Roger Ebert: A Natural History
In those years we lived close to the ground. My earliest memory is lying flat on my stomach on our front sidewalk, my nose inches from a procession of ants. When you are short and a child, the earth is close and the world of adults towers above. You'd like to climb to the top shelf where you think the Oreos might be, but a more reliable entertainment is to use a sheet to make a cave out of a side table. I listened to the Lone Ranger while hiding under my bed, where I felt safe.
Paul Krugman: Easy Useless Economics (New York Times)
… there is growing evidence that the corrosive effects of high unemployment will cast a shadow over the economy for many years to come. Every time some self-important politician or pundit starts going on about how deficits are a burden on the next generation, remember that the biggest problem facing young Americans today isn't the future burden of debt - a burden, by the way, that premature spending cuts probably make worse, not better. It is, rather, the lack of jobs, which is preventing many graduates from getting started on their working lives.
Susan Estrich: Saturday Night with Bea (Creators Syndicate)
Everybody hates lawyers until they need one. We don't just fight for the big guys. We stand between the Beas of the world and the people who, without us, would abuse their power with impunity. We do our best to make the rule of law mean something. We are the priests in the temple of our civic religion. In the rush to find jobs and pay debts, I try to remind my students of this. And myself. What do I do if the police come after me, Bea asked, still shaking. I gave her my card. Tell them to call your lawyer.

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie (July 14, 1912 - October 3, 1967) is best known as an American singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works. He frequently performed with the slogan This Machine Kills Fascists displayed on his guitar. His best-known song is "This Land Is Your Land". Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress.
Guthrie traveled with migrant workers from Oklahoma to California and learned traditional folk and blues songs. Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl era during the Great Depression, earning him the nickname the "Dust Bowl Troubadour".

I'm going with
Arlo's daddy, Woody Guthrie. I still think "This Land" should be our national anthem and that we should replace the fabricated from whole cloth "Pledge of Allegiance" recitation with the Preamble to the Constitution.

Good old, Woody Guthrie was also called the, "Dust Bowl Troubadour." I remember that he died when I was at the height of anti-war protesting in the 60's, and that his music was truly embraced by the 'so-called' leftist folk music community. He protested class inequality, and his music (in part) inspired the socialist in me to this day.
My favorite album
PS: Too bad his son, Arlo turned out to be such a jerk - and a REPUBLICAN to boot! Boo!!
Dale of Diamond Springs responded:
Woody Guthrie was the Dust Bowl Troubadour. He is an American hero! Wonder What Woody would have to say about the injustice, inequality, and hatred plus the Oligarchy that we live in today???
Some quotes:
"Take it easy, but take it."
"This machine kills fascists."
"Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple."

Many great songs
Not to mention the verses of this land is your land that are never sung
As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.
Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.
In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?

ABC is turning Nik Wallenda's attempted tightrope walk over Niagara Falls into a prime-time television event next month.
The network said Friday it will devote its entire prime-time schedule to a three-hour special on June 15 with the daredevil's attempt. Part of the show will be an examination of the greatest stunts of all time.
Wallenda is a member of the famous daredevil family. His great-grandfather, Karl, fell to his death in a tightrope walk in Puerto Rico at age 78.
Daredevils routinely used to make tightrope walks over the Niagara River gorge, downstream of the falls, until the practice was banned. Nik Wallenda's stunt will be the first attempted walk over the falls themselves.

NBC says "30 Rock'''s next season will be its last.
The network said Thursday the much-acclaimed sitcom will have an abbreviated run of 13 episodes in its seventh season before calling it quits.
The show has been a critical favorite since premiering in 2006. It has won numerous awards, as have its creator-star Tina Fey and co-star Alec Baldwin. Many high-profile guest stars, including Matt Damon, Elizabeth Banks and Al Gore, have appeared on the show. But the series was never a ratings smash, and this year its audience has dwindled to an average 3.5 million viewers.
NBC will join other broadcast networks in unveiling full new prime-time schedules for advertisers next week. NBC will make its upcoming lineup official on Sunday.
NBC has canceled the David E. Kelley legal dramedy "Harry's Law."
The series, which starred Kathy Bates, struggled with low ratings since its debut in September 2011, and it's exit was long expected. This season, it averaged a mere 1.4 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic.
Official word that the show was cancelled after two seasons came as NBC makes room for new shows in its 2012-13 lineup.
"Best Friends Forever," "Bent," "Are You There, Chelsea," and "Awake" were also canceled Friday, the same day NBC announced new seasons for "Parks and Recreation," "Fashion Star," Whitney," and "Up All Night."

