Baron Dave Romm's Review

Bush Knew I

By Baron Dave Romm

Bush Knew I

Warnings Before 9/11

In addition to collecting CDs, I collect urls. In honor of BartFest in Las Vegas, here are a bunch of links to articles and lists that the Bush administration would rather not have people visit. These are a few of the recent ones, gleaned from Bartcop, Buzzflash, Smirking Chimp, etc, from May onward. I've grouped them into subject matter, and pared down the entries. The full list is MUCh longer. Tested as of 9/29/02

The Warnings:

Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual artist and a noble of Ladonia with a radio show, a very weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here.

Reader Observation

from 'Mr. B'

Americans should be more understanding about Madelyne Gorman Toogood, who was videotaped beating her 4-year-old daughter.  Ms. Toogood was just making a "preemptive attack" against the girl who could have threatened Ms. Toogood in a few years with weapons of mass destruction like AK47s.

MAYDAY! MAYDAY!

from Alvin

The Bush misadministration wants the UN to set a seven-day deadline for Iraq to accept a 'very tough & unambiguous' new resolution because the pResident is getting impatient, what with Halloween & the mid-term elections just around the corner.

MAYDAY! MAYDAY!
{Sung to 'Monday Monday' by The Mama's & The Papa's}

{As Sung By Commander-and-Thief, Dubya Bush}

{instrumental intro}

Monday, Monday
Smells blood to me
Tuesday morning
It was all I hoped it would be
Oh, Wednesday morning
Wednesday morning couldn't guarantee
That Thursday evening Saddam would still
Be playing with me

Friday, Friday
Can't trust that day
Oh and, Saturday
Sometimes it just turns out my way
Oh, Sunday morning Igave him my warning
Of what was to be
Oh, damn Saddam
How could he not take me seriously?

Mayday! Mayday!
Mayday! Mayday!
Mayday! Mayday! - revenge is mine {mine}, yeah
Saddam, it's payback time
Saddam, it's payback time
Regime change in Iraqis my plan

Monday, Monday
Still have one friend
Tuesday morning
My loyal poodle, Tony Blair
Oh, Wednesday morning
Wednesday morning couldn't guarantee
That Thursday evening Saddam would still
Be playing with me

Mayday! Mayday!
Mayday! Mayday!
Mayday! Mayday! - revenge is mine {mine}, yeah
Saddam, it's payback time
Saddam, it's payback time
Regime change in Iraq is my plan

Friday, Friday
Can't trust that day
Oh and, Saturday
It might turns out my way
Oh Sunday, Sunday
Bomb Iraq away
Monday, Monday
Mayday! Mayday!...

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

The trip to Vegas started out uneventful enough. Rented a car for a number of reasons, but mostly because there's no AC the family's current buggy. Were supposed to get a Chevy Cavalier, but they ran out, so we were upgraded to a 2002 cherry red Mustang (with a freaking wind foil on the back)! I don't mind a colorful car, but prefer something that doesn't attract the attention of every chippy 'tween here & Stateline. But, we were good little mice, and there were no speeding tickets.

Booked the room through TravelWorm.com, and ended up at Fitzgerald's, downtown (for $39/night). It was the quietest hotel I've ever been in in Vegas (not saying the place was dead - just great sound-proofing). The room had a fabulous view of the city & a huge chunk of the surrounding areas. At this point, I highly recommend both TravelWorm and Fitzgerald's - there were no modifications or hidden fees, no hitches or glitches.

Initially, the plan was for the kid to stay home with a babysitter, but had 2 sitters flake, so he got to come along. He's been to Vegas before - my dad hates LA, but loves Las Vegas, so when dear old dad 'visits', it usually means we end up in the land of not-so-loose slots. I started visiting the parents in Vegas back in '71. Think this was the first trip where I didn't pack a copy of 'Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas' by Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Oh well, no hitchhikers, no ether, no bats.

I'm really tired, so tomorrow I'll explain how the BartFest bus trip was missed, and what I remember of Saturday night. ; )

Anti-War Concert at Ex-Nazi Lab

Peenemuende

This wind-swept Baltic island town (Peenemuende), once home to the Nazi ballistic missile program, resounded with music Saturday during an anti-war concert aimed at underscoring European unity and international peace.

Soviet-born cellist Mstislav Rostropovich conducted a requiem to postwar peace for a distinguished audience that included former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, German President Johannes Rau, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Daniel Coates and the British ambassador, Sir Paul Leven.

The performance has special relevance for a town with a double-edged legacy: Scientists at Peenemuende helped further missile technology that put man on the moon, but tens of thousands of Nazi-era slave laborers died in the Third Reich's race to build the rockets.

More than 20,000 of the slave laborers died and about 5,000 people were killed in ballistic missile attacks on England, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The famous Peenemuende scientists included Wernher von Braun, who as an administrator for the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration eventually sent men to the moon. Von Braun died in 1977 without ever seeing his Nazi past investigated.

Urges Stem Cell Research Rethink

Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve urged resident Bush on Sunday to rethink his opposition to controversial stem-cell research that might hold hopes for a cure.

Reeve, best known for his title role in the "Superman" movies, congratulated the British government on its "courageous" decision to allow research on stem cells from various sources, including embryos.

He said U.S. opinion polls showed 70 percent of Americans supported stem-cell research for medical reasons.

Scientists have found stem cells have the capacity to change into different types of cells, which might be a key to developing treatments for illnesses from cancer to Parkinson's disease.

