Lucy Mangan: "Male feminist allies: please tell street harassers to f**k off" (Stylist)
And there was a man in his late 20s who stepped the other way, towards the man [the street harasser]. He said, "Fuck off, mate," and waited until the other man slunk away. "Thank you," said the mother as she hurried past. "No worries," he said, and turned the corner and went - I hope with a little bit of pride in his good deed warming him - about his day.

Moya Lothian-McLean: "Catcalling: 'Why does shedding one item of clothing give men the right to objectify you in summer?'" (Stylist)
Alternatively, spray the turd with mace. Personally, I'm going to wear a badge - right over my tit - that says 'Catcall me if you've got a tiny dick.' I think it's the perfect summer accessory.

Hadley Freeman: "Rain Phoenix on her new album River: 'My brother has been my guiding light'" (The Guardian)
Two decades after losing her brother, Rain Phoenix is finally able to share his music. She talks about 'the wild animal' of grief - and learning to sing with River on street corners

Rich Pelley: "Thurston Moore: 'I was a nerd and a dork at school'" (The Guardian)
The musician, 61, talks about hanging out in record stores, meeting his heroes and why he wants to write a 24-hour song.

Rachel Aroesti: Why are teenagers on TikTok obsessed with an eerie 1950s song? (The Guardian)
The video-sharing platform beloved by Gen Z is giving new life to some very old tunes - from YMCA to a twee number by a mid-century sister act.

Alex Hern: "'Adults don't get it': why TikTok is facing greater scrutiny" (The Guardian)
Success of video-sharing app among young has brought with it investigations over child safety.

Trivia Question of the Day

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. On what date does the UK celebrate Guy Fawkes and his failed assassination attempt?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

When astronaut Alan Shepard walked on the moon in 1971, he also hit two golf balls on the lunar surface, using a golf head attached to a lunar sample scoop handle. What size golf head did he use?

       Six-Iron                                                      Source

Rear Admiral Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. (November 18, 1923 - July 21, 1998) was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and businessman. In 1961 he became the first American to travel into space, and in 1971 he walked on the Moon.

Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 mission, piloting the Apollo Lunar Module Antares to the most accurate landing of the Apollo missions. At age 47, he became the fifth, the oldest, and the earliest-born person to walk on the Moon, and the only one of the Mercury Seven astronauts to do so. During the mission, he hit two golf balls on the lunar surface.

This was the first mission to broadcast extensive color television coverage from the lunar surface, using the Westinghouse Lunar Color Camera. While on the Moon, Shepard used a Wilson six-iron head attached to a lunar sample scoop handle to drive golf balls. Despite thick gloves and a stiff spacesuit, which forced him to swing the club with one hand, Shepard struck two golf balls, driving the second, as he jokingly put it, "miles and miles and miles".        Source

   A Wilson Six Iron.

Dave responded:
6 iron. My childhood hero Alan Shepard was a 1944 Naval Academy graduate and served on a destroyer in the Pacific Theater during the last year of WWII. After the war he attended flight school during the time the navy was converting to jet fighters. After training other pilots in flying jets, Shepard was assigned to a carrier combat wing sent to Korea, but the 1953 armistice ended the war before he arrived. After Korea, Shepard was a military test pilot, which was the group NASA picked from for its first 7 astronauts in 1959. Shepard was chosen to be the first American in space, although the 15 minute flight wasn't designed to orbit the earth. Shepard was later chosen to fly another Mercury mission, but the Mercury program was cancelled, much to his frustration. During the Gemini program Shepard was grounded for medical reasons, that didn't clear up for a number of years. Finally in 1969 Shepard's problem with his inner ear was cured by surgery and he was returned to full flight status after years of supervising astronaut training. Shepard was originally assigned to command Apollo 13, but there were objections from other astronauts to his being on the flight after only a short training period, so he missed out on that near disaster, and was assigned to Apollo 14 instead. At age 47, Alan Shepard holds the record as the oldest man to walk on the moon. Shepard retired from both NASA and the Navy in 1974 with the rank of Rear Admiral.

Anecdotes

Mothers

• Mordecai Gerstein won the 2004 Caldecott Medal for illustrating the book The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. When he was a child, his mother made a scrapbook for him. In it were photographs of famous works of art that she had cut out of magazines. Mr. Gerstein says, "It was my own little art museum, and I lay on the floor and went through it over and over again 'til I'd memorized every picture."

