Lucy Mangan: Country Music by Ken Burns review - an epic education in American folk (The Guardian)
By the end of the UK version, though you may feel thoroughly informed about the big picture, you may also wonder how much depth was sacrificed. You may hanker for greater analysis of the music, more talk of songwriting from the likes of Nelson and Haggard, or a more detailed consideration of all the overlooked women - such as Elsie McWilliams, who wrote or co-wrote 39 songs with Rodgers - behind the men. But maybe half the point of a wide-ranging documentary is to yield to other, more specific offspring in time. I look forward to eight hours of Townes in due course.
This American author, among the most popular authors in recent US history, was born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien in New Orleans. By what name is this writer-of-books better known?
Rich Uncle Pennybags is the mascot of the game Monopoly. He is depicted as a portly old man with a moustache who wears a morning suit with a bowtie and top hat. In large parts of the world he is known, additionally or exclusively, as the Monopoly Man, or Mr. Monopoly. He also appears in the related games Advance to Boardwalk, Free Parking, Don't Go to Jail, Monopoly City, Monopoly Junior, and Monopoly Deal.
The character first appeared on Chance and Community Chest cards in U.S. editions of Monopoly in 1936. The identity of the designer of the character, artist Dan Fox, was unknown until 2013, when a former Parker Brothers executive, Philip Orbanes, was contacted by one of Fox's grandchildren.
Contrary to popular belief, Rich Uncle Pennybags does not have a monocle and the confusion may come from another advertising icon, Mr. Peanut, who, in fact, does wear a monocle. News media and popular culture have referenced Rich Uncle Pennybags wearing a monocle.

• Early in their careers, British comedians Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders shared a house. Ms. Saunders was known for being disorganized and messy, although she later became much neater after having children. Unfortunately, their house was broken into. They called the police, who investigated and said, "Well, it is quite bad, but the worst is that room at the top." Actually, the burglars hadn't entered the room at the top. That room was Ms. Saunders' room, and it was in its usual messy state. Ms. French says about Ms. Saunders, "She used to be up to her knees in old pants."
• Groucho Marx once knew a comedian named Doc Rockwell who took an odd approach to saving money. He used to buy several new suits at one time to get a discount, then he would wear a suit for a month, throw it away, and wear one of his other suits for a month, repeating the process until he ran out of suits. He would then buy several new suits at a discount and start the process again. He once explained to Groucho, "This way, I don't have to pay for any cleaning and pressing and, besides, I'm always wearing a brand-new suit."
• Caroline Otéro and Liane de Pougy were members of the 19th-century French glitterati. Their rivalry was on display at a great ball they were both invited to attend in Paris. Ms. Otéro arrived wearing a beautiful black dress and every piece of jewelry she owned. Arriving a few minutes later was Ms. de Pougy, who wore the same style of dress - but in white - and no jewelry. Trailing Ms. de Pougy was her maid - who was wearing every piece of jewelry that Ms. de Pougy owned.
• The first time country music star Bill Anderson saw country comedian Jerry Clower, he got mad at him because Mr. Clower was wearing exactly the same kind of coat that he was wearing. Mr. Anderson thought, "How dare him to have a coat exactly like mine!" Fortunately, Mr. Clower's reaction kept Mr. Anderson from staying mad at him. Mr. Clower said, "You mean I got the good taste to buy a coat exactly like the [coat of the] great Bill Anderson?"
• In 1924, the Prince of Wales visited Fanny Brice's apartment in New York. She told him, "Sit down, kid, and take off your shoes. While you're relaxing, I'll whip up a couple of smoked sturgeon sandwiches on rye with some marvelous pickles a guy on Delancey Street puts up for me." The Prince of Wales told her, "Miss Brice, I thank you from the bottom of my heart," then he took off his shoes.
• Comedians George Burns and Harpo Marx were members of the Hillcrest Country Club in Beverly Hills, as so many Jewish comedians were. Unfortunately, the Hillcrest Country Club once briefly considered kicking them out. Why? On an especially hot day, the two comedians had played a round of golf wearing only their underwear.
• Sharon Linkletter, Art's daughter, made a lot of her own clothing. Once she made a bikini from a pattern, then showed the bottom of the bikini to her mother. Her mother asked, "Where are you going to wear that?" Sharon said, "On the bottom, of course." Her mother replied, "I mean - are you going to wear that in public?"
