Daniel Dockery: 6 Myths About Body Builders That Are Total BS (Cracked)
Recently, my girlfriend decided to participate in bikini competitions, which means that I would be entering what I imagined in middle school to be my own, personal seventh circle of hell. I'd be surrounded by bodybuilders, leading to my head being eventually engulfed in a swirl of toilet water, as someone shouted from above "Look, he was carrying a novel in his cargo shorts pocket! Who the fuck is Junot Diaz, and why does he deserve to be crammed in this dumb geek's asshole so badly?"
Adam Wears: 5 Companies Whose Ad Campaigns Just Backfired Horrifically (Cracked)
Hey, remember when American Apparel's official Tumblr tried to celebrate the 4th of July with a picture of some nice fireworks but accidentally posted a photo of the Challenger explosion instead? Which didn't even happen in July. Can you imagine if every company was that dumb? Well, you don't have to imagine! In this era of large corporations putting their entire online reputation in the hands of whichever intern can remember the Twitter password, "stumbling ass backwards into controversy" is the rule, not the exception.

Stephen Valentine Patrick William "Steve" Allen (December 26, 1921 - October 30, 2000) was an American television personality, musician, composer, actor, comedian, and writer. Though he got his start in radio, Allen is best known for his television career. He first gained national attention as a guest host on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. He graduated to become the first host of The Tonight Show, where he was instrumental in innovating the concept of the television talk show. Thereafter, he hosted numerous game and variety shows, including The Steve Allen Show, I've Got a Secret, The New Steve Allen Show, and was a regular panel member on CBS' What's My Line?Source

In Dave Marsh and Kevin Stein, The Book of Rock Lists, 1981 (The first edition), Allen is the first entry on the Rock and Roll Enemies list (page 422).
Deborah replied:
I didn't realize that "The Tonight Show" has been around longer than I have, nor that Jack Paar was not the original host. The original host was Steve Allen.
The things I learn, thanks to your trivia questions.
Randall responded:
Didn't have to Google this one, Marty:
I'll bet a lot of people said Jack Paar, but it was
Steve Allen
Steve Allen was creative as all get-out.
He was funny and witty and was a brilliantly innovative piano player, writing many many songs.
He was an author of many books.
DJ Useo answered:
I can confidently say Steve Allen is the answer.
I only know of his public career, but he comes off really great.
He really seems to have a mastery of so many areas of entertainment.
I like to watch the game show "What's My Line?", & when Steve is a guest panelist, he rules.
Many has been the time I've seen him discern the person's employment in only one long string of questions.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is

Muhammad Ali was on the ropes for refusing induction into the Army, and Jim Brown wanted to help. But first, the NFL great wanted to hear the boxing champion's reasons for not answering the call to military service during the Vietnam War.
So Brown led a group of prominent black athletes who hit Ali with a flurry of questions during a two-hour meeting in Cleveland in June 1967. Ali didn't duck the questions and stuck to his principles, citing his religious beliefs in refusing to join the military.
The dozen athletes, including Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, emerged from the meeting to publicly support Ali at a time when the champ was one of the country's most polarizing figures.
Nearly 50 years after the meeting, now known as the ''Ali Summit,'' several participants including Brown and Russell were at Ali's side again Saturday night in the boxing champ's hometown. Brown received a lifetime humanitarian achievement award bearing Ali's name.

For 17 years, Bob Dylan's lyrics have been showing up in rather unlikely places.
"Articles we have written about research by others, book introductions, editorials, and things like that," Eddie Weitzberg, a professor from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, confessed. "We're not talking about scientific papers - we could have got in trouble for that."
Weitzberg and his colleague, John Jundberg, began what's become a quirky tradition of Bob-Dylan oneupmanship when they wrote a piece about gas and titled it, "Nitric Oxide and inflammation: The answer is blowing in the wind." The duo thought it was a funny - and fun - little secret, so they kept adding snippets of Dylan songs into their work.
A few years into the practice, The Local reports, Weitzberg and Jundberg invited their colleagues to join the competition. The pun-loving group expanded to include five scientists, who plan to keep the game up until retirement. The prize for the professor who pulls off the most Dylan references? One free lunch.
A restored one-room schoolhouse where Tina Turner attended classes opened Friday as a museum honouring the singer's career and recalling her childhood in this small West Tennessee town.
More than 100 people attended an opening ceremony, ribbon cutting and tour of the Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School, located on the grounds of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville. The museum features gold-and-platinum records and glittering outfits and dresses worn during performances by Turner, whose Grammy-winning singing career includes hit songs "Nutbush City Limits," ''Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got To Do With it."
Turner, who lives in Zurich, Switzerland, did not attend the ceremony, but she recorded a video that was played for those in attendance. Turner said she did not attend because she has problems with flying long distances.
Private donations, including a sizable one from Turner, and public funds helped pay for the $300,000 restoration of the school, said Sonia Outlaw-Clark, executive director of the Delta Heritage Center. The school is seen as a symbol of the values of education, family and hard work possessed by area residents.

