Paul Krugman: Medicaid Nonsense (New York Times)
… until now the claim of right-wingers has been that Medicaid actually makes you sicker; serious researchers have always said that this was a case of selection bias, because sicker people got Medicaid - and now we have confirmation: those who got Medicaid were at least somewhat healthier than those who didn't.

Paul Krugman: Not Enough Inflation (New York Times)
Whenever anyone talks about the need for more stimulus, monetary and fiscal, to reduce unemployment, the response from people who imagine themselves wise is always that we should focus on the long run, not on short-run fixes. The truth, however, is that by failing to deal with our short-run mess, we're turning it into a long-run, chronic economic malaise.

Andrew Tobias: Touring the New Bush Library
… President Bush mis-led us into war and wrecked our national balance sheet. And impeded the stem cell research that might now not come in time to save your life. And tipped the court even further to the ideological right. And ignored the climate change crisis. And on and on and on.

ESTHER INGLIS-ARKELL: The frozen calm of normalcy bias (io9)
When disaster strikes, some people lose their heads, some people become cool and effective, but by far most people act as if they've suddenly forgotten the disaster. They behave in surprisingly mundane ways, right up until it's too late. Around the world, researchers are wondering how to combat normalcy bias.

Tom Danehy: Tom takes a perilous climb up Tumamoc in order to get in better shape (Tucson Weekly)
It is, through happenstance and circumstance (a nice way of referring to at least two of the Seven Deadly Sins), that I have arrived at a point in my life where I am in the worst physical shape that I've ever been in. It's 100 percent my fault that I'm here, which means that I get to take 100 percent of the credit when I fix it.

Froma Harrop: How to Get Fit Without Really Trying (Creators Syndicate)
We may not have time for exercise, but there's always time to read about exercising. And while the motivation to exercise may not be tops, the motivation to shop for "aids" to exercise seems forever strong.

Scott Burns: How to Start as a Small Investor (AssetBuilder)
In a recent column you suggested to a reader that they should take their $400,000 and put it in a low-cost index fund such as Vanguard Balanced Index shares. I have no idea what that means, but I hope you might be able to give me some advice as well. I have no 401(k), no retirement pension, and no clue.

Mason Currey: Keep Your Day Job (Slate)
... having too much to do is also an unbeatable motivator. If you can truly only spare a couple hours a day for a particular task, it is amazing how much you can get done in those hours. As Nicholson Baker told me-referring to a time in his life when he was writing and running a nonprofit at the same time-"You find out a way to get more done when you're really busy. You just learn how to fit it in."

Kate Connelly: "Emil and the Detectives: Michael Rosen on the trail of a children's classic" (Guardian)
… what makes the former children's laureate salivate even today is the memory of being able to stand on the street eating mustard-coated sausages. "East Germany was heaven to me as an 11-year-old - that you could stand at tables eating bratwurst. I was such a hick then that I didn't even know what a hotdog was."

Lucy Mangan: "The Family from One End Street by Eve Garnett" (Guardian)
It was as if, with the story of Kate Ruggles' summer-long stay at the eponymous hostelry and enthusiastic embrace of village life, Eve Garnett had peered into my mind and written down exactly what she knew would delight me most. That seemed to me magic of the highest order and I raced off to other shelves to find it again.

How many feature films did baseball great Jackie Robinson star in?

The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) - IMDb

The first, last, and only feature film appearance of Jackie Robinson. Robinson made several television appearances through the years, mostly in broadcast baseball games and talk shows, but this was his one and only feature film, and really the only time he was called on to "act."        Source

The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) is in rotation on Cozi TV this month.

As I recall, in 1950, "The Jackie Robinson Story" came out and it starred Jackie Robinson, Ruby Dee, and Minor Watson. That's the only one I could find.

I remember that Dodgers era well. Although not a fan of baseball, everyone knew Jackie back then - and the hateful things being said about him. Well, he proved them wrong, didn't he...
PS: My son knew Slasher guitarist, Jeff Hanneman and participated in a fund-raising show for him. In fact, he had been bitten by a spider and waited to receive medical care - ending in liver failure. Very sad, he was a fairly young guy...

