Jonathan Jones: "Have a Banksy Christmas: his Birmingham reindeer are an artistic miracle" (The Guardian)
Once again Banksy reaches the parts other artists miss. This is a good painting - the reindeer are nicely three-dimensional and solid enough to make the trompe l'oeil segue from street bench to wonderland work. But the cleverest thing about this bighearted artwork is that it does not depict "the homeless". By attaching his reindeer to an empty bench, it lets homeless people represent themselves.

More so than ever before, the presence and gravity of the climate crisis is being felt and understood. More so than ever before we are aware of the growing gulf between those of us who have more than enough and those who have far too little - the Equality Trust's new research showing that the six richest people in the UK are worth as much as the poorest 13 million is the most recent stat to boggle the mind.
Marina Hyde: This was a stunning victory for the bullshit-industrial complex (The Guardian)
Johnson announced his intention to bring the country back together, presumably by walling us in and forcing us to till his sunlit uplands. Speaking of which, Ashfield was won by a Tory named Lee Anderson, who put out a video during the campaign stating that "nuisance" council tenants should be made to live in tents in the middle of a field, where they would be woken at 6am and forced to pick vegetables until the end of the day, when they'd get a cold shower, then "back in the tent". Labour came third - THIRD - here.
In the UK and France it's named "Aubergine", while in South Asia and South Africa it's called "Brinjal". By what name is this member of the nightshade family known in the US?
The most populous country in Africa is also the seventh most populous country in the world. What is the name of this self-defined democratic secular state?
Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa, bordering Niger in the north, Chad in the northeast, Cameroon in the east, and Benin in the west. Its coast in the south is located on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. The federation comprises 36 states and 1 Federal Capital Territory, where the capital, Abuja, is located. The constitution defines Nigeria as a democratic secular state.
Nigeria is often referred to as the "Giant of Africa", owing to its large population and economy. With 186 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. Nigeria has the third-largest youth population in the world, after India and China, with more than 90 million of its population under age 18.
Nigeria is the world's 20th largest economy as of 2015, worth more than $500 billion and $1 trillion in terms of nominal GDP and purchasing power parity, respectively. It overtook South Africa to become Africa's largest economy in 2014. The 2013 debt-to-GDP ratio was 11 percent.

Nigeria. A former British colony, Nigeria's official language is English. Nigeria was established as an independent country in 1960 and has had some turbulent times, although it is fairly politically stable now. Nigeria is a member of the former British Commonwealth, now called Commonwealth of Nations. For that reason, Nigeria's (nominal) head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, although Nigeria is not under British sovereignty.

A quick search shows that Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa. I would've guessed South Africa, but what do I know?

• Comedian Brad Stein liked to sneak a couple of ketchup packets on board airplanes. After the plane had taken off, he would secretly squirt the ketchup below each ear, then point to his ears and ask the flight attendant, "Is this supposed to happen?"
• When comedian Jay Leno, host of The Tonight Show, was in high school, he used to sneak into the girls' bathroom, pour water into the Kotex dispenser, then watch it expand and tear itself from the wall.
Prejudice
• British comedian Omid Djalili's family came from Iran, but he is not a Muslim (he is a Baha'i); however, because of his genetics, he looks foreign to some of his fellow Brits, and that can lead to misunderstandings. For example, at Heathrow Airport, he looked anxiously at two men who seemed suspicious to him: they were muttering and bearded. He then looked at his fellow Brits, and he saw that they were anxiously looking at him. He says, "I shouted at people and said, 'What are you looking at me for? Can't you see those blokes over there?' I had a real go at them, which made things worse. People just got upset and averted their eyes and I ended up muttering to myself." This story is important because, as British journalist Ginny Dougary writes, "One slight problem with this is that his bearded brethren were doubtless just as innocent as Djalili. But it's still a relief to hear a comedian having the guts to examine prejudice from his own perspective, only to demonstrate how he is also the victim of the same nervy thought poison."
• Early in his career, Jewish comedian Milton Berle - then little more than an adolescent - worked on the same bill as Frank Fay, a comedian who was known for a lack of sensitivity. Because Frank Fay was annoyed that Milton was standing in the wings, he told the stage manager, "Get the little kike out of the entrance." Shocked, Milton complained to his mother, who told him that probably Frank Fay had said "tyke," not "kike." Milton then listened carefully to what Frank Fay said the next time the two were close together, and when Frank Fay told the stage manager, "I told you to keep that little Jew bastard out of the wings," Milton personally and immediately made sure that Frank Fay felt a strong urge to visit a hospital.
• Many years ago, the Seacrest Hotel of North Falmouth, Massachusetts, was restricted - meaning that it did not welcome Jews. When new managers took over the hotel, they decided to concoct a fictitious name for the new owner to show Jews that the hotel was no longer restricted. The name they decided on was Milton Q. Shapiro. Although "Milton Q. Shapiro" was completely fictitious and never existed, some would-be guests tried to bluff their way onto the premises when the hotel was filled to capacity by saying, "I'll have you know, I am a very close friend of Milton Q. Shapiro. He was a classmate of mine in college and a fraternity brother besides."
• In Chappell's Show, comedian Dave Chappell attacked racism by playing such characters as a white supremacist who happened to be blind as well as black. Unfortunately, although most people recognized that racism was the real target of the subversive humor, some racists took it literally and congratulated Mr. Chappell for holding the same views that they did. Mr. Chappell was so shocked that he stopped making his TV show and stopped making the millions of dollars that went with making his TV show.
• Kathy Nijimy and Maureen Gaffney are actor-comedians who created "The Kathy and Mo Show: Parallel Lives." They performed it at a lot of women's music festivals, where they discovered that gay people are just as likely as straight people to make assumptions about other people. At the women's music festivals, everyone assumed that Kathy and Mo were gay. In straight society, straights tend to assume that everyone is straight.

