• Ramones bass player Dee Dee Ramone was a writer of fiction (he wrote the novel Chelsea Horror Hotel), which means that he occasionally wrote fiction when he was supposed to be writing nonfiction — like many, most, or all writers of fiction, Dee Dee didn’t mind exaggerating (or lying) in order to make a good story better. For example, in his autobiography Legend of a Rock Star: A Memoir, he wrote that after he left the Ramones he started creating visual works of art when he started robbing the students of Hollywood High School in order to eat their lunches and take their pocket change but found lots of Magic Markers and other school supplies in their bags. Is this fiction? Of course! In the same autobiography, he writes about murdering three Norwegian border guards. Something tells me that if he had really done that he would not have written about it; after all, writing a confession about committing murder can interfere with getting away with murder. By the way, one of his band members remembers Dee Dee writing Legend of a Rock Star while on tour — as Dee Dee was writing it, he “was laughing his *ss off.”
• Satirist Jonathan Swift did not suffer fools gladly. He opposed astrology, and he disliked astrologers. When an astrologer named Partridge started publishing annual almanacs of prediction, Mr. Swift invented the persona of “famous astrologer Isaac Bickerstaff” and in 1707 published his own almanac — in which he predicted the death of Partridge on March 29, 1708. When March 29 arrived, Mr. Swift printed and distributed a news report he had written on the “illness and demise” of Partridge, although Partridge was still alive and well. After reading of Partridge’s death in the report, the church sexton visited Partridge’s house to find out about funeral arrangements. Partridge’s friends stared at him in the street and told him that he looked exactly like one of their deceased friends. People referred to Partridge’s wife as the “widow Partridge.” When Partridge tried to publish another almanac, his publishers tried to stop an “imposter” from using Partridge’s name. Eventually, Partridge published a pamphlet to prove that he was still alive, but even so six years passed before he was able to publish another almanac.
• In 1932, when he was a child, Ray Bradbury attended a carnival, where he saw a magician named Mr. Electrico, who let electricity make his hair stand on end and sparks fly from his teeth. He also touched the children in the audience to let their hair stand on end, and as he did so he shouted, “Live forever!” The next day, young Ray attended a funeral, and he returned to the carnival, where he hoped to find out what Mr. Electrico had meant when he shouted, “Live forever!” During their conversation, Mr. Electrico told young Ray, “You were my best friend in the Great War in France in 1918, and you were wounded and died in my arms at the battle of the Ardennes Forest. But now, here today, I see his soul shining out of your eyes. Here you are, with a new face, a new name, but the soul shining from your face is the soul of my dear dead friend. Welcome back to the world.”
• In December of 1849, in St. Petersburg, 27-year-old Feodor Dostoyevsky was scheduled to die because he had advocated civil liberties such as freedom from censorship in his native Russia — something that the czar did not want to allow. The executioners took him and his fellow advocates for civil liberties to a firing squad, and Mr. Dostoyevsky prepared to die. Before the firing squad could shoot, a messenger on horseback arrived with a last-minute reprieve from the czar — the sentences of the “radicals” had been changed from death to hard labor. When Mr. Dostoyevsky died, he was most likely unaware that the whole scene had been a setup. The czar had never meant for Mr. Dostoyevsky and the others to die; he had always intended for them to be sentenced to hard labor. The czar had created the scene to show first, his power, and second, his mercy.
George Carlin made his film debut in a romantic comedy that was also Doris Day's final film performance. Directed by Howard Morris and also starring Brian Keith, what is the title of this 1968 movie?
With Six You Get Eggroll is a 1968 American romantic comedy film directed by Howard Morris and starring Doris Day, Brian Keith, Barbara Hershey, George Carlin, and Pat Carroll. It was the first film that was produced by the CBS Television Network's film unit, Cinema Center Films, and Day's final film performance.
Source
This film was the first project under a multi-million dollar deal that Doris Day's husband and manager Martin Melcher had negotiated with CBS shortly before his death in 1968. In addition to this movie, the terms of the contract committed the network to a guaranteed five year run for a sitcom to star Day, and a minimum of two one hour musical variety specials, also featuring Day. Once the basics of the contract had been fulfilled, Day went into self-imposed retirement.