• What kind of a family does an artist come from? From a family of eccentrics and non-conformists? Not necessarily. The mother of renowned American artist Cy Twombly was hardly eccentric and non-conformist. Cy said to her, "You would be happy if I just kept well dressed and [had] good manners." She replied, "What else is there?"

Movies

• In 2008, HBO broadcast the TV miniseries John Adams, which starred David Morse as George Washington. Much attention was paid to detail, and craftspeople built much period furniture. In fact, Mr. Morse saw a portrait of George Washington on a set, but when he looked closer at it, he saw that "it was actually a portrait of me as Washington, that they'd made a point of making sure the portraits were of the actors as the characters."

• Film director Josef von Sternberg was an artist. One day, he was preparing to take a full-length shot of Marlene Dietrich. Celebrity photographer John Engstead noticed some dirt on the floor and asked him if he wanted it cleaned up. Mr. Sternberg replied, "If anybody looks at the dirt instead of Ms. Dietrich, none of us are any good."

Names and Titles

• When illustrator Erik Blegvad was growing up, his mother always encouraged him. Mr. Blegvad writes that their home always had lots of art books, and his mother gave his artistic endeavors "only lavish praise and encouragement." In July 1947, following World War II, a more grown-up Mr. Blegvad went to Paris, France, to find work as an illustrator. He took with him a bicycle, many drawings, and 10 pounds of butter that his mother said was "as good as gold" because of food shortages. However, Mr. Blegvad arrived when Paris was full of partiers celebrating Bastille Day, and he partied along with him. When the days-long party with much dancing in the streets was over, his pockets were empty and his butter had melted. Fortunately, he found work quickly. By the way, he and N.M. (Niels Mogens) Bodecker, his friend and fellow Danish illustrator, lived for a while in Westport, Connecticut, where in their studio they kept a large bulletin board on which they put a collection of letters and other documents bearing their names - which had been variously misspelled.

• George Catlin sought to paint Native Americans and Native American culture in the first half of the 1800s before their way of life was lost. One place he wished to see was the Pipestone Quarry, from which the native Americans mined the red mineral from which they made the bowls of their pipes. Eventually, he found it in southwestern Minnesota. He sent some samples to noted mineralogist Charles T. Jackson, who stated that Mr. Catlin had discovered a new mineral. Mr. Jackson named the mineral Catlinite. During his earlier travels throughout the West, Mr. Catlin made a realistic painting of the Sioux Chief One Horn, then showed it to other Native Americans, who had never seen a realistic painting before. Astonished, they gave Mr. Catlin the name "Medicine Painter."

• Japanese painter and printmaker Katsushika Hokusai changed his name more than 30 times - whenever he wanted the meaning of his name to change. "Hokusai" means "Star of the Northern Constellation," while his final name, Gwakio Rojin, which is written on his gravestone, means "Old Man Mad About Drawing." He is most famous for his series of prints titled Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. One of the prints is The Great Wave, which shows an enormous wave about to crash onto three boats - Mount Fuji can be seen framed by the curve of the wave.

'Grease' Outfit Sells for $405,000

Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton-John's iconic Grease leather jacket and black pants sold at auction Saturday for $405,000, more than double its pre-auction estimate.

The combined outfit, which the actress-singer wore during the film's closing performance of "You're the One That I Want," was the top-selling item in a Julien's Live auction dedicated to Newton-John's personal collection; the black leather jacket itself sold for $243,200 and the pants had a high bid of $162,500.

All proceeds from the sale of the Grease jacket and pants will benefit the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, while a portion of the 500+ items also sold at auction will also go toward that organization; in 2018, Newton-John revealed she is battling cancer for a third time.

Other notable items at the Newton-John auction included the actress' custom-made "Pink Ladies" jacket - monogrammed "Sandy" - from the Grease shoot ($50,000) and a Grease movie poster signed by Newton-John and her co-star John Travolta; expected to fetch $1,000, the movie poster ultimately sold for $64,000. An outfit the singer wore during a performance of "Physical" on the Merv Griffin Show in 1981 hit a high bid of $31,000.

Back Teaching Sunday School

Jimmy Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter taught a Bible lesson on life after death Sunday less than two weeks after breaking his pelvis in a fall.

Using a walker, the 95-year-old Democrat slowly entered the crowded sanctuary at Maranatha Baptist Church in the southwest Georgia town of Plains.

With help, Carter sat on a motorized lift chair at the front of the room to teach a 45-minute lesson based on the Old Testament book of Job.

