33 Haunting Black And White Photos Of Japan's Ghost Island (Buzzfeed)
"You would think that Japan's overpopulation problems would force them to hang on to every bit of inhabitable land they own, but these images show otherwise. Hashima Island, nicknamed Ghost Island, was abandoned entirely after the mine which had been running for over 80 years was closed in 1974."--Neatorama
J. David Ake, "A Protester Handed President Barach Obama a Note …." (Paid to See)
Protesters try to speak truth to power. For example, a protestor slipped President Barack Obama this note, apparently about the Occupy Wall Street (et al.) protests, in New Hampshire November 2011: "Mr. President: Over 4000 peaceful protesters have been arrested. While banksters continue to destroy the economy with impunity. You must stop the assault on our 1st amendment rights. Your silence sends a message that police brutality is ac[ceptable]. Banks got bailed out. We got sold out." AP photographer Charlie Dharapak was on the scene and took a photograph of the note in President Obama's hand.
Paul Krugman: Money at the Top (New York Times)
Seriously, the notion that denying health care to the near-poor is a serious deficit-reduction policy, but raising taxes on the very rich is not, is not something you can justify at all on the basis of the actual numbers. Anyone who says different is practicing, well, class warfare.
Roger Ebert: Review of "The Muppets" (3 stars)
The Muppet franchise is revitalized with "The Muppets," a funny, wickedly self-aware musical that opens by acknowledging they've outlived their shelf life.

You know what a "Jarhead" is? Well, you probably do, but as those
clean-faced soldiers (usually young) with no discernable hair-style to
speak of sitting above a sea of uniformed shoulders.
You see, the hoo-ya crowd was (in an oh-so-slightly depracative way)
originally known as Gyre-heads, which is pretty-much the description
of them ... especially when congregated without cover. Eventually, to
the historically uninitiated, this orbital identification was
corrupted to "Jar-head," which is actually a bit non-sequitur.
This is really why you have occasionally wondered why Jar(Gyre)-heads
don't look a bit more "jar"-headed ~

Computer stuff: Finally got the repaired computer online yesterday and it works nicely, but...
Since it's Windows7, none of my old disks have worked in it (so far), compatibility wizard be damned, and I'm having trouble finding a plain-text editor that's compatible with Mr. Gates' newest flawed and overpriced excuse of an OS, while still being user-friendly.
So, that means I'm surfing on the repaired one, but I have to go to the old, Clinton-era 'puter to put the page together and upload it.
And that involves climbing on top of the piano and stretching precariously to move the cables from one computer to the other.
It's one of the few things that terrifies me, mostly because I'm a bit of a klutz (and have the scars to prove it).
But, progress is being made. Gotta few bugs to puzzle out (and lots of disks to replace), but, hey, it works. Sorta, kinda.

Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu on Sunday branded climate change a "huge, huge enemy" that threatened the common home of humanity, imperilling rich and poor alike.
At a rally on the eve of the 12-day UN climate talks in Durban, Tutu said that after the battle to crush apartheid, mankind must now unite in the goal of conquering carbon.
One of the great figures in the effort to end whites-only rule, the 80-year-old former archbishop thanked other countries that had backed the long campaign, especially those in Africa who had taken in refugees and the children of anti-apartheid fighters.
"Now we are facing another huge, huge enemy. And no one, no country can fight that enemy on his own... an enemy called global warming, climate change," he said.
"We have only one home. This is the only home we have. And whether you are rich or poor, this is your only home... you are members of one family, the human race."

