Paul Krugman: Debt, Depression, DeMarco (New York Ties)
But the DeMarco affair nonetheless demonstrates, once again, the extent to which U.S. economic policy has been crippled by unyielding, irresponsible political opposition. If our economy is still deeply depressed, much - and I would say most - of the blame rests not with Mr. Obama but with the very people seeking to use that depressed economy for political advantage.
Susan Estrich: Romney Does It Again (Creators Syndicate)
Palestinian leaders are calling him a "racist." But the real problem for him, back home at least, may not be accusations of racism, but the realization that this guy is just not ready for prime time, much less the presidency.
Mitt Romney's Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Trip To Europe
And then […] in Poland, as reporters who had traveled a cumulative 10,000 miles with the campaign faced their sixth day without having an opportunity to ask a single question to the candidate, a Romney campaign spokesman told a restless gaggle to "kiss my ass" when they tried to shout their questions at Romney as he left Pilsudski Square in Warsaw.

Doesn't the credit card company understand that even if they are paying lower-wage costs for a call center in the Philippines, they also are losing skills that are valuable to the company; that people like me, who are troubled by the wholesale outsourcing of jobs, who are trying to save the jobs of people like her, don't particularly enjoy being humiliated in restaurants because somebody somewhere in the world thinks it's suspicious that you would pay a Maryland company to get from Virginia to D.C.?
"The Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" Generation Takes Home Gymnastics Gold (Slate)
When the American women gymnasts took the team gold in the Olympics in London […], the coverage, and their celebratory interviews were full of references to the Magnificent Seven, the American women who were the last to claim that same championship in 1996, the summer after stars Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Weiber, and McKayla Maroney were born, and just a bit before the birth of Kyla Ross.
Hillel Italie: "Gore Vidal Dead: American Intellectual, Author And Playwright Dies At 86" (Huffington Post)
… Vidal made his living - a very good living - from challenging power, not holding it. He was wealthy and famous and committed to exposing a system often led by men he knew firsthand. During the days of Franklin Roosevelt, one of the few leaders whom Vidal admired, he might have been called a "traitor to his class." The real traitors, Vidal would respond, were the upholders of his class.
Roger Ebert: Review of "Millions" (4 stars)
The closing sequence is a bit of a stretcher, I will be the first to admit, but why not go for broke? One of the tests of sainthood is the performance of a miracle, and since Damian is clearly on the road to sainthood, that is permitted him. For that matter, Boyce and Boyle have performed a miracle with their movie. This is one of the best films of the year.

Desi Arnaz (March 2, 1917 - December 2, 1986) was a Cuban-born American musician, actor and television producer. While he gained international renown for leading a Latin music band, the Desi Arnaz Orchestra, he is best known for his role as Ricky Ricardo on the American TV series I Love Lucy, starring with Lucille Ball, to whom he was married at the time. He is generally credited as the inventor of the rerun.
Desi Arnaz was born Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III in Santiago de Cuba to Desiderio Alberto Arnaz II (March 8, 1894 - May 31, 1973) and his wife Dolores de Acha (April 2, 1896 - October 24, 1988). His father was Santiago's youngest mayor and also served in the Cuban House of Representatives. His maternal grandfather was Alberto de Acha, one of the three founders of Bacardi Rum.

Bacardi Rum has its own particular story and its history is connected with a most unsuspecting television star: Desi Arnaz, aka Ricky Ricardo of "I Love Lucy" fame. His mother, Dolores Acha y de Socias, was one of the most beautiful and prominent women in Latin America, and her father, Alberto, was one of the three original founders of the Bacardi Rum Company. The family owned three ranches, a palatial home and a vacation mansion on a private island in Santiago Bay, Cuba. All that changed in 1933 when they lost everything to the political dictatorship and bloody revolution that overtook Cuba. Fulgencio Batista had emerged as the leader of the Revolution, and would control Cuba for most of the next 25 years. He didn't like the US Government, but loved corporate and mob money. Then along came Fidel and Che! As far as the rum----Goes down easy (even 151 as a Green Lizard), but comes up swift and projected!!!! Party till you puke then party some more!!! That attitude eventually got me to sober up!!!!

