Paul Krugman: Blue Double Cross (nytimes.com)
That didn't take long. Less than two weeks have passed since much of the medical-industrial complex made a big show of working with President Obama on health care reform - and the double-crossing is already well under way.
Kristin Tillotson: "John Sandford: Master of chaos" (Star Tribune)
John Camp drummed his fingers on the long wooden table behind his writing desk. He was 200 words shy of finishing his next thriller - No. 28 - and sending glances toward the Mac where he taps them out.
Steven Rea: Film's star explains mystery of the two espressos (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
What's the deal with the two espressos, you ask? In Jim Jarmusch's "The Limits of Control," the indie filmmaker's star, Isaach De Bankole, is a sharp-suited mystery man who makes clandestine assignations in Spanish cafes with a cast of characters played by Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and Gael Garcia Bernal.
Roger Ebert: TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13; Thumb Down))
One of Hollywood's oldest axioms teaches us: The story comes first. Watching "Terminator Salvation," it occurred to me that in the new Hollywood, the storyboard comes first. After scrutinizing the film, I offer you my summary of the story: Guy dies, finds himself resurrected, meets others, fights. That lasts for almost two hours.
Roger Ebert: Tarantino the glourious basterd
Leave it to Quentin Tarantino to find a climax unique in the history of war movies. Also trust QT to get away with a war movie that consists largely of his unique dialog style, in which a great deal of action is replaced by talk about the possibilities of action. His "Inglourious Basterds," which premiered Wednesday morning here at Cannes, is a screenplay eight years in the writing, and you can't fill 148 minutes with descriptions of special effects. At least not if you're a motormouth like Tarantino.
Roger Ebert: The Girlfriend Experience (4 stars)
This film is true about human nature. It clearly it sees needs and desires. It is not universal, but within its particular focus, it is unrelenting. Steven Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience" is about a prostitute and her clients. In such a relationship, the factor of money makes the motives fairly direct on both sides.

The series revolved around two Los Angeles detectives, both former government secret agents: Stuart ("Stu") Bailey (Efrem Zimbalist Jr), and Jeff Spencer (Roger Smith). Spencer was also a former government agent, and a non-practicing attorney. They worked out of swank digs at 77 Sunset Strip, between La Cienega Boulevard and Alta Loma Road on the south side of the Strip next door to Dean Martin's real-life lounge, Dino's.
Hanging around for comic relief were Roscoe the racetrack tout played by Louis Quinn, and the rock and roll-loving, wisecracking, hair-combing, hipster, P.I. wanna-be, valet parking attendant next door, Gerald Lloyd Kookson III ("Kookie"), played by Edd Byrnes. Comb sales soared.

OMG, I am just old enough to remember when, "77 Sunset Strip" was the hottest show on TV! I am also old enough to remember being in love with the Edd Byrnes character, "Kookie!" Who else (anyone?) can remember his slang expression, "ginchy" which was NOT used by proper young ladies and gentlemen at that time! And, when Kookie helped the detectives on a case by singing a song, Edd Byrnes had a singing career with his HIT song, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb," (because he frequently combed his hair). I kid you not! If I remember correctly, the detectives (and Kookie) of 77 Sunset Strip worked out of swank digs next door to, Dean Martin's (D) real life lounge.

D Dean Martin's named 'Dino's Lodge'. Dino's 'mission statement' printed on the inside of the menu, "If you can find better food anywhere, forget it . . I'm a singer, not a cook."

