Paul Krugman: Pathos of the Plutocrat (Creators Syndicate)
"Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me." So wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald - and he didn't just mean that they have more money. What he meant instead, at least in part, was that many of the very rich expect a level of deference that the rest of us never experience and are deeply distressed when they don't get the special treatment they consider their birthright; their wealth "makes them soft where we are hard."
Froma Harrop: Are Some Republicans Ready to Deal on Taxes? (Creators Syndicate)
We are nearing the anniversary of last summer's disgraceful standoff over raising the country's debt limit. Having routinely hiked the debt limit in the George W. Bush era and before, Republicans decided to play games with America's credit rating by holding up approval. They even rejected an earlier deal made with Democrats to cut $3 trillion in spending in return for $1 trillion in tax revenues, mainly from closing loopholes. That would have been $4 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years.
Charlie Jane Anders: The Coolest New Teen Hero We've Seen in Ages (io9)
At first glance, 'Team Human' by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan looks like a 'Twilight' spoof, or rather a funny antidote to Twi-mania. There's the title, plus the whole concept: A teenage girl who tries to keep her best friend from dating the sexy but uptight vampire who comes to her high school.

Lisa & Oliver Wendell Douglas (Green Acres)

Green Acres (1965-71) was about a wealthy New York City couple, lawyer Oliver Wendell Douglas (Eddie Albert) and his diamond-clad wife, Lisa (Eva Gabor), who give up their Park Avenue penthouse for a run-down farm, "The Old Haney Place".
Source
Baron Dave ("We can't afford to shop at any store that has a philosophy." -- Marge, The Simpsons) was first, and correct, with:
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas.
Mr. Haney, based not-so-loosely on Elvis Presley's manager Col. Tom Parker, was played to the hilt by Pat Butram. I remember Green Acres very fondly, though I haven't actually seen one in years. Surreal in a different way than The Monkees. Whee!

Did anyone hate those moronically stupid TV shows as much as I did? You know Hillbillies, Petticoats and Hootenannies. Too bad, Eddie was a good actor. Remember Edy Williams?
Jim from CA, retired to ID, answered:

show is called Green Acres.

Our cabin at the lake has a similar wiring system to the old Haney place,
in that you can't
run the coffemaker, electric griddle and microwave at the same time
without throwing
a breaker. But if you unplug the refrigerator you can. I thought about
instituting the same system
assigning values to electrical appliances that Oliver came up with, but
everyone just gave me
that look of "what are you talking about?" Oh well....

A Moscow court on Friday launched the trial of three feminist rockers who face a possible seven years in prison for performing a "punk prayer" against Vladimir Putin from the pulpit of Russia's largest cathedral.
The case of the three members of the band Pussy Riot has deeply divided Russia, pitting advocates of openness against the forces of order and the powerful Russian Orthodox Church. The three had been held in jail for more than four months without a single court hearing.
The February stunt, two weeks before the election that returned Putin to the presidency, was designed to offend. Five members of Pussy Riot - wearing brightly colored balaclavas and miniskirts - briefly took over the pulpit at Christ The Savior Cathedral, chanting "Mother Mary, drive Putin away" and high-kicking cancan-style.
What happened after security guards seized the five was extraordinary - even for a country whose leaders have shown little patience for protest. Three of the band members, two of whom have young children, were thrown into jail and face charges of hooliganism that could bring them seven years if convicted.
Supporters of the three say their jailing and charges are a draconian demonstration of how the church holds heavy sway in the government.

Director Ron Howard will have one of the best seats at this year's Brickyard 400.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials announced Friday that the Oscar-winning director would lead the field before the July 29 race at the storied 2.5-mile track.
Howard won Academy Awards for best director and best picture in 2001 for "A Beautiful Mind." His latest project is titled "Rush" and depicts the Grand Prix clashes between Englishman James Hunt and Austrian Niki Lauda.
Speedway President Jeff Belskus says Howard has immersed himself in motorsports culture while filming "Rush" and is "an ideal person to pace the field."
"Tall and tan and young and lovely..." You've heard of her. The Girl From Ipanema.
You might have come across the bossa nova classic while on hold on the phone, during a long elevator ride, or in a cafe in Beirut or Bangkok - but you've heard it. It's been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Amy Winehouse, and survived bad lounge singers and Muzak incarnations to become, according to Performing Songwriter magazine, the second most recorded song in the world.
The quintessential bossa nova tune, inspired by a young woman who passed the songwriters in a beachside bar on her way to the sea, introduced Rio de Janeiro to the world. Now, it's turning 50, and to its legions of fans, the decades have only heightened its allure, adding a wash of nostalgia to this hymn to passing youth and beauty.
This girl who "swings so cool and sways so gently" first stepped out in public on August 1962, in a cramped Copacabana nightclub.
On stage together, for the first and only time, were the architects of bossa nova: Tom Jobim on piano and Joao Gilberto on guitar, with help from the poet Vinicius de Moraes, who gave "The Girl" her lyrics. Also performing was the vocal group Os Cariocas.

