Chase Burns and Jasmyne Keimig: That Infamous Movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tons of Cum (The Stranger)
Unstreamable is a weekly column that recommends films and TV shows you can't find on major streaming services in the United States. This week: loads are blown in Happiness; we revisit the first major U.S. film to deal with the AIDS epidemic, Longtime Companion; a drunk but brilliant jazz musician charms a Frenchman in 'Round Midnight; and Joan Collins is a boss ass bitch in The Bitch.
What is the name of the wire cage that fits over the cork of a bottle of champagne, sparkling wine or beer to prevent the cork from emerging under the pressure of the carbonated contents?
The Mona Lisa (Italian: Monna Lisa or La Gioconda, French: La Joconde) is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, and has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The Mona Lisa is also one of the most valuable paintings in the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the highest known insurance valuation in history at US$100 million in 1962 (equivalent to $852,139,072.85 as of 2019).
The painting is thought by many to be a portrait of the Italian noblewoman Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, and is in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel. It had been believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506; however, Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. Recent academic work suggests that it would not have been started before 1513. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic itself, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.

• Conductor Arturo Toscanini could be very forceful in his language and behavior toward his singers. At La Scala, a group of singers once complained to General Manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza that Mr. Toscanini was being abusive to them. Mr. Gatti-Casazza replied, "What can I do! He abuses me, too!" By the way, Maestro Toscanini once said, "I kissed my first woman and smoked my first cigarette on the same day. I have never had time for tobacco since."
• Organist Nadia Boulanger once forced Walter Damrosch to conduct an organ concerto by Aaron Copland by refusing to play anything else. However, Mr. Damrosch got his revenge - after the concerto was finished, he turned to the audience and said, "If a young man at the age of 23 can write like that, in five years he will be ready to commit murder."
• When Antonin Dvorak created his New World Symphony, he marked the slow movement andante. However, Anton Seidl conducted the movement largo at a rehearsal. Hearing that, and liking it, Dvorak changed the tempo to largo. Music critic Henry T. Finck writes, "A greater compliment has never been paid to any interpreter."
• Conductor Otto Klemperer disliked being bored. At the end of a boring lecture on composer Paul Hindemith, the lecturer asked if anyone had any questions. Maestro Klemperer stood up, and when everyone looked at him, he asked, "Where is the lavatory?"
Creativity
• Artists see and hear possibilities that other people don't see. David Hockney enjoyed driving his car in the Santa Monica Mountains. He also enjoyed listening to music such as Wagner's Parsifal while driving. While driving, he noticed that occasionally the music suited the landscape exactly, and therefore he choreographed two drives in which the high points of the music corresponded with the high points of the landscape. He even took some children with him on one of these choreographed drives. They sat quietly during the drive, then told him, "It's like a movie," which Mr. Hockney interprets as "meaning what they saw and what they heard combined into something."
• Window dresser Simon Doonan recommends the use of perishable food in windows despite the presence of mice in upscale fashion shops. For one thing, it makes a window display that people will notice and talk about - forever. For example, "Did I ever tell you about the day I saw a mouse chomping on a piece of cake next to a Prada handbag in a Barneys window?"
Critics
• The Guerilla Girls engage in activism for artists who are women or people of color, frequently by creating posters. The Guerilla Girls wear gorilla masks and are anonymous, taking on the names of deceased famous women creators. As you may expect, they get support from other women. Once, they received this letter from a woman who was a secretary at a museum in New York: "I work for a curator you named on one of your posters. You're right. He's an [*]sshole. Here's $25." In addition, the Guerilla Girls' posters frequently include information about how many women artists are or have been in shows at museums or art galleries, something that requires research. Guerilla Girl "Rosalba Carriera" says that when the Guerilla Girls asked for the bigwigs when telephoning to do research, they often lost time as their questions were evaded. Fortunately, they came up with a way to solve this problem: "Then we learned not to ask for the boss, but just to tell the secretaries and receptionists who we were and what we needed. Like magic, they always gave us the statistics right away." By the way, Guerilla Girl "Frida Kahlo" and other members of the group are working on a way to stop war. "Frida Kahlo" explains, "We want to create the Estrogen Bomb. When it is dropped in an area of violent conflict, men will throw down their guns, hug each other, apologize, say it was 'all their fault' and then start to clean up the mess."
