• In the first half of the 1800s, George Catlin sought to paint Native Americans and Native American culture before the West was tamed and their way of life was lost. Later, he sought to sell his Indian Gallery collection of paintings and artifacts of Native American life to the United States government but failed. However, much of his collection ended up in the Smithsonian anyway, donated to it by the heirs of Joseph Harrison, who purchased the Indian Gallery after it was sold to pay Mr. Catlin’s debts. Ironically, it is a good thing that the U.S. government did not buy the Indian Gallery when it was offered for sale earlier. If the Indian Gallery had been put in the Smithsonian before 1865, it would have been burned up in a great fire that destroyed the Smithsonian building that year. By the way, although this next anecdote is not funny, it illustrates how much one artist valued art: George Catlin made it his mission paint Native Americans and Native American, and he took his mission seriously. One day, after he had wounded a bull bison, he began to make sketches of it. After the wounded bull, near death, fell down, he threw his hat at it and harassed it until it got up again. He felt that such harassment of a dying animal was justified in order to make authentic sketches of the bison. Also by the way, in the old days, Western cowboys did not particularly care for people who didn’t dress like them. A young man newly arrived from Boston once entered a saloon in a Western town while wearing a suit and patent leather shoes. A few minutes later, he emerged with a dazed look, wearing an undershirt and one sock. The cowboys inside had resented his clothing, ordered him to buy a round of drinks, and when he said that all he had was 25 cents, had stripped him and pawned his clothes to pay for the drinks.
• For many years, Carl Fabergé created an Easter egg for the Czar of Russia to give to his wife. Each Easter egg, when opened, contained a surprise, such as a model of the Czar’s private train or a model of the Czar’s yacht or a model of the coach that the Czarina had ridden in to a coronation. The surprise was a surprise to everyone, even to the Czar, who had commissioned the work of art. Once the Czar asked Mr. Fabergé what surprise he was planning, and Mr. Fabergé would tell him only, “Your Imperial majesty will be satisfied.” He was. (By the way, a woman once asked Mr. Fabergé this silly question: “What shape will your eggs have this year?” He joked, “Madam, this year they will be square!”) Today, any museum with a Fabergé Easter egg is a proud museum.
• Many horticulturalists work at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. They care for the plants used in the exhibits, and they sometimes notice things in paintings that other people don’t notice. For example, Rembrandt Peale’s portrait of Rubens Peale, his teenage brother, includes a geranium. Museum horticulturalists look at the painting and wish that Rubens Peale would water the geranium.
Music
• Throughout his life, jazz musician Louis Armstrong made collages about events that were important to him. Many of his collages concerned events from his personal life, but other collages were about events that made history. For example, one collage was created from newspaper clippings telling how Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in modern major-league professional baseball. A study of the collages, many of which are on display at Queens College in New York City, shows that Mr. Armstrong followed closely the advances African Americans were making in civil rights.
Peridot (sometimes called chrysolite) is gem-quality olivine and a silicate mineral. As peridot is a magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite). Its green color is dependent on the iron contents within the structure of the gem. Peridot occurs in silica-deficient rocks such a volcanic basalt as well as in pallasitic meteorites. Peridot is one of only two gems observed to be formed not in the Earth’s crust, but in molten rock of the upper mantle. Gem-quality peridot is rare to find on Earth's surface due to its susceptibility to weathering during transportation from deep within the mantle to the surface.
In the Middle Ages, the gemstone was considered a stone that could provide healing powers, curing depression and opening the heart. Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August and the 16 year wedding anniversary gemstone.
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color: an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green. In rare cases, peridot may have a medium-dark toned, pure green with no secondary yellow hue or brown mask.
Olivine, of which peridot is a type, is a common mineral in mafic and ultramafic rocks, often found in lava and in peridotite xenoliths of the mantle, which lava carries to the surface; however, gem-quality peridot occurs in only a fraction of these settings. Peridots can also be found in meteorites.
