Tom Danehy: "Hey, new Pope ... Tom has a request" (Tucson Weekly)
… my son (the provocateur) posed the question, "What if Jesus came back today, went on Fox News, and announced that He thinks that gay people should be allowed to marry? What would all the Bible thumpers think?" I said, "The first thing they would want to know is who's that black guy who's pretending to be Jesus."

During the big health care fight, the right told older Americans that Obamacare was grabbing money from their Medicare and giving it to young people. Now it tells young workers that Medicare and Social Security are draining their take-home pay to support retirees sitting around the pool.
Paul Krugman: The Excel Depression (New York Times)
In this age of information, math errors can lead to disaster. NASA's Mars Orbiter crashed because engineers forgot to convert to metric measurements; JPMorgan Chase's "London Whale" venture went bad in part because modelers divided by a sum instead of an average. So, did an Excel coding error destroy the economies of the Western world?

Queen Victoria, but Elizabeth is not too very far behind and won't give the crown to Charles

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
Queen Victoria, the namesake of the Victorian Age, held the throne from
1837 until her death in 1901, at age 81.
Charlie replied:
Victoria
Though Elizabeth II is catching up.
Long ago life was clean
Sex was bad and obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the lords
Croquet lawns, village greens
Victoria was my queen

Being a bit of a Britophile, I know that Queen Victoria is the longest reigning monarch of Britain, or any British kingdom. She took the throne on June 20, 1837 and ruled until January 22, 1901. Victoria was an adult throughout her reign, taking the throne a few weeks after her eighteenth birthday. She died aged 81. In September, 2015, Our Elizabeth will overtake Victoria's lengthy reign - God Save Our Queen!!
The two Queens, Elizabeth on the left, and Victoria on the right.
PS: Don't know about anyone else, but I am almost afraid to turn the TV on of late. All this week the afternoons have been filled by "Special Reports," one worse than the next. Poor Kim Jong Un, all that bloviating has been downed out by a REAL threat or two, or three...
Adam answered:
It's still Queen Victoria. Elizabeth II has 3-4 yrs to pass her.

And, Joe S replied:
Victoria, but Elizabeth II is catching up. That's all I'm going to say about that because we fought a war so I wouldn't have to keep up with British royalty.

A TV miniseries and movie comeback will mean more Emmy Awards than expected at this year's ceremony.
The TV academy's board of governors said it's reversing its 2012 decision to combine lead and supporting acting honors for such projects.
In a statement, the board said that because of the "unanticipated resurgence" of TV miniseries and movies, it had voted to reinstate the separate acting categories.
That means instead of the two planned longform acting awards there will be four: best actress and actor and best supporting actress and actor for a miniseries or movie.
The awards will be held Sept. 22 and broadcast by CBS.

Wanda Sykes is living up to her reputation for keeping it real. The comedian and actress has signed a first look deal for unscripted projects with NBC/Universal Television's alternative studio, a rep confirms to TheWrap.
The comedian and Page Hurwitz's Push It Productions will develop and produce the unscripted projects.
Hurwitz brings a strong background in producing to the deal. She executive produced Rosie O'Donnell's daily talk show on OWN, as well as the reality competition, "Last Man Standing," and Jerry Seinfeld's "The Marriage Ref" for NBC.
This latest pact is the latest in the studio's big sweep of unscripted production deals, which include Jason Ehrlich ("The Bachelor"), David A. Hurwitz ("Fear Factor") and Lee Metzger ("The Voice").
The 66th Cannes Film Festival will pay tribute to Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, who starred in many films together, including "The Long, Hot Summer," which won Newman a best actor award at the festival 55 years ago.
On Thursday, Cannes President Gilles Jacob announced this year's nominees for the festival standing beneath a photo of the married couple taken during their filming of "A New Kind of Love" in 1963.
The festival said the image is an opportunity "both to pay tribute to the memory of Paul Newman, who passed away in 2008, and to mark its undying admiration for Joanne Woodward, his wife and most favored co-star." It said, "The vision of these two lovers caught in a vertiginous embrace, oblivious of the world around them, invites us to experience cinema with all the passion of an everlasting desire."
Last year, to celebrate 65th anniversary, the official Cannes logo featured a demure Marilyn Monroe blowing out a candle on a birthday cake.

