Tom Danehy: Just when it seems like the whole world has gone to hell, a high school student gives Tom a shot of hope (Tucson Weekly)
It all sucks, but then, every now and then, you come across something that makes you smile and think, "Y'know, Tucson is a pretty cool place to be."

Paul Kaufman: To the Brink, Again (New York Times)
But think about that for a moment: the cause for which the GOP is willing to go to the brink, breaking all political norms, threatening the US and world economies with incalculable damage, is the cause of preventing people with preexisting conditions and/or low incomes from getting health insurance. Apparently, the prospect that their fellow citizens might receive this help is so horrifying that nothing else matters.

Rachel Maddow: What the GOP is Doing in North Carolina
[They] are ramming through with basically no debate [a bill that] would [put] an end to same-day voter registration which over 100,000 people used in the state in last November's election … get rid of state support for voter registration drives … ban local election officials from extending polling times for an hour if, for example, there's really long lines still waiting outside … lop off a full week of early voting … get rid of a program in high schools that reaches out to students who are nearing the age of voting to show them how to be model citizens. … We can't have students registering to vote! We can't have that! … It all goes away under the bill senate Republicans advanced …

Andrew Tobias: What the S.O.P. Stands For
At its core, here's what Obamacare does: it taxes the best off so virtually everyone can get better health care coverage.

Rachel Maddow: Obamacare
... you know, there is a pilot project that has been run in our country on how to implement health reform. The reform law that everybody calls Obamacare is essentially the same thing as the Romneycare health reform that Mitt Romney signed into law and implemented in Massachusetts where I live. Very successful. Very popular. Very effective.

When you're a tourist, you're subjected to plenty of advice about how to protect yourself from the many dangers that await you in a strange land. Trivia Question of the Day

A Furcula is more commonly known by what name?

Send your answer to Marty

Trivia Question from Yesterday

He wrote "The Unicorn" (which became the signature piece for the Irish Rovers in 1968), "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash, and "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" for Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (and a lot more). What is his name?

      Shel Silverstein                                                      Source

Sheldon Allan "Shel" Silverstein (September 25, 1930 - May 10, 1999), was an American poet, singer-songwriter, cartoonist, screenwriter and author of children's books. He styled himself as Uncle Shelby in his children's books. Translated into more than 30 languages, his books have sold over 20 million copies.

Silverstein's passion for music was clear early on as he studied briefly at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. His musical output included a large catalog of songs; a number of which were hits for other artists, most notably the rock group Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show. He wrote Tompall Glaser's highest-charting solo single "Put Another Log on the Fire", "One's on the Way" (a hit for Loretta Lynn), "The Unicorn" (which became the signature piece for the Irish Rovers in 1968) and "25 Minutes to Go", sung by Johnny Cash, about a man on Death Row with each line counting down one minute closer. Silverstein also wrote one of Johnny Cash's best known whimsical hits, "A Boy Named Sue."

He wrote the lyrics and music for most of the Dr. Hook songs, including "The Cover of the Rolling Stone", "Freakin' at the Freakers' Ball," "Sylvia's Mother", "The Things I Didn't Say" and a cautionary song about venereal disease, "Don't Give a Dose to the One You Love Most".        Source

  Bear In There
  from the book "
A Light in the Attic" (1981)
  by Shel Silverstein

      There's a Polar Bear
      In our Frigidaire--
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
      And his big hairy paws
      In the buttery dish,
      He's nibbling the noodles,
      He's munching the rice,
      He's slurping the soda,
      He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
      If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
      To know he's in there--
      That Polary Bear
      In our Fridgitydaire.

And congratulations Marty on reaching another milestone, but really, how long have you been doing this for us? It's been a lot longer than 667 days.

Joe -
Yesterday was the e-page's 12th 'birthday'.
As to '667 (now 668) days' - It's the number of days since my last vacation, as well as the number of days since I last visited PA. It's also how long it's been since I missed a day.
OTOH, got a ways to go to match the old record - 1518 days in a row.

Joins Florida Protesters

Harry Belafonte

Singer and entertainer Harry Belafonte is calling on Florida Gov. Rick Scott to listen to protesters who are asking for a special legislative session to examine the state's self-defense laws after the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Scott has refused.

