Vote!
By Baron Dave Romm
Tomorrow's election is very important. The way to effect regime change is to vote, before it's too late. Already, tens of thousands of US citizens have been denied their Constitutional rights by the Republicans, and they are using every means possible to discourage YOU from voting. Robert Heinlein's prediction turned out to be true, and Bush is Nehemiah Scudder.
Where to vote and voting resources
Polling places are determined state by state, but here are some more
general sites.
Why vote: Anger at the Republicans! (a few repeats)
Why vote: If you're not angry, be ashamed at how low Bush has brought the United States
Editorial comment
Zero tolerance for Republicans.

'COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY'
from tim h
In the face of the controversial decision by the PBS network to refuse to
transmit the investigative report, the nation's top PBS stations will independently
broadcast COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY.
Directed by Emmy-award winner Danny Schechter, the 57-minute
documentary follows BBC television reporter Greg Palast as he discovers how Katherine
Harris removed up to 57,000 legal voters from registries - mostly black - five months before
the 2000 election. While the public broadcast network chiefs refused to schedule
this important report, dozens of local stations are insisting on showing the expose
before the mid-term elections.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Turned out to be a fairly sunny day, but, there was a little wreck over on the 710 - nearly 200 cars in 2 separate accidents, less than a mile apart, and both less than a mile from the house.
Between the Long Beach airport & the local police, we're accustomed to hearing a bit of air traffic, but today was a whole 'nother thing.
Heard the dulcet tones of Grace Slick singing 'White Rabbit' on tv this afternoon, then nearly sprained my neck when I realized it was the background bed for Playstation2. Not quite what I envisioned the white rabbit
meant by 'feed your head'.
Today the kid woke me up early to offer breakfast in bed. He had written up a little menu & I was to circle what I wanted. The choices were Wheat Chex, Cheerio's, broccoli or Pepsi.
Tonight, Monday, CBS opens with a fresh 'King Of Queens', then a fresh 'Yes, Dear', followed by a fresh 'Raymond', then a fresh 'Still Standing', and caps it with a fresh 'CSI: Miami'.
Scheduled on a fresh Dave are Stupid Human Tricks, Sean Hayes, Willie Nelson, and Ryan Adams.
Scheduled on a fresh Craiggers are Kiefer Sutherland, Emily Procter, and Uncle Kracker.
NBC has a fresh 3-hour-made-for-tv-remake of 'Carrie'.
Scheduled on a fresh Jay are Rebecca Romijn Stamos, Jim Belushi, Tony Bennett, and k.d. lang.
Scheduled on a fresh Conan (from 8/14/02) are Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Nealon, and They Might Be Giants.
Scheduled on a fresh Carson Daly (from 9/10/02) are Tom Green and Eve.
ABC has 'MNF', with the Dolphins visiting in Green Bay. Instead of 'Drew Carey' & 'Whose Line', which are moving to another night, there's a '20/20' 'special', where Barbara Walters interviews Justin Timberlake.
The WB has a fresh '7th Heaven' followed by a fresh 'Everwood'.
Faux has a fresh 'Boston Public', and in place of the recently cancelled 'girls club' is the RERUN of the season opener of '24', but this time, there will be commercials.
UPN offers a fresh 'The Parkers', a fresh 'One On One', a fresh 'Girlfriends', and a fresh 'Half & Half'.
At 9pm (est/pst), MTV has 3 episodes of 'The Osbournes' scheduled.
Anyone have any opinions?
Or reviews?

'The Best Of 1990-2000'
U2
U2 is preparing for Tuesday's (November 5) release of The Best Of 1990-2000, a 16-track overview of the Irish quartet's second decade. Comprising the albums Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, and All That You Can't Leave Behind--as well
as the Original Soundtracks I collaboration with Brian Eno as the Passengers--that period featured some of U2's most experimental work.
Because of that, U2 guitarist the Edge tells says the new Best Of set represents a markedly different listening experience than U2's The Best Of 1980-1990, which came out in 1998. "The period from Achtung Baby right through to
All That You Can't Leave Behind is kind of the story of us taking the idea of a rock 'n' roll band and abstracting it as far as you possibly could, and then reconstructing it again. And, you know, I think that's really, in a
nutshell, what we did during that period--at every turn it was really an attempt to find inspiring places to go as songwriters and, you know, artists."
Like its predecessor, The Best of 1990-2000 also comes in a limited-edition set with a second CD of B-sides and remixes.
A companion DVD is slated for release on December 3.
While U2 is not supporting the Best Of album with a tour, the group will be seen on CBS in late November in a concert special filmed at Ireland's Slane Castle in the summer of 2001.

