David Weidner: Better Than Buffett, This Investor Made Me Rich for Life (Wall Street Journal)
My mother, Carol Craig Weidner, wasn't a great investor by traditional standards. She never played the stock market. She never put money into a venture. She made different investments. She worked, went to school, started a career, pursued her interests, made friendships and spent an enormous time nurturing her family.

A friend of mine who came to lunch the other day said she had a problem with one of her grandchildren. "Nits?" I said sympathetically. "Refusal to eat own-brand ketchup? Killing pets?" It was more serious than all of these. The child, it appeared, had no interest in fiction. "He only wants facts," said his grandmother, helplessly. Neither of us had had any personal familiarity with such a desire in childhood. I was 24, I believe, before I ingested my first fact and I can't say it was an experience I want to repeat too often.
Chaplain's Assistant Billy Pilgrim survived the firebombing of Dresden in what satirical novel?
Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance with DeathSource
Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death (1969) is a satirical novel by Kurt Vonnegut about World War II experiences and journeys through time of a soldier named Billy Pilgrim. Ranked the 18th greatest English language novel of the 20th century by Modern Library, it is generally recognized as Vonnegut's most influential and popular work. Vonnegut's use of the firebombing of Dresden as a central event makes the novel semi-autobiographical, as he was present during the bombing.
Chaplain's Assistant Billy Pilgrim is a disoriented, fatalistic, and ill-trained American soldier. He does not like wars and is captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans put Billy and his fellow prisoners in a disused slaughterhouse (although there are animal carcasses hanging in the underground shelter) in Dresden. Their building is known as "Schlachthof-fünf" ("Slaughterhouse Five"). During the bombing, the POWs and German guards alike hide in a deep cellar. Because of their safe hiding place, they are some of the few survivors of the city-destroying firestorm.

Oh I know, I know, and I didn't look it up on the internet except to get a swell picture! It's Slaughter House Five! I tried to watch the movie on TV once, but it confused me so.
I should read the book before I die.

Slaughterhouse 5, by the late, very missed Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
(I spoke at length with Mr. Vonnegut once when by visited my college campus. We mainly talked about Mark Twain and he said to me, "Young man, you really know your Mark Twain." Along the way, he mentioned he was the only person in the world who profited from the bombing of Dresden. He said the novel made him $3.00 for every person who died! That is a mordant sense of humor!)

The White House says Obama will present the award to King during a concert Wednesday. The program will include performances by King, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sande, James Taylor and Trisha Yearwood.

The number of Americans who watched vocal powerhouse Candice Glover win the "American Idol" title sank to 14.2 million, a decline of 31 percent from last year's record low, according to ratings data on Friday.
The singing competition, now in Season 12, was once a TV industry juggernaut for Fox that brought in more than 30 million viewers for its finale in the peak years of 2006 and 2007.
On Thursday night, it was the second most-watched program on U.S. television, beat out by the season finale of CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory" with 14.8 million viewers. It was also the first time an "Idol" finale failed to bring in 20 million viewers.
The finale audience declined 39 percent from last year in the 18-to-49 age group, the demographic advertisers covet most, according to data compiled by Nielsen.
Women's rights protesters disrupted the opening of a giant pink doll's house in Berlin on Thursday, saying the Barbie "Dreamhouse Experience" objectified women.
Promoting the doll made by Mattel Inc, the house allows paying visitors to try on Barbie's clothes, play in her kitchen and have a go on her pink piano. The exhibition will be open until August 25.
A handful of protesters gathered outside the shocking pink house that has been erected in one of central Berlin's greyest areas.
A topless woman, a member of the Femen protest group, who had the slogan "Life in plastic is not fantastic" scrawled across her chest, set fire to a Barbie doll tied to a mini crucifix.
"There's too much emphasis on becoming more beautiful and on being pretty and that puts an awful lot of pressure on girls as well as wasting capacities which they could use to simply be happy or for school," said Stevie Meriel Schmiedel, a founding member of the "Pink Stinks" protest group.

George Michael was being treated at a hospital Friday for what his publicist called minor injuries after being a passenger in a car crash near London.
A statement released Friday said the singer was in an accident on Thursday night and suffered "superficial cuts and bruises."
Sky News reported that the crash happened Thursday evening on the crowded M1 motorway just northwest of London. It said a different man in the crash had to be taken by air ambulance to a hospital for a head injury.
The popular singer has had numerous car-related problems in recent years.
Justin Bieber has just hours to reclaim his pet monkey from the animal shelter where it has been since it was seized by German customs, officials said Friday, but he will have to pay thousands for the two-month stay even if he doesn't take the animal back.
A spokesman for Munich's customs office said the teenage singer has until midnight to contact them, otherwise capuchin monkey Mally will be transferred to a permanent home at a zoo or animal park elsewhere in Germany.
Mally was seized by German customs March 28 when Bieber failed to produce required vaccination and import papers after landing in Munich while on tour.
The now 20-week-old animal was quarantined and cared for at Munich's animal shelter, where manager Karl Heinz Joachim said Mally had fared well and gained weight.
The shelter has criticized Bieber for keeping such a young monkey as a pet, saying it shouldn't have been taken away from its mother until it was a year old. Experts say capuchin monkeys also need to be kept in groups as they are very sociable animals.

Thieves ripped a safe from the wall of a hotel room near the Cannes Film Festival and made off with around $1 million worth of jewelry, in a brazen late-night burglary just hours after the screening of a film about break-ins at the homes of Hollywood celebrities, French officials said Friday.
The apparently well-planned robbery at the Novotel hotel took place in the room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and jewelry maker and festival sponsor that was hosting a splashy gala event in a far ritzier hotel around the same time, officials said.
Chopard has loaned jewelry to A-list stars who walk on the festival's famed red carpet under rapid-fire flashes of photographers' cameras. Already this year model Carla Delevingne and actress Julianne Moore have walked the carpet in Chopard gems.
The theft was believed to have taken place sometime between 7 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday, said Mascarelli, when the Chopard employee returned to the hotel room and noticed the damage. Mascarelli said he did not know whether the employee had been attending a Chopard gala that was running late into the night at the 5-star Hotel Martinez across town, where the company has a suite during the festival.
Chopard manufactures the crystal and gold Palme d'Or trophy awarded each year to the festival's top film. Festival organizers would not disclose the Palme's whereabouts Friday, but said it was kept in a safe place. They had no comment on the robbery.
In one photo, a woman is on all fours, presumably picking something up, her posterior pressed against a glass window. Another photo shows a couple in bathrobes, their feet touching beneath a table. And there is one of a man, in jeans and a T-shirt, lying on his side as he takes a nap.
In all the photos, taken by New York City artist Arne Svenson from his second-floor apartment, the faces are obscured or not shown. The people are unidentifiable.
But the residents of a glass-walled luxury residential building across the street had no idea they were being photographed and never consented to being subjects for the works of art that are now on display - and for sale - in a Manhattan gallery.
Svenson's show, "The Neighbors," opened last Saturday at the Julie Saul Gallery in Chelsea, where about a dozen large prints are on sale for up to $7,500. His exhibit is drawing a lot of attention, not for the quality of the work, but for the manner in which it was made.

Singer Andy Williams' eclectic art collection has brought $46 million at a New York City auction.
The late singer's taste ranged from contemporary, impressionist and modern to Latin American and 20th-century decorative art and design.
He collected over a 60-year period. The works were displayed at his California and Missouri homes, as well as his Moon River Theater in Branson, Mo.
Auction highlights included Willem de Koonings' "Untitled XVII," which fetched $9.7 million and Jean-Michel Basquiat's "Furious Man, which realized $5.7 million.