Members of an all-woman Russian punk band on trial for staging a protest at the altar of Moscow's main cathedral will likely receive long jail terms despite President Vladimir Putinsaying they should not be judged too harshly, a defense lawyer said.
A Moscow court refused to hear most defense witnesses called to testify on Friday on behalf of the protest action by the Pussy Riot band, dimming hopes among human rights groups that Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, could escape lengthy sentences.
Band members face up to seven years in prison if convicted of hooliganism in a case that has drawn international criticism and which the opposition says is part of the Kremlin's crackdown on dissent.
Putin said in London on Thursday that there was "nothing good" about the February protest which saw the band performing a "punk prayer" at the altar of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral, calling on the Virgin Mary to "Throw Putin out!"

Authors suing Google over the digitization of their books have asked a New York court to order the Internet company to pay $750 for each book it copied, distributed or displayed.
The authors' filing was lodged in federal court in the Southern District of New York last month, but was only made public on Friday. In the filing, the Authors Guild, whose president is novelist-lawyer Scott Thurow, urged the court to rule that Google'sdigitization project does not constitute "fair use" under copyright law.
Litigation over Google's digitization project began seven years ago after Google began copying millions of books thanks to an agreement with libraries, including those at Harvard University, Oxford University and Stanford University.
Google has said it has scanned more than 20 million books since the agreement was made in 2004.
In March 2011, a federal judge rejected a $125 million settlement in the case. In May, the authors were granted class action status.
The discovery of century-old baseball cards in an Ohio attic isn't going to make anyone super-rich even though it's being called one of the most exciting finds in the history of sports card collecting. That's because the cards and the money are being evenly divided among 20 cousins.
A sampling of the treasure trove that had been untouched for 100 years was sold Thursday night during the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore. The 37 baseball cards featuring the likes of Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Honus Wagner fetched $566,132 in brisk online and live bidding. They were expected to bring about $500,000.
What made this find so special was that the 700 cards were nearly pristine, the finest examples anyone had ever seen from an extremely rare series given out with candy around 1910.
The best of the bunch was sold in three lots - one, which sold for $286,800, was a nearly complete E98 set, the name of the the series the cards were issued under, and another was a Honus Wagner card that was judged to be in perfect condition by Professional Sports Authenticator, a company that grades cards on a 1-to-10 scale based of their condition. It brought $239,000.

Dan Aykroyd confirmed to the British daily Metro that Bill Murraywill not be part of the cast for the forthcoming reboot of the 1980s movie franchise Ghostbusters.
"I can tell you [Bill Murray] won't be involved," reveals a disappointed Dan Aydroyd. "It's sad but we're passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn't seem to be coming and we have to move on. It's time to make the third one."
The project for a third Ghostbusters film has been underway since the '90s but it only got the greenlight from Columbia Pictures in 2008. Over the past four years, Bill Murray's reluctance to get back in Peter Venkman's ghost-hunting suit postponed the shooting of the movie, in spite of a solid script.
The film will see a younger bunch of Ghostbusters cleaning up the neighborhood.
Former members of the J. Geils band may have to "freeze frame" their upcomingtour.
John Geils, who formed the J. Geils Band, filed a lawsuit against the other members of the rock group this week, claiming they are unlawfully using the band's trademarked name for an upcoming tour without him and interfering with his business activities.
The lawsuit says that band members Richard Salwitz, Danny Klein, Peter Wolf and Seth Justman had "planned and conspired" to exclude Geils from performing with them under the J. Geils Band name on a recently announced tour.
The band members had planned 11 concerts without Geils as "The J. Geils Band," beginning August 25 in Syracuse, New York.
Geils is seeking full rights to the trademark, prevention of other members' use of the name, and damages. The lawsuit was filed in Boston Superior Court.

