Trivia Question of the Day

What singing group performed the title songs for both "Gilligan's Island" and "Davy Crockett"?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What group has had thirty-six US Top 40 hits (the most by an American rock band)?

   The Beach Boys                                                      Source

The Beach Boys are an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine.

The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band", and Allmusic has stated that their "unerring ability ... made them America's first, best rock band." The group has had thirty-six United States Top 40 hits (the most by an American rock band) and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number-one singles.        Source

Alan J was first, and correct, with:
   The Beach Boys

Charlie said:
I'd have been ashamed of myself if I'd had to look this up. At first, the cynic in me thought it might be somebody who really sucked, but then I realized who it probably was, and they don't suck at all.
There are (or have been) American bands I think are (or were) greater (Byrds,Allman Brothers, and maybe some others, but not Grand Funk Railroad), but the Beach Boys certainly rate the appellation "great."

Adam answered:
   The Beach Boys.

Dave wrote:
Of course it had to be a US Rock Band that dominated the charts in the '60s or '70s, because those were the years of The Single, and not an individual artist. The only band which came to mind was the Beach Boys and a google check confirmed my guess. Too bad Brian Wilson went nuts and ended their run.

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
   The Beach Boys

Marian replied:
   Beach Boys

Sally said:

I never cared for their music. They were West Coast, and I was not...
PS: I forgot to mention yesterday, that the singer Pat Boone is a direct descendant of Daniel. I know that because I was in the audience the night he won the, "Ted Mack, Original Amateur Hour" contest. Ted made reference several time that night to their relationship, and teased him for not wearing the coon-skin cap. I classify Pat with the Beach Boys, that limpy-wimpy style of music.
Now Elvis, he was a whole other story!!

Dale of Diamond Springs took the day off.

And, Joe S     answered:
Oh, I hate to say it but it's The Beach Boys. I think to call them a rock band is stretching it a bit. I really don't like The Beach Boys. I don't like Rush or Led Zeppelin either. I change the station when any of that caterwauling is playing. Oh yeah, and I don't like Blood Sweat and Tears either. Just about anything else pleases me, well except for that insipid English crap brought over with the "British Invasion."

Professor Bans Citing

"Fox News"

Back in the day, teachers often scoffed at using encyclopedias as serious academic references. These days, it's Wikipedia, definitely, and - at one public university in West Virginia - Fox News.

A syllabus for a political science course at West Liberty University instructs students that they must filter out two potential research sources, reports WTOV, a nearby NBC affiliate.

According to Fox News, ironically enough, the syllabus says:

DO NOT use
    1) The Onion - this is not news this is literally a parody
    2) Fox News - The tagline "Fox News" makes me cringe. Please do not subject me to this biased news station. I would almost rather you print off an article from the Onion

No other media or research sources - such as, say, just for example, MSNBC - appear to be prohibited outright.

Record Sales Double

Grammy Performers

Grammy performers did not go home with just trophies last weekend. Winning bands like indie-pop trio fun. and British folk band Mumford & Sons saw sales of their singles and albums more than double after appearing on the music industry honors show.

Album of the Year winner's Mumford & Sons saw sales of its "I Will Wait" single shoot up 116 percent, while Australian artist Gotye's "Making Mirrors" album from 2011 increased 124 percent from the week before the annual music telecast.

Rising R&B star Frank Ocean, who took home two Grammys, saw sales of his album "Channel Orange" climb 140 percent.

Contract For US Debut To Auction

The Clash

The legal contract for the American debut of the English punk rock band The Clash is being offered by a New Hampshire auction house, among other band items.

The Clash documents dated Jan. 23, 1979, were drafted for a performance at New York's Palladium the following month. They include a diagram of the stage and a proposed advertising layout.

The band, known for "London Calling," ''Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah," would play the Palladium several more times that year.

A rare Fender guitar used by singer Joe Strummer and other items also were offered online Thursday by RR Auction in Amherst. Much of the collection belonged to Gerry Harrington, Strummer's former manager, who died Feb. 9.

Donates $10,000

Charlie Sheen

There's a 15-year-old Florida girl who didn't really know much about Charlie Sheen before this week - but does now.

The actor wired $10,000 to Teagan Marti and her family on Thursday for a therapy dog to help in her rehabilitation from injuries sustained when she plummeted 100 feet from a Wisconsin amusement park ride in 2010.

Teagan suffered brain, spine, pelvis and internal injuries in July 2010 when nets and air bags that were supposed to catch riders on a free-fall ride were not raised. She had convinced her family to make the trip from Florida to Extreme World in Wisconsin Dells after seeing the amusement park's Terminal Velocity ride on the Travel Channel.

