In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Cracked a molar Thursday, had a root canal Friday. Long time ago I bit a steering wheel & ended up having 4 root canals in one day. The dentist thought I was nuts when I gave him my camera & asked him to take pictures, but he complied. Days like this I pull those pictures out.

Jet Blue, a fairly new airline that flies out of Long Beach & to just a few destinations - just started a Las Vegas leg and have dropped the price to $19 one/way!. The tickets must be purchased by 15 August, to be used before mid-November, and purchase must be made online. Southwest is matching their price. Round-trip to Las Vegas for less than $40! Really a good time to look into that plane ticket to Las Vegas.

Christopher Hitchens seemed to hop the fence (again) tonight on Dennis Miller. Made a comment about a Bunnypants quote that claimed that the 'bad' CEO's were only 1% of them. But, since it's the only culture Bunnypants has known...''
Dennis' body language was pretty uptight. LOL
Then, Hitch followed with the comment 'They still want your social security money, too'. Dennis, having lost 2 jobs this year, did not seem happy with the comment.
If you have HBO, it might be worth a watch on the rerunning.
Next week, Dennis has a guest I've yet to hear anyone, outside of Arkansas or Pepperdine-ish circles, clamor for - Asa Hutchinson.

Tonight, Saturday, CBS has 'Big Brother 3', then reruns of 'The District' and 'The Agency'.

NBC has the movie 'Daylight' and then follows with a fresh 'She Spies', which last week looked like a lot of fun - a comic book with smart/hot babes, come to life.
'SNL' offers a compilation show featuring Mike Myers'.

ABC has the James Bond movie 'Live And Let Die', #8 in the series.

The WB has the movie 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' (the original one with Kristy Swanson).

Faux has 2 reruns of 'Cops' and then 'America's Most Wanted'.

UPN has reruns of 'The Hughleys', 'One On One', 'The Parkers', and 'Girlfriends'.

'Rocky Horror Picture Show' shows up again on AMC.

TBS has a couple of John Wayne movies - 'Chisum' and 'McLintock!' (which hasn't been shown in a while).

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Taking Break From Ozzfest

Ozzy

British rocker Ozzy Osbourne said on Friday he is taking a three-week break from headlining his annual Ozzfest concert tour to be with his wife, Sharon, while she begins chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

The lead singer for heavy metal group Black Sabbath will jump off the Ozzfest circuit following Sunday's show in Atlanta and plans to rejoin the tour in Denver on Aug. 22, according to a statement.

During Osbourne's absence, the band System Of A Down will move into the headlining slot on the main stage of what has become one of the marquee rock tours of the summer.

"This has been one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, and I'm hoping that my fans will understand," Osbourne said. "Ozzfest must continue with or without me since it's Sharon's baby. I want to thank all the bands on Ozzfest and my crew for all their love and support, especially System Of A Down."

A spokeswoman for MTV, a unit of Viacom Inc., said on Friday that plans were still in the works to bring the cable music channel's top-rated show back for a second season in the fall.

But she added, "Our primary concern is for Sharon's well-being, and we're going to take it one step at a time."

Hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

Sen. John McCain

"Saturday Night Live" is harking back to its rebel roots, booking Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) as a guest host next season.

The former presidential candidate, prisoner of war and continued thorn in the side of President George W. Bush will appear on "SNL" Oct. 12, the second episode of the show's 28th season. Faith Hill is the scheduled musical guest.

While numerous politicos have dropped by "SNL" over the years, the few who've hosted the show have tended to be populist figures like McCain.

Former Gotham Mayor Rudolph Giuliani hosted the laffer in 1997, following in the footsteps of GOP presidential candidate Steve Forbes (1996), Ed Koch (1983), Ralph Nader (1977) and Gerald Ford press secretary Ron Nessen (1976).

McCain told Daily Variety he "immediately said yes" when "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels asked him to host and that he was honored to be called upon.

"I'm a little nervous," McCain said. "Some say there's a fine line between political theater and theater. But it's going to be fun."

It's a good bet "SNL" will fully exploit McCain's still-sticky relationship with resident Bush. Indeed, McCain will be one of the first "SNL" hosts to interact with the show's new George W. Bush -- whoever that may be.

Sued Over Show Idea

'The Osbournes'

A Los Angeles-based producer has sued Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, claiming that the couple stole his idea for their MTV hit "The Osbournes."

In the suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, plaintiff Gary Binkow says he met repeatedly with the couple and executives from Miramax TV in 1999-2000 to discuss "a real-life docu-sitcom" about the aging rocker and his family.

The court papers include what Binkow says is a copy of his original treatment of the proposed series from January 2000, registered with the Writers Guild of America. The document says the show "will showcase the trials and tribulations of real-life rock star Ozzy Osbourne" and specifies that "the audience shouldn't really know if the show is scripted or not."

Binkow is executive producer of "Neverland," a feature starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet that is being shot in London.