Peridots can be differentiated by size and composition. A peridot formed as a result of volcanic activity tends to contain higher concentrations of lithium, nickel and zinc than those found in meteorites.

A quick search indicates that peridot is the gemstone found in pallasitic meteorites. Good thing I checked; I had no idea.
Another day without using the a/c…I could get used to this.

Once entered, there is no way to unlearn the awakened chimeras of the self.”

CBS’ late-night talk shows The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and The Late Late Show With James Corden are returning to the studio.
The shows have been filming remotely since the COVID-19 production shutdown in March but will return to some level of normality from next week.
The move comes after The Tonight Show Starrring Jimmy Fallon was the first to return to the studio two weeks ago, while Conan O’Brien has been doing his TBS show from LA comedy club Largo.
Colbert said on July 24, before heading off on a two-week break, that he “won’t be in the Ed Sullivan Theater, but I also won’t be sleeping where I work”. It’s not immediately clear where he will be filming the show from.
Both hosts have been filming their shows from their houses. Colbert, who started off during the lockdown filming in his bathtub, has been shooting with the help of his wife at his home in South Carolina, while Corden, in full suit and tie, has been filming his show in his garage in LA.
Lachlan Murdoch, the CEO of Fox Corporation, told employees on Thursday that the company anticipates that non-production staffers who are working remotely "will continue to do so for the remainder of the calendar year," according to The Washington Post's Jeremy Barr.
Murdoch's memo to employees comes as multiple popular hosts on Fox News, which is Fox Corp's flagship news organization, continue pushing for states to reopen schools as new coronavirus cases spike across the country.
"Success leaves clues and the Netherlands, Australia, and those countries have opened ... Germany [has] opened," "Fox & Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade said on July 8. "So there's no reason for America not to be open."
Opinion commentator Laura Ingraham said on July 14 that other media figures are "lying to you when they say it's too dangerous to reopen schools."
Primetime host Tucker Carlson told viewers the government had "outsourced the decision to public health officials" and that "the public health establishment failed us badly" in recommending stay-at-home and similar orders.
First, Oprah Winfrey put Breonna Taylor on the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine. Now the media mogul is spreading her message with billboards demanding justice for the Kentucky woman shot to death during a police raid.
Twenty-six billboards displaying a portrait of Taylor are going up across Louisville, Kentucky, demanding that the police officers involved in her death be arrested and charged, according to social justice organization Until Freedom. That's one billboard for every year of the Black woman's life.
The billboards, funded by the magazine, showcase the magazine cover dedicated to Taylor, the Courier Journal reported. Also displayed is a quote from Winfrey: “If you turn a blind eye to racism, you become an accomplice to it.”
Taylor, an emergency medical tech studying to become a nurse, was shot multiple times March 13 when police officers burst into her Louisville apartment using a no-knock warrant during a narcotics investigation. The warrant to search her home was in connection with a suspect who did not live there and no drugs were found.
The decision whether to bring state-level criminal charges against the Louisville officers rests with Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. He took the Taylor case after a local prosecutor recused himself from reviewing the matter. One of the officers has been terminated and two other officers are on administrative reassignment.
Whoever was behind the music at President Donald Trump’s appearance at an Ohio washing machine factory on Thursday might want to rethink the playlist.
The Guns N’ Roses’ cover of Paul McCartney and Wings’ “Live and Let Die” blared on the loudspeaker before the president’s speech at a Whirlpool plant in Clyde, Ohio.
The Intercept’s Robert Mackey posted video of the tasteless moment, noting that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine could not attend because he had tested positive for COVID-19, “the disease that killed over 1,400 Americans yesterday.” A second test later showed DeWine negative.
The U.S. has surpassed 160,000 coronavirus deaths under Trump’s watch and the toll is projected to reach nearly 300,000 by December.