She was hospitalized in Wisconsin and Florida for three months. She initially had no use of her arms or legs but through physical therapy is able to walk again with a walker.

Teagan's mother, Julie Marti, said they are financially in trouble from the medical bills and her recent divorce. Their house is being foreclosed upon and insurance isn't covering physical therapy anymore, she said. She had no idea how they would pay for the English Golden Retriever puppy.

Teacher Pension Fund Pulls Money From Gun Makers

NYC

New York City's teacher pension fund has sold its stocks of publicly traded firearms manufacturers, becoming the largest U.S. public pension fund to do so in response to the school shootings in Connecticut, the city's top financial officer said.

The $46.6 billion fund divested all its holdings in five companies, for investments valued at $13.5 million as of January 26, a spokesman for New York City Comptroller John Liu said on Friday.

"There is no need to support these companies, whose products can destroy lives and shatter communities in the blink of an eye," Liu said in a statement. "Our investment portfolio gains nothing by doing business with these firms."

The five companies from which the New York City fund divested are Alliant Techsystems Inc., Olin Corp., Forjas Taurus SA, Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. and Sturm, Ruger & Co..

Opposes Possum Bill

Bob Barker

Former game show host Bob Barker is telling North Carolina lawmakers that caging a live possum for a New Year's Eve event in the mountains isn't good show business.

Barker wrote this week to a state Senate committee's members asking them to oppose a bill that would let the organizer of the Brasstown "Possum Drop" keep suspending a possum in a box every Dec. 31 and lowering it gently to the ground.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals complained about the event. A judge ruled state regulators don't have explicit authority to permit the display. A House bill approved this week would change that.

Barker says the event is inhumane and that loopholes for animal abuse shouldn't be created.

Tiffany Sues

Costco

A Tiffany & Co. subsidiary is suing Costco, claiming the wholesale club operator has been selling engagement rings wrongly labeled "Tiffany" rings.

Tiffany and Company alleges trademark infringement, counterfeiting, unfair competition, injury to business reputation, false advertising and deceptive business practices. The company says the rings are not in fact Tiffany rings, nor are they in any way properly associated with Tiffany.

The retailer said that a customer alerted Tiffany in November to the sale of what was promoted on in-store signs as "Tiffany" diamond engagement rings at a Costco store in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Tiffany immediately launched an investigation and said that it learned that Costco has been selling different types of rings for many years identified as "Tiffany" rings, without the company's knowledge. The jewelry retailer said that Costco led its customers to believe they were buying authentic Tiffany products at significant discounts.

In Memory

Richard Collins

A blacklisted screenwriter who later named names to Communist hunters during the McCarthy era has died in California. Richard Collins was 98.

His son, Michael Collins, tells the Los Angeles Times that Collins died Thursday of pneumonia in Ventura.

Collins was one of 19 writers and directors called by the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 in a probe of supposed Communist subversion in Hollywood. He wasn't asked to testify but 10 who refused to answer questions about their beliefs were jailed in what has widely been called a witch hunt.

Collins was subpoenaed again in 1951 and identified more than 20 colleagues as Communist sympathizers. He later expressed regrets.

He went on to have a three-decade career in TV writer and producer on shows including "Bonanza" and "Matlock."

W. Watts Biggers

William Watts Biggers, the co-creator of the cartoon "Underdog," the mild-mannered canine shoeshine boy who turned into a caped superhero to rescue his girlfriend, Sweet Polly Purebred, has died. He was 85.

Family friend Derek Tague says Biggers, who went by "Buck," died unexpectedly at his Plymouth, Mass., home on Sunday.

The native of Avondale Estates, Ga., worked for the New York City advertising firm DFS when he accepted an assignment from the agency's largest client, General Mills, to create television cartoons to promote its breakfast cereals. The most famous was "Underdog," which debuted on NBC in 1964.

The canine superhero, voiced by comic actor Wally Cox, also battled villains including mad scientist Simon Bar Sinister, and a gangster wolf Riff Raff.

Biggers also helped create "King Leonardo and His Short Subjects" and "Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales."

After General Mills pulled out of the animation business, Biggers became vice president of promotion and creative services at NBC.

The family said Biggers "delighted in the enduring appeal of his 'Underdog' franchise," including the balloon that appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 2007 live-action film.

Biggers also wrote for publications including TV Guide, Family Circle and Reader's Digest, and wrote several novels, including "The Man Inside" and "Hold Back the Tide."

Biggers' wife of 39 years, Grace, died in 1989. He is survived by his daughter, Victoria Biggers, his son, W. Watts Biggers, Jr., and longtime companion Nancy Purbeck.

Welcome!

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican hypocrites?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?

In other words, submissions are welcome.
