Paul Krugman: Trump's War on the Poor (NY Times Column)
The cruelty of these cuts isn't a bug, it's a feature.
Megan Abbott: "The Virgin Suicides: 'They Hadn't Heard Us Calling'"(Criterion)
"With a book like this, no one should really play the characters," Eugenides once mused when asked about the adaptation, "because the girls are seen at such a distance. They're created by the intention of the observer, and there are so many points of view that they don't really exist as an exact entity . . . I tried to think of the girls as a shape-shifting entity with many different heads. Like a hydra, but not monstrous. A nice hydra."
Ian Christie: "The Color of Pomegranates: Parajanov Unbound" (Criterion)
An ancient book in an unfamiliar script; a spoken line of verse, translated as "I am the man whose life and soul are torment"; three pomegranates, bleeding their crimson juice onto white muslin. The opening of The Color of Pomegranates warns us that this life story of the eighteenth-century Armenian poet Sayat-Nova ("King of Songs") will not be a conventional one but rather an exploration of his "inner world
his passions and torments," through symbols drawn from medieval Armenian culture and Christianity, along with director Sergei Parajanov's own imagination.
Mary Beard: Clothes shopping (A Don's Life)
There is an age and money question here of course. No one would, I think, accuse me of squandering my ill- or well-gotten gains on a vast and expensive wardrobe. But I have long learnt that the cheap size 12 that I used to pick with little thought doesn't quite hack it at age 63.
Mary Beard: Barcelona's Festival of the Book (A Don's Life)
There was a bit of sniffiness on the part of some in the audience (about people who only bought one book a year, and what they bought). But I came away thinking that if everyone in the city bought just one book a year then that was a triumph. I was more worried that the men got the books and the women got the roses. As I was quoted in the local papers, "Els homes necessiten mes roses i les dones mes llibres". ["Men need more roses, and women need more books.") Not bad, as a message.
Sam Thielman: "Frank Miller: 'I wasn't thinking clearly when I said those things'" (The Guardian)
After stirring up outrage lambasting Muslims and Wall Street protesters, The Dark Knight Returns creator has been awol from the comics world. He discusses the mentor who got him back on his feet, what he thinks of Donald Trump, and his new prequel to 300.
Michael Gregor, MD: Even Modest Lifestyle Changes in Middle Age May Significantly Extend Your Life (NutritionFacts.org)
"People who newly adopt a healthy lifestyle in middle-age experience a prompt benefit of lower rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality." Researchers found that a switch in mid-life-that is, in our late 40s to early 60s-to a healthy lifestyle that includes at least five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, exercise, and not smoking results in a substantial reduction in mortality over just the next four years.

What is faked in a Pseudocide?
Death
Source
A faked death, also called a pseudocide, is a case in which an individual leaves evidence to suggest that they are dead to mislead others. This is done for a variety of reasons, such as to fraudulently collect insurance money or to avoid capture by law enforcement for some other crime.
People who fake their own deaths sometimes do so by pretend drownings, because it provides a plausible reason for the absence of a body.

We've wondered for 13 years if Ray Gricar was actually dead or merely
committed psuedocide (faked his death) to avoid something.
Alan J answered:
Faked Death.

Death is faked in a pseudocide.

That would be a faked death.

Roy, a Speck of Blue in Deep Red Texas, replied:
Pseudocide is a fancy pants word for faking death. It can come in handy if you wanna cash in on an insurance policy, or to even get the cops off your ass. They'll drop the case if they think you're dead. Great way to get out of paying those doggone parking tickets.
John I from Hawai`i says,
"One's death."

Marc's Guide to Curing Cancer
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.