Last year, Bush placed restrictions on federal funding for the research, which is opposed by a variety of U.S. groups, including the influential Christian right. Opponents object in particular to harvesting stem cells from human embryos.

Another 'Reality' Series

'The Surreal Life'

The upcoming WB reality series "The Surreal Life" has lined up the kind of dream cast that nightmares are made of.

Marquee names such as rapper M.C. Hammer, Emmanuel Lewis of the 1980s sitcom "Webster," Mindy Cohn from "The Facts of Life," rocker Vince Neil of the band Motley Crue and former "Baywatch" babe Brande Roderick are on board to move into a house and have their lives taped round-the-clock, ala "The Real World."

The show, produced by Brass Ring Prods. and Mindless Entertainment, will follow the notorious pop culture figures as they room and work together in the San Fernando Valley for two weeks. The cast falls somewhat short of A-list status.

"Surreal," originally slated to air this month, was pushed back to midseason to give producers more time to cast the series and set up camp. The WB ordered six episodes of the show earlier this summer.

LA Times Editorial Blasts Disney CEO

Michael Eisner

Embattled Walt Disney Co chairman and chief executive Michael Eisner faced more criticism on Sunday after a Los Angeles Times editorial said his management of the ailing media giant was hurting Southern California.

While the paper noted that Disney has been hard-hit by a tourism slowdown and advertising slump, it said that one man -- Eisner -- shoulders the blame for the company's shortcomings.

The Times said Disney is a direct reflection of Eisner, who has occupied the chairman's office for 18 years, longer than anyone other than founder Walt Disney. Eisner was recruited in 1984 to restore magic to a troubled entertainment kingdom.

He has faced shareholder pressure in recent weeks to map out a succession plan as the company's stock remains depressed by several factors, including theme park performance, difficulties at its ABC television network, which trails rivals NBC and CBS in the ratings, and corporate governance questions.

Maysville Remembers

Rosemary Clooney

She may be gone, but Rosemary Clooney hasn't been forgotten by her hometown, which celebrated the fourth annual music festival named in her honor.

The festival ended Saturday night on a bittersweet note. Clooney had been scheduled to perform in what would have been her first appearance since being treated for cancer.

Her brother Nick Clooney, who took the stage to introduce a film tribute, said there was never any question of canceling the festival.

Other family members who attended included actor George Clooney, her nephew; actor Miguel Ferrer, her son; and Dante DiPaolo, her husband.

Pleads Innocent

Vince Neil

Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil pleaded innocent to a misdemeanor battery charge for allegedly attacking a record producer outside the Rainbow Room nightclub in West Hollywood.

Neil was not required to be present at Friday's hearing in Beverly Hills Superior Court. His lawyer, Sara Kaplan, entered the plea on his behalf. A pretrial hearing was set for Nov. 19.

The charge stems from an altercation between Neil and producer Michael Schuman in the nightclub's parking lot on April 28.

Rocks Afghanistan

Joan Jett

Wearing black boots, camouflage pants and a fishnet top, American rocker Joan Jett performed for several hundred soldiers at the U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan.

About 500 coalition troops, mostly Americans, attended a concert Friday night in an airplane hangar with automatic weapons slung behind their backs.

Jett saved her top hits, including "I Love Rock and Roll," for last. After the first show ended, troops shouted for more, and Jett returned to perform an encore — a song called "Everyday People."

Opening Delayed

The Museum of Sex

It will be a case of delayed gratification for those keen to check out The Museum of Sex, which has put off its much-anticipated opening for a week due to construction delays.

The museum, which was set to open on Saturday, was not able to mount several of its exhibits in time for the inaugural show, "NYC Sex: How New York City Transformed Sex in America."

Hundreds of people were turned away, but were offered a new come-on by museum officials, who said they would take off more than $4 from the $17 admission price if they would come next week instead.

Scotland's Worst Poet

William Topaz McGonagall

Scotland's worst poet was remembered Friday with a new walkway dedicated to his memory beside the river he immortalized in his mangled meter.

The first verse of William Topaz McGonagall's poem, "The Railway Bridge over the Silvery Tay," has been engraved in stone along the new McGonagall walkway by the River Tay in his home city of Dundee.

"Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay!/ With your numerous arches and pillars in so grand array/ And your central girders, which seem to the eye/ To be almost towering to the sky," does not lightly trip off the tongue, but many Scots love their purveyor of worst verse.

Dundee already has a McGonagall Square with a plaque commemorating the poet, and the public library has a good collection of his works.

The self-taught son of an Irish cotton weaver, McGonagall was born in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, but worked most of his life as a hand loom weaver in Dundee's jute mills.

He was paid for his work just once, for a Sunlight Soap commercial that read, "You can use it with great pleasure and ease/ Without wasting any elbow grease/ And when washing the most dirty clothes/ The sweat will not be running from your nose."

Sequel Planned

'Easy Rider'

Producer Lauren Lloyd, whose credits include last year's ribald comedy "Freddy Got Fingered," has hopped on "Easy Rider A.D.," the sequel to Columbia Pictures' 1969 classic starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson.

Lloyd's Sony-based company will produce the project, currently being written by Sean Jacques.

The sequel begins with Wyatt "Captain America" Earp -- originally played by Fonda -- alive but in prison, falsely accused of the murder of George Hanson (Nicholson). A new character aims to prove him innocent and the duo then sets out "in search of America" once more.

No distribution is in place for the sequel, but Glenn Tobias, who acquired the rights to the iconic "Easy Rider" title, is funding the sequel's development and production.