With Six You Get Eggroll. I couldn’t remember the title, although I’m sure I saw it years ago on TV. While googling I came across a Roger Ebert review, and he said it was okay but not that great. Doris Day’s last film was the only one that inferred she spent the night with a man outside of marriage. Whether or not they slept together wasn’t clear because Day’s proper image still had to be preserved, even though it is quite impossible for a 46 year old widowed mother to lose her virginity a second time. That ship had sailed I think.

Saturday Night Live returned to the studio last night to open its 46th season with host Chris Rock and Megan Thee Stallion. The season premiere, which introduced Jim Carrey as Joe Biden and featured Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris and Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, drew and 7.765 million total viewers and a 1.68 rating among adults 18-49 in “fast official” Live+Same Day results from Nielsen, special-ordered by NBC.
That was SNL’s #1 most-watched season debut in four years and second-most-watched in 12 years, only behind the 2016 opener a month before the last Presidential election. Versus the year-ago premiere, last night’s telecast was up +27% in total viewers (7.765 million vs. 6.107 million) and up +26% in 18-49 (1.68 vs. 1.33). SNL traditionally has done well in the run-up to Presidential elections; the previous season opener high mark 12 years ago also was during an election year, 2008, when Tina Fey’s impersonation of Sarah Palin dominated the pop culture conversation.
The Season 46 premiere was the second most watched SNL episode in more than three years, only behind last season’s blockbuster Dec. 21 telecast hosted by Eddie Murphy with musical guest Lizzo (and a cameo by Rock) as well as the second top-rated in 18-49, also behind the Eddie Murphy episode, in two years.
SNL ranks as the #1 most-watched entertainment telecast of the week to date on the Big 4 networks and #2 in adults 18-49 behind only Fox’s The Masked Singer (1.87).
A music scholar has discovered which baseball film inspired John Lennon’s “Grow Old With Me,” solving the decades-old mystery about the origin of one of the singer’s final songs prior to his 1980 murder.
The opening lyric in “Grow Old With Me” quotes Robert Browning’s 1864 poem “Rabbi ben Ezra,” “Grow old along with me / The best is yet to be.” Lennon had admitted that he was inspired to write the song after watching a baseball movie on television during a trip to Bermuda, but the actual film Lennon watched remained unknown for 40 years.
However, in the upcoming book John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life, Kenneth Womack writes that the 1978 made-for-TV movie A Love Affair: The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig Story — about the New York Yankees legend who died at the age of 37 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — was the baseball movie that Lennon viewed.
According to the Guardian, Womack researched television schedules and baseball movies from the era before discovering that actress Blythe Danner’s character in A Love Affair quotes the same Browning poem used in “Grow Old With Me.”
“Thanks very much for sending me that book of poems. I especially liked the one by Robert Browning that goes, ‘Grow old along with me! / The best is yet to be,’” Danner’s Eleanor says.
Mean Girls Day, being exactly one month before Election Day, served a timely opportunity for the cast and crew of Mean Girls to remind fans of their civic duty. The 16th anniversary of Mean Girls Day saw the cast – Tina Fey, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer and more – reunite in an effort to encourage viewers to vote in the upcoming election.
The virtual reunion was moderated by Katie Couric and had members of the cast also share memories from filming.
Mean Girls remains a cult classic. Released in 2004, the teen comedy follows Cady (Lindsay Lohan) as she navigates the social codes of her new high school. Written by Tina Fey, the film endures as a classic of the genre with memorable lines such as “get in loser, we’re going shopping”, “I’m a mouse, duh” and “that’s so fetch.” The movie was adapted into a musical in 2017 with the same name.
The reboot of classic British comedy series Spitting Image is set to premiere on Facebook – a day after its UK debut.
The Avalon-produced puppet parody, which is headed up creatively by co-creator Roger Law and The Simpsons’ Jeff Westbrook as showrunner, will launch on Facebook Premiere at 9PM PT and will be available for 24 hours. It was commissioned in the UK by BritBox, the streaming service run by ITV and BBC Studios.
The show, which was well liked in many liberal circles in the States, is still expected to find a home for the full season, however, the fact that the comedy is quite close to the bone, featuring a skewering of the Commander in Chief, made it politically tougher to land a deal with one of the major linear broadcast networks.
