, which has an opening in its Friday night 10 p.m. timeslot. He's made no secret of his politics, even flirting with the idea of running for political office, telling the New York Times in 2011 that he might run for mayor of New York City someday. In 2009, he discussed running for Congress in an interview with Playboy.
A hosting gig seems like a much more likely match. The actor was reportedly in talks to take over Carson Daly's late night talk show around the time that Jimmy Fallon was tapped to replace Jay Leno, but those potential plans never came to fruition. Subsequently, Daly's show was renewed for Season 13 with the host.
Baldwin's also hosted a biweeky podcast called "Here's the Thing" for New York public radio station WNYC since October 2011, so interviewing Hollywood celebrities and media personalities is nothing new to him.

Jimmy Fallon says he and his wife had their baby daughter with the help of a surrogate.
Winnie Rose Fallon, the daughter of the NBC late-night comic and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, was born July 23. Fallon said in a portion of a "Today" show interview broadcast Friday that the couple had been trying for a while to have a child before succeeding with the help of a surrogate.
The couple kept it all a secret until Winnie was born.
NBC said a more extensive portion of Savannah Guthrie's interview with the incoming "The Tonight Show" host will be broadcast next week.
A judge granted the mother of Amanda Bynes a temporary conservatorship on Friday to make decisions about her daughter's treatment in case the former child actress is released from a facility where she is being treated for mental health issues.
The decision by Ventura County Superior Court Judge Glen M. Reiser came more than two weeks after Bynes, 27, was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital after months of erratic behavior.
The ruling permits Lynn Bynes to control decisions involving the health and finances of her daughter. It will be in effect until Sept. 30.
A psychiatric hold on Bynes has been extended for 30 days but could be ended any time.
NBC is assuring its gay and lesbian employees who may cover the Winter Olympics in Sochi that it will do everything possible to keep them safe following Russia's passage of anti-gay law.
The network said in a memo that it finds Russia's law and the prejudices it represents to be "deeply troubling and diametrically opposed to everything that the Olympics symbolize." The note by Craig Robinson, NBC Universal's executive vice president and chief diversity officer, was sent Thursday to all company employees who have identified themselves as gay or lesbian.
NBC and its cable partners are telecasting the Olympics in the United States. It's not sure how many employees they will be sending to Sochi. In past Olympics, some 3,000 people worked during the games for NBC, although some of them were not in the host country.
Robinson wrote in his memo that "your security is paramount and we will do everything possible to protect the rights, safety and well-being of our employees."
He said that Russia's law violates the International Olympic Committee's charter calling sports a human right that every individual must be able to practice without discrimination.

CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta says he spoke too soon in opposing the medical use of marijuana in the past and that he now believes the drug can have very real benefits for people with specific health problems.
Gupta, the network's chief medical correspondent and a brain surgeon, detailed his change of heart in an interview Friday and in an article for CNN's website titled, "Why I changed my mind on weed." He will narrate a documentary on the topic that will air on the network Sunday.
He wrote in Time magazine in 2009 about his opposition to laws that would make the drug available for medical purposes. "Smoking the stuff is not going to do your health any good," he wrote then. But Gupta said Friday he too easily associated marijuana with "malingerers that just wanted to get high."
Gupta said he didn't look hard enough at research on the topic, and found some new research that had been done since then. He was encouraged to look into the issue further upon meeting a 5-year-old girl in Colorado for whom medical marijuana has sharply cut down on the amount of seizures she had been suffering.
"We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that," he wrote.
The online magazine Slate.com and two other publications have said they will no longer refer to the National Football League's Washington, D.C., football team as "Redskins," a name Native Americans have condemned as offensive.
The Washington franchise has long declined to change its name despite criticism from Native Americans and others. A group of Native Americans has gone to court to void the federal trademark protections of the team's name.
In response to Slate's announcement, New Republic editor Franklin Foer Tweeted on Thursday that his publication would follow suit.
The liberal Mother Jones magazine said on Friday it also would avoid using the name.
Other newspapers, websites and sports writers have taken similar stands, including The Washington City Paper, Washington online site DCist.com, the Kansas City Star newspaper and football writers at the Buffalo News and the Philadelphia Daily News.