Competition
• W.C. Fields was so competitive that watching movies by other good comedians made him ill. He once started to watch a movie by Charlie Chaplin, but he grew so ill that he had to leave the movie theater. When he was asked his opinion of Mr. Chaplin, Mr. Fields snarled, "The son of a bitch is a ballet dancer - and if I get a good chance, I'll kill him with my bare hands."
• Comedian Sid Caesar, star of Your Show of Shows, was good - very good. How good was he? While fellow comedian Robin Williams was watching some of the old episodes of Your Show of Shows, a woman who was also in the audience told him, "You'll never be that good."
After voice and likability, it's temperament (too emotional) or stamina--all BS that no one uses to dismiss male candidates!
From Wonkette article--
I have gotten so tired of hearing about how women's voices make men feel that every time a man - any man, really - opens his mouth, I am preemptively annoyed, on principle.

On a RERUNConan (from 4/11/18) it's Conan Without Borders: Italy.
A new season of Doctor Who arrives in 2020, exact date to be announced. But to whet the appetite of true Whovians, the first trailer has been unleashed, and it's got a lot of action to unpack.
Goran Višnjic (ER) and Robert Glenister (Paranoid) will join the previously announced Stephen Fry (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and Lenny Henry (Broadchuch) as guest stars for the new season when the venerable sci-fi import returns to BBC America in early 2020.
Glenister noted that joining the new season's ensemble feels a bit like time travel: "I first appeared in Doctor Who in 'The Caves of Androzani' at the tender age of 24 in 1984. Thirty-five years later, I got to be in it again at the not-so-tender age of nearly 60. How time flies!"
The 56-year-old series premiered in the UK and has featured 12 men who have played the lead character, the Time Lord known simply as The Doctor. That changed in the last season when the iconic role was given to the first woman, Jodie Whittaker, who now returns for her second season.
Topless female activists on Sunday interrupted a demonstration in Madrid commemorating the legacy of Spain's former dictator Francisco Franco, 44 years after his death.
Chanting "for fascism no honor and no glory," half a dozen women from feminist group Femen, with the same slogan emblazoned across their chests, burst into the crowd when it reached Madrid's Plaza de Oriente. They were quickly removed by police.
Hundreds of Franco supporters turned out for the march, which is held around Nov. 20 every year to mark the anniversary of the dictator's death. Some demonstrators carried flags with Francoist icons and held an arm aloft in the fascist salute.
The leader of Spain's fascist Falange party, Jesus Muñoz, said they were marching against the "desecration" of Franco's remains, which were exhumed in October, and against Spain's historical-memory law which recognizes those who suffered during the dictatorship.
Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975, and his nationalist legacy still divide Spain and its political parties.
A high-profile college football match between Harvard and Yale was interrupted for more than an hour after hundreds of students stormed the field to demand the two elite institutions stop investing in fossil fuels.
Students and alumni from Harvard and Yale disrupted the American football match in New Haven, Connecticut, at half-time to demand the universities take more action to tackle climate change.
Over 200 people chanted: "Hey Hey! Ho Ho! Fossil fuels have got to go!"
They were initially met by boos from some of the 50,000 people in attendance, but members of the crowd -and even some of the players - gradually started to join the demonstration.
French ski resorts are being forced to spend millions reinforcing cable car supports and other structures being weakened by subsidence as climate change causes ice to melt.
Chamonix has spent £1.3 million shoring up cable car supports this year. Les Deux Alpes and Val-Thorens have also had to reinforce structures in danger of collapse because they are built on permafrost - layers of ground under the surface that remain permanently frozen, which are shrinking at an increasingly rapid rate.
Concern is growing for the future of France's lucrative ski industry and resorts facing shrinking glaciers and diminishing snow cover are struggling to preserve the fragile Alpine environment from the consequences of pollution.
Climate change has caused permafrost to thaw in recent years so that it can no longer serve as a natural cement. Cable car supports and foundations of mountain shelters have started moving and structures above the ground have begun to weaken and crack.
A recent survey of 947 resort structures built on permafrost found that 45 ski lifts, six shelters and one tunnel were at high risk of "destabilisation".
Deborah Tabart, the chairman of the Australian Koala Foundation, estimated that over 1,000 koalas have been killed from the fires, and as much as 80 percent of their habitat has been destroyed, Forbes reported.