Writers on the show include: Al Murray, Bert Tyler-Moore & George Jeffrie, Bill Odenkirk, Brona C. Titley, David X. Cohen, Gemma Arrowsmith, Jason Hazeley & Nico Tatarowicz, Karl Minns, Keisha Zollar, Laura Major, Matt Forde, Patric Verrone, Phil Wang, Richard Herring, Sophie Duker and Travis Jay.
The show is ultra-topical with scripts being written and new puppets made as close to each episode as possible. Its influence on popular culture and television has been widespread. French comedy Les Guignols, which has been remade by Fox as Let’s Be Real with Robert Smigel, was originally inspired by Spitting Image in the 1980s.
The Trump administration’s credibility crisis continues as the president is mocked for apparently signing a blank piece of paper with a marker in photos taken at Walter Reed military hospital, in a vain attempt to show him working while fighting coronavirus.
On Saturday night, the White House released photos of Donald Trump (R-Compromised) appearing hard at work while in hospital, where he remained for a second night after a “very concerning” period.
But Mr Trump’s attempts to appear undefeated by Covid-19 were quickly picked apart by eagle-eyes commentators, who took to social media to accuse him of staging the photos.
Jon Ostrower, editor-in-chief of aviation publication The Air Current, took a closer look at data embedded in the photos shared by the White House, and found they were taken just 10 minutes apart but showed the president working in two different places.
White House reporter Andrew Feinberg also examined the photos and upon zooming into one of them, found that Mr Trump “appears to be signing his name to a blank sheet of paper”.
The name of the former baseball commissioner who never had a Black player in the majors during his long reign is being pulled off all future MVP plaques after more than 75 years.
Kenesaw Mountain Landis won't be depicted on the annual awards presented by the Baseball Writers’ Association of the America, the group said Friday. The decision came after 89% of its membership voted this week for removal.
MLB will redesign the trophies, said Jack O’Connell, BBWAA secretary-treasurer. The AL and NL winners awards in this virus-shortened season will be announced on Nov. 12.
Landis became MLB’s first commissioner in 1920 and no Blacks played in the majors during his control that ended with his death in 1944. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 and Larry Doby followed later that year.
The South Pacific territory of New Caledonia chose to remain French on Sunday, narrowly rejecting independence in a tightly-fought referendum marked by a high turnout.
The vote rejecting a breakaway from France after almost 170 years came in at 53.26 percent, down from 56.7 percent in a referendum two years ago.
Sunday's vote was part of a carefully negotiated decolonisation plan agreed in 1998 which ended a deadly conflict between the mostly pro-independence indigenous Kanak population and the descendants of European settlers.
Another referendum can be held by 2022 so long as the poll is requested by at least a third of the local legislature.
New Caledonia, situated between Australia and Fiji and sometimes called "The Pebble", was seized by France in 1853 and is home to 270,000 people.
U.S. and tribal officials are celebrating completion of a $34 million fish bypass system at a Nevada dam that will allow a threatened trout species to return to some of its native spawning grounds for the first time in more than a century.
Construction of the side channel with fish-friendly screens is a major step toward someday enabling Lahontan cutthroat trout to make the same 100-mile (160-kilometer) journey — upstream from a desert lake on tribal land northeast of Reno to Lake Tahoe atop the Sierra — that they did before the dam was built in 1905.
The largest trout in North America, Lahontan cutthroats grew as big as 60 pounds (27 kilograms) when they climbed 2,500 feet (762 meters) through mountain river canyons to Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada line, elevation 6,228 feet (1,898 meters).
The new bypass houses an 80-foot-wide (24 meters), 390-foot-long (118 meters) horizontal fish screen — actually a metal plate with slots that pushes water down through the water system while sending the fish and other debris through the side channel.
Cutthroat trout also are native to parts of Oregon, Utah and Wyoming.
As the world warms up, melting ice sheets across the globe are exposing everything from trapped methane gas to Viking remains.
Now a new discovery has been made in the receding snow packs: the remains of 800-year-old penguins.
Having discovered what initially appeared to be fresh Adélie penguin remains at Cape Irizar on the Antarctic coastline, researchers were surprised to discover that carbon-dating put the carcasses at a minimum of 800 years old.
Some of the less well-preserved remains even date back around 5,000 years, the team says.