Saw someone suggest responding to every Predator tweet with a link to the article below. I think that's a MARVELOUS idea!
Howler monkeys are the loudest land animals on Earth, capable of bellowing at volumes of 140 decibels, which is on the level of gunshots or firecrackers. Not surprisingly, male howlers frequently use this power to advertise their sexual fitness, catcalling females with their ear-splitting roars.
But in a beautiful twist of expectations, scientists have now found that the louder the monkey's calls, the smaller the monkey's balls

The Golden Globes are a week away and the Oscar nominations have yet to be announced, but we already know who former President Barack Obama's rooting for.
A day after posting his most-loved books of 2019, the former POTUS shared his personal picks for the year's best films - and as it happens, he had a hand in the making of one of them. The acclaimed documentary American Factory, the first entry listed on his alphabetized list, was the first film distributed by Higher Ground Productions, his production company with wife Michelle Obama, as part of the couple's deal with Netflix.
It wasn't the only documentary on the varied list, which also highlighted the Aretha Franklin concert film Amazing Grace and Apollo 11.
Obama's picks covered many genres, with the Olivia Wilde-directed comedy Booksmart ranking alongside dramas like The Irishman and Just Mercy as well as foreign language films like Parasite, Ash is Purest White, Altantics, Transit and Birds of Passage. And it's a good day for Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig; the directors and real-life couple each made the list with his Marriage Story and her Little Women.
Obama also shouted out three favorites from the small screen that he "considered as powerful as movies": Unbelievable, Watchmen and Fleabag. (The first season of that latter pick, incidentally, saw creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge taking, ahem, sensual inspiration from an Obama speech.)
Tom Hanks is already known as America's Dad. Now, he could be Greece's, too.
Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos signed an honorary naturalization order Friday, offering Hanks, his wife Rita Wilson and their children Greek citizenship, the president's office told CNN Saturday.
The minister added that Hanks "promotes Greece through his frequent visits during summer in Antiparos where he owns property."
Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, also produced a number of films based on Greece and the Greek community, including "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Mamma Mia!" and both of their sequels.
Wilson is Greek through her mother and was raised Greek Orthodox.
An ancient world of swords, warriors and folklore roars to life on the darkened street, offering a momentary escape from the modern-day bustle of Bangkok's unstoppable development.
On stage the Sai Bo Hong Chinese opera troupe act out dramatic tales centred around themes of loyalty, honesty and family to the sound of clashing cymbals and flutes.
For centuries, troupes like this have performed throughout Thailand, where 14 percent of the population are ethnic Chinese.
But the number of shows has dwindled in the era of smartphones, cinemas and Netflix, a vanishing art in a city of high-rises and mega-malls.
When the Thai troupe plays upcountry mostly elderly ethnic Chinese come to see them while in Bangkok it's a mix of tourists and local residents.
Angelina Sadovnikova, then aged 11, came across a mummified Pleistocene rodent in a cavity left by woolly mammoth tusk diggers . The girl, now 14, was with her mother when she made the frozen find on the shore of the Tirekhtyakh River close to the Arctic Circle in the Yakutia region of Siberia, say scientists.
She took the preserved lemming to local historian and archaeologist Prokopyi Nogovitsyn, who in turn alerted biologist professors Nikita Solomonov and Vyacheslav Rozhnov.
With an age of a little more than 41,000 years, it is the oldest lemming in the world, shows radiocarbon analysis
At a length of 166mm - and slightly larger than modern day Siberian brown lemmings - the ancient herbivore is remarkably well preserved.
X-rays showed that all the bones, including the skull, were well preserved although the internal organs did not survive.
Corporate social responsibility is the second-biggest con of 2019 (Donald Trump remains in first place).
Consider Boeing, whose board just fired its CEO, Dennis Muilenburg, in order "to restore confidence in the company moving forward as it works to repair relationships with regulators, customers, and all other stakeholders".
Restore confidence? Muilenburg's successor will be David Calhoun, who, as a longstanding member of Boeing's board of directors, allowed Muilenburg to remain CEO for more than a year after the first 737 Max crash and after internal studies found that the jetliner posed an unacceptable risk of accident. It caused the deaths of 346 people.