At 97, retired Lt. Col. Richard Cole can still fly and land a vintage B-25 with a wide grin and a wave out the cockpit window to amazed onlookers.
David Thatcher, 91, charms admiring World War II history buffs with detailed accounts of his part in the 1942 Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, in which he earned a Silver Star.
Retired Lt. Col. Edward Saylor, 93, still gets loud laughs from crowds for his one liners about the historic bombing raid 71 years ago Thursday that helped to boost a wounded nation's morale in the aftermath of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.
Cole, Thatcher and Saylor - three of the four surviving crew members from the history-making bombing run - are at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle for a final public reunion of the Doolittle Raiders. They decided to meet at Eglin because it is where they trained for their top-secret mission in the winter of 1942, just weeks after the Japanese devastated the American fleet at Pearl Harbor.
They have also saved a bottle of Hennessy cognac from 1896, the year mission commander James Doolittle was born. The Raiders had said the final two survivors would open the bottle, but they have since decided that the four survivors will meet in private later this year for the toast.
Palestinian activists tried to derail an ambitious European documentary shot in Jerusalem this week, complaining that the film would reinforce an image of Israeli sovereignty over the deeply divided city.
Producers of the Franco-German "24h Jerusalem", which sets out to depict a day-in-the-life of the troubled city, said on Friday that their plans had been badly disrupted by a last minute campaign of "intimidation and harassment".
"We very much regret what has happened, but we are still here and we will carry on shooting," said producer Thomas Kufus, hoping to recapture the success of his ground-breaking 2008 project - the day-long "24h Berlin" film.
With some 70 camera crews working across the city from 6.00 a.m. on Thursday to 6.00 a.m. on Friday, the project is one of the most ambitious documentaries ever shot in Jerusalem and had the blessing of the local Israeli authorities.
NBC says it's pulling an episode of its serial killer drama "Hannibal" out of sensitivity to recent violence, including the Boston bombings.
NBC said Friday that the episode, which was to air next week, features a character who brainwashes children to kill other children.
The show's producer, Bryan Fuller, asked NBC to pull the episode, citing the Newtown, Mass., school shooting in December and this week's Boston Marathon attack, NBC said. The episode, the fourth for the freshman series, will be replaced by another "Hannibal" hour.
A "clip package" with scenes from the unaired episode will be available online next week, with commentary by Fuller, NBC said. Scenes involving the children won't be included, the network said.

A bomb-themed episode of U.S. television crime drama "Castle" has been rescheduled because of its close timing to Monday's deadly bombings in Boston.
Broadcaster ABC said on Thursday that the April 22 episode of "Castle," which follows a crime novelist and New York police detective, will switch dates with the April 29 episode.
Series star Stana Katic said on Twitter that the move was made "out of respect" for the victims from the twin blasts near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The bombings killed At least three people and injured 176.

The Fox TV series "Glee" will keep on singing for another two years.
The network announced Friday that it has renewed the show about music-loving students through 2014-2015 - its 6th season.
In a statement, Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly said "Glee" continues to break new ground as a rare successful TV musical comedy. The show been a music hit as well, with more than 50 million downloads of "Glee" tracks and worldwide album sales of more than 13 million.
"Glee" has expanded from its original focus on the McKinley High School glee club to the college world of Rachel and Kurt, played by cast members Lea Michele and Chris Colfer.
The material sat in a Florida storage facility for many years, apparently forgotten, until the storage company finally sold it off in bulk because payments had not been made.
Only then did a buyer open the boxes and discover what is being dubbed "the lost archive" of the Beach Boys, one of America's greatest and most commercially successful bands.
The collection of thousands of documents included what seems to be the band's first royalty check, for $990, dozens of signed contracts, and handwritten and copied scores to "Good Vibrations", "California Girls" and many other hits from their heyday in the 1960s.
The story of the collection's provenance is somewhat convoluted. Owen said the material was apparently put in storage in the mid-1970s by a relative of a band member who felt it needed to be in a safe place. The cache included one box of about 15 Stetson hats the Beach Boys wore on stage during their hippie period.
