Paul Krugman: Why Does America Hate Its Children? (NY Times Column)
Reasons child care should be a key election issue. … What this means is that we've established a basically vicious system under which children can't get the help they need unless their parents find jobs that don't exist. And a growing body of evidence says that this system is destructive as well as cruel.

John Patterson: "Kathy Bates: 'I told Clint that after 50 years, I feel like I've hit the big time'" (The Guardian)
With her fourth nomination for an Oscar, Kathy Bates talks about overcoming brutal criticism about her looks, her pride at playing real women and why she loved working with Clint Eastwood.

Mary Beard: The terror of King's Parade (TLS)
My beef can't be with the local councillors for agreeing to the idea of solid protection for what might be a vulnerable location (I am pretty sure that, had I been a councillor, I would have voted for protection of some kind). My beef is that no one seems to have stood out for the kind of barrier that might have blended in with the surroundings.

Mary Beard: Prince Harry and the Emperor Tiberius (TLS)
It has been hard not to become drawn into the Harry and Meghan story - and hard for most of us not to be drawn into speculation about motivations, feelings and aspirations about which we know very little. The certainties bandied around, and the rush to judgement on all sides, have been insidiously unsettling. The truth is that the vast majority of us really have no clue whether the Sussexes have been frightened away by the hostile and sometimes racist media, or whether they are looking for a more glitzy, self-serving celebrity lifestyle across the Atlantic. We haven't a clue whether […]

Mary Beard: "Meghan and the 'Livia Phenomenon'" (TLS)
I wrongly thought that the Harry and Meghan story would be a flash in the pan, quickly overshadowed by all the really important things in the world. But as it has turned into a full-grown bonfire and has become important for the issues that it raises, I think it is worth having a more serious look at what the Roman world might tell us here - more serious, I mean, than my casual comparison of Prince Harry and the emperor Tiberius (though it I do take credit for a neat comparison never to my knowledge made before!)

Andrew Pulver: All Tilda Swinton's films - ranked! (The Guardian)
1. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
Swinton was perhaps not natural casting for this authentic nightmare of a story: an American wife and mother whose attempts to bond with her son fall foul of his resolute commitment to sadistic, manipulative cruelty. But she pulls it off brilliantly, suggesting all the uncertainty, frustration and panic that life brings her. In this, she is aided by director Lynne Ramsay's distinctively oblique visual style, going against the grain and dwelling on unexpected, revelatory moments. This is, and remains, a monumental film, and should have won every award going.

Dave Simpson: "Midas touch: how to create the perfect James Bond song" (The Guardian)
Shirley Bassey set the template - now Billie Eilish will create the theme for No Time to Die. Are these sultry anthems, usually sung by women, actually subverting 007?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

She was born Matoaka, known as Amonute, then baptized as a Christian with the name Rebecca. By what name is she more famously known?

       Pocahontas                                                      Source

Pocahontas (born Matoaka, known as Amonute, c. 1596 - March 1617) was a Native American woman notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. She was the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of a network of tributary tribes in the Tsenacommacah, encompassing the Tidewater region of Virginia.

Pocahontas was captured and held for ransom by the Colonists during hostilities in 1613. During her captivity, she was encouraged to convert to Christianity and was baptized under the name Rebecca. She married tobacco planter John Rolfe in April 1614 at age 17, and she bore their son Thomas Rolfe in January 1615.

Numerous places, landmarks, and products in the United States have been named after Pocahontas. Her story has been romanticized over the years, with some aspects discovered to likely be fictional. Many of the stories told about her by John Smith have been contested by her documented descendants.[5] She is a subject of art, literature, and film, and many famous people have claimed to be among her descendants through her son, including members of the First Families of Virginia, First Lady Edith Wilson, American Western actor Glenn Strange, Las Vegas performer Wayne Newton, and astronomer Percival Lowell.        Source

   The original cultural appropriation
I had a Little Golden Book of her life that white-washed the sad story of this forced child bride. After being married off, she was taken far from her home and shortly after died of one of the diseases that ravaged her people. Pocahontas never saw much of the colors of the wind in her 22 years. It's no wonder Trump uses her name as an insult. It signals his intentions.

Dave responded:
Pocahontas. The actual history is pretty damning of the English colonists. The so-called "history" I learned in school about her saving Captain John Smith from being killed by her tribe is total fiction, an invention of Smith's in a letter to promote her visit to London, which was a pubic relations stunt intended to promote the colony.