Black Sabbath Songs Recorded in Latin

Rondellus & 'Sabbatum'

An Estonian record company has released an album of Black Sabbath songs played by a quintet specializing in music from the Middle Ages and singing in the main literary language of that era, Latin.

"If you take away the massive wall of sound from many Sabbath songs, what you have is pure 14th century music," producer Mihkel Raud claimed Friday. "Really."

The 12-track album — called "Sabbatum," Latin for "sabbath" — includes "Wheels of Confusion" ("Rotae Confusionis") and "War Pigs" ("Verres Militares") in slow, minimalist versions that wouldn't seem out of place at mass in the Sistine Chapel.

Some 1,200 CDs have been sold, mainly to U.S. buyers via the Internet since the album was released in March, Raud said. He considers any sales over 10,000 a big success for his tiny, two-year-old Beg the Bug Records.

Raud wooed the music group Rondellus, whose three previous albums were of mainstream sacred music, to arrange and record the Black Sabbath tunes. He described ensemble members as "open-minded" and "enthusiastic," though he decided not to ask them to record Black Sabbath songs referring directly to the devil.

"I felt that asking them to sing, 'My name is Lucifer, please take my hand' would have been too much," he said.

Music publishers who owned the rights to Black Sabbath songs granted permission for them to be recorded by Raud, he said.

La Jolla Cove

Squid!

Thousands of dead jumbo squid cover the beach at La Jolla Cove in La Jolla, California about 15 miles north of San Diego, July 26, 2002. Scientists believe the squid were following prey (possibly grunion, a small fish) and washed ashore alive but were unable to get back into the water and died. City work crews were called to help remove nine tons of dead squid.

Middle Finger Not Meant For Fans

Britney Spears

Pop diva Britney Spears, under fire for making an obscene gesture shortly after arriving in Mexico City for the last stop on her world tour, said on Friday she was only reacting to intrusive paparazzi.

Spears was caught by cameras extending her middle finger in a universally recognized gesture on Tuesday night as she left the airport in Toluca, some 40 miles from Mexico City.

"I'm human too. I get mad like everyone else," Spears told reporters, saying photographers and camera crews were driving recklessly around her vehicle, nearly causing a wreck as she left the airport.

Snarky Gossip

Sir Ben

Cast and crew on the set of "Suspect Zero" currently shooting in New Mexico are smirking behind the back of their star. It seems that bald Ben Kingsley insists that everyone call him "Sir," in keeping with his British honor. Some of the crew have worked with other British knights like Sir Anthony Hopkins, who won't answer to anything more formal than "Tony." It's the same on the set of Mike Nichols' "Angels in America," now filming in Astoria for HBO, where Sir Michael Gambon threatened actual violence to anyone who used his title.

Denver Program

'John's TV'

There are 11 men who probably never wanted to get their 15 minutes of fame this way. They were the first guests on "John's TV."

The program premiered on the city's cable access channel Thursday. It included a slide show of men convicted of soliciting prostitution with their names shown below their photos. The images are also displayed on the city's Web site.

A Denver cop standing by his cruiser warns rather ominously that anyone hiring a hooker may be arrested.

The idea for using publicity as a deterrent started with the publication of photos in newspapers. Several other cities have already started TV shows: "BUSTED" in Orlando, Fla.; "Shame TV" in Charlotte, N.C.; and in Calgary, Alberta, the "Calgary Ho Down."

Andrew Hudson, spokesman for Mayor Wellington Webb, said: "When we heard the horror stories from the community — finding condoms in back yards, sex in the alleys, children seeing people having sex in cars, we knew we had to do something."

He said the city decided not to show the photos of the prostitutes because their situation is already desperate enough, and "we don't want to advertise.

Rocking with Revamping

VH1

Newly installed VH1 toppers Brian Graden and Christina Norman are moving quickly to put their stamp on the struggling music cable network, greenlighting an aggressive fall slate of series and specials aimed at building on the channel's still-strong retro music brand.

VH1 is also beefing up its "Movies That Rock" franchise, snagging the broadcast premiere of the Oscar-winning "Moulin Rouge" and several other theatricals. And rather than simply repurposing other networks' music specials, Graden wants VH1 to sign A-level talent for original concert specials.

Among the new series and specials that'll hit VH1 over the next six months are the following:

= "Rock the House": a weekly half-hour series in which a music fan gets a surprise visit from a fave rock star who, a la TLC's "Trading Spaces," redecorates the fan's house or room. It is set to bow in October.

= "Music Behind Bars": the documentary reality series will explore the lives and crimes of jailhouse rockers by focusing on a different prison band each week. It is set to bow Nov. 1.

= "Liza & David": Minnelli and new hubby Gest pitched the idea for this show themselves, according to Graden, and will serve as exec producers of the project, which will begin airing as a weekly series in October. VH1 has ordered 10 episodes.