Archaeologist William Kelso is certain he's discovered the remains of the oldest Protestant church in the United States, standing between two holes he insists once held wooden posts.
In 1614, Pocahontas was "married right here, I guarantee," Kelso told AFP at the Jamestown, Virginia archeological site southeast of the nation's capital.
Near the James River, on May 14, 1607, a group of about a hundred men landed on commission from England to form the first colony in the Americas.
The area was carefully excavated to reveal several large post holes 6.5 feet (two meters) deep and the trace remnants of four graves.
An original, autographed drawing by Walt Disney, believed to have been made about 1920 before he hit it big in the entertainment world, will go up for auction in Reno this week.
The whimsical drawing of a cigar-chomping man wearing a derby hat will be among 1,400 items up for sale at the two-day auction set to begin Tuesday at the Atlantis Casino Resort.
Titled "Fill Up My Can," the illustration has an estimated value of $35,000 to $50,000. It's believed to predate Disney's Mickey Mouse, which made its cartoon debut in 1928.
"Real pieces signed by him (Disney) are really rare," said Fred Holabird of Reno-based Holabird-Kagin Americana, which is staging the auction. "This is one of the earliest known signed Disney pieces, if not the earliest."

Dubbed the Afghan Elvis, Farhad Darya may be the only man in the most conservative country on earth who can reduce an audience of women in headscarves to a screaming, waving, whistling throng.
In a country where women enjoy few rights and music was banned under the Taliban until 10 years ago, Darya is an icon for millions and his popularity was clear at a rare, top-security, female-only show in Kabul.
Several hundred women, from students to middle-aged mothers, swayed as Darya performed but they did not dance due to the presence of television cameras. Women dancing in front of strange men is taboo in Afghanistan.
Darya, a UN goodwill ambassador described by the organisation as "one of the best role models" in Afghanistan, held the concert to spotlight a campaign against domestic violence, which is still widespread here.
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is forced to research and clarify her late grandfather's immigration status. Marco Rubio, Florida's GOP Senator, is accused of embellishing his family's immigrant story. A Republican congressional candidate in California puts on his website that he is the great-grandson of an illegal immigrant.
As more Latino Republicans seek and win elected office, their families' backgrounds are becoming subject to increased scrutiny from some Latino activists, a reaction experts say is a result of Latino Republicans' conservative views on immigration. It's a new phenomenon that experts say Latino Democrats rarely faced, and could be a recurring feature in elections as the Republican Party seeks to recruit more Latino candidates.
For years, most Latino elected officials were largely Democrats, except in Florida, where Cuban Americans tended to vote Republican. But recently, a new generation of Latino Republicans has won seats in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, California and even Idaho. Those politicians have come under fire from some Latino activists for pushing for laws targeting illegal immigrants and for opposing efforts for comprehensive immigration reform - views that are in line with most Republicans.
And the immigrant advocates are pointing to the GOP Latino elected leaders' own family histories in an effort to paint them as hypocrites. Ignacio Garcia, a history professor at Brigham Young University, said it comes from a long tradition by liberal activists of portraying Latino Republicans as "vendidos," or sellouts, since the majority of Latino voters tend to vote Democratic.

The world's biggest financier in the fight against three killer diseases says it has run out of money to pay for new grant programs for the next two years - a situation likely to hit poor AIDS patients around the world.
An official with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria said Thursday that its has been forced to cease giving new grants until 2014 because of global economic woes brought on by debt crises in the U.S. and Europe.
An independent panel recommended in September that the fund must adopt tougher financial safeguards after it weathered a storm of criticism and doubts among some of its biggest donors.
Germany, the European Commission and Denmark withheld hundreds of millions of euros in funding pending reviews of the fund's internal controls. Germany - the fund's fourth-largest donor- has since restored its funding.
The Geneva-based fund was set up in 2002 as a new way to coordinate world efforts against the diseases and to speed up emergency funds from wealthy nations and donors to the places hardest hit. Outside of its donor nations and celebrity backers, the biggest private donor is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that has pledged $1.15 billion and provided it with $650 million so far.
The governor of Kansas faced an online trashing Friday for tattling on a teenaged girl who sent out a critical tweet during a visit to the state capitol.
Emma Sullivan, 18, was hauled into her principal's office and ordered to write letters of apology after one of Governor Sam Brownback's (R-Small Penis) office contacted the tour organizer to complain about the offending note on the social networking site Twitter.
Sullivan had just 60 followers on Twitter when she wrote the offending note Monday. Two days later her story hit the local news ahead of the generally slow Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Brownback's office regularly monitors social media for references to the Republican governor to see what his constituents are saying about him, spokeswoman Sherriene Jones-Sontag told the Eagle.