The owner of TV's Hallmark Channel on Sunday reversed a decision to ban a commercial depicting a same-sex wedding, suggesting that it was not in keeping with the company's well-known slogan, "When you care enough to send the very best."
Earlier this week, Hallmark Channel decided to reject an ad from online-weddings firm Zola which showed two women getting married pondering how their wedding might have improved with the use of Zola's services. The company cited a desire to avoid controversy, and a conservative advocacy organization, One Million Moms, had already started a petition urging the cable outlet to remove the ad from its schedule.
"The Hallmark Channel will be reaching out to Zola to reestablish our partnership and reinstate the commercials," said Mike Perry, president and CEO of Hallmark Cards, which controls Crown Media Networks, the parent company of Hallmark Channel, in a prepared statement. "Across our brand, we will continue to look for ways to be more inclusive and celebrate our differences." He acknowledged the ban had caused "hurt and disappointment."
The imbroglio threatened to overwhelm one of the Hallmark Channel's biggest programming moments - a broad array of holiday-themed movies that attract broad audiences and the advertisers who wish to cultivate their disposable income. On Saturday night, Walt Disney's Freeform cable network posted a message on Twitter saying that it would be happy to run Zola's commercials. TV host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres questioned the decision on social media and the news was lampooned by NBC's "Saturday Night Live" last night with a sketch in which a Hallmark Channel game-show host urged viewers to "stay straight out there."
Two programmers in Las Vegas recently admitted to running two of the largest illegal television and movie streaming services in the country, according to federal officials.
One of the platforms reportedly had more paying subscribers than Netflix, Hulu and other popular licensed streaming platforms.
An FBI investigation led officials to Darryl Polo, 36, and Luis Villarino, 40, who have pleaded guilty to copyright infringement charges for operating iStreamItAll, a subscription-based streaming site, and Jetflix, a large illegal TV streaming service, federal officials said Friday.
With roughly 118,000 TV episodes and 11,000 movies, iStreamItAll provided members with more content than Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and Vudu, according to prosecutors.
A new Fox News poll on voter support for impeachment contradicted President Trump (R-Fake Hair), who recently boasted major support in favor of "No Impeachment."
Amid last week's historic House Judiciary Committee vote to advance two articles of impeachment, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, the president tweeted, "Poll numbers have gone through the roof in favor of No Impeachment, especially with swing States and Independents in swing States. People have figured out that the Democrats have no case, it is a total Hoax."
But a fresh Fox News poll conducted last week and released on Sunday found that a majority of the American electorate wants Trump impeached. Fifty percent are in favor of impeaching and removing the president, while four percent say he should be impeached but not removed, and 41 percent oppose impeachment altogether.
Trump slammed the poll Sunday afternoon on Twitter: "The @foxnewPolls, always inaccurate, are heavily weighted toward Dems. So ridiculous - same thing happened in 2016. They got it all wrong. Get a new pollster!" he wrote.
"Both Commiecast MSNBC & Fake News CNN are watching their Ratings TANK," he said on Twitter. "Don't know why @FoxNews wants to be more like them? They'll all die together as other outlets take their place. Only pro Trump Fox shows do well. Rest are nothing."
Clint Eastwood might end up with a lump of box office coal after "Richard Jewell" sputtered in its domestic debut. Despite critical acclaim, the drama about the security guard falsely accused by the media for playing a part in the 1996 Olympics bombing ignited with a dismal $5 million from 2,502 theaters.
It's a disappointing result for Eastwood, marking one of the worst nationwide openings of the 89-year-old's directorial career. His only movie to endure a worse fate was 1980's "Billy Bronco" with $3.7 million. Should "Richard Jewell" come in ahead of expectations by even $200,000, that would propel it just barely above 1997's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" ($5.2 million) and 1999's "True Crime" ($5.2 million) in terms of Eastwood's inaugural outings.
Eastwood's films don't traditionally have huge opening weekends - his strongest being 2014's "American Sniper" ($89 million) followed by 2016's "Sully" ($35 million) - but tend to benefit from strong multiples. Likewise, December releases usually see smaller starts and can enjoy long legs during the holiday season. Heading into the weekend, "Richard Jewell" was expected to earn $10 million. Given the crowded market, sources estimate that "Richard Jewell" could tap out in North America with $25 million to $30 million and might result in tens of millions in theatrical losses. The movie cost $45 million to produce.
Military officials said they are looking into what appeared to be white supremacist hand signs made by students before the Army-Navy football game on Saturday.
Pregame festivities aired by ESPN showed cadets on both sides of the rivalry - two West Point cadets and one Naval Academy midshipman - making gestures as a camera focused on a sideline report from journalist Rece Davis.
At least one of the gestures resembled a white supremacist symbol described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as "the thumb and forefinger joined together in a circle, the remaining three fingers splayed out behind."