Carter is the oldest U.S. ex-President ever and has been teaching Bible lessons since he was in his teens. He missed one Sunday school class after the pelvis fracture.

Rev. Tony Lowden said Secret Service agents, relatives and fellow church members all discouraged Carter from teaching because of the injury, but he insisted.

Backs Down From 'Accidental' Edits

Delta

Lately, airline company Delta has been facing a wave of public criticism for streaming strangely edited in-flight movie versions of Booksmart and Rocketman that skipped over same-sex kisses and sex scenes while leaving in heterosexual sex scenes, violence, and adult language. The Washington Post says Delta's version of Booksmart even cut out "the words 'vagina' and 'genitals,'" as well as conversations about a "lesbian sex act" and a urinary tract infection. Meanwhile, in Rocketman, Delta's version reportedly included the scene where John Reid physically attacks Taron Egerton's Elton Job but cut out the parts where the two of them have sex, all of which seemed to imply a double-standard about what is and is not okay for an in-flight movie.

Now, though, Delta has announced that it's going to restore the edits made to those movies, with the company telling Variety that it is "immediately putting a new process in place for managing content available through Delta's in-flight entertainment" and will be working with the studio to "provide a special Delta edit that retains the LBGTQ+ love scenes in both Booksmart and Rocketman." The airline also shifts the blame to the movie studios that provide movies like this, saying they are often given a theatrical version and and an edited version, and it wasn't until now that it realized the edited versions of these movies "unnecessarily excluded" content that was "well within our guidelines."

In its statement, Delta also noted that it allows passengers to watch stuff like Gentleman Jack, Imagine Me And You, Moonlight, and "countless content in the past" that has not been edited like this, but it is important to point out that this is not the first time Delta has been accused of purposefully editing out LGBTQ content. As the aforementioned Washington Post story points out, scenes from Carol were cut out a few years ago, as was a kiss scene in Bad Moms with Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn (but not a "woman-on-man hookup").

Satellites

In recent months, satellite photos have streamed into a former textile factory here revealing a build-up of potent Russian air defense systems in Ukraine, a serious new threat to NATO aircraft.

This is not a secret CIA facility, and the images didn't come from a billion-dollar surveillance satellite.

They were taken by private spacecraft - some the size of a loaf of bread - operated by Planet Labs, a Silicon Valley company that is leading a revolution in how humans glimpse Earth from space.

A short stroll from the downtown San Francisco headquarters of Yelp and LinkedIn, Planet operates the largest and least expensive fleet of satellites in history - the first to take pictures of the entire landmass of the globe, once a day, and sell them to the public. The company is part of a fast-growing commercial satellite industry that is democratizing insights once available mainly to people with Top Secret government security clearances.

Marshall and his partners built their first satellite in a garage, applying the principles of the smart phone, stuffing a sophisticated camera and telescope into a rectangular box that weighs as much as a bowling ball.

California Fires

PG&E

Over the last week, the Kincade Fire has torn through nearly 78,000 acres of California wine country, forcing about 180,000 people to evacuate. Meanwhile, millions have gone without electricity, often for days at a time.

Hospitals scrambled to find refrigerators for medications, people bundled their children to keep them warm during cool nights, and seniors were left alone in the dark.

The state's largest utility, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E), is responsible for these blackouts, and possibly for the fire itself.

In fact, according to the The Wall Street Journal, the utility company's equipment led to more than 1,500 fires between June 2014 and December 2017.

After a PG&E pipeline exploded in 2010, killing eight people, state regulators started investigating the company. They found that PG&E had collected $224 million more than it was authorized to collect in oil and gas revenue in the decade before the explosion. Meanwhile, it spent millions less than it was supposed to on maintenance and generally fell short of industry safety standards.

'Not Our Mission'

Private Fire Crews

The engines, big and small, came from all over the country to fight the Kincade fire in the Sonoma county wine region of California. There were trucks from Nevada, South Dakota, Colorado - and from the wildfire protection unit of home insurer AIG.

As fires have increasingly encroached on development in California's wildlands in recent years, communities are grappling with a new paradigm of risk. If the fire creates an existential crisis for people living in high-risk areas, it also creates one for the companies that insure their homes.

Insurers of houses, timber and agriculture have contracted with private firefighting agencies for decades. But now, thanks to longer, more devastating fire seasons, the business is booming.