A Kansas teenager who wrote a disparaging tweet about Gov. Sam Brownback (R-Caveman) said Sunday that she is rejecting her high school principal's demand for a written apology.
Emma Sullivan, 18, of the Kansas City suburb of Fairway, said she isn't sorry and doesn't think such a letter would be sincere.
Sullivan received a scolding at school and was ordered to send Brownback an apology letter. She said Prinicipal Karl R. Krawitz even suggested talking points for the letter she was supposed to turn in Monday.
Sullivan's mother, Julie, said she isn't angry with her daughter, even though she thinks she "could have chosen different words."
"She wasn't speaking to the 3,000 followers she has now," Julie Sullivan said. "She was talking to 65 friends. And also it's the speech they use today. It's more attention grabbing. I raised my kids to be independent, to be strong, to be free thinkers. If she wants to tweet her opinion about Gov. Brownback, I say for her to go for it and I stand totally behind her."
If Miley Cyrus is in fact a heavy marijuana user, the drug hasn't impaired her capacity for deductive reasoning.
A video obtained by The Daily shows the crooner at her birthday party at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, concluding that the Bob Marley cake her buds baked for her is definitely an indicator of something: "You know you're a stoner when friends make you a Bob Marley cake," she's says. "You know you smoke way too much f---ing weed."
It was almost a year ago that TMZ obtained a video of the singer smoking a bong. At the time, her publicity team defended the charge, saying that Cyrus was only smoking the psychoactive herb salvia.
In the new video, Cyrus' friend Kelly Osbourne is seen telling her, "I thought salvia was your problem."
Charles "Teenie" Harris had a photographic mission: going beyond the obvious or sensational to capture the essence of daily African-American life in the 20th century
For more than 40 years, Harris - as lead photographer of the influential Pittsburgh Courier newspaper - took almost 80,000 pictures of people from all walks: presidents, housewives, sports stars, babies, civil rights leaders and even cross-dressing drag queens.
Now, a new exhibit and online catalog is showing the depth of Harris' work, an archive showing a major artistic achievement that influenced people around the country.
Harris was a gifted basketball player as a young man, and helped start a Negro League baseball team, too. His brother was Pittsburgh's biggest bookie, and that gave him access to people throughout the city.
But he found his mission at the Pittsburgh Courier, which was distributed all over the country via a network of Pullman train porters. Through the paper Harris had endless opportunities to chronicle daily life and to meet the rich, famous, and powerful.
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" took in $42 million domestically over the three-day weekend and $62.3 million in the five-day Thanksgiving boom time from Wednesday to Sunday. That raised its domestic total to $221.3 million, while the Summit Entertainment release added $71.5 million overseas to lift the international total to $268 million and the worldwide take to $489.3 million.
Debuting at No. 2 was Disney's family flick "The Muppets," with $29.5 million for the three-day weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday haul.
Three other family films rounded out the top-five: the Warner Bros. sequel "Happy Feet Two" at No. 3 with a three-day total of $13.4 million and $18.4 million for five days; Sony's animated comedy "Arthur Christmas" at No. 4 with $12.7 million for three days and $17 million for five days; and Paramount's epic adventure "Hugo" at No. 5 with $11.4 million for three days and $15.4 million for five days.
Between "Breaking Dawn" and the blitz of family films, analysts thought Hollywood had a shot at record revenue over Thanksgiving, one of the year's busiest weekends at movie theaters. But viewers did not come in anywhere close to record numbers.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," $42 million ($71.5 million international).
2. "The Muppets," $29.5 million ($1.6 million international).
3. "Happy Feet Two," $13.4 million ($10 million international).
4. "Arthur Christmas," $12.7 million ($11.9 million international).
5. "Hugo," $11.4 million.
6. "Jack and Jill," $10.3 million.
7. "Immortals," $8.8 million ($8 million international).
8. "Puss in Boots," $7.5 million ($9 million international).
9. "Tower Heist," $7.3 million ($7.3 million international).
10. "The Descendants," $7.2 million.