Robinson's #42 was retired on April 15, 1997, the 50th anniversary of his MLB debut. All players wearing #42 at that time were allowed to retain it until they retired, but no new players were allowed #42. At this time only one player remains from that group in '97, Mariano Rivera, a pitcher for the NY Yankees. He plans to retire at the end of this season. Next season no one will wear #42 in MLB and no one else will ever again... Justly so.

BAFTA Academy Fellowship

Michael Palin

Film and television star Michael Palin, who made his name as a founder of comedy group Monty Python, is to receive one of the British entertainment industry's highest accolades.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) said on Friday that Palin, who turns 70 this month, would be presented with an Academy Fellowship at the organization's annual TV awards ceremony on May 12.

BAFTA Chairman John Willis said the award recognized the contribution Palin had made to the industry over five decades.

Palin started out writing television series and wrote and starred in some of Monty Python's best-known sketches including "Dead Parrot" and "The Lumberjack Song".

NYC Park Re-Named

Adam Yauch

A New York City playground where the late Beastie Boy Adam Yauch learned to ride a bike as a child has been renamed in his honor.

City officials on Friday rechristened Brooklyn's Palmetto Playground as Adam Yauch Park. Yauch's parents and fellow Beastie Boy Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz attended the renaming ceremony.

The rapper known as "MCA" died last May at the age of 47 after a nearly three-year battle with cancer. The gravelly-voiced Yauch helped make the Beastie Boys one of the seminal groups in hip-hop.

The playground includes full and half basketball courts, a community garden, a greenhouse, a small fitness area, an open play space, drinking fountains, and a dog run.

Lifetime Award

William Friedkin

William Friedkin, the U.S. film director who scared up a fright with "The Exorcist" and set pulses racing with thriller "The French Connection" in the 1970s, will get a lifetime achievement award from the Venice Film Festival, organizers said on Thursday.

Friedkin, 77, will also present a restored version of his initially poorly received but now acclaimed 1977 film "Sorcerer" at the August 28-September 7 festival in the Italian city.

Venice film festival director Alberto Barbera said that Friedkin had made major contributions to U.S. cinema "the revolutionary impact of which has not always been recognized."

"Friedkin exploded the rules of documentary filmmaking in several works for television that were seminal for their dry, harsh and unpredictable point of view, and later revolutionized the popular genres of the crime film and the horror film, basically inventing the modern blockbuster with 'The French Connection'," Barbera said in a statement.

Superstorm Sandy Aftermath

Mermaid Parade

It's been more than six months since Superstorm Sandy ravaged the coastal areas of New York and New Jersey, but the deadly storm is on the verge of claiming another high profile victim.

Coney Island's famed Mermaid Parade, an annual event dating back to 1983 in which thousands of people dress up like fantastical sea creatures and march through the streets to welcome the beginning of summer, is on the brink of cancellation because of damage from Sandy.

While the parade route hasn't been affected, the parade's organizer, Coney Island USA, suffered nearly $500,000 in damage when Sandy sent more than five feet of water into its headquarters along Surf Avenue last October. Rebuilding the facility-which includes a museum dedicated to Coney Island as well as a performance space for the area's legendary freak show, burlesque dancers and old-time strongmen-has left the nonprofit group cash-strapped and unable to front the estimated $190,000 cost of the parade.

On Monday, the group will launch a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising the funds needed to hold the parade, which is tentatively scheduled for June 22. It attracted 750,000 people last year and has generated millions in revenues for businesses in Coney Island, which was hard hit by Sandy.

"It is painful to say it, but if we can't raise the money, there will be no Mermaid Parade. For real," Dick Zigun, head of Coney Island USA and the founder of the parade, told Yahoo News. "It would be a blow to the neighborhood and to the city. But we just can't afford it."

Sues Agent Over Copyright

Harper Lee

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "To Kill A Mockingbird," Harper Lee, on Friday sued her literary agent, claiming he tricked her into assigning the copyright on her book to him.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Manhattan against Samuel Pinkus, the son-in-law of Lee's long-time agent, Eugene Winick, who had represented her for more than 40 years. When Winick became ill in 2002, Pinkus diverted several of Winick's clients to his own company, the lawsuit said.