Commit to Film
Sean Penn & Woody Allen
Sean Penn and Woody Allen have arrived at the altar for "Why Men Shouldn't Marry," a comedy that will mark the directorial debut of producer Steve Bing.
Bing also wrote the script and will produce through his Shangri-La Entertainment banner, which is based at Warner Bros. The film reteams the actors for the first time since Allen directed Penn in "Sweet and Lowdown."
Bing is perhaps known as the father of Elizabeth Hurley's baby son.

Coverage Critiqued
Political News
Broadcast networks are spending a little more time covering the midterm political campaign than they did four years ago, according to a study released Friday.
The ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts averaged 2.3 minutes per night covering state and federal campaigns between Labor Day and Oct. 27, the Washington-based Center for Media and Public Affairs said.
That's up from the two minutes during the 1998 campaign, the last comparable year, despite all of the attention paid to the sniper shootings in the Washington area and talk of war in
Iraq. But it's down 72 percent from 1994, when Newt Gingrich united Republicans behind his "Contract with America," helping them win control of Congress.
During the period studied this year, the evening newscasts had 265 stories about Iraq, 163 stories on the sniper and 66 on the election campaign, the study said.

Kuwait Shutters Office
Al-Jazeera
Kuwait shut down the Al-Jazeera television bureau here Sunday, charging that the Arab world's most popular satellite TV network was "not objective."
"The government informed me that the bureau is closed because Al-Jazeera channel is not objective," Saad al-Enezi, the station's bureau chief, told The Associated Press. He said he was not
given any detailed information about the decision.
Al-Enezi said he was not told if the closure was temporary or permanent.
Kuwaiti officials could not be reached for comment, but the Kuwait News Agency quoted an unidentified Information Ministry official as saying the decision was prompted by "this channel's bias
and its lack of objectivity in reporting the events that took place in Kuwait recently." The official did not elaborate.
Like other media working from Kuwait, Al-Jazeera has reported on the Oct. 8 attack on U.S. Marines training here and several subsequent shooting incidents involving American forces in this
small Gulf state and Washington ally.
Al-Jazeera has run into problems with authorities in other Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and it has been banned from operating in Bahrain and Jordan. Unlike state-run
media, the station often airs views of local opposition figures and their criticism of the countries' rulers.

First Indian Concert
Elton John
Pianist and pop star Elton John thrilled around 15,000 sentimental fans on Saturday night at his first Indian concert.
Avoiding lingering monsoon rains that had threatened to spoil the open air concert alongside the palace of a former princely ruler, the portly star glittered in
a turquoise suit ahead of the Indian Festival of Lights, which falls on Monday.
"Happy Deepavali," the singer greeted his fans. The festival is known as Deepavali in the south of India.
India has a sizeable following for pop music but has only recently become a feature on tour circuits, thanks to a fast-growing middle class.

Plate Sold at Auction
Marilyn Monroe
A silver oyster plate used by Marilyn Monroe during filming of "The Misfits" sold at auction for $1,000.
Robert W. Otto, president and CEO of a Chicago human resources consulting company, made the highest bid for the plate from the former Mapes Hotel in Reno, where Monroe stayed in 1960 during shooting.
The plate was among more than 600 items auctioned off Saturday at Lightning Auctions.
The 55-year-old Otto owns about 500 pieces of Monroe memorabilia, including a ring with an "MM" monogram on the inside once worn by Monroe and the first dress she wore to studio interviews at age 18.
Filmed almost exclusively in the Reno area from July to November 1960, "The Misfits" was the only movie Monroe and Clark Gable appeared in together and the last complete film for both.

