'Dangerous Media Tour'

Dangerous Media Tour

Lost Film Fest

Lost Film Fest / Dangerous Media Tour

Dangerous Media Tour consists of one part film and two parts spoken word. Lost Film Festival Director Scott Beibin narrates a series of shorts, while authors Carissa Van Den Berk Clark (Yours For the Revolution), and "Mack" the author of Evasion read from their respective novels.

Their work provides examples of not-so-popular viewpoints under post 9-11 paranoia, and expresses a rich tapestry of other approaches to solving global conflicts.

This is an exciting program that provides much needed relief from the mind numbing and intellectually damaging drivel that CNN and Hollywood vomit into our collective consciousness. DIGITAL REVOLUTION NOW! WE ARE THE MEDIA MAKERS..WE ARE THE DREAMERS OF THE DREAM."

Thanks, Lorena. Sounds pretty interesting.

Anybody Remember 'Poltergeist'?

WTF?

Developer Leo Bruso walks down into early 19th century graves that were excavated on a tract of land which he plans on developing into 23 muti-million dollar homes in Fort Washington, Md. Friday morning, June 14, 2002. For Bruso, the 23-acre plot of hills that leads down to the Potomac River is an ideal spot for the homes, but to neighbors, it's one of the county's prized historic sites, complete with slave burial grounds, the relics of an American Indian village and graves from a Colonial plantation family.

Re: Hunter S. Thompson

I remember Bartcop wrote a story a little while ago concerning Hunter Thompson being plagiarized and it was followed up by these NY Post Stories:

HST #1

HST #2

If memory serves correctly, the name of the culprit was Asterisk.

Just wanted to know if you had any more of a detailed scoop on how this story is continuing to unfold:

"The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have recently revealed that Asterisk is non other than Bill Maher, the Politically Incorrect host, or rather Bill Maher's staff writers. But the story gets painstakingly more complicated. Apparently, Jerry Seinfeld has written a book called "Letters from a Nut" under the alias Ted L. Nancy and is collaborating with Bill Maher (AKA Asterisk) on a new television show that combines the mischievous, political and celebrity related antics of both their pseudonyms. Since Hunter S. Thompson seems to have fallen prey to these "hoaxers", and is not known for handling such treatment calmly, we all anxiously await his reaction."

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Was quite the day. Woke to a sick cat...she decorated a couple of rooms with biological deposits. Argh.

The kid looked a little different, too. Seems he was experimenting with his hair & scissors. Said he wanted to make sure there was no hair in his eyes. Nope, not gonna have that problem for a couple of months now.

After supper, another one of the damn cats broke into the female lizard's cage, and don't know if I'm on lizard death-watch, or praying for a miracle. Who knew lizards had red blood?

To Be Knighted

Mick Jagger

Jagger Satisfied with One Knight Stand

Fri Jun 14, 7:18 PM ET

Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, the aging rock 'n' roll rebel renowned for his drug arrests and female conquests, finally got some satisfaction from Britain's establishment on Saturday when he was awarded a knighthood.

"Old Rubber Lips," a boyhood hero of Prime Minister Tony Blair's, won his knighthood "for services to popular music," according to the list of honors published to mark Queen Elizabeth's official birthday.

Jagger joined nearly 1,000 people in the government-compiled honors list. Half of the great, good, famous and unknown recipients were nominated by members of the public.

Jagger said the rest of the band was "really surprised" at news of his knighthood.

Also winning knighthoods on Saturday were playwright Harold Pinter, who penned the brooding dramas "The Birthday Party" and "The Caretaker," and director Jonathan Miller whose recent Mafia version of Verdi's Rigoletto broke new ground for British opera.

More From The AFI Tribute

Tom Hanks

Gore Vidal once said that every time a friend succeeds, "a tiny piece of me dies." Steve Martin expressed a similar sentiment Wednesday night in L.A.as the American Film Institute gave Tom Hanks a lifetime achievement award at the Kodak Theater.

"When I first saw Tom Hanks in a movie, I thought: 'This guy's good. I wish him luck.'

"Then I saw him in 'Big,' and I thought, 'He's got comedy chops. That's fantastic. That's a rare quality.'

"Then in 'Apollo 13,' I saw the brilliance of his dramatic acting and I said to myself, 'M——f——, talk about annoying!' "

Martin added, "When you look at him, you wouldn't think this is one of the greatest actors of our generation. You'd think more, 'Excuse me, what are today's specials?'"

