Eddie Deezen: Why Did Women Start Wearing Makeup? (Guardian)
Call it vanity, if you must, but spending quality time in front of a mirror is a daily ritual millions of women can't do without, whether they're preparing for an average day at work, a big event, or a date with that special someone. It all goes back to the ancient Egyptians, who were the first women to wear makeup.
The character of KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) in the original Knight Rider series was physically embodied as a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am with numerous special features such as Turbo Boost (which allowed quick bursts of speed or jumping over obstacles), the ability to drive 'himself', a front mounted scanner bar that (among other things) allowed KITT to 'see', and 'molecular bonded shell' body armor that was portrayed to be invulnerable to diamond headed drills, small arms fire, the impact of thrown objects, and even high speed impact with cinder block wall. The armor could also resist most artillery and explosive blasts although a strong direct hit could cause severe damage. A refit in the 1985 season included the addition of "Super Pursuit Mode" and a convertible top. The car's voice was supplied by actor William Daniels.

My main mission in life today seems to be: To disturb the comfortable and to comfort the disturbed. Wow, I guess I started quite a shit storm on an "entertainment" page! If I offended or stepped on your ego Bob, forcing you to quit, how omnipotent I must be! Sally, at least I didn't call him a cunt! Must we always wax eloquent, check our beliefs and keep our passionate sick humours to ourselves. So fucking serious!
Joe, I don't have any issues with Vets. My Dad was a WWII Navy Vet and NEVER wanted his son to have to go through what he went through. I have issues with all of the police actions that have taken place since the end of WWII in the name of corporate greed and avarice. I'm not a Vietnam Vet because I chose not to take part in that catastrophic action, plain and simple! But we keep doing the same thing over and over again!
I'm a 5th generation Native Northern Californian, and proud to be an Oakland A's and SF 49er fan. I just can't stand the Tigers, the Lions, the Pistons, any So Cal team and all teams East of the Mississippi River.

On a personal note, Sally and all, don't be too hard on poor

Dogged if'n I know. Cars never held much interest for me.
I did see the knight rider car at a tv car show in Las Vegas.
I can't tell you more, as what happens in Vegas…etc.
And, Joe S answered:
As a person who doesn't believe robots should drive cars, or people drive robot cars, or view anything featuring David Hassehoff, I never watched Knight Rider. Upon extensive research, I have determined that the robot car known as KITT was a Pontiac Trans Am. For what it's worth.
I will admit however, that I did enjoy watching "The Hoff" laying on the floor, obviously drunk, trying to eat a hamburger. That was fun.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are

things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something

When Quentin Tarantino won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 for "Pulp Fiction," he showered his cast with high-fives, bounced to the stage where jury president Clint Eastwood awaited, and promptly answered a heckler with a middle finger.
"Pulp Fiction" arrived in brash style in Cannes 20 years ago. On Friday, Tarantino returned to the scene of the crime. Among his many honours, he called his Palme d'Or "my single absolutely positively greatest achievement."
"Of all the trophies that I have won, it's the one that has the biggest place of honour inside of my house," said Tarantino. "It's the one I want another of some day before they turn out the lights."
Few films have ever sent the kind of shockwave "Pulp Fiction" did 20 years ago. While Tarantino granted that its revolutionary impact influenced movies for years, he said he was merely part of "a movement in the air" to upend the safer, lighter movies of the '80s.
"As far as I'm concerned, digital projection and DCPs is the death of cinema as I know it," said Tarantino, referring to digital cinema packages. "The fact that most films now are not presented in 35 millimeter means that the war is lost. Digital projections, that's just television in public. And apparently the whole world is OK with television in public. But what I knew as cinema is dead."

Maya Angelou will not attend the 2014 MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon, where she will be honoured.
Major League Baseball cited "health reasons" Friday in saying the 86-year-old won't make it to the May 30 event in Houston, Texas, before the annual Civil Rights Game.
Angelou cancelled an event last month in Fayetteville, Arkansas, because she was recovering from an "unexpected ailment" that sent her to the hospital.
Robin Roberts will be the keynote at the baseball event, which will also honour Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and football great Jim Brown.
Try to speak with Carlos Santana about his new album and he'll want to talk about another topic: changing the world.
The veteran musician says he is planning a concert aimed at encouraging and motivating the development of young black and Latino men in the wake of Trayvon Martin's death and Donald Sterling's racist comments. He wants to hold the event next year in Florida and is working with Harry Belafonte.
"I'm not show biz and entertainment, I'm an activist," he said. "I'm a person who with passion believes that we can change the world, we can transform hate and fear forever with the right songs and the right timing."
Santana's latest album, "Corazon," debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 albums chart last week. It features Juanes, Gloria Estefan and Miguel, and Santana said it wasn't hard finding "Cinderella or Cinderfella" to guest on the songs, which he calls "glass slippers."