Time To Say 'Buh-Bye'
'Bram & Alice'
A moment of silence, please, to mark the passing of Bram and Alice.
Billed as "a comedy about the shaky relationship between an incorrigible scoundrel of a novelist and his devoted fan who suddenly learn they are father and daughter," the sitcom Alfred Molina starred
as said author Bram Shepherd and Traylor Howard as long-lost daughter Alice.
Audiences and critics didn't find the premise funny. The politically correct crowd was particularly upset that when Alice first showed up her father tried to hit on her. Fewer and fewer watched after
that no-no was resolved, and the daughter moved in with her dad.
For its four-episode run, the show averaged 9.1 million viewers and ranked 55th among all prime-time offerings.
The demise of Bram and Alice marks another sitcom failure for British-born Molina, who also bombed in CBS' Ladies Man in 1999. At least he can take consolation in his lauded role as famed
muralist Diego Rivera opposite Salma Hayek's Frida Kahlo in Frida, the Miramax biopic that debuted well in limited release last weekend.
Meantime, with sweeps upon us, ABC has put MDs on hiatus. Poor ratings would suggest the medic show should be pronounced dead, but ABC insists it plans to return the drama to the schedule on
December 4. During sweeps MDs' 10 p.m. Wednesday slot will be filled by the news magazine shows 20/20 and PrimeTime Live and the second hours of The Bachelor finale and Paul McCartney's concert special.

Dozens Hurt in Highway Pileup
Long Beach
Nearly 200 cars and big-rig trucks collided on the fogbound Long Beach Freeway early Sunday, injuring dozens of people, nine critically, and closing the highway for hours.
California Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Pace said 194 vehicles, including seven or eight tractor-trailers, were involved in two separate pileups. Some cars were buried under others, and some of
the injured had to be cut from their vehicles.
At least 41 people were injured, nine of them critically, he said.
Dozens of cars, vans and big-rig trucks could be seen tangled together and littering both sides of the freeway about 25 miles south of Los Angeles. Some cars were buried under others, and some of the
injured had to be cut from their vehicles.
Early morning fog may have contributed to the pileups, which started just before 7 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Douglas Kondo said.
Long Beach
Took over 10 hours for the freeway to open again. There were so many news-copters it seemed there might be gridlock overhead, too.
Re/Max Sues Over Episode
'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation'
Real estate company Re/Max International has sued CBS, alleging an episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" portrayed a shady real estate agent who used a for-sale sign that looked like a Re/Max sign.
The suit, filed Thursday in U.S. District Court, says the fictional agent illegally opened a house for a couple who ransack a closet and have sex in the home. The agent is later suspected of robbery,
pornography and homicide, according to the suit.
The agent used a real estate sign with red, white and blue bars similar to the Re/Max sign, and the sign is visible when an investigator says, "These slimes will do anything to sell a home," the suit says.
The episode aired Oct. 10. Re/Max, based in suburban Greenwood Village, says use of the sign by the unethical agent damaged the company's reputation.
The suit also names Viacom, which owns CBS, and Alliance Atlantis Communications of Toronto. The Canadian company's alleged role is not explained in the suit.

Hoping for a Smooth Election
Networks
It's the first big Election Night since the major television networks messed up — big-time, to borrow a phrase popularized by Vice resident Cheney two years ago.
Why should they be trusted again?
Election Night viewers should expect to see more cautious anchors. Networks are desperate not to make the same mistakes, and are testing complex new systems designed to replace the ones that failed in 2000.
The networks spent millions of dollars completely rebuilding Voter News Service, a consortium that counts votes, conducts exit polls and helps project winners. ABC, CBS, NBC,
CNN, Fox and The Associated Press are members.
VNS will also make available to the networks the results of an independent vote-counting operation run by the AP. CNN is taking an additional step, counting votes itself to help
project winners in 10 states with competitive contests.
In past elections, most television viewers probably weren't aware that VNS even existed. That may change this year. Networks say they will lift the curtain to explain their sources
of information and why they're doing what they're doing.