Protesters upset with the verdict have spent nearly two weeks at the Capitol building. Belafonte said Friday that Scott still has a chance to act before the protests intensify and the situation becomes "ungovernable."

Belafonte says he has never been to Tallahassee before. He was part of a large contingent that was chanting and singing in the hallway outside the governor's office.

Law-enforcement reports showed that 86 people spent the night in the Capitol as part of the protest. Protesters say they are prepared to continue their standoff for weeks.

Jennifer Tilly's Ex

Sam Simon

Called both "brilliantly funny" and "mentally unbalanced" by Simpsons co-creator Matt Groening, television writer-producer Sam Simon, 58, has become known throughout Hollywood for his philanthropy since leaving the iconic animated series in 1993 (he retained a highly lucrative executive producer title). A Stanford grad who grew up in Beverly Hills and Malibu -- and rose in the industry at a young age to become the showrunner of Taxi at 24 -- Simon confesses, "I don't know," when it comes to estimating his charitable donations to date.

His contributions include founding the Malibu-based Sam Simon Foundation (worth nearly $23 million as of 2011) that rescues the hungry (humans -- but with vegan foods only) and strays (dogs, of any variety). His other pet charities include PETA, which in February thanked him for his support by naming its Norfolk, Va., headquarters the Sam Simon Center; international nonprofit Save the Children; and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a global marine conservation organization. His contributions led it to name one of the four ships in its fleet of vessels, used to hinder whaling and illegal fishing, the M/Y Simon in 2012. He also turned a Malibu spread into a canine haven that rescues dogs from kill shelters and trains them as companions for the deaf.

Five months ago, the nine-time Emmy winner -- whose post-Simpsons projects have included directing (The Drew Carey Show), hosting (the short-lived poker reality series Sam's Game for Playboy TV) and consulting (currently on FX's Anger Management) -- was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. He confirmed during a May 16 WTF With Marc Maron podcast that he was given the prognosis of three to six months to live and that he will donate nearly all of his sizable Simpsons royalties -- which he has said earn him "tens of millions" annually -- to charity. (Simon's marriages to Jennifer Tilly and Playboy Playmate Jami Ferrell were childless, or child-free, depending on your point of view.) "I think it's really nice for him that he's doing it now and he gets to see the results of his philanthropy," says Tilly. "He really does have a passion to survive, and the longer he's on the earth, the more good work he can do." On July 1, Simon spoke frankly to THR about what goes on in the mind of someone who has much to give but not a lot of time to give it.

Wagner's 200th Anniversary

Bayreuth

The sometimes staid audience for the annual Wagner festival in the Bavarian opera house he built was bracing this week for a new production of his mythic "Ring" cycle inspired by American TV, Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the pursuit of oil.

For a new production for the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth, Berlin theatre director Frank Castorf said "Rheingold", the first in the four-opera cycle, was set in Texas and opened at a motel on Route 66 - the road that snakes through America.

At a press conference on Thursday, with Wagner's great-granddaughters Eva Wagner-Pasquier and Katharina Wagner in attendance, Castorf said he had also drawn inspiration from film director Quentin Tarantino, big American cars and Coca-Cola.

Castorf said he had also incorporated Mount Rushmore, the monument to U.S. presidents in South Dakota, into the production but had replaced their heads with those of Stalin, Lenin, Marx and Mao.

The switch showed the interplay between capitalism and communism and both systems' dependence on oil, he added.

Giant Magnet

A 50-foot wide electromagnet that resembles the glowing flying saucer that took E.T. home stopped pre-dawn traffic along a suburban Chicago interstate Friday as it completed the last leg of its 3,200-mile trip over land and sea to arrive at its new home.

The 50-ton electromagnet is the largest in the world and will help study blazing-fast particles at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, outside Chicago.

Without twisting even an eighth of an inch, the giant magnet was strapped to a specially made 16-axel flatbed truck for its final leg and traveling at a mere 5 to 15 mph. A behemoth bumper sticker informed puzzled onlookers that it was "driving discovery in particle physics."

It started its trip at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York in late June. From there, the massive magnet floated down the East Coast into the Gulf of Mexico - where it outran a tropical depression - then up the Mississippi River to Illinois.

Vegas Casino Expansion

New York-New York

The city known for detonating its past to make way for gleaming new development on the Las Vegas Strip is preparing to push out its Sept. 11 memorial.