"America's Funniest Home Videos" was renewed for another season by ABC on Friday, ensuring that the pioneer in user-generated content will roll into a 23rd season.
The network also renewed "Wife Swap" for another season, with a 13-episode order that will cover both regular edition and episodes of "Celebrity Wife Swap," which premiered last year.
On Thursday, the network renewed a number of series, including "Modern Family," "Dancing With the Stars," "Once Upon a Time" and Suburgatory."
Two people have been charged with extortion after police detectives say they arrested the pair for trying to sell what they said was embarrassing information about Stevie Wonder.
The duo, Alpha Lorenzo Walker and his girlfriend Tamara Eileen Diaz, have been jailed since their arrest on May 2. Both have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to appear in court on May 16 for a hearing in which a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence for them to stand trial.
According to a felony complaint, Walker and Diaz attempted to obtain money from the Grammy-winning musician, who is identified by his birth name, Steveland Morris. An email message sent to Wonder's studio was not immediately returned Friday.
Walker, 38, was on probation at the time of his arrest after pleading no contest to grand theft in May 2011. A judge issued a suspended three-year prison sentence in that case and he is due in court for a probation violation hearing May 31.
Walker identifies himself as Wonder's nephew and is being held without bail because of another case.

Authorities say a fire that damaged a Georgia business used as a backdrop in "The Vampire Diaries" should not affect filming of the television series.
The Covington News reports that Thursday's fire struck the interior of the building known on the television show as the Mystic Grill. Fire officials say the facade for the fictional restaurant remains intact.
The building's interior, which houses law offices, sustained significant damage.
Covington police Capt. Ken Malcom says the fire was sparked by electrical wires that came down after a tall delivery truck snagged overhead power lines.

A tough-on-immigration Arizona sheriff, who resigned as co-chairman of Mitt Romney's state campaign in February after allegations he threatened a male lover with deportation, on Friday dropped his bid to become a Republican congressional candidate.
Embattled Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu (R-Vindictive) told supporters in a letter posted on his website that he would instead seek re-election to a second term as sheriff.
Babeu, considered a strong candidate to win the Republican nomination for a congressional seat this year, was due to challenge U.S. Representative Paul Gosar in the August 28 primary.
Babeu appeared in a 2010 campaign ad for Republican U.S. Senator John McCain (R-Depends) that called for tighter border security and urged the Obama administration to "complete the danged fence" on the border with Mexico.
The television spot, which showed McCain and Babeu walking a stretch of the boundary fence in Nogales, raised some eyebrows in Arizona as Pinal County does not border Mexico.
Traditional straw shoes, or jipsin, hang from the bag of a student in traditional scholar costume as he arrives with others at Myeongnyundang, a lecture hall at a Confucian shrine at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul May 11, 2012. The high school students are from the port city of Busan and were taking part in a re-enactment of the traditional state examinations,"Gwageo". The practice of holding "Gwageo" to select government officials began in Korea in 788 and was abrogated in 1894. Jipsin were commonly worn by farmers, common people and scholars in ancient times in Korea until the early twentieth century.

Newly-released documentary film footage from January 2011 shows Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker describing a "divide and conquer" strategy for going after the state's public employee unions that would begin with going after their collective bargaining rights.
Walker's opponents insist the remarks undermine the governor's long-held claim that his polarizing law stripping most public workers of nearly all their collective bargaining rights was meant solely as a budget-balancing measure.
A complete transcript shows the governor immediately added that the state and local governments need the law to help balance their books. However, it remained unclear Friday exactly what the governor meant by "divide and conquer," and his spokeswoman, Ciara Matthews, declined to explain during a telephone interview with The Associated Press.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported the video late Thursday. Filmmaker Brad Lichtenstein captured the clip while making a documentary about the city of Janesville's efforts to create jobs following the closure of a General Motors plant.
It shows the newly-elected Walker talking to a top donor, Beloit billionaire Diane Hendricks, and Mary Willmer-Sheedy, an M&I Bank executive from Janesville. Hendricks asks Walker whether he can make Wisconsin a "completely red state, and work on these unions, and become a right-to-work" state. She was referring to states that have passed laws favored by conservatives that allow workers to not pay union dues or join a union even if they are covered by a union contract.

An Arizona high school forfeited a shot at a state baseball championship on Thursday rather than compete against an opponent that had a 15-year-old girl on its team, an official from the rival school said.
Our Lady of Sorrows Academy in Phoenix had been due to play Mesa Preparatory Academy in the Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship.
But the team pulled out rather than face the Mesa squad, which fielded 15-year-old Paige Sultzbach at second base, Mesa Preparatory Academy headmaster Robert Wagner said.
"They wouldn't play the game as long as we had a girl on the team who was on the field. It violates their policy about boys playing against girls," Wagner told Reuters.
Media reports described Our Lady of Sorrows as being run by traditionalist, conservative priests who do not agree with Roman Catholic Church reforms enacted by the Vatican II Council in the 1960s and who broke from the Church in the 1980s.
His son, Trevor, told the Los Angeles Times that Lindsey died on May 4 at his home in Malibu.
Lindsey was music director for Garland at her 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall and her later TV show.
He also worked with Streisand and won a 1969 Emmy for his work on her videotaped concert in New York's Central Park. In a statement, Streisand says working with Lindsey was a dream come true.
Lindsey also was music director for "The Merv Griffin Show" for more than two decades.
Lord contributed to shows in myriad ways, such as producing, directing and occasionally acting, but above all he was a writer.
He started in the mid-1950s with "Harbor Command" and kept writing into the late 1980s and early 1990s, contributing episodes of "T.J. Hooker" and "Matlock."
