Trivia Question from Yesterday

In the old Fleischer Studio's Popeye the Sailor cartoons, Popeye had 4 identical nephews - Pipeye, Peepeye, Pupeye, and ____?____

Popeye the Sailor is a fictional muscular American cartoon character created by Elzie Crisler Segar. The character first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929, and Popeye became the strip's title in later years. The character has also appeared in theatrical and television animated cartoons.

Segar's Thimble Theatre strip was in its 10th year when Popeye made his debut, but the one-eyed sailor quickly became the main focus of the strip, and Thimble Theatre became one of King Features' most popular properties during the 1930s. After Segar died in 1938, Thimble Theatre was continued by several writers and artists, most notably Segar's assistant Bud Sagendorf.

In 1933, Max Fleischer adapted the Thimble Theatre characters into a series of Popeye the Sailor theatrical cartoon shorts for Paramount Pictures. These cartoons proved to be among the most popular of the 1930s, and Fleischer - and later Paramount's own Famous Studios - continued production through 1957. These cartoon shorts are now owned by Turner Entertainment and distributed by its sister company Warner Bros.

Alan J answered:
   Poopeye.

Dave responded:
Poopeye. As a tyke I watched a lot of Popeye cartoons after school on the Grand Rapids, Michigan WOOD TV program starring a singing cowboy named Buck Barry. Besides hosting children's TV programs, Buck was also a local morning radio DJ. Besides an old Popeye cartoon, every show featured a partial 3 Stooges short, started in the middle to fit the time allotted. Buck Barry was one of those western singers that liked to yodel, which was kind of funny to me.

Ed K replied:
   Pinkeye

Dave in Tucson answered:
The fourth nephew was "Pupeye". Wonder if the name's first draft was "Poopeye"?

Deborah responded:
I don't remember those old Popeye cartoons, and I sure don't remember the little guys. Stumped again. Good job, Marty.

Billy in Cypress U$A replied:
I had to look it up, but found that the name of the fourth nephew was "Poopeye" and was later changed to "Pepeye", i.e. less "manurey". Maybe, tRump should be renamed "tAnus" for more clarity, i.e. no "taint", all Anus.

Yes. That would be Pipeye, Pupeye, Peepeye and Crapeye. Or Dumpeye. Something like that.

Anecdotes

Names

• This should be obvious, but even rock gods have families and personal lives. Suzi Quatro's name at birth was Susan Kay Quatro. The name "Quatro" actually came from when her paternal grandfather immigrated to the United States, and an American immigration official changed her grandfather's name - Quattrocchi - because he thought it was too hard to pronounce. Suzi's parents were an Italian father and a Hungarian mother, and Suzi says, "Mom always said to me that they were 'paprika and garlic - boy, oh boy, what a mix!'" Suzi performed her rock and roll while wearing a leather jumpsuit - a sexy outfit that helped many teenaged boys get through puberty - and her mother once told her that her music was "very nice, but do you have to stand with your legs so far apart?"

• The name "Ramones" comes from a pseudonym that Paul McCarthy used while traveling: Paul Ramone. Of course, there's more to the story of the name than that. Founding member Tommy Ramone points out, "It sounded tough. Like the streets of the city. Yet it also sounded ridiculous, like a joke. It was like something absurd yet dangerous. It really struck you." Tommy was instrumental in creating the Ramones' uniform - torn blue jeans, tennis shoes, T-shirts, leather jackets - and he insisted that each band member change his professional name to Ramone. By the way, Tommy was born Tamas Erdelyi in Hungary. He once watched a movie in Hungary about the "decadent west." It featured a soundtrack with "animalistic" music from America, and Tomas fell in love with rock 'n' roll.

• Eleanora Fagan was born on April 7, 1915, in Baltimore, Maryland. Later, her mother, Sadie Fagan, married her father, Clarence Holiday, and Eleanora Fagan became Eleanora Holiday. As a youngster, she admired film star Billie Dove, and so she began calling herself Billie Holiday. As a young woman, she started singing and waiting tables at clubs where the other women would pick up their tips with their thighs. Billie declined to do that, and the other women taunted, "Look at her - she thinks she's a lady." Billie then became known as "Lady." After Billie become a well-known jazz singer, saxophonist Lester Young shortened her last name, using only its last syllable, and so Eleanora Fagan, aka Billie Holiday, became known as "Lady Day."

• When the teenaged Lou Reed started riding a motorcycle with a guitar on his back and a sneer on his face, his parents forced him to undergo a series of shock treatments before he started his senior year in high school. The shock treatments erased many memories and strengthened his desire to shock his parents. He once brought home a nice Jewish girl whom his parents loved. A year later, the nice Jewish girl was still his girlfriend, but her new name was "Miss Trash," and she dressed like her name. Mr. Reed, of course, was a founding member of the Velvet Underground and recorded the music he wanted to record, not the music he thought would be popular.