While some wealthy communities and individuals have contracted their own private firefighting services to defend mansions on hilltops from flying embers, the majority of these agencies work on behalf of insurance companies. And as fire risk extends to more homes in California's flammable brushland and forest, these crews are becoming a fixture in middle class neighborhoods. It is something of a return to a pre-American civil war model of pay-for-play firefighting, before the government employed first responders.

Insured losses for the 2018 California wildfire season topped $12bn. Insurance companies are looking for any way to reduce payouts in the future, whether by raising rates, dropping coverage, or putting new risk mitigation measures into place - including, in some cases, these kinds of private fire crews.

Genetic Diversity

Wild Bison

Evidence is mounting that wild North American bison are gradually shedding their genetic diversity across many of the isolated herds overseen by the U.S. government, weakening future resilience against disease and climate events in the shadow of human encroachment.

The extent of the creeping threat to herds overseen by the Department of Interior - the backbone of wild bison conservation efforts for North America - is coming into sharper focus amid advances in genetic studies.

Preliminary results of a genetic population analysis commissioned by the National Park Service show three small federal herds would almost certainly die off - extinguishing their DNA lineage - within 200 years under current management practices that limit transfers for interbreeding among distant herds.

The study is awaiting peer review by other scientists. It does not include Yellowstone National Park's herd of some 5,000 unfenced bison, the largest federal conservation herd that's seen by millions of people who visit the park annually.

The preliminary findings were presented at a workshop of the American Bison Society in the buffalo-raising Native American community of Pojoaque, amid impassioned discussions about ensuring the iconic mammal's lasting place in the wild.

Makes Cats 'High'?

Catnip

Offer a pinch of catnip or a catnip-filled toy to your pet feline, and her response might be dramatic ... and silly. She may roll on her back, dart wildly around, drool, lick the catnip and rub it on her face and body, or flop over and lie there purring.

Her actions seem goofy and comical, and somewhat resemble the uncoordinated and gleeful behavior of someone who's had a little too much to drink or is pleasantly under the influence of recreational drugs.

But is that what's happening here? Does catnip make cats high?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) belongs to the mint family Lamiaceae, which includes aromatic herbs such as rosemary, sage, oregano and basil. The compound that plays the biggest role in the so-called catnip effect in domestic cats is produced in specialized glands in catnip's leaves and flowers and is called nepetalactone, said Jim Simon, a professor of plant biology and co-director of the Center for Sensory Sciences and Innovation at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Not all cats respond strongly to catnip. But far more cats may be susceptible to the plant than once thought.

Weekend Box Office

'Terminator: Dark Fate'

Despite generally favorable reviews and the return of star Linda Hamilton and producer James Cameron, "Terminator: Dark Fate" has opened well below expectations at the box office. Studios on Sunday estimate that "Dark Fate" earned only $29 million from over 4,000 North American locations. The film from Paramount Pictures cost a reported $185 million to produce.

It was enough to win the top spot at the box office, but it's a weak victory for the franchise. Although "Dark Fate," which was directed by "Deadpool's" Tim Miller, received much better reviews (currently at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes) and was praised for being a return to form to Cameron's original films, it opened just slightly ahead of 2015's roundly derided "Terminator: Genisys."

Second place went to "Joker," which added $13.9 million, bringing its global earnings to $934 million in just five weeks in theaters. "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" landed in third place in its third weekend with an additional $12.2 million. The Angelina Jolie-led sequel has grossed $84.3 million in North America.

One bright spot of the weekend, which is down nearly 19% from last year when "Bohemian Rhapsody" opened, is Focus Features' "Harriet," which is the first film ever made about Harriet Tubman. Starring Cynthia Erivo in the title role, "Harriet" performed better than expected, earning $12 million from just over 2,000 theaters to take fourth place. The film scored a coveted A+ CinemaScore from audiences, who were primarily female (62 and over the age of 35 (59%). African Americans also made up a significant portion of the audience (49%) according to exit polls.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1."Terminator: Dark Fate," $29 million ($72.9 million international).
    2."Joker," $13.9 million ($37 million international).
3."Maleficent: Mistress of Evil," $12.2 million ($40.5 million international).
    4."Harriet," $12 million.
5."The Addams Family," $8.5 million ($25.9 million international).
6."Zombieland: Double Tap," $7.4 million ($7 million international).
    7."Countdown," $5.9 million ($1.1 million international).
    8."Black and Blue," $4.1 million.
    9."Motherless Brooklyn," $3.7 million.
   10."Arctic Dogs," $3.1 million.