The organization predicted that the Koala population was "functionally extinct" in May, when it estimated that there were fewer than 80,000 koalas left in the wild - prior to the recent casualties - the BBC reported. An animal is "functionally extinct" if it has so few pairs that it is unlikely to produce a new generation.
They also play a shrinking role in their ecosystem, and their long-term viability as a species grows more unlikely, Forbes reported.
Aside from the danger the koalas face directly from the fire, their main food supply, eucalyptus trees, are also unlikely to survive the flames. A fully-grown koala will eat up to two pounds of eucalyptus leaves per day. Although the trees are expected to grow back after the fire, it will leave the remaining koalas hungry for months.
The watch towers, double-locked doors and video surveillance in the Chinese camps are there "to prevent escapes." Uighurs and other minorities held inside are scored on how well they speak the dominant Mandarin language and follow strict rules on everything down to bathing and using the toilet, scores that determine if they can leave.
"Manner education" is mandatory, but "vocational skills improvement" is offered only after a year in the camps.
Voluntary job training is the reason the Chinese government has given for detaining more than a million ethnic minorities, most of them Muslims. But a classified blueprint leaked to a consortium of news organizations shows the camps are instead precisely what former detainees have described: Forced ideological and behavioral re-education centers run in secret.
The classified documents lay out the Chinese government's deliberate strategy to lock up ethnic minorities even before they commit a crime, to rewire their thoughts and the language they speak.
The papers also show how Beijing is pioneering a new form of social control using data and artificial intelligence. Drawing on data collected by mass surveillance technology, computers issued the names of tens of thousands of people for interrogation or detention in just one week.
Donald Trump Jr (R-Obtuse) has been criticised for a "despicable" and "ignorant" comment about people with HIV.
The US president's son appeared to joke about the risks of having sex with people who have the virus in a Twitter post.
It came in response to an article by an LGBT+ website which said prophylactic drugs were highly effective in preventing the spread of HIV.
The writer, David Hudson, concluded: "Refusing to entertain the idea of dating an HIV-positive person might just mean you miss out on the love of your life."
However Mr Trump showed no sign of having read the article when he retweeted its title, "What you stand to lose by not having sex with people with HIV", and added the comment: "Well I can think of one thing".
The last Sumatran rhinoceros in Malaysia died on Saturday, leaving the smallest species of rhino, which once roamed across Asia, surviving in small numbers mostly in Indonesia.
The 25-year-old female rhino, named Iman, who has been cared for in a wildlife reserve since her capture in 2014, died of cancer in the state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.
The Sumatran rhino was declared extinct in the wild in Malaysia in 2015. Malaysia's last male Sumatran rhino died in May this year.
The species has now almost disappeared from the wild, and conservationists estimate that only about 30 to 80 Sumatran rhinos survive, mostly on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and on the Indonesian side of Borneo.
Six years after "Frozen" kicked up a pop-culture blizzard, the sequel to Elsa, Anna and Olaf's adventures snowed-in the box office with an estimated $127 million debut domestically and $350.2 million worldwide, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The opening for the Walt Disney Co.'s "Frozen 2" buried several records. It's the highest-grossing debut ever for any animated film globally. It marks a new high in the U.S. and Canada for an animated movie released outside of the summer season. And it's the largest opening for any Walt Disney Animation Studios release.
Last week's top film, "Ford v Ferrari" slipped 49% in its second week to a distant second with $16 million. James Mangold's film, also a Disney release (courtesy of the studio's acquisition of 20th Century Fox), has grossed $103.8 million worldwide thus far. Starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, the movie has also joined this season's sped-up Oscar race. (The Academy Awards will be held Feb. 9 this year.)
Marielle Heller's Mister Rogers drama "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," starring Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys, is also in the Oscar mix. It opened in third with $13.5 million. That was roughly on target for the Sony Pictures release, which cost about $25 million to make. It, too, should be positioned to play well through the holidays.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
1. "Frozen," $127 million ($223.2 million international).
2. "Ford v Ferrari," $16 million ($14.7 million international).
3. "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," $13.5 million.
4. "21 Bridges," $9.3 million ($2.7 million international).
5. "Midway," $4.7 million ($5.4 million international).
6. "Playing With Fire," $4.6 million.
7. "The Good Liar," $3.8 million.
8. "Charlie's Angels," $3.2 million ($4.6 million international).
9. "Last Christmas," $3 million ($6.7 million international).
10. "Joker," $2.8 million ($7.6 million international).