• Rap musicians sometimes "sample" the works of other musicians - that is, they will take bits and pieces from someone else's song and use it in their own music. For a while, this was not a problem, but when rap became big business, suddenly the musicians whose works had been sampled wanted a cut of the profits and so rap musicians had to get permission or clearance to sample the works of other musicians. Biz Markie found this out the hard way. He had sampled Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally," without permission, and a court ordered his company to remove the album with the offending sample from the marketplace. Fortunately, Mr. Markie bounced back. A few years later, he released another, legally unoffending album, which he wittily titled All Samples Cleared.

'Grease Sing-A-Long'

CBS

CBS has announced a "Grease Sing-A-Long" that will feature follow-along lyrics to all the songs during the film for viewers to join in the fun.

The 1978 movie musical with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John became both a cultural phenomenon and a classic, making the pair superstars.

The soundtrack boasts several unforgettable songs, including "Greased Lightnin'," "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee," "Summer Nights," the Academy Award -nominated "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "Beauty School Drop Out" and, of course, the eponymous title track "Grease."

The event is part of the network's Sunday Night Movies, which features iconic films from the Paramount Pictures library.

"Grease Sing-A-Long" will air June 7 on the network and CBS All Access.

Refuses Hacker Ransom

Law Firm

Days after the celebrity law firm that represents Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and Nicki Minaj admitted it was "victimized by a cyberattack," the hackers that executed the breach released their first batch of stolen data Thursday: files that focused on the law firm's work with Lady Gaga.

The unnamed hacker group, using ransomware dubbed "REvil," launched the cyberattack against the internal data systems of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks; on Wednesday, they asked the law firm for $21 million in exchange for the 756 gigabytes of stolen data. However, after the firm allegedly hired cyber-extortion specialists to combat the ransomware demands, the hackers released a 2.4 gigabyte batch of files Thursday.

"It seems that GRUBMANS doesn't care about their clients or it was a mistake to hire a recovery company to help in the negotiations," the hackers wrote. "As we promised, we [published] the first part of the data because the time is up." A source close to the firm confirmed to Rolling Stone that the company has declined to pay any ransom.

The "first part" was a 2.4-gigabyte folder including legal work the law firm did for Lady Gaga: contracts sent to producers, collaborators, and members of her touring ensemble; promotional agreements; expense sheets; confidentiality agreement forms; performer agreements; reimbursement forms for the artist Jeff Koons; a handful of promotional photos; and reams of tedious paperwork one would expect to find in the database of an entertainment law firm. (A representative for Lady Gaga declined to comment.)

Soon after the hackers dropped the initial 2.4 gigabytes of information, they issued a "little press release" saying that their demands had not been met and that "the ransom is now $42 million." They also claimed to be in possession of documents connected to President Trump.

Buys Giphy For $400M

Facebook

Seven years ago, Facebook claimed not to support the 21st century's new favorite communication tool, the animated GIF. Oh, how times have changed: Today, Facebook's newest acquisition is one of the Internet's most popular GIF hosting sites.

Facebook is making Giphy part of the Instagram team, the company said today. Axios, which was first to report the transaction, said the deal was valued at about $400 million.

According to Facebook, about half of Giphy's current traffic already comes from Facebook products, especially Instagram. That's perhaps unsurprising, given that Facebook's big three apps-WhatsApp, Instagram, and flagship Facebook-have literally billions of daily users among them.

Giphy was, in fact, the first service to make animated images work on Facebook. It created a workaround back in 2013, when Facebook's now-laughable official stance was, "Facebook does not support animated GIFs."

'Competitive' Nature

Whether he's facing off against a global pandemic or his 10-year-old children, President Trump (R-Failure) has always wanted to win.

Trump has turned coronavirus into a global competition over the past few weeks, particularly bragging about how much better the U.S. is supposedly doing than South Korea when it comes to COVID-19 testing. But about 25 years ago, Trump was more fond of racing his young children down ski hills and apparently trying to trip them in the process, they told New York Magazine in a December 2004 article.

The oldest Trump children have had a healthy dose of "sibling rivalry" in their lives since they were young, and it stems from their father, New York Magazine writes. "We were sort of bred to be competitive," Ivanka Trump said at the time. "Dad encourages it. I remember skiing with him and we were racing. I was ahead, and he reached his ski pole out and pulled me back." Eric Trump has a similar memory: "He would try to push me over, just so he could beat his 10-year-old son down the mountain," he said.

No matter how many times the Trump kids ended up face-down in the snow, they're all united behind their father today. Read more of their throwback thoughts at New York Magazine.

WTF

DOJ

It was enough that last week, the US Department of Justice did something completely unheard of: it moved to dismiss the guilty plea of a cabinet level officer, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, for lying to the FBI. The department's argument was so preposterous that within days, nearly 2,000 former department officials signed a letter in protest of William Barr's "assault on the rule of law".

A week before the motion to dismiss in the Flynn case, Trump had tweeted that a prosecution like Flynn's "should never be allowed to happen … again". The day that the motion was filed, Trump told reporters that the Obama administration officials had targeted Flynn to try to "take down a president". In co-ordination, Trump campaign manager BradParscale issued a statement saying: "[T]he Obama-Biden officials responsible for these misdeeds must be held accountable."

