roger ebert's journal: Making out is its own reward
Fifty years ago, a brief letter to the editor of a student newspaper led to a national furor over academic freedom. When it broke in 1959, the Leo Koch Case dominated front pages and newscasts. It remained a story for three years. Today it is so thoroughly forgotten that not even Wikipedia, which knows everything, has heard of it.

The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction is awarded each year to an American author whose book in some way captures the spirit of American life. Early in 2009, I wondered what sort of snapshot of the U.S. one could develop by reading each of this past decade's winners. So I did. And what did America look like in the Aughts?
Paul Reiser: A Teachable Leno Moment (huffingtonpost.com)
I've known Jay Leno forever. Our wives are friends and he knows my children. This week, I found myself in the absurd position of trying to explain the politics of the entertainment industry to my nine-year-old.
The 'What ever happened to... Where are they now?' Edition
Every now and again, an article appears about what a former 'Celebrity', e.g. an actor/actress, politician, author, musician or sports star, is now doing in their present state of obscurity and where they're doing it.
Is there a former 'Celebrity' that you'd be interested in knowing where they are and what they're doing?

They used a food that has no colors found in nature - Jello.

Jell-o Crystals

Jim from CA, retired to ID, answered:
A paste was made from jello

Rainbow Horses ... is this some early, subliminal Hollywood thing about sexual orientation? "Ah, he's such a pretty horse, I could just eat him!" ... "Well of course you could dear, he's covered in Jello Crystals!"

Well, doesn't everybody know that in the movie, "The Wizard of Oz," when Dorothy and the boys arrive at the Emerald City, they ride in a carriage drawn by horses of a different color. Of course, they used Jell-O powder paste on two different horses to color those horses! The relevant scenes had to be shot quickly, before the horses started to lick it off - I think...

MTV is joining the major broadcast networks and several cable channels for an all-star telethon for Haitian earthquake relief on Jan. 22.
Networks showing the telethon are ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, BET, the CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT. It will also be available internationally.
Haitian-born entertainer Wyclef Jean will helm the show from New York, and George Clooney will host the Los Angeles part. CNN's Anderson Cooper will be in Haiti.
The show will benefit Jean's Yele Haiti Foundation, as well as UNICEF, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, and the Red Cross.
Gisele Bundchen has donated 1.5 million dollars to the Haiti earthquake relief effort, reports said Friday as the army of celebrities offering support to the Caribbean nation swelled its ranks.
People magazine quoted a source close to Bundchen -- the highest paid model in the world with annual earnings of around 35 million dollars -- as saying she was "so moved, she knew what she had to do to help."
News of Bundchen's donation came as pop icon Madonna pledged 250,000 dollars to Partners in Health, which provides health services in the impoverished Caribbean island nation.
Power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated one million dollars to Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF/Doctors Without Borders) for the organization's operations in Haiti.

Roseanne Barr will be the top draw for the inaugural Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival, scheduled for Feb. 19-21, co-founder Michael Moore said Friday. Her show, he promised, will be "funny and caustic" - no surprise for viewers of her namesake TV program that won four Emmys during its nine-year run.
Also appearing will be independent filmmaker John Waters, whose credits include "Hairspray," "Pink Flamingos" and "Serial Mom." He will perform his one-man show, "This Filthy World."
Jeff Garlin, a star and executive producer of the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm" who established the festival with Moore, will perform onstage and host a nightly "talk show" during the three-day event.
Also in the Traverse City lineup are rising stars Whitney Cummings ("Live! Nude! Comedy!") and Mike Birbiglia ("This American Life"); sketch comedy duo Teenager of the Year; and improv team TJ and Dave.
NBC neared a deal Friday with "Tonight" host Conan O'Brien to leave the network, freeing Jay Leno to reclaim the late-night show he stewarded for 17 years, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.
Top NBC Universal executives and representatives for O'Brien on Friday were close to settling details of his departure, said the person, who lacked authority to discuss the issue and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The focus has been on how much O'Brien, who has time left on his NBC contract, would be paid for leaving and what limits NBC may put on his future employment at another network.
Leno's prime-time weeknight show, which premiered last September, got its cancellation notice Sunday. Leno had reigned as ratings champ as host of "Tonight" but drew disappointing the exact same ratings with his experiment in prime time.
The University of Pennsylvania is home to papers documenting the literary career and life of rabbi-turned-author Chaim Potok.
The collection includes correspondence, writings, lectures, sermons, articles, memorabilia and fan mail for the man who wrote "The Chosen."
Penn announced Friday that the Potok collection is housed at the university's rare book and manuscript library. Potok left the papers to Penn in his will.
Potok was a Penn alumnus who also taught at the Ivy League school in Philadelphia. He died of brain cancer in 2002 at age 73.

Prosecutor Balks at sentencing absent Polanski
LOS ANGELES - A prosecutor filed legal briefs Friday strongly reiterating his opposition to sentencing movie director Roman Polanski in absentia in a 32-year-old sex case.
Insisting Polanski must appear in person in a Los Angeles courtroom, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren characterized the director as "a fugitive and convicted child rapist (who) must not be permitted to instruct this court how to proceed."
Walgren objected to Polanski's request during a hearing earlier this month. Another hearing is set for Jan. 22.
In his 11-page court filing, Walgren said the "unique high-publicity nature of the case would provide the greatest deterrent effort for others considering fleeing the court's jurisdiction."

Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing - an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David's reign.
The breakthrough could mean that portions of the Bible were written centuries earlier than previously thought. (The Bible's Old Testament is thought to have been first written down in an ancient form of Hebrew.)
Until now, many scholars have held that the Hebrew Bible originated in the 6th century B.C., because Hebrew writing was thought to stretch back no further. But the newly deciphered Hebrew text is about four centuries older, scientists announced this month.
The writing was discovered more than a year ago on a pottery shard dug up during excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, near Israel's Elah valley. The excavations were carried out by archaeologist Yosef Garfinkel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At first, scientists could not tell if the writing was Hebrew or some other local language.
Movie and TV filming on the streets of Los Angeles plummeted last year but a new state tax credit program helped stop some runaway production.
FilmL.A. Inc., the nonprofit group that handles city film permits, says on-location filming days declined 19 percent in 2009 from the previous year - the largest year-to-year decline since they were first tracked in 1993.
Feature film production alone dropped 30 percent.
Last year, California began a tax incentive program to keep filming in the state. Some 50 productions qualified for about $100 million. FilmL.A. says the program helped keep 10 feature films in town.

Google's employees in China may soon be facing unemployment following the Internet giant's ultimatum to Beijing, but the US firm let them know they are appreciated -- by taking them to see "Avatar".
The company bought more than 200 tickets for the blockbuster and allowed staff members to take the afternoon off on Thursday to see it, the Beijing Youth Daily reported Friday.
The Internet giant said this week it may abandon its operations in China, the world's largest online market with 360 million web users, over web censorship and cyber attacks on its systems that allegedly originated in China.
An enormous television screen showing a pornographic film caused a midnight traffic jam in central Moscow Thursday as stunned motorists slammed on the brakes to gawk at the writhing naked bodies.
The owner of the advertising screen, which sits atop a main road about two km (1.2 miles) south of the Kremlin, told the state-run RIA news agency that hackers had broken into the screen's computer system and turned on the porn.
"They were either acting out of hooliganism or were from a rival company," Viktor Laptev, commercial director of advertising firm Panno.ru, told RIA.
