Marc Dion: Barney, We Knew Ye, and Knew Ye, and Knew Ye (Creators Syndicate)
I watched Frank get cheated by bank and mortgage sharpies, too. Put a politician, either liberal or conservative, in a room with six bankers, and the pol comes out without his wallet and, more importantly, without your wallet. Bankers do not bank, investors do not invest and speculators do not speculate for the benefit of the masses, and a politician who thinks they do will find his constituents sleeping under cardboard.
Tim Jonze: Don't buy my music (Guardian)
Why is Elvis Costello telling fans not to buy a new box set of his music? Tim Jonze reports on the fine art of career sabotage.
Amity Shlaes: Taylor Swift as Counterculture Icon for Teen Girls (Bloomberg)
Swift comes out of the country-music culture, where nice girls sing about boys they can't have all the time, but now she had busted into the world of pop rock, taking on someone else for being too cool. Of the girl who has stolen her guy, Swift sang: "She wears short skirts, I wear sneakers, she's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers."
Randall Roberts: Your Granny's awards (Los Angeles Times)
It's hard not to wonder, especially after watching the less-than-spectacular Grammy nominations on Wednesday night, what is the point of these music awards? It's too cynical to imagine it's only to fill three hours of network television, prompting a quick rush to iTunes to download that one song by Mumford&Sons or Nicki Minaj.

Well, judging from today's replies re: Nicolas Cage, guess I'm the only one with a dim view of him. I think he's a man's man... :)
Okay, that being said, Gene Wilder was born Jerome Silberman; June 11, 1933.
I do love Gene (Gemini, like moi) and will never forget how he stood by my beloved, Gilda Radner, as she went through her stages of the cancer that eventually took her life.
This is unlike a certain political candidate (Newt) who served his first wife with divorce papers as she lay in her hospital bed, after her surgery for cancer. Can't get much lower than that...
PS: I shall be caring to my precious gks for the next week, so my appearance here may be spotty. It's been a long time since I made school lunches, guys... ;)

And, Joe S took the day off.
Sorry for so many 'who was born' questions. Been a bit pressed for time (among other things), and they aren't real complicated.
Should be past this bump in the road in a day or so. (I hope.)
'The GOP debates make me cringe. I fully expect that Mitt Romney will make some stupid remark about "American Exceptionalism", that Rick Perry or Michelle Bachman will espouse their Christo-Fascist worldview, that Herman Cain will display his total ignorance about everything, and that Newt will make a total ass of himself with his bombast. I just wish the rest of the world wasn't watching as well, for the GOP performance this election cycle diminishes our nation in the eyes of the world.'
I didn't watch this one, so I don't know what Santorum did. And I am sure Ron Paul was, well, Ron Paul. Will miss Cain . . . at least he was humorous, if nothing else.

The disabled grizzly bears Huck, Jake, Pete and Mike arrived after a drive-thru animal park closed in 1985.
Drifter the tiger came as a cub after being seized in a 1997 Chicago drug raid. Booie, the smoking chimp, was brought here in 1995 at age 28 when he was no longer needed for testing vaccines at the New York University School of Medicine.
Through the years, 76,000 animals have come and gone - all welcomed by Martine Colette, founder and director of the Wildlife WayStation, one of the first animal sanctuaries in the country and, at one time, the largest.
Some of Hollywood's biggest stars have rallied around the WayStation in the past decade. Still, the fate of its remaining 420 animals is endangered by a drop in donations, rising upkeep and food costs, and the inability to pay staff.
She's had to lay off about a third of her staff, which has ranged from 42 to 50 people, and she wonders how she'll cover the $142,000 it costs a month to feed and care for the animals.

For Zuzu of 'It's a Wonderful Life,' it wasn't such a wonderful life
"I never saw the movie before," said Karolyn Grimes, 71, remembering living near Kansas City, Mo., in December 1979 and catching out of the corner of her eye flickering images on the television of familiar faces and places from long ago.
Working full time and raising seven children, the 39-year-old Grimes had no time to spare, much less to sit around watching television. But something tugged at her as she saw snatches of snow-clogged streets of small-town America and people she thought she knew.
"Then it hit me," said Grimes. "I was in that movie. I was Zuzu."
"I never saw movies I was in because my mom told me that would be prideful, being stuck on yourself," said Grimes.
University professor Jeff Ferrell is something of a U.S. urban Robin Hood, although what he gives away is not stolen but the result of dumpster diving.
The Texas Christian University (TCU) professor of sociology sifts through dumpsters and gives the vast majority of what he finds to the needy or to friends.
He has also managed to furnish his living room with what is left, filled a tool shed with a collection of everything from screws to power tools and never pays for a bar of soap or office supplies.
Ferrell, 57, has been known to give scrounged food to friends, in the form of prepackaged, never-opened cocktail nuts. And because he gathers the goods on a bicycle, most of his finds are from dumpsters near his home.
The energetic, lanky professor with spiky hair is passionate about the ill effects of consumerism on society.