Immediately after the filing in the Flynn case, Barr went on national television and attacked the FBI, pointedly disparaging its 2016 investigation into Russian interference and letting it be known that FBI officials or ex-officials were under examination for prosecution: "[J]ust because something may even stink to high heaven and … appear to everyone to be bad we still have to apply the right standard and be convinced that there's a violation of a criminal statute."

Then on Wednesday, Barr's press spokeswoman, Kerri Kupec, upped the ante in the high-stakes effort to lend political support to Gen Flynn and to Trump's partisan political interests. Kupec complained about an allegedly nefarious effort involving Joe Biden to "unmask" Flynn's identity during the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

She said this to the Fox news correspondent Martha MacCallum: "Martha, what happened to candidate Trump and then President Trump was one of the greatest political injustices in American history and should never happen again."

White House Protest

Truckers

Truckers blaring their horns outside the White House Friday interrupted a press briefing by US President Donald Trump (R-Petulant), who welcomed their protest at low shipping rates during the coronavirus pandemic.

"That's the sign of love," said lied Trump from the podium in the White House grounds, referring to the honking that he called "that beautiful sound."

"They're protesting in favor of President Trump, as opposed to against him," he said lied.

Dozens of large trucks have been parked for days outside the White House in the heart of Washington.

The truckers are demanding the administration address the issue of low freight shipping rates, which they say are putting their business at risk.

Texas A&M

Hypersonic Weapons

The Texas A&M University System board of regents has approved the funding to create a new hypersonic weapons test center for U.S. Army Futures Command.

On Thursday, the regents voted to spend $79.3 million of university funds on the project, dubbed the Bush Combat Development Center. The state of Texas already approved $50 million, with the Army kicking in another $65 million.

The plan, first unveiled last August, is to develop a kilometer-long enclosed tube that can be used for hypersonic weapons tests, along with testing grounds for air and land combat vehicles on the university's RELLIS research campus, located an hour outside of Austin, Texas.

The campus will also feature "laboratories, runways, underground and open-air ranges and a resilient network of sensors and systems for experimentation, data collection, analysis and storage," according to a university release. The RELLIS campus has already been used to test other priorities for Army Futures Command, including autonomous land vehicles.

"Texas A&M and the RELLIS campus will become a nexus for collaboration and high-tech testing in service to our nation's security," Elaine Mendoza, chairman of the A&M System board, said in a statement. "Today's vote will bring hundreds of millions worth of private investment to Central Texas as these facilities come to life. Simply put, this is where American defense contractors will want to set up shop if they want to work with the U.S. Army Futures Command."

Pangolins

Understanding the origins of the virus causing COVID-19 is one of the key questions scientists are trying to resolve while working out how to manage the pandemic. But in a fast-evolving situation, we're bound to point our fingers at a few innocent suspects along the way.

The current hypothesis goes something like this: SARS-CoV-2 passed through a mystery animal host in its suspected evolutionary journey from bats to humans. Critically endangered pangolins have been a favoured candidate for this intermediary host, but now a genomic analysis led by geneticist Ping Liu from Guangdong Academy of Science in China has provided evidence this may not be the case.

SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the Betacoronavirus genus of coronaviruses; this group of coronaviruses primarily infects mammals, and the new study suggests that pangolins are indeed natural hosts for them.

The team pieced together almost an entire genome of the coronaviruses found in two sick Malayan pangolins (Manis javanica). They called the coronavirus isolated from these critically endangered animals pangolin-CoV-2020. Its final sequence had 29,521 base pairs, only slightly shorter than the 30,000-odd base pairs making up SARS-CoV-2.

The resulting genome displayed a 90.32 percent sequence similarity to SARS-CoV-2 and 90.24 percent to the Rhinolophus affinis bat coronavirus BatCoV-RaTG13, which still remains the closest known relative to SARS-CoV-2, with a match of 96.18 percent.

Mysterious Disappearance 900 Years Ago

Moon

There's no use sugar coating it: According to one scribe in medieval England, A.D. 1110 was a "disastrous year." Torrential rainfall damaged crops, famine stalked the land - and, as if that wasn't bad enough, on one fateful night in May, the moon simply vanished from the sky.

"On the fifth night in the month of May appeared the moon shining bright in the evening, and afterwards by little and little its light diminished," the unnamed scribe wrote in the Anglo-Saxon manuscript known as the Peterborough Chronicle. "As soon as night came, it was so completely extinguished withal, that neither light, nor orb, nor anything at all of it was seen. And so it continued nearly until day, and then appeared shining full and bright."

Clouds weren't the problem; if they were, the scribe would not go on to describe how bright and twinkling the stars appeared while the moon faded from view. Nor was the moon being eclipsed by Earth's shadow - if it was, the skywatcher would have seen the orb become a coppery "blood moon," not an eerie blank spot in the sky.

So, what made the moon disappear in an already dismal year? According to a study published April 21 in the journal Scientific Reports, the explanation for both the moon's mysterious vanishing act and the rain-ravaged summer that followed may be one and the same - volcanoes.