Nearly nine years after Kanye West proclaimed that "George Bush doesn't care about black people" in a national telethon to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims, the man who stood next to him with a winced look on his face has voiced his support. "I'm, like, super proud to have been next to him," actor Mike Myers recently told GQ. "The look on my face is. . . to be honest with you, I thought I handled it well."
Looking back at the telethon, Myers recalled feeling surprised and uncomfortable. He said he wanted to do the telethon because he, too, felt "ironically, that if this was white people on roofs, the army would be there in five seconds." When one of the show's producers told him he would be working with Kanye West, Myers recalled not being familiar with the rapper's work. "And then he said he was going to take some liberties with the thing." Myers said he didn't know that the liberty would be "calling out" Bush.
Myers told the interviewer, "I don't mind answering the question [about Kanye] but the emphasis of it being that I'm the guy next to the guy who spoke a truth." Moreover, Myers said, "To have the emphasis on the look on my face versus the fact that somebody spoke truth to power at a time when somebody needed to speak? I'm very proud to have been next to him."
One month after the telethon, Myers and West appeared together on Saturday Night Live and lampooned the incident, with the Canadian-born Myers saying the U.S. government had revoked his citizenship while West looked aloof. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, West would later acknowledge that his comments might have been hyperbolic. "I would tell George Bush, in my moment of frustration, I didn't have the grounds to call him a racist," the rapper told Matt Lauer.
If you're hoping to pre-order books by J.K. Rowling, Michael Connelly and other Hachette Book Group authors, you'll have to go somewhere besides Amazon.com.
An ongoing standoff between Amazon and one of the leading New York publishers has intensified. The online retailer, which already had been slowing delivery on a wide range of Hachette titles, has removed pre-order buttons for such books as Connelly's "The Burning Room" and Rowling's "The Silkworm," a detective story she wrote under the pen name Robert Galbraith.
Previous changes had been more subtle. The listing for the paperback of J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories" says delivery will take three to five weeks and offers "Similar items at a lower price," including a collection of Ernest Hemingway stories published by Scribner.
Amazon and Hachette are reportedly at odds over terms for e-book prices, at a time when Amazon is in a position of strength and vulnerability. The Seattle-based company is the most powerful force in the book market, believed to have a share of more than 60 per cent of e-book sales and at least a third of book sales overall. Rivals have struggled to compete with Amazon's discounts and customer service.

The Vatican's Secretary of State on Thursday defended the Palestinians' right to a "sovereign and independent" homeland and said he hoped Pope Francis's upcoming visit would lead to "courageous decisions" for peace.
"We know that the pope is going to a particularly suffering land," Cardinal Pietro Parolin, whose role is equivalent to that of a prime minister, told Vatican television ahead of the pope's three-day visit starting on Saturday.
The Vatican's decision for Francis to fly by helicopter directly to Bethlehem from Jordan without passing through Israel as normally required by diplomatic protocol is a first that has cheered Palestinians and angered Israelis.
The Vatican recognised the Palestinian Territories as the "State of Palestine" in 2012 and has incurred Israeli ire in the past for appearing to side with the Palestinians although relations have improved markedly in recent years.
Britain's High Court ordered on Friday that king Richard III should be buried in a cathedral in Leicester, the city where his remains were found under a car park two years ago.
Descendants of the infamous ruler, who died in battle in 1485, had fought for his remains to be buried in York Minster, in the northern city that gave its name to Richard's royal house.
But the court ruled that there was no reason that Richard, who was immortalised as one of Shakespeare's greatest villains, should not be buried in Leicester.
Authorities have drawn up plans for a grand reinterment ceremony but it was not immediately clear when he would be buried in the cathedral.

Research linking New Zealand's diminutive kiwi with a giant extinct bird from Africa is prompting scientists to rethink how flightless birds evolved.
A report published Friday in the journal Science says DNA testing indicates the chicken-size kiwi's closest relative is the elephant bird from Madagascar, which grew up to 3 meters (10 feet) high and weighed up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds) before becoming extinct about 1,000 years ago.
The authors say the results contradict earlier theories that the kiwi and other flightless birds, including the ostrich and emu, evolved as the world's continents drifted apart about 130 million years ago.
Instead, they say, it's more likely their chicken-size, flight-capable ancestors enjoyed a window of evolutionary ascendancy about 60 million years ago, after dinosaurs died out and before mammals grew big.
Those birds, the authors say, likely flew between the continents, with some staying and becoming the large, flightless species we know today.
A federally funded study confirms a humming noise in Windsor, Ont., emanates from an island across the Detroit River but fails to completely solve the long-running mystery over the vibration.
Essex Conservative MP Jeff Watson, who revealed the findings Friday, says the acoustic monitoring study shows the rumbling is real and reaches Windsor from heavily industrial Zug Island in River Rouge, Mich.
But he says the investigation - done by scientists at the University of Windsor and Western University - fails to pinpoint just what has been causing the phenomenon.
Watson says Ottawa is now out of options to further zero in on just what's making the humming sound hum and that efforts now lie with authorities on the Michigan side of the river.
The Windsor hum has been the subject of speculation for several years and has even rattled houses in the city.