Anecdotes

Prejudice

• When African-American jazz musician Louis Armstrong was a little boy, he learned about the Jim Crow laws in New Orleans. One day, he got on a streetcar, and he sat in a front seat, not knowing that the streetcar was segregated and that black passengers were supposed to sit in the back. A white woman told him to sit in the back, but young Louis simply made faces at her. Angry, the white woman stood up, grabbed Louis, and hauled him to one of the seats in the back of the bus. By the way, early in his career, Mr. Armstrong was riding in a car through New York City's Central Park when the radiator cap blew off. Immediately, police officers surrounded the automobile and searched its African-American passengers to see if they were carrying firearms. Of course, not everyone is prejudiced. Mr. Armstrong was friends with white jazz trombonist Jack Teagarden, who once told him in the slang of the time, "You a spade and I'm an ofay. We got the same soul. Let's blow." By the way, as a very young boy, Louis wanted to learn to play the cornet, but he didn't have enough money to buy one. Fortunately, a Russian Jewish immigrant family he worked for, the Karnofskys, loaned him the money to buy a cornet. This is fortunate because Mr. Armstrong was very influential; he blazed a path for so many other jazz musicians. Dizzy Gillespie once said about Mr. Armstrong, "No him, no me."

• The great black dancer Bill Robinson, aka Mr. Bojangles, once was in an all-night diner at 4 a.m. He ordered a meal, but the server told him, "We don't serve your kind." Mr. Bojangles took out his gun, laid it on the table, then gave his order again. This time he was served, but after eating he was arrested by a rookie deputy. However, he was immediately released because he was a friend of the sheriff. Mr. Bojangles always took steps to become friendly with police officers in every town he played. His wife was also very good at public relations, writing the chief of police in each town her husband played to give warm wishes to the chief's wife and to give them free tickets to the show. By the way, Mr. Bojangles had a serious weakness for vanilla ice cream, and reportedly ate four to eight quarts per day.

• Benny Goodman, a white, Jewish jazz musician, formed the Benny Goodman Trio. The group consisted of himself, drummer Gene Krupa, and pianist Teddy Wilson. In addition to creating excellent jazz, the group represented a major step forward in race relations because Mr. Wilson was black. Previously, white and black musicians had not played together in public. At the time the group was formed, the 1930s, racism was prevalent in the United States. For example, in 1931, Earl Hines and the members of his jazz band were not allowed to walk on the sidewalks in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, because they were black. They had no choice but to walk in the streets.

Problem-Solving

• Arturo Toscanini had poor eyesight - he memorized his scores so that he didn't need to refer to them during performances or rehearsals. He once wanted perfection in the tinkling of some very small antique cymbals to be used in Berlioz' "Queen Mab" scherzo. Several musicians failed to meet Toscanini's standards, so Sam Borodkin - who played such instruments as the bass drum, glockenspiel, tam-tam, and gong - said that he would try to do it. Mr. Borodkin succeeded brilliantly - but through the use of a trick. Instead of using two antique cymbals and hitting them against each other, he used a metal triangle stick and hit it against one antique cymbal. Because Toscanini had such poor eyesight, and because Mr. Borodkin was bent over his music stand, hiding the metal triangle stick, the trick succeeded in fooling Maestro Toscanini. By the way, someone was amazed at Maestro Toscanini's phenomenal memory - as demonstrated by his conducting without a score in front of him - and asked, "Tell me, maestro, how do you learn all those scores from memory?" Toscanini replied brusquely, "I learn them."

Kills Off Fox

Di$ney

The Walt Disney Company has formally dropped the legacy Fox name from the studio brands following its acquisition last year of the 21st Century Fox, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

The new name for the 20th Century Fox will now simply be 20th Century Studios, and the art-house arm Fox Searchlight Pictures will become Searchlight Pictures.

No formal decisions have been made on the television side about adjusting the 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios brands.

While Disney acquired 21st Century Fox last March for $71.3 billion, including the film and TV studios, the name of Fox Corp., as led by CEO Lachlan Murdoch remained unchanged, leading to some potential brand confusion.

The name 20th Century Fox was formed following the merger of the film studios Twentieth Century Pictures and Fox Film Corporation in 1935. Since then, the legacy studio has released films such as "Aliens," "Titanic," "Home Alone," "Die Hard," "Planet of the Apes" and more along with its art deco logo and iconic orchestral theme music. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. then purchased 20th Century Fox in the 1980s.

Will No Longer Voice Apu

Hank Azaria

Hank Azaria says he is officially stepping down as the voice of Apu on "The Simpsons."

"I won't be doing the voice anymore, unless there's someway to transition it or something," Azaria said in an interview with SlashFilm. "What they're going to do with the character is their call. It's up to them and they haven't sorted it out yet. All we've agreed on is I won't do the voice anymore."

Reps for the show declined to comment. Reps for Azaria did not immediately return Variety's request for comment.

Calls for Azaria, who has voiced the Indian Kwik-E-Mart owner for decades, to stop playing Apu intensified in 2017 after comedian Hari Kondabolu released the documentary "The Problem With Apu." The doc explored how people of South Asian descent felt about growing up with Apu as one of their only representatives on American television.

'Old Town Road'

Sam Elliott

Sam Elliott uses his incomparable drawl to recite the lyrics of Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" in a Western saloon in a teaser for an upcoming Super Bowl LIV commercial.

The spot finds Elliott in his full-on "Stranger from The Big Lebowski" cowboy persona as he sits down at the bar at the dusty watering hole and forebodingly speaks the biggest song of 2019's verses to the saloon's patrons.