Hanks, who at 45 is the youngest recipient of the AFI award, was honored by Dennis Miller, Sharon Stone, Melissa Etheridge and his pal Steven Spielberg, who was all seriousness about their movie "Saving Private Ryan."

Preparing Bill to Re-Regulate Radio

Russell Feingold

Prompted by growing complaints from recording artists and music fans, a Wisconsin senator is preparing a bill that would impose new restrictions on the recently deregulated radio and concert industries.

Sen. Russell Feingold, a Democrat, said on the Senate floor Thursday that he was alarmed by a wave of consolidation that since 1996 has allowed a handful of companies to buy up a large portion of the nation's radio stations.

Feingold said he would introduce a bill in the next few weeks that would seek to rein in the alleged anti-competitive practices of industry behemoths like Clear Channel Communications Inc., which owns more than 1,200 radio stations as well as the nation's largest concert-promotion company.

"Radio is a public medium and we must ensure that it serves the public good," Feingold said. "The concentration of ownership, both in radio and other facets of the concert industry, has caused great harm to people and businesses that have been involved and concerned about the radio and concert industry for generations," he said.

Feingold said a 1996 law that deregulated many aspects of the radio industry was passed due to the corrupting influence of unregulated soft money, which soon will be outlawed under a campaign-finance law that he sponsored.

Searched Twice During Wisconsin Trip

Al Gore

Midwest Express Airlines boasts the "best care in the air," but Air Force II it ain't.

Private citizen Al Gore learned that last week - not once but twice.

Traveling to Wisconsin, the former vice president was pulled aside for random security screening at Reagan National Airport before boarding the 7:15 p.m. flight to Milwaukee on Friday.

Passengers sharing Flight 406 were startled to hear Gore being told, "Sorry, sir, you have to go through extra screening," and to witness security personnel rifling through his briefcase and suitcase, a witness said.

"You're looking out and seeing Al Gore's unmentionables in his big, carry-on suitcase," said Mark Graul of Green Bay. "You could tell he was thinking, 'This is not happening to me.'

"He did not have a happy look on his face. Basically the whole plane boarded before they got through looking through his stuff.

Gore was en route to Madison to address the Democratic Party of Wisconsin convention Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon, when Gore was leaving Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport, he was taken aside for some extra scrutiny at a Midwest Express gate before boarding a flight to New York, said Gore spokesman Jano Cabrera, who accompanied him during both checks.

"My understanding is he was randomly selected both times," he said. "And both times he was more than happy, as all Americans are in these troubled times, to cooperate."

Pleads Not Guilty

Winona Ryder

Actress Winona Ryder was formally arraigned in court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to charges of shoplifting thousands of dollars worth of designer clothes and accessories from a posh Beverly Hills store.

Ryder, appearing in court with her arm in a sling after injuring her elbow in a scuffle with cameramen last week, entered her plea in a soft voice and was ushered out of court by sheriff's deputies and her lawyer, avoiding the press.

Superior Court Judge Elden Fox on Friday ordered any documents relating to possible alleged previous misdeeds by Ryder to be sealed.

Both the prosecution and the defense have declined all comment on a legal notice filed by the prosecution three weeks ago concerning alleged "prior acts" in the case.

Ryder's lawyer Mark Geragos has accused Saks of targeting the actress because she is a celebrity. He has also accused the District Attorney's office of "having an ax to grind" against Ryder and filed a motion to have the DA recused, or removed from the case.

Toured The Houses Of Parliament

Michael Jackson

U.S. pop singer Michael Jackson gestures as he answers questions from the media on arrival at the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster in central London, June 14, 2002. Photo by Michael Crabtree

American superstar Michael Jackson took a guided tour of Britain's Houses of Parliament on Friday, declaring the gothic palace "a miracle" and gazing in awe at Queen Elizabeth's golden throne.

I want that," the pop legend told his entourage as he admired the throne where Britain's monarch sits once a year to formally open parliament in the ornate House of Lords.

"Can you get it up to the ranch?" one of his assistants asked three burly bodyguards.

Jackson, accompanied by escapologist David Blaine and spoon-bending psychic Uri Geller, was making a whirlwind visit to Westminster on a brief trip to Britain after asking to see the "mother of parliaments."

Jackson and Blaine showed particular interest in the extensive House of Lords library. "Do they have cartoons?" Jackson asked. Blaine asked librarians to track down a copy of a 400-year-old book of magic -- "The Discovery of Witchcraft."

The pop star was puzzled when told not to sit on the green leather benches in the House of Commons where British MPs often gather for marathon debates.