= "Camp Chaos": the weekly half-hour animated comedy, based on the Web site of the same name, will spoof pop music culture via a series of themed sketches. It's expected to premiere sometime this fall or winter.

= "I Love the '80s": Based on the BBC format, each hourlong episode will review the seminal pop culture events of a given year from the 1980s. VH1 has ordered 10 episodes of the project, which will air as part of an '80s-themed week of programming Dec. 9-13.

On other programming fronts, Norman has ordered full seasons of the before-they-were stars series "Driven" and the newsmagazine "All Access," while greenlighting the William Shatner-hosted "One-Hit Wonders" as a weekly series.

Specials slated for fall and winter include the two-hour teen idol history "Bubblegum Babylon" and three five-hour miniseries: the TV Guide-produced "100 Moments that Rocked the Tube"; "The 100 Greatest Love Songs," narrated by Barry White; and "The 100 Sexiest Artists."

The latter project rolls out Sept. 23-27; "Love Songs" is set for Nov. 11-15; and "100 Moments that Rocked the Tube" will bow in January.

In The Bay Area This Weekend

Ladyfest

More grass-roots than Lollapalooza, more political than Lilith Fair, Ladyfest is a summer festival produced entirely by people proud that their styles of feminism, art and music cannot be easily categorized — or commercialized.

Appearing in more than a half-dozen cities around the world this year despite no major corporate sponsorship, Ladyfests have created havens for female artists and organizers who feel excluded from male-dominated pop culture.

Ladyfest organizers have invited "pro-woman people" of all genders, ages, shapes and sizes — but the event also has drawn some backlash.

The first Ladyfest came out of a reunion of people from the 1990s Riot Grrrl movement of punk rock feminists. There hasn't been another event in Olympia since, but that was the point — organizers hoped others would take the idea and run with it.

In 2001, events emerged in Chicago, New York, Bloomington, Ind., and Glasgow, Scotland. This year has seen festivals in Lansing, Mich., and Ontario, Canada, with more events scheduled for Washington, D.C., Amsterdam, London, Atlanta, among other cities.

Divorce Negotiated

Phyllis & Sumner Redstone

Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone, whose marital squabbles raised investor eyebrows during negotiations to buy television network CBS Inc., was granted a divorce on Friday from his wife of more than 50 years.

Sumner Redstone, 79, will retain control of cinema chain National Amusements Inc. and Viacom Inc., the owner of the CBS television network and cable networks such as MTV and Nickelodeon, according to a statement.

Redstone owns 93.7 million Viacom Class A shares, or 68 percent, according to the company's most recent proxy statement. The shares, which closed at $34.32 on Friday, are worth about $3.2 billion. But at the time of the divorce filing were worth about $6 billion, proxy statements show.

Their divorce is the latest in a string of breakups among some of America's best known corporate chieftains.

Earlier this year, the wife of former General Electric Corp. chairman Jack Welch filed for divorce when she learned about his romantic involvement with a journalist.

In his book, Redstone said his wife had threatened to divorce him for infidelity several times.

Too Many ''Specials''?

9/11/02

CBS "60 Minutes II" correspondent Scott Pelley landed a big exclusive when resident Bush agreed to an interview about the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The interview will be shown during the network's Sept. 11 prime-time coverage, and the White House says it's the only interview the president is giving to mark the anniversary.

The White House saw it as an opportunity for reflection in a serious broadcast, while spreading access around (since the president spoke earlier this year to NBC's Tom Brokaw and ABC's Claire Shipman).

CBS and ABC are devoting all of their prime-time air Sept. 11 to news coverage of the anniversary. NBC is offering a mixture of news and a Kennedy Center concert that will feature an appearance by first lady Laura Bush.

In Memory

Richard Liddicoat

Richard T. Liddicoat, creator of the global standard in diamond grading and a leading advocate of gemological education, is dead. He was 84.

Liddicoat died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday following a long illness. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Until Liddicoat developed the International Diamond Grading System in 1953, a number of differing methods were used to evaluate gems. His approach became the industry standard with the simplicity and uniformity of judging diamonds by their cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

The lifetime board chairman and former president of the Carlsbad-based nonprofit Gemological Institute of America wrote a trio of comprehensive books - "The Handbook of Gem Identification," "The Diamond Dictionary" and "The Jeweler's Manual."

Deemed by many the "father of modern gemology," Liddicoat was pivotal in bringing credibility to a profession that had long rejected formal education or uniformity, said wholesale jeweler Michael Kazanjian, who served on the Gemological Institute board of governors and knew Liddicoat for 40 years.

"If anyone could be called the dean of the jewelry industry in very loving and genuine terms of respect and endearment, it would be this man," Kazanjian said.

Liddicoat edited the professional journal Gems & Gemology from 1952 until his death. He was instrumental in the growth of the gem collection of the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum and eventually had a gem species named for him.

The National Museum of Natural History in 1977 dubbed a newly discovered species of tourmaline Liddicoatite in honor of his contributions to gemological knowledge and education.