Muilenburg raked in $30m in 2018. He could walk away from Boeing with another $60m.
Until his ouster, Muilenburg was a director of the Business Roundtable, an association of 192 CEOs of America's largest corporations. With great fanfare last August, it announced a "fundamental commitment to all of our stakeholders" (emphasis in the original) and not just their shareholders.
Thousands of koalas are feared to have died in a wildfire-ravaged area north of Sydney, further diminishing Australia's iconic marsupial, while the fire danger increased in the country's east on Saturday as temperatures soared.
The mid-northern coast of New South Wales was home to up to 28,000 koalas, but wildfires have significantly reduced their population in recent months. Koalas are native to Australia and are one of the country's most beloved animals, but they've been under threat due to a loss of habitat.
"Up to 30% of their habitat has been destroyed," Australia's environment minister, Sussan Ley, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "We'll know more when the fires are calmed down and a proper assessment can be made."
Images shared of koalas drinking water after being rescued from the wildfires have gone viral on social media in recent days. "I get mail from all around the world from people absolutely moved and amazed by our wildlife volunteer response and also by the habits of these curious creatures," Ley said.
About 5 million hectares (12.35 million acres) of land have burned nationwide during the wildfire crisis, with nine people killed and more than 1,000 homes destroyed.
It took only minutes for the icy Elkhorn River to surge over a levee and engulf tiny Winslow, but months after the floodwaters receded, the village finds itself struggling to decide its future - or if it has a future.
Will it be reborn atop a nearby hill, or will the town stay put, living under a dark cloud?
This town of about 100 residents is one of a growing number that may face the choice of moving or dying as climate change worsens flood risks, leaving people who have lived for years through nature's extremes to accept that their hometowns may no longer be habitable where they are.
Since the creation of a buyout program in 1989, federal and local governments have poured more than $5 billion into buying tens of thousands of properties threatened by persistent flooding to avoid the need for frequent rebuilding.
Many residents have agreed to move to other places, but still rare is the relocation of entire towns.
As freezing water thrashed their rowboat in some of the most treacherous waters in the world, six men fought for 13 days to make history, becoming the first people to traverse the infamous Drake Passage with nothing other than sheer manpower.
They dodged icebergs, held their breaths as giant whales breached near their small boat and rode building-sized waves while rowing 24 hours a day toward Antarctica.
The team of men from four countries finished crossing the Drake Passage on Wednesday in just under two weeks after pushing off from the southern tip of South America.
"This is a really big deal in Antarctic history to hear about this," said Wayne Ranney, a Flagstaff, Arizona-based geologist who has led expeditions to Antarctica and crossed the Drake Passage in motorized vessels more than 50 times. "One hundred percent of their progress was done with those 12 arms for 600 (nautical) miles. That's just phenomenal. I can't even imagine."
Besides the threat to their lives, the men labored under grueling conditions. Their 29-foot (9-meter) rowboat, named the Ohana, had to be in constant motion to avoid capsizing. That meant three men would row for 90 minutes while the other three rested, still cold and wet.
"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" brought in $72 million over the weekend to remain the top-earning film in North America by light-years, according to studio estimates Sunday.
In 10 days of release it has brought in $362.8 million for Disney, falling just short of the earnings of its predecessor, 2017's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" in a comparable span.
Sony's "Jumanji: The Next Level," earned $35.3 million for second place and has tallied a total of $175.5 million through its third weekend of release.
Director Greta Gerwig's re-imagining of the American literary classic "Little Women" had a $16.5-million weekend and a five-day total of $29 million since its Christmas opening, a major performance for a smaller-audience film with a budget dwarfed by the top two films.
"Uncut Gems," an even smaller film that has also sparked awards-season buzz for Adam Sandler's rare dramatic performance as a jeweler and gambling addict, entered the top 10 for the first time as it expanded to more screens in its first week. The film earned $9.6 million over the weekend and has brought in $20 million overall.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
1. "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," $72 million, ($94.3 million international).
2. "Jumanji: The Next Level," $35.3 million ($61.6 million international).
3. "Little Women," $16.5 million, ($6.3 million international).
4. "Frozen 2," $16.5 million, ($42.2 million international).

6. "Knives Out," $9.7 million ($6 million international).
7. "Uncut Gems," $9.6 million.
