Kick off the Summer with searing discussion.
An immigration bill only Kafka would love, the Democrats pulling of the
deadline, Bush's intransigence on the veto if a deadline for withdrawal
present, and Monica Goodling's testimony about Attorney General Alberto
Gonzalez and the broken Department of (In)Justice.
All that and Memorial Day thoughts about the troops and the nature of war.
The Irascible Professor: Ethically Challenged and Tone Deaf in the CSU (irascibleprofessor.com)
Several months ago -- July 21, 2006 to be exact -- the Irascible Professor posted a commentary outlining questionable compensation practices for high-ranking officials in the California State University System. These practices have been employed by the system's Chancellor, Charlie Reed, to grant millions of dollars in extra compensation to campus presidents and to cronies of Reed at the system's headquarters in Long Beach upon their retirement or departure from the system. These six-figure payouts for "consulting" work or "special projects" ...

Former US vice president Al Gore on Friday criticized the "trivialities and nonsense" of celebrity gossip in the media and called on people to focus instead on issues like Iraq and climate change.
Gore, who is promoting his new book "The Assault on Reason," made the comments at a book signing in New York, where he was treated to a rock star reception by more than 1,300 cheering and screaming fans.
"What is it about our collective decision-making process that has led us to this state of affairs where we spend much more time in the public forum talking about -- or receiving information about -- Britney Spears shaving her head or Paris Hilton going to jail?" Gore asked.
He lamented what he described as the "destruction of the boundary between news and entertainment" and said the United States was "vulnerable as a democracy to mass and continuing distraction."

"I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to," Paul Newman, 82, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday. "You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that's pretty much a closed book for me."
Newman, star of films such as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," added: "I've been doing it for 50 years. That's enough."
He has other plates spinning. Newman plans to focus on the Dressing Room, his new organic restaurant in Westport, Conn., and his Hole in the Wall Gang camps for critically ill children.
His Newman's Own brand of dressings, pasta sauces, popcorn and salsa has raised more than $200 million for charities.

Rosie O'Donnell has fought her last fight at `The View.' ABC said Friday she won't be back on the show following her angry confrontation with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Wednesday.
O'Donnell asked for, and received, an early exit from her contract. She was due to leave "The View" in mid-June.
"Rosie contributed to one of our most exciting and successful years at `The View,'" show creator Barbara Walters said lied. "I am most appreciative. Our close and affectionate relationship will not change."
Don't plan on strolling down the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame the next time you're in his West Texas birthplace. The City Council has rescinded a 1995 resolution that created the name.
The vote came Thursday after Civic Lubbock Inc, a nonprofit group created by the city in 1956, faced a dispute with Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly, over payment for the use of the rocker's name at the Walk of Fame and Buddy Holly Terrace.
The Walk of Fame and Buddy Holly Terrace will now be known as the West Texas Hall of Fame and West Texas Terrace.

Marion Morrison was just 4 years old the last time he lived in Winterset, but this picturesque community plans a rousing celebration this weekend for what would have been his 100th birthday.
A nation of moviegoers came to know Morrison as John Wayne. To the townspeople here, the Duke's on-screen all-American ethos reflects Winterset's wholesome, small-town feel.
Thousands are expected to pour into town for the festivities and to see the tiny white clapboard house where the Hollywood legend was born on May 26, 1907. Centennial organizers have received RSVPs from as far away as Norway and Denmark.
Ty Pennington, host of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," pleaded no contest Friday in a misdemeanor drunken driving case.
Pennington, 42, had been charged with two misdemeanor counts - driving with a blood-alcohol level above the 0.08 percent limit and driving under the influence of alcohol.
He pleaded no contest to the first count and the other count was dismissed, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney's office. Mateljan said it was a normal disposition for a first offense.
A judge placed Pennington on three years' probation, restricted his driving privileges for 90 days and ordered him to participate in a 90-day alcohol program and attend a Mothers Against Drunk Drivers meeting, Mateljan said.

Prosecutors declined Friday to charge Ryan O'Neal with assault with a deadly weapon for firing a gun during a brawl with his older son earlier this year.
There was insufficient evidence "to prove this case to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt," said a report from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.
O'Neal, 66, was arrested at his Malibu home Feb. 3 for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was freed on a $50,000 bond.
The actor has said he fired a warning shot to scare his 42-year-old son, Griffin O'Neal, who had attacked him with a fireplace poker.

Myanmar's military government on Friday extended the house arrest of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi for another year, defying an outpouring of international appeals for the Nobel Peace Prize winner's freedom.
The 60-year-old Suu Kyi has spent more than 11 of the past 17 years in detention. She has been continually detained for the past four years, spending most of it confined to her residence in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city.
Her current one-year detention order was due to expire Sunday and the extension had been widely expected despite calls by international groups and world leaders for Suu Kyi's freedom.

For months, the city's most famous reptile eluded paparazzi and faithful fans who gathered at the edge of a park lake to catch a glimpse of the A-list alligator. But when "Reggie" decided to come out, the gator did it in true Hollywood style: Swarmed by fans and photographers as it sunned by the water, the reptile was whisked away with a police escort as TV helicopters gave chase and broadcast live footage of the cagey critter's freeway journey to the zoo.
"We were petting him, talking to him," said City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, whose district includes the park. "I feel like I know him because I've invested a lot of time and energy in him."
The 6 1/2-foot alligator believed to be Reggie, who lurked in Harbor Regional Park's Lake Machado for two years, was wrestled into captivity Thursday. The wily beast became a celebrity as it eluded would-be wranglers and managed to disappear for 18 months until it recently resurfaced.