Poland plans to auction off part of a photographic collection that includes hundreds of photographs of Marilyn Monroe.
The collection includes close to 4,000 photographs taken by the late celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene. Some are well-known images, but Polish officials say they believe the collection might contain some previously unpublished works.
The photos ended up in Poland's possession as the result of a complex embezzlement scandal that shook the country in the early 1990s. A Chicago businessman accused of cheating Poland out of millions of dollars gave the collection to Poland in partial repayment for the government's loss.
The Polish official in charge of cleaning up the lingering mess from the corruption affair, Marta Maciazek, said the photographic collection is valued at $680,000. She said some of the photos will go on exhibition soon and then will be put up for sale.
A judge refused to dismiss charges Friday against a group accused of burglarizing celebrities' homes based on an officer's paid work on a film about the case, but called the investigator's actions "stupid" and a gift for defense attorneys.
An attorney for Roy Lopez Jr., who is charged with burglarizing Paris Hilton's home, argued the $12,500 paid to the lead investigator for work on Sofia Coppola's upcoming film on the case was outrageous conduct that justified a dismissal.
Superior Court Judge Larry P. Fidler disagreed during Friday's hearing, but criticized Los Angeles Police Officer Brett Goodkin's work on "The Bling Ring."
"His judgment is as poor as it gets," Fidler said, adding that he would allow defense attorneys for three remaining defendants to extensively question him about his credibility during trial.
"It's not outrageous. It's not flagrant. It's not egregious," Fidler said. "It's stupid. You can have a field day with him."

A prominent Republican fundraiser has been arrested on numerous rape charges in Salt Lake City.
Gregory Nathan Peterson, an active fundraiser for conservative politicians in Utah, was charged Wednesday with a number of violent crimes, including 21 charges of rape, forcible sexual abuse and battery, two charges of aggravated kidnapping, one charge of assault and one charge of felony burglary, court documents reveal.
The charges stem from alleged attacks on four women between March 2011 and April 2012. Two of the alleged attacks occurred at the cabin where Peterson, 37, held political fundraisers.
Peterson has been active in fundraising for Utah Republican candidates for years, including Sens. Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee, Gov. Gary Herbert, U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz and others, The Salt Lake Tribune reports. He was listed as an event chair for a 2007 Mitt Romney campaign event, held at the Romneys' Utah home, and has donated thousands of dollars to Romney's campaign. Peterson is a Nebraska native, and Brigham Young University alum, ABC News affiliate ABC4 reports. He currently owns and operates Peterson Wealth Management.
The cabin where the alleged rapes took place was the site of the Rocky Mountain Conservatives Convention and Barbeque, which Peterson called the "CPAC of the West," according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Last year, the second year of the event, nearly 300 people attended.

Fender Musical Instruments Corp., which produced guitars strummed by the likes of Buddy Holly and Eric Clapton and famously set on fire by Jimi Hendrix, said late Thursday that it dropped its plans for an initial public offering.
The news came amid a handful of successful IPOs, prompting speculation about the reasoning behind Fender's decision.
Fender CEO Larry Thomas said current market conditions and Europe's ongoing economic woes wouldn't support an IPO that values the company appropriately.
Industry observers said that while there may be some truth to that, Fender's reasons may have more to do with the different growth prospects between Fender and the technology companies that have recently gone public than the current IPO environment.

Scientists have finally cracked a decades-old spaceflight riddle, figuring out why NASA's Pioneer 10 and 11 probes began to slow mysteriously as they sped far from the sun.
The cause of the so-called "Pioneer Anomaly," it turns out, is heat coming from the electrical current flowing through the probes' instrument and power systems. This heat pushed back on the spacecraft, causing them to decelerate slightly, according to a new study.
In the early 1980s, mission scientists noticed that the spacecraft were slowing down unexpectedly. But they dismissed this as a transient phenomenon resulting from dribbles of propellant left in the probes' lines, researchers said.
The issue didn't go away, however. In 1998, when Pioneer 10 and 11 were more than 8 billion miles (13 billion km) from the sun, a team of researchers calculated that the spacecraft were declerating at a rate of about 300 inches per day squared (0.9 nanometers per second squared).
The scientists couldn't explain the slight slowdown, so they raised the possibility that some new type of physics that contradicted Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity may be responsible.

A man known for his enormous penis was stopped by security at San Francisco International Airport and questioned about the bulge in his pants, he was reported as saying Thursday.
Jonah Falcon, 41, has an organ which is 9.5 inches long when flaccid and 13 inches (33 centimeters) erect, according to Rolling Stone magazine. He has featured in a number of documentaries about the world's biggest penises.
He was returning to New York from San Francisco on July 9 when he was stopped, after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents saw a bulge hanging down over his left upper thigh.
"They wanted to know if I had something in my pockets, and when I said no, they asked if I had some sort of growth," he said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
"What was the worst that was going to happen? I was going to have to whip it out for them? I'm used to that. Sometimes when people ask me about it, if I'm feeling up to it, I'll just show them."