The shrine on the Las Vegas Strip sprung up spontaneously under the ersatz skyline of the New York-New York casino in the days after the terrorist attacks. For more than a decade, a rotating collection of first responder T-shirts from across the country, many bearing handwritten notes, has decorated a wrought-iron fence near the faux fireboat below the casinos' 47-story replica of the Empire State Building.

Now, MGM Resorts International is starting a $100 million renovation of the promenade in front of 16 year-old Manhattan-themed casino and the adjoining Monte Carlo. The memorial will have to go.

MGM says it will relocate the shrine, which has remained a heartfelt marker amid the plastic artifice of the desert playland.

Cop Who Pepper-Sprayed Students

John Pike

The former police officer who pepper-sprayed students during an Occupy protest at the University of California, Davis is appealing for worker's compensation, claiming he suffered psychiatric injury from the 2011 confrontation.

John Pike has a settlement conference set for Aug. 13 in Sacramento, according to the state Department of Industrial Relations' website.

Pike was fired in July 2012, eight months after a task force investigation found that his action was unwarranted.

Online videos of him and another officer casually dousing demonstrators with pepper spray went viral, sparking outrage at UC Davis leaders. The images became a rallying symbol for the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Camp Low Country

Girl Scouts

A historic Southern plantation in the United States sold for $2.2 million at auction Friday, giving some financial relief to the strapped local Girl Scout council that has owned and used it as a camp for girls for almost five decades.

The camp in South Carolina is one of dozens of Girl Scout camps in 28 states that have closed, been sold or are for sale as chapters across the United States face financial struggles, according to Save Our Scout Camps, a group fighting efforts to sell camps in Iowa and Illinois.

Charleston businessman Michael Bennett, a hotel and resort developer and contractor with Bennett Hospitality and Bennett Hofford Construction Company, made the winning offer among about a dozen interested bidders in an auction on the plantation grounds.

Camp Low Country sits on 152 acres of the former Richmond Plantation, a sprawling 18th- and 19th-century rice plantation.

Slams Stevie Wonder

Nugent

Add Ted Nugent (R-Draft Dodger) to the list of musicians who are distancing themselves from Stevie Wonder's boycott of Florida.

"Wango Tango" rocker, king of the asshats and outspoken conservative Nugent tore into Wonder's boycott of Florida over that state's controversial "Stand Your Ground" laws during an interview with Massachusetts radio station WXBR on Wednesday.

During an impassioned tirade, Nugent accused Wonder of focusing on the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin while ignoring black-on-black violence.

Many nasty words were hurled by Nugent in reference to Wonder's boycott. "Braindead." "Numbnuts." And, perhaps worst of all, "soulless."

He didn't have very nice things to say about Martin, either, characterizing the slain youth as "dope-smoking" and a "hoodlum."

Gold Rush Era Boat Unearthed

San Francisco

Construction workers digging beneath the streets of downtown San Francisco have uncovered a nearly intact boat believed to be from the Gold Rush era in the mid-19th century, officials said on Thursday.

The 23-foot (7-metre) wooden vessel was unearthed earlier this week as crews shoveled beneath the roadway of Folsom Street in the city's South of Market district to prepare for the development of residential towers.

After workers noticed the boat's outline, they dug around it by hand to minimize damage, and a conservationist was called in for further evaluation, said Lynn Cullivan, management assistant at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

It is not uncommon to find pieces of ships buried below street level in San Francisco, but it is extremely rare to find a boat in as good shape as this one, he said.

In Memory

Leon Ferrari

Argentines are mourning the death of world-renowned artist and human rights activist Leon Ferrari, known for works challenging dictators and bishops and a world at war.

The 92-year-old Ferrari was buried Friday in his native Buenos Aires, where he did his most provocative work. His most memorable piece may be a Christ figure crucified on the wings of a U.S. jet fighter during the Vietnam War. Later, his colleges mixed images of Adolph Hitler and Argentina's military junta with figures from the Roman Catholic Church.

The Buenos Aires archbishop who is now Pope Francis called Ferrari a blasphemer after he put statues of the Virgin in a blender, little saints in baby bottles, and Christ figures in a toaster to criticize how religion is fed to the masses.