For Harley-Davidson, Mike Adams is a godsend. When the 22-year-old college senior showed up for a $25 rider training class at a community college last year in Michigan, his aspiration was to someday buy his ultimate American icon: a Harley.
But he quickly found he was in enemy territory.
"Everyone my age was talking about buying a 'crotch rocket'" Adams said. "They wanted a Ducati or Yamaha or some other kind of import; but I never heard any other talk about a Harley."
Undeterred, Adams soon abandoned his Honda motorcycle, and paid cash for a brand new $14,000 Harley-Davidson Dark Custom Street Bob, using money he'd earned at a variety of jobs, from operating a forklift to working an internship at a Kentucky newspaper.
For the past decade, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Harley-Davidson Inc had largely been stymied in its attempt to reach a younger audience.
The 13-year-old girl opened the door of her home in this small city on the edge of Phoenix to encounter a man who said that his car had broken down and he needed to use the phone. Once inside, the man pummeled the teen from behind, knocking her unconscious and sexually assaulting her.
Seven months before, in an apartment two miles away, another 13-year-old girl was fondled in the middle of the night by her mother's live-in boyfriend. She woke up in her room at least twice a week to find him standing over her, claiming to be looking for her mother's cell phone.
Both cases were among more than 400 sex-crimes reported to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office during a three-year period ending in 2007 - including dozens of alleged child molestations - that were inadequately investigated and in some instances were not worked at all, according to current and former police officers familiar with the cases.
In El Mirage alone, where Arpaio's office was providing contract police services, officials discovered at least 32 reported child molestations - with victims as young as 2 years old - where the sheriff's office failed to follow through, even though suspects were known in all but six cases.
The botched sex-crimes investigations have served as an embarrassment to a department whose sheriff is the self-described "America's Toughest Sheriff" and a national hero to conservatives on the immigration issue.

America's toughest immigration crackdown was meant to drive illegal workers from Alabama.
But after two employees with foreign automakers Mercedes-Benz and Honda were stopped by police in recent days, it is giving many pause for thought. The companies have poured billions of dollars of investment into the state.
Republican backers of the state crackdown say they have been talking to business leaders, and have been considering "tweaks" to some of the provisions of the law which came into force in September.
As Republican presidential candidates sparred over who can be tougher on immigration in recent weeks, Alabama experienced the downside of taking a hardline stance.
The recent incidents triggered dismay and ridicule in Alabama, where Mercedes-Benz opened a plant in 1993, and was followed by Honda, Hyundai and Toyota. The four have together made, or announced, investments totaling $8.2 billion in the state through 2014.

Megachurch leader Bishop Eddie Long announced Sunday he's taking time off to focus on his family after his wife filed for divorce.
Long's spokesman, Art Franklin, said the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader told his congregation during church services that he will continue to serve as senior pastor at the church in Lithonia just outside Atlanta. But Long said he needs a sabbatical.
Long's wife, Vanessa Long, filed a petition for divorce Thursday in DeKalb County Superior Court to end her 21-year marriage to the embattled minister. The church sent out a press release Friday morning saying Vanessa Long planned to withdraw her petition, but her attorney said later in the day that she had changed her mind.
The split comes more than a year after allegations last year that Eddie Long used his lavish lifestyle and position of spiritual authority to lure four young men into sexual relationships. Eddie Long settled the cases but has never admitted to any wrongdoing.
The Longs were married March 10, 1990. The couple has three children together and has another child from Long's previous marriage.

This is not good news for entomophobia sufferers. A former park ranger traveling in New Zealand has stumbled across the world's largest insect, a Weta Bug, with a wing span of seven inches and the weight of three mice.
"Three of us walked the trails of this small island for two nights scanning the vegetation for a giant weta," said Mark Moffett, 55. "We spent many hours with no luck finding any at all, before we saw her up in a tree. The giant Weta is the largest insect in the world, and this is the biggest one ever found."
The Weta Bug goes back 180 million years, predating the dinosaurs, but was thought to be extinct after European explorers had unwittingly brought rats with them to New Zealand's Little Barrier island.

The latest "Twilight" movie cast the longest shadow with $16.9 million for a third-straight No. 1 finish during one of the year's slowest weekends at the box office.
Business was dismal, with box-office tracker Hollywood.com estimating Sunday that domestic revenues totaled just $82 million. That puts it barely ahead of Hollywood's worst haul of the year, when revenues were $81.5 million over the second weekend in September.
Once studios release final numbers Monday, this past weekend could come in as the worst of the year if revenues finish even lower.
Women and families continue to dominate the scanty business at theaters now. Summit Entertainment's female-driven blockbuster "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" raised its domestic haul to $247.3 million.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," $16.9 million.
2. "The Muppets," $11.2 million ($1.8 million international).
3. "Hugo," $7.6 million.
4. "Arthur Christmas," $7.4 million.
5. "Happy Feet Two," $6 million.
6. "Jack and Jill," $5.5 million.
7. "The Descendants," $5.2 million.
8. "Immortals," $4.4 million.
9. "Tower Heist," $4.1 million ($4 million international).
10. "Puss in Boots," $3.1 million ($23 million international).