An independent television station in Libya says gunmen have killed one of its anchors in the eastern city of Benghazi.
The station said Ezzedine Kossad was shot dead Friday while he was driving his car in Benghazi. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the killing.
Kossad presented a show called "Let's Try Together" on Libya's Al-Hurra TV channel, launched during the 2011 civil war that toppled longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
After announcing his death, Al-Hurra stoppezd its normal broadcast and started airing recitations of the Quran.
Casino giant Caesars Entertainment Corp. informed regulators Friday that it is selling its property in Macau to an Asian developer for $438 million.
The Las Vegas-based company reported in a quarterly filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it agreed Tuesday to sell the golf course property to Pearl Dynasty Investments Ltd.
The publicly traded company said the sale is expected to close by the end of the year, and it intends to use the proceeds to pay down debt. Company stock was trading Friday at $18.25, up 64 cents or 3.6 percent.
Caesars is the only major U.S. casino company without a casino in the Chinese gambling enclave about a one-hour ferry ride from Hong Kong. Rival companies MGM Resorts International, Wynn Resorts Ltd. and Las Vegas Sands Corp. have Macau properties.

Only months after archaeologists discovered the missing body of Richard III, researchers are about to test human remains to see if they are those of another king, Alfred the Great, a ninth-century monarch.
Officials have given the go-ahead to analyze bones found in an unmarked grave at a church in Winchester, southwest England, the capital of Alfred's kingdom, to determine if they are those of one of the best-known figures from early English history.
Alfred ruled the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, an area which covered much of southern England, from 871 until 899 and was famed for military victories against the Vikings who had invaded much of the north of the country.
The remains were exhumed in March but church permission, known as a faculty, has only now been given to local community group Hyde900, which has been researching Alfred's final resting place, to carry out the tests.
Down a narrow, dead-end street in a middle-class neighborhood of Mexico City, a three-story brick house with white window frames gives up no hint of the bizarre, even shocking images that were dreamed up inside.
Luis Buñuel, known as the father of surrealist cinema, lived in the simple, gated house over the last 30 years of his life after settling in Mexico as an exile from post-civil war Spain. For a man who assaulted moviegoers with such shots as an ant-infested hand, an eyeball sliced open with a straight razor, and elegant diners sitting on toilets, Buñuel enjoyed a surprisingly genteel life here.
Now, the Spanish government, which bought the house from Buñnuel's family, has opened it to a public long fascinated with his work. The plan is to turn the building into a meeting place for Spanish and Mexican moviemakers, with workshops and occasional exhibits staged to celebrate Spanish-language cinema. The inauguration has been timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Buñuel's death in the Mexican capital.
Critics still regard Buñnuel as one of cinema's greatest directors, with movies such as "L'Age d'Or" and "That Obscure Object of Desire" pushing the boundaries of both taste and narrative.
Despite that colorful legacy, Buñuel's home is being presented as simply as the director left it, and not with the museum treatment given to the much-visited Mexico City abodes of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky and surrealist painter Frida Kahlo. The house can only be visited during events, exhibits or by scheduling a visit with Spain's culture ministry.
Female giant panda Tian Tian in her enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo on Friday, Aug. 9 2013. The female giant panda at Edinburgh Zoo is showing encouraging signs she may be pregnant, according to keepers. The zoo says nesting behavior and changes in hormone levels suggest Tian Tian could be expecting a cub - or experiencing a phantom pregnancy, not uncommon in pandas. The zoo artificially inseminated Tian Tian, or Sweetie, after she was reluctant to mate with male companion Yang Guang, or Sunshine. The two animals arrived from China in 2011, and are the only pandas in Britain.