An Ohio man who raised $55,000 in a joking crowdfunding appeal to pay for his first attempt at making potato salad threw a huge public party Saturday that promised "peace, love and potato salad."
PotatoStock 2014 was held in downtown Columbus and featured bands, food trucks, beer vendors and, yes, plenty of potato salad. With more than 3,000 pounds of potatoes, the charity-minded party was open to people of all ages.
Zack Brown had jokingly sought $10 on Kickstarter in July to buy potato salad ingredients, but his mission drew global attention and earned tens of thousands of dollars.
Brown is partnering with the Columbus Foundation to support charities that fight hunger and homelessness. The account started with $20,000 in post-campaign corporate donations and will grow after proceeds from PotatoStock are added.
First Italy fought its mafia mobsters by confiscating their wealth. Now judges are taking away something more precious: their sons.
Riccardo Cordi', a shy 18-year-old scion of one of Italy's most notorious mob families, is a pioneer in a new strategy to fight the mafia by exiling crime clan sons from their homes and families. Riccardo is the first of about 20 sons sent into a kind of rehab away from the mob by juvenile courts in the southern region of Calabria, home to the dangerous 'ndrangheta syndicate.
By age 16, Riccardo seemed destined to go the way of his father, a reputed boss gunned down in a turf war, and three elder brothers in prison on mafia-related convictions. Their photos line the wall of the fortress-like Cordi' home in Calabria, seen in an exclusive visit by The Associated Press, in a testimony to the rule of blood in the powerful 'ndrangheta.
But when Riccardo was charged with attempted theft and damage to a police car, judge Roberto Di Bella followed up his acquittal with a startling order: The 'ndrangheta family prince would be sent away to Sicily until he turned 18.
The judge put Riccardo under the wing of a fledgling psychologist, Enrico Interdonato. The psychologist had helped launch a courageous band of youths who encourage Sicilian business owners to stop paying "protection" money to the Mafia.

Lebanese army supporters protested outside and then stormed the Beirut offices of Qatar-owned satellite channel Al-Jazeera Sunday, after a journalist published tweets ridiculing the military, the National News Agency said.
"A large number of citizens gathered outside Al-Jazeera's offices in Beirut," said the agency, adding that some protesters "peacefully entered" the building and "chanted pro-army slogans".
They also demanded that journalist Faisal al-Qassem, resign.
The protest came after he published photographs on Twitter showing top Lebanese singers performing in praise of the army, alongside a picture of rows of Syrian men rounded up in a raid on Thursday in the restive border town of Arsal.

A group of Brigham Young University students is protesting the Mormon church-owned school's ban on something its namesake once sported: a beard.
About 50 students, some donning paper beards, biked, skateboarded or rollerbladed their way from the Provo City Library to campus during the "Bike for Beards" protest on Friday night.
Brigham Young and many other early leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grew beards as they aged. A statue of Young in downtown Salt Lake City depicts him with a beard, but another at BYU shows him clean-shaven.
The BYU Honor Code, created in the 1940s, states that "men are expected to be clean-shaven" and beards are not acceptable. But students can be exempted from the prohibition if they have a medical condition such as scarring.
Among other things, the university's mandatory student contract also forbids premarital sex, alcohol consumption and tattoos.

To catch a Philadelphia municipal judge they suspected of corruption, FBI agents invented a defendant - complete with a staged arrest and court appearances.
Court documents from Judge Joseph Waters Jr.'s guilty plea Wednesday to federal mail and wire fraud charges include details of the bogus arrest of a man named David Khoury for illegally carrying an unloaded Glock .40-caliber pistol during a 2012 traffic stop, The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/1votQwe) reported.
According to the documents, an unnamed campaign donor asked Waters to help Khoury, describing him as a cousin of a business associate.
Waters then called a fellow judge who was scheduled to hear the case. According to Waters' plea document, he identified Khoury as a friend and asked the judge hearing the case to help him.
The fake 40-year-old defendant was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, a felony. He told officers that he did not know his address and had no phone. He told probation officers he was from Louisville, Kentucky, and gave a Social Security number that appeared to have been issued in Texas in 1988. His black SUV had Virginia plates.