The Navy won the 120th annual game 31-7. It was kicked off with the help of President Donald Trump (R-Racist), who took the field during the coin toss and visited both teams' locker rooms beforehand to shake hands with the players.
The remains of three people were found at the Alamo during an archaeological exploration done in preparation for renovations, Texas state officials said in a statement.
The three bodies, believed to belong to a young adult, infant, and adult, were discovered in the Monks Burial Room and the Nave of Alamo Church, in San Antonio, the Texas General Land Office said in a statement. Upon discovery, the on-site tribal monitor was notified and the excavation of the site where the bodies were found was halted.
The remains were found during a restoration plan meant to help the 300-year-old structures at the historic Spanish mission built in the 18th century remain standing. Officials were hoping to establish moisture monitoring equipment in the building.
Remains had previously been discovered at the Alamo in 1989 and 1995. Nearly 200 people died in the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, including famed American frontiersmen David Crockett and Jim Bowie, although historians believe the human remains from the battle were burned.
Australia's Wolfe Creek Crater is much younger than previously thought, and has allowed scientists to calculate how often meteorites hit Earth with the force of massive nuclear explosions.
Professor Tim Barrows from the University of Wollongong led an international team that used two techniques to date rocks affected by the impact.
They found it was most likely that an iron meteorite 15-metres wide hit the site 120,000 years ago - less than half the previous estimate of 300,000 years ago.
With the oldest reliably-dated archaeological evidence for the arrival of people in Australia coming in at 65,000 years ago, it is unlikely anyone was killed when the Wolfe Creek Crater was formed.
But considering that Western society was still debating how meteorite craters were formed in the early 20th century, it is fascinating that a local Indigenous story for the creation of Wolfe Creek Crater describes a falling star.
The skies of northern Canada are home to plenty of mysterious phenomena (just ask our good buddy "Steve"), including no shortage of alleged UFO sightings. Now, truth seekers at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg may have a busy winter ahead of them, thanks to a recent donation of more than 30,000 UFO-related documents to the school's archives.
The donation comes courtesy of Chris Rutkowski, a science writer and prolific Canadian ufologist. Rutkowski's collection includes more than 20,000 UFO reports filed over the past 30 years, plus more than 10,000 UFO-related documents from the Canadian government, according to a statement from the University of Manitoba. Many of these documents concern an infamous UFO encounter known as the Falcon Lake incident - an encounter that Rutkowski calls Canada's "best-documented UFO case."
"It even beats Roswell [the alleged flying saucer spotted over New Mexico in 1947] because the United States still doesn't recognize that anything happened in Roswell," Rutkowski told the CBC. The Falcon Lake incident, meanwhile, struck both U.S. and Canadian officials as unusual - and unexplainable.
All of Rutkowski's records on the Falcon Lake incident - plus thousands of other reported UFO encounters - will soon be available at the University of Manitoba's Archives & Special Collections. Got a few bucks to spare for the unknown? The school has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help digitize these documents.
"Jumanji: The Next Level" puts "Frozen 2" on second-place ice, while Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell" opened with one of the worst box office debuts for the director.
The Sony film starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart brought in $60.1 million in the U.S. and Canada to break a three-day record for a comedy in December for the production company. The sequel is a followup to 2017's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," which grossed $962 million worldwide.
"Frozen 2" dropped to second place with $19.2 million domestically after claiming top box office spot for three straight weeks, earning $367 million since its Nov. 22 release. The animated film following the adventures of Anna and Elsa crossed the $1 billion mark globally to become Disney Animation's third billion-dollar project along with "Frozen" and "Zootopia." It also became Walt Disney Studio's sixth billion-dollar release in 2019.
The Rian Johnson-directed "Knives Out" continues to lean on strong social media buzz to land at No. 3, bringing in $9.2 million. The well-reviewed, innovative whodunit film starring Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chris Evans has earned back its budget last week, and now has grossed $78 million.
"Uncut Gems," starring Adam Sandler, will also expand nationwide next week, but opened in a select five theaters Friday to earn more than $525,000. The thriller focuses on a charismatic New York jeweler, played by Sandler, who is looking for the next big score in a series of high-stake bets.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
1. "Jumanji: The Next Level," $60.1 million ($85.7 million international).
2. "Frozen 2," $19.1 million ($55.7 million international).
3. "Knives Out," $9.2 million ($13.6 million international).
4. "Richard Jewell," $5 million.
5. "Black Christmas," $4.42 million ($3.1 million international).
6. "Ford v Ferrari," $4.1 million ($5.1 million international).
7. "Queen & Slim," $3.6 million.
8. "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," $3.3 million.
9. "Dark Waters," $2 million.
10. "21 Bridges," $1.1 million ($1.4 million international).