"Why can't one sit there? What's the purpose?" he asked, before briefly settling onto one of the benches to test it. "Are they comfortable after hours and hours?" he asked.

Wedding News

Taylor Hanson

Taylor Hanson, the 19-year-old lead singer and keyboard player of the pop trio Hanson, has married his girlfriend of two years, 18-year-old Natalie Anne Bryant.

Relatives and friends attended the small, private ceremony in Pine Mountain, Ga., on Saturday, the Tulsa World reported.

"Our wedding was exactly how we envisioned it — romantic and intimate, and surrounded by our family and friends," Hanson said in a statement released Thursday to the newspaper. "Natalie and I are looking forward to our life together."

Rumors began circulating early this week on Internet newsgroups after a photo was circulated featuring the bride and groom standing with two others.

Sees Self in Eminem

Randy Newman

Randy Newman has found someone he can identify with — Eminem.

The Oscar-winning composer, inducted Thursday into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, said the rapper is "a great comic artist."

Eminem has been criticized for using slurs against gays and women, and for the violent imagery of his lyrics. But Newman says it's just music.

"He is not serious ... he's a comic artist. And since that's essentially what I am, he's a kindred spirit in some kind of way," the 58-year-old said.

"We both want to kill our wives and cut up our mothers," he joked.

Honeymooning in Seychelles

The McCartneys

Former Beatle Paul McCartney and his new bride, Heather Mills, were spending their honeymoon Friday in the Seychelles, state-run radio said, and were believed to be staying on one of the Indian Ocean archipelago's private islands.

Their exact location has not been disclosed, but there are more than a dozen privately owned islands with luxury homes that are popular with the very rich. The most exclusive and private resort is on Fregate Island, a wild, tropical island that's been described as a "Swiss Family Robinson Win the Lottery" experience.

Fregate is popular among bird watchers and is home to one of the world's rarest beetles, the giant tenebroid beetle. The island is popular with celebrities because it's extremely difficult to reach and surrounded by dangerous rocks, reefs and seas that keep uninvited boats well away.

Tour operators and hotel staffs in the Seychelles also are famous for their discretion; none would confirm or deny whether McCartney and his bride were there.

Sued for Alleged Price Gouging

Clear Channel

A Chicago-area woman on Friday sued Clear Channel Communications for allegedly gouging music concert ticket buyers with inflated prices as the multimedia entertainment company built a monopolistic empire.

The antitrust lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of individuals who bought tickets to any live rock concert in the United States from Clear Channel and its affiliates and subsidiaries from Jan. 1, 1997 through the present. The suit, which was filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks unspecified damages.

The plaintiff Melinda Heerwagen, of Cook County, Illinois, alleged that the sharp increases in ticket prices are unrelated to inflation. The suit states that from 1991 to 1996, concert ticket prices rose by 21 percent while the Consumer Price Index shows that all prices grew by 15 percent.

"Yet, in the last five years, during the time when Clear Channel's consolidation of the industry and anticompetitive practices were implemented, concert ticket prices ballooned by 61 percent while the Consumer Price Index increased by just 13 percent," the suit said.

'The Young and the Restless'

Todd Bridges

Actor Todd Bridges' life has often resembled a daytime drama -- so it's somehow appropriate that he's about to appear in an actual soap.

The former "Diff'rent Strokes" star has snagged a recurring role on CBS' "The Young and the Restless," which just marked its 700th week as TV's most-watched daytime drama. He will play Juice, a character "Y&R" executive producer David Shaughnessy describes as "a real out-and-out bad guy ...bent on revenge."

Bridges, 37, taped his episodes of "Y&R" last week and will make his first appearance on the soap July 12.

Gets Own Museum

Spam

Depending on who's eating it, Spam is either a slice of post-war Americana or a slice of who knows what.

Whatever it is, the canned convenience food now has its own museum.

"All (you've) got to say is Spam and you've got a discussion," said Nancy Barker of Menasha, Wis., emerging from the Spam Museum Friday with a handful of memorabilia. "Of course, there's also quite a lot of jokes."

For 66 years this southern Minnesota town of 22,000 has been known affectionately, or derisively, as Spamtown.

Visitors can take a Spam exam or can their own Spam (not the real stuff). There's also a radio station - KSpam - and a video screen that shows classic Monty Python skits slamming Spam.

The museum, which is free, has drawn 39,000 visitors since it opened, and the number is expected to double this weekend.