According to the lawsuit, Pinkus in 2007 "engaged in a scheme to dupe" the then 80-year-old Lee into assigning her "To Kill a Mockingbird" copyright without any payment.

Pinkus engineered the transfer of Lee's rights to secure himself "irrevocable" interest in the income derived from her book and to avoid paying legal obligations he owed to his father-in-law's company for royalties that Pinkus allegedly misappropriated, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit also alleged Pinkus failed to respond to offers by publisher HarperCollins to discuss licensing e-book rights and did not respond to the publisher's request for assistance related to the 50th anniversary of the publishing of "To Kill A Mockingbird."

PepsiCo Ending Ties

Lil Wayne

PepsiCo is cutting its ties with Lil Wayne after the rapper made a crude reference to civil rights martyr Emmett Till in a song.

Lil Wayne, one of the biggest stars in pop music, had a deal to promote the company's Mountain Dew soda.

Earlier this week, PepsiCo also pulled an online ad for the neon-colored soda that was criticized for portraying racial stereotypes and making light of violence toward women. The ad was developed by rapper Tyler, the Creator.

PepsiCo said in a statement late Friday that Wayne's "offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand." It declined to provide any further comment on any current promotions it might have in the market with Wayne.

The controversy erupted after Wayne made the reference to Till on Future's song "Karate Chop" earlier this year. He refers to beating someone during a sexual act and says he wants to do as much damage as was done to Till.

Spider Called Pivotal

Jeff Hanneman

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman thought he was on the mend after a spider bite followed by an infection. He'd been writing songs with the band in anticipation of recording a new album later this year.

But in an unusual chain of events, a representative for the band said the bite may have contributed to Hanneman's death more than two years later.

Hanneman died Thursday morning of liver failure at a Los Angeles hospital with his wife, Kathy, by his side, according to Slayer spokeswoman Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald. He was 49.

Robinson-Fitzgerald said Hanneman had been slowly recovering from necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease that nearly cost him his arm. Such an infection can develop from a minor cut or scratch; Robinson-Fitzgerald blamed the spider bite, for which he failed to seek immediate treatment.

Hanneman had several operations to remove dead and dying tissue from his arm, the band said on its website last year.

Fertilizer Plant

Texas

The fertilizer plant in West, Texas, that exploded two weeks ago was a frequent target of theft and sabotage. Not from farmers looking for free soil supplements, apparently, but from people looking to acquire one of the key ingredients for making methamphetamine.

Anhydrous ammonia, a key element in fertilizer production, is also used to make the highly popular drug, as any fan of Breaking Bad is likely aware. (If you're curious, the Riverfront Times, an alt-weekly in St. Louis, explains the role the ammonia plays.) Drug manufacturers, often looking to save on production costs, apparently learned that West Fertilizer was an easy source of cheap raw material. And in a plot more nefarious - and real - than Walt and Jessie's fictional run on methylamine, Reuters reports on the plant's history of tampering.

Police records show West Fertilizer began complaining of repeated thefts from the facility in June 2001, when burglars stole 150 pounds of anhydrous ammonia from storage tanks three nights in a row. Nearly a year later, a plant manager told police that thieves were siphoning four-to-five gallons of the liquefied fertilizer every three days.

After a series of break-ins a few years ago, the company installed a security system, but that wasn't enough of a deterrent.

The last record of tampering was in October 2012, when a 911 caller reported an odor "so strong it can burn your eyes." The firm dispatched Cody Dragoo, an employee often sent after hours to shut leaking valves and look into break-ins. That night, he shut off the valve but reported it had been tampered with.

A view of the great dancing hall inside the Stadtpalais Liechtenstein in Vienna May 2, 2013. The princely palace that launched a revival of Rococo in the mid 19th century, will offer public tours for the first time on Friday after an extensive face-lift. The city palace was once the main residence of the princely family of Liechtenstein, at the time one of Vienna's richest families considered to be at the cutting edge of art and architecture, before their relocation to the tiny Alpine principality. Its four-year, 100 million euro ($130 million) revamp returns the private structure to its prewar glory and opulence, with plastered ceilings, extensive gold leafing, and the original Thonet wood floors.

Welcome!

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican hypocrites?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?

In other words, submissions are welcome.