The same song played during Trump’s visit to a Honeywell factory that makes face masks in May.
President Trump (R-Grifter) would love to have dinner with you, for the low, low price of a $10,000 fine.
The Trump campaign blitzed supporters this week asking for donations in exchange for the chance to attend a "VIP dinner" with the president in Southampton, New York on Aug. 8, but Popular Information's Judd Legum, who investigated the contest, says the fundraising attempt is a pretty blatant "scam."
The ads, which reportedly cost the campaign $100,000 to run on Facebook, failed to mention that anyone residing in one of 35 states is legally barred from attending the fundraiser (or any event in the state of New York, for that matter).
Since late June, visitors to New York who are coming from states with surging COVID-19 numbers have been told they need to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine to help prevent the virus' spread. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has since doubled down on that requirement, imposing fines and installing checkpoints for visitors.
The Trump campaign seems to have advertised the fundraiser knowing much of its targeted audience wouldn't be in a position to actually attend, as the contest rules give the campaign permission "to suspend or cancel the Promotion" if any "viruses, bugs, unauthorized human intervention or other causes beyond Sponsor's control" interfere.
The last fully intact ice shelf in the Canadian Arctic has collapsed, losing more than 40 percent of its area in just two days at the end of July, researchers said on Thursday.
The Milne Ice Shelf is at the fringe of Ellesmere Island, in the sparsely populated northern Canadian territory of Nunavut.
“Above normal air temperatures, offshore winds and open water in front of the ice shelf are all part of the recipe for ice shelf break up,” the Canadian Ice Service said on Twitter when it announced the loss on Sunday.
“Entire cities are that size. These are big pieces of ice,” said Luke Copland, a glaciologist at the University of Ottawa who was part of the research team studying the Milne Ice Shelf.
The shelf’s area shrank by about 80 square kilometers. By comparison, the island of Manhattan in New York covers roughly 60 square kilometers.
Kanye West has appeared to suggest that he is running a spoiler campaign against Democrat Joe Biden in a bid to help Donald Trump (R-Failure) win a second term in office.
In a text interview with Forbes magazine on Thursday, Mr West said he was “walking for president” when asked if he had chosen to run to hurt Mr Biden’s chances.
Commentators and pundits have repeatedly questioned the motives behind West’s decision to run for the White House, ever since his campaign was launched late, on 4 July.
At that stage, West had already forfeited 225 Electoral College votes, making it virtually impossible for him to win the 2020 race for the Oval Office.
When it was pointed out to West that it was unlikely he could win November’s poll, and that his campaign was being run as a distraction, he replied: “I’m not going to argue with you. Jesus is King.”
Today's humans carry the genes of an ancient, unknown ancestor, left there by hominin species intermingling perhaps a million years ago.
The ancestor may have been Homo erectus, but no one knows for sure — the genome of that extinct species of human has never been sequenced, said Adam Siepel, a computational biologist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and one of the authors of a new paper examining the relationships of ancient human ancestors.
The new research, published today (Aug. 6) in the journal PLOS Genetics, also finds that ancient humans mated with Neanderthals between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago, well before the more recent, and better-known mixing of the two species occurred, after Homo sapiens migrated in large numbers out of Africa and into Europe 50,000 years ago. Thanks to this ancient mixing event, Neanderthals actually owe between 3% and 7% of their genomes to ancient Homo sapiens, the researchers reported.
"Our best conjecture is that an early group of anatomically modern humans left Africa then encountered and interbred with Neandertals, perhaps in the Middle East," Siepel told Live Science. "This lineage [of humans] would then have been lost — either gone extinct, or absorbed by the Neandertals, or migrated back to Africa."
As scientists have been able to sequence more fragile fragments of DNA from fossils of ancient human ancestors, they've discovered a complex web of interbreeding stretching back millennia. Some Pacific Islanders, for example, carry pieces of the DNA of a mysterious ancient species of humans known as Denisovans.