Bill Clinton's saxophone and Robert Pattinson's lips have helped a star-studded charity event raise money to fight AIDS.
An alto sax signed and donated by the former U.S. president was one of the star lots at the Cinema Against AIDS benefit on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, selling for $180,000. There was also keen bidding on two kisses from "Twilight" star Pattinson, which raised $28,000 each.
Sharon Stone hosted the 16th annual event late Thursday at the exclusive Hotel du Cap on the French Riviera. Annie Lennox entertained about 800 guests who included Paris Hilton, model Claudia Schiffer, director Terry Gilliam, rapper 50 Cent and scientist James Watson, one of the discoverers of DNA.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will play three shows at Giants Stadium in New Jersey this fall, months before the arena is torn down, the Boss announced onstage Thursday night (May 21).
The shows will take place September 30 and October 2 and 3, Springsteen said at his concert at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Tickets go on sale June 1, according to a flyer distributed after the show.
Giants Stadium is scheduled for demolition in 2010.
Elizabeth Taylor is in the hospital, but she's well enough to communicate on Twitter.
A publicist for the 77-year-old actress says she "entered the hospital for a routine visit and is doing fine."
Spokesman Dick Guttman added that Taylor has "fallen in love" with the popular micro-blogging site and that she is trying to smuggle her new puppy into her hospital room.
Guttman said Taylor "will be home soon" but he did not specify when she would be released.
Even in bad times, the show must go on: the Spoleto Festival USA opened Friday with a brass fanfare and tributes to 80-year-old Charles Wadsworth, who retires this year after directing chamber music at Spoleto festivals for half a century.
"We all know that these are tough times for America in general and the arts in particular," actress Jane Alexander, a former chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, told some 1,000 people gathered outside City Hall to launch the festival that runs until June 7.
This year's Spoleto budget is US$6.2 million - down from $8.4 million last year in yet another sign of the nation's recession. But Alexander brushed aside the economic gloom as she declared, "Charleston today is a celebration."
This is "a day that marks the beginning of a brief time when we can all set worry aside and let ourselves be transported by the beauty and the passion of artistic performances," she added.
Prosecutors in California say the wife of standup comic Robert Schimmel has declined press assault charges against him.
Deputy District Attorney James Garrison also wrote in a charge evaluation worksheet filed Thursday that there was not enough evidence to charge the 59-year-old.
Schimmel was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife on May 2 at his Calabasas home. She later filed for divorce.
Kiefer Sutherland and the fashion designer he's accused of head-butting at a Manhattan night club said Friday they resolved their differences, clearing the way for the charges to be dropped. Sutherland and Jack McCollough issued a brief joint statement Friday to The Associated Press through Sutherland's attorney.
"I am sorry about what happened that night and sincerely regret that Mr. McCollough was injured," Sutherland said in the statement.
The star of Fox television's "24" was charged May 7 with third-degree assault in the alleged incident two weeks ago at a nightclub at the Mercer Hotel in the trendy SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. The minor charge is comparable to a speeding ticket.
A spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office declined to comment on whether the charges would be dismissed.
Australia's Tasmanian devil, the world's largest surviving marsupial carnivore, will be listed as endangered because of a contagious and deadly cancer, the government said.
"This disease has led to the decline of about 70 percent of the Tasmanian devil population since the disease was first reported in 1996," Environment Minister Peter Garrett said in a statement.
Devil facial tumour disease, which is spread through biting, kills the animals usually within three months by growing over their faces and mouths, preventing them from eating.
The animals were previously listed as vulnerable, and Garrett said the change in status to endangered would give them greater protection under national environment law.

A teacher who became notorious in the 1990s for having an affair with a sixth-grader is hosting a "Hot for Teacher" night at a Seattle bar - along with the former student, now her husband.
The 47-year-old Letourneau served seven years in prison after pleading guilty in 1997 to raping Vili Fualaau, now 26. They met when Fualaau was in second grade and began their affair when he was 12 and she was a 34-year-old married mother of four. They were married in 2005 and have two daughters together.
Bar owner Mike Morris says Saturday's event at Fuel Sports Eats & Beats will be their third "Hot for Teacher" night. She greets people and he DJs.

A Tokyo park has started playing a high-pitched tone at night that only young people can hear to help drive away teenagers who keep vandalizing the toilets and other facilities.
"We were having trouble improving the situation and trying to decide what to do, when we found out about The Mosquito and decided to give it a try," said Haruyuki Masuda, an official in charge of parks in Tokyo's Adachi district.
"The Mosquito" is a device that emits a high-frequency tone that is unbearable to those who can hear it, Masuda said.
People's ability to hear high frequencies falls as they age. The device produces a high-pitch tone of around 17 kilohertz, which teens can hear but older people cannot.