"I got the horses in the back. Horse tack is attached. Hat is matte black. I got the boots that's black to match," Elliott growls. "Ridin' on a horse. Ha! You can whip your Porsche. I been in the valley. You ain't been up off that porch, now. Can nobody tell me nothing. You can't tell me nothing."

What brought the beloved actor and the Grammy-nominated song together? Doritos, with the combo serving as an advertisement for the brand's Cool Ranch chips. Doritos dubbed the ad revealed Friday a "teaser" for another commercial coming February 2nd, 2020, Super Bowl Sunday.

Not All The Same

Girl Scout Cookies

For many places around the country, it's Girl Scout Cookie season - time to break out the Samoas and Tagalongs.

Or, are they Caramel deLites and Peanut Butter Patties?

Depending on where you live, your local Girl Scouts may be using different bakeries, meaning the cookies you're buying at your grocery store could be different from the ones your family is getting back home.

There are more than 100 Girl Scout councils across the United States, with many states having multiple councils. Each council determines which bakery it wants to license with - ABC Bakers or Little Brownie Bakers.

Each local council sets their own price "based on its needs and knowledge of the local market," the Girl Scouts say.

9 Years Longer

Healthcare

Money can't buy happiness, but it can make a big difference when it comes to your health. A new study published in the Journals of Gerontology found that wealthy people in both the U.S. and England live nine years longer than those who struggle financially.

In the study, researchers looked at data from the Gateway to Global Aging Data on 14,803 people aged 50 and up from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS), as well as 10,754 individuals from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and followed them for 10 years to see whether people in England had a longer life expectancy than those in the U.S.

The researchers specifically focused not just on people who lived longer, but on those who maintained a good quality of life in the senior years, free of age-related disabilities.

The study found that - not surprisingly - the biggest socioeconomic factor that influenced whether people lived healthier, longer lives was wealth. According to a press release from the University College London, "at age 50 the wealthiest men in England and the U.S. lived around an additional 31 'healthy' years compared to around 22-23 years for those in the poorest wealth groups. Women from the wealthiest groups from the U.S. and England lived around an additional 33 'healthy' [years] compared to 24.6 and 24 years from the poorest wealth groups in England and the U.S. respectively."

The researchers also looked at education levels and found that those who were highly educated had more disability-free years compared to those who were less educated. But the difference was smaller between those two groups, proving that wealth (or lack thereof) was more influential when it came to the number of functional, healthy years in old age.

Most Widely Consumed Oil

America

New UC Riverside research shows soybean oil not only leads to obesity and diabetes, but could also affect neurological conditions like autism, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, and depression.

Used for fast food frying, added to packaged foods, and fed to livestock, soybean oil is by far the most widely produced and consumed edible oil in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In all likelihood, it is not healthy for humans.

It certainly is not good for mice. The new study, published this month in the journal Endocrinology, compared mice fed three different diets high in fat: soybean oil, soybean oil modified to be low in linoleic acid, and coconut oil.

The team determined a number of genes in mice fed soybean oil were not functioning correctly. One such gene produces the "love" hormone, oxytocin. In soybean oil-fed mice, levels of oxytocin in the hypothalamus went down.

Additionally, the team notes the findings only apply to soybean oil -- not to other soy products or to other vegetable oils.

Causes 1 in 5 Deaths

Sepsis

The number of deaths from sepsis worldwide is much higher than previously thought, with an estimated 20% of people dying from the life-threatening condition, according to a new study.

The study, published today (Jan. 16) in the journal The Lancet, estimated that in 2017, 49 million people developed sepsis and 11 million died from the illness. That's more than double the number of deaths previously estimated. (A recent study estimated only 5 million deaths from sepsis globally.) It's also more than the number of deaths from cancer, which kills an estimated 9.6 million people each year, according to the World Health Organization.

More than half of the sepsis cases in 2017 occurred among children, many of whom were newborns, the authors said.

"We are alarmed to find sepsis deaths are much higher than previously estimated, especially as the condition is both preventable and treatable," study senior author Dr. Mohsen Naghavi, a professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, said in a statement. "We need renewed focus on sepsis prevention among newborns and on tackling antimicrobial resistance, an important driver of the condition."

Painting Hidden In Wall Is Authentic

Gustav Klimt

Authorities in the Italian town of Piacenza on Friday confirmed a painting found hidden in a wall of the local art gallery was by the Austrian master Gustav Klimt, ending doubts over its authenticity.

Workers discovered the painting in December in a plastic bag concealed inside the wall of the Ricci Oddi Gallery from which it was stolen in 1997. They came across a little door which revealed the masterpiece, while clearing the ivy off the outside wall.

When the painting vanished 23 years ago police said they believed thieves had used a fishing line to hook it off the wall and haul it up through an open skylight to the gallery roof where the frame was discarded.

A skilled forgery of the painting, wrapped up and posted to a disgraced politician, was seized by authorities a month later, adding to the mystery.

The Klimt is considered particularly important because shortly before its disappearance an art student realised it was painted over another work previously believed lost - a portrait of a young lady that had not been seen since 1912 - making it the only "double" Klimt known to the art world.