Retired adult film actress Jenna Jameson voiced support for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a strip club Thursday, CBS San Francisco reports:
"I'm very looking forward to a Republican being back in office," Jameson said while sipping champagne in a VIP room at Gold Club in the city's South of Market neighborhood. "When you're rich, you want a Republican in office."
Jameson was being interviewed "exclusively" by a CBS reporter who was "on assignment" at "an event marking the 8th anniversary" of the San Francisco-area strip club.
The Oscar-winning director and longtime movie star says he's endorsing the Republican presidential candidate.
Eastwood was among those attending a Romney fundraiser Friday night in Sun Valley, Idaho.
In February, Eastwood told Fox "News" that he wasn't supporting any politician at that time. Some saw the "halftime in America" ad he made for the Super Bowl as a nod toward President Barack Obama. Eastwood responded then by saying he was not "politically affiliated" with the president.

The frontman of the U.S. heavy metal band Lamb of God has been released from a Czech prison on $400,000 bail as police investigate him for allegedly pushing a fan off a stage who later died of his injuries, an official said Friday.
A Prague court on Thursday dismissed a prosecution request that Randy Blythe be banned from leaving the country. Blythe's lawyer, Martin Radvan, said the singer had flown out of the Czech capital for the United States on Friday.
The 41-year-old was arrested on June 27 when he returned to the Czech Republic for another gig, not realizing that he was being investigated for bodily harm resulting in death during a concert he gave in Prague in 2010, said Radvan.
Blythe, who has not been charged with a crime, said he was not aware of what had happened to the fan at Prague's Abaton club that year and was surprised to be arrested when he returned to the Czech Republic to play a show scheduled for June 28, said Radvan.
British filmmaker Anthony Baxter learned the hard way what it would take to make his debut feature documentary: Getting arrested, re-mortgaging his house for funding and personally phoning cinema houses to screen his film.
Those might seem like familiar hardships to documentary makers. But add to that mix taking on U.S. business magnate Donald Trump (R-Attention Whore) over a proposed $1.5 billion golf and hotel resort in Scotland, and Baxter hesitates when asked whether he would do it once more.
"It has been very difficult, I wouldn't necessarily want to do it again," the former BBC television producer said in an interview. "But I do think it is so important that we hold people in power to account as journalists and filmmakers."
Baxter's "You've Been Trumped" opened in select U.S. cinemas on Friday, more than three years after he picked up his camera when the Scottish parliament overruled a local council in Aberdeenshire to let Trump build two 18-hole golf courses and a 450-room luxury hotel on 1,400 hectares (3,460 acres) of coastal land.
The film portrays Trump as a cartoonish celebrity tycoon pitted against hardy local residents whose lives and homes are disrupted by the project. It also aims to examine the economic benefits of thousands of jobs promised by Trump versus the environmental impact on rare sand dunes in the Menie Estate, which Trump bought in 2005.

Stevie Wonder is ending his 11-year marriage to fashion designer Kai Millard Morris.
The 62-year-old musician cites irreconcilable differences in papers filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. He filed the documents under his real name, Stevland Morris.
Wonder and Millard were married Sept. 1, 2001. According to court documents, they separated in October 2009. They have two sons, 10-year-old Kailand and 7-year-old Mandla. Wonder is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the two boys and agrees to pay spousal support to his former wife.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks they are so dangerous that the agency did something a few days ago that it hasn't done in 11 years. It sued the maker of the adult toy, Buckyballs, to have them removed from the market.
Buckyballs are very tiny and very powerful. Young children sometimes think they are candy and try to eat them. Older children who want tongue piercings without actually getting their tongues pierced, place one on the top of the tongue and another on the bottom. But when they get loose, they can travel through the body tearing holes in the walls of the intestines, and ripping the lining of the stomach.
Buckyballs do carry very powerful warnings, but the CPSC says that is not enough. A group of doctors recently showed some members of Congress pictures of the damage they can do to bodies of young people. They strongly support the ban.
