Trivia Question from Yesterday

What is the national mammal of the United States?

       Bison                                                      Source

The American bison or simply bison (Bison bison), also commonly known as the American buffalo or simply buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed North America in vast herds. Their historical range, by 9000 BCE, is described as the great bison belt, a tract of rich grassland that ran from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, east to the Atlantic Seaboard (nearly to the Atlantic tidewater in some areas) as far north as New York and south to Georgia and, according to some sources, down to Florida, with sightings in North Carolina near Buffalo Ford on the Catawba River as late as 1750. They nearly became extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle. With a population in excess of 60 million in the late 18th century, the species was down to 541 animals by 1889. Recovery efforts expanded in the mid-20th century, with a resurgence to roughly 31,000 animals today, largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves.

Spanning back many centuries, Native American tribes have had cultural and spiritual connections to the American bison, and it is the national mammal of the United States.

The term buffalo is sometimes considered to be a misnomer for this animal, and could be confused with "true" buffalos, the Asian water buffalo and the African buffalo. However, bison is a Greek word meaning ox-like animal, while buffalo originated with the French fur trappers who called these massive beasts bœufs, meaning ox or bullock-so both names, bison and buffalo, have a similar meaning. The name buffalo is listed in many dictionaries as an acceptable name for American buffalo or bison.        Source

Mark. was first, and correct, with:
   American bison.

Alan J answered:
   Bison.

Randall wrote:
Out here in South Dakota we call 'em BUFFALO

There's a (small) herd about 5 miles west of here and another one about 30 mi north of here. Beautiful animals. They're bigger'n you think.

Cal in Vermont said:
The bison is the National Animal. Not the buffalo. So it might be Bison Bob or Bison Bill. Bison, NY gets lotsa snow. Ha ha, dude, you've been bisoned! There used to be bison soldiers. Some restaurants serve bison burgers. Fun to think about.

Dave responded:
Bison. Also called the Buffalo, the Bison was named national mammal by President Obama, so I expect that Don the Con will soon be replacing it with the Rat. Bison are the largest terrestrial wild animals in North America, bulls can weigh nearly 2,000 pounds.

Kevin K. in Washington, DC, replied:
   David Nunes' cow ?
  No, It's the American Bison.

zorch said:
   The Bison

Ed K wrote:

Adam answered:
   Um- must be The Bison.

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
The American bison was named the national mammal of the United States on May 9, 2016.

Mac Mac replied:
   Bison

Deborah wrote:
Oh, it's got to be the bison.

Anecdotes

Money

• Musician Vicki Randle was the only woman in a band, and one of the males in the band asked her to sew a button on his shirt. She explained to him that she had never learned how to sew buttons because she was a musician. This action by the male sounds bad, but when the males in the band learned that she was making less money than they were, all together the males demanded that the manager pay her more money - as much as the male musicians were individually making.

Mothers

• Bobby Henderson started playing jazz piano professionally by accident. He was at a New York City club called Pod and Jerry's, and the club owner said to him, "Hello, son, can you play the piano?" The club owner then pointed to a man, and said, "That's Willie 'The Lion' Smith you see there. He's one of the greatest piano players playing. Well, Willie's made plenty of money, and Willie's going to move downtown to another spot. … So, play a tune, kid." Bobby was nervous, but he played "I Got Rhythm," relaxed, and played much more. He got the job, and he showed up that night to play for real and for money. He earned $150 in tips - a lot of money at the time. After work, he went home to his mother's house, and he emptied his pockets of all the paper money - 20s, 10s, 5s, and 1s - that he had earned and put the money on the kitchen dresser. In the morning, his mother woke up, went into the kitchen, saw the money, and screamed. Bobby woke up, went into the kitchen, and said, "What's the matter, Mom? House on fire?" He then explained that the money was his tip money from the previous night - he had not stolen it - and he told her to buy some new dresses.

• The Dire Straits had a hit in 1985 with their song "Money for Nothing," which includes a reference to rock stars getting "chicks for free." A woman named Sally wrote in to Ana Samways' always entertaining New Zealand Heraldcolumn Sideswipe, "When I was little and my sister and I were in the car with my mum on a long trip, we also belted out off-key to the Dire Straits hit 'Money for Nothing' and I asked mum why he'd get 'chicks for free'. Clearly wanting to avoid having to explain the wild ways of rock stars, she told us the lyric was 'chips for free' and that when a rock star goes into a fish and chip shop, they have to pay only for the fish!"

Music Videos

• Some of the comments on YouTube about music videos are funny. For example, a video of the Divinyls' hit "I Touch Myself" had 477 likes and 8 dislikes in May 2011. A person who calls him- or herself "Tomdotp" commented, "The 8 people that dislike this song touch themselves a bit too much!" And a person who calls him- or herself "TwilfsMind" commented about the video, "It's not about masturbation. It's about looking into your soul and finding out who you really are […] Just kidding it's about Masturbating."

• When the Ramones made the music video for their song "Pet Sematary," they filmed it in Tarrytown, New York, at the Sleepy Hollow cemetery, which is famous as the setting of some Washington Irving short stories, including "Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Among the celebrities appearing in the video were Deborah Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Ramones producer and co-writer Daniel Rey, the Cycle Sluts from Hell, and their dogs: the Cycle Mutts from Hell.

Wisconsin

Farm Aid

Farm Aid 2019 was held at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy on Saturday. The sold-out festival was packed full with 30,000 people attending.

The lineup included big names like Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, and Bonnie Raitt.

A state report found Wisconsin lost about 700 dairy farms in 2018. Jim Goodman retired earlier than the Wisconsin farmer had planned. He had to sell his dairy herd and farm.

Many farmers speaking at Farm Aid said the best way people can help them is to buy local.

The annual festival travels across the county and has raised $57 million for family farmers since they started the event in 1985.

'Stairway to Heaven' Goes to Court (Again)

Led Zeppelin

The music business will experience collective déjà vu next week when Led Zeppelin goes back to court facing claims that it ripped off its signature "Stairway to Heaven" from Spirit's "Taurus." But this time, the stakes are much higher.

After being tossed through years of flip-flopping decisions, the "Stairway to Heaven" case - in which Michael Skidmore, a trustee representing the estate of Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe, is accusing Led Zeppelin of stealing its 1971 song's opening guitar riff from Spirit's 1968 instrumental track - will come before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco for en banc (full court) arguments on Monday, September 23rd. While jurors in the original case had decided in 2016 that "Stairway" did not infringe on "Taurus," a Ninth Circuit panel ordered a new trial in 2018 due to errors in the jury instruction process.

The trial has gained much new attention since - especially as music copyright cases have exploded in number, with cases against Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" and Ed Sheeran's smash hit "Thinking Out Loud" among numerous, high-profile examples. Now, all eyes are on the Zeppelin-Spirit case because of both the iconic nature of the central song and the broader framework on how copyright law can be applied to music going forward.

In the original Zeppelin-Spirit trial, a U.S. district judge had told jurors that "common musical elements, such as descending chromatic scales, arpeggios or short sequences of three notes" are not protected by copyright - but the Ninth Circuit panel ruled that they should have been told notes can sometimes be copyrighted if they are selected and arranged in an original way.

Whatever outcome emerges from the Zeppelin-Spirit case is also likely to have broad ramifications outside of music, which is why lawyers from various industries are watching the case with interest. "The Ninth Circuit will be forced to consider the amount of expression that's required in order to constitute something that's protectable," Lewis says. "In music, that's things like a descending chromatic scale. But there are analogs in all sorts of different areas - for example, in software, when is a specific line of code copyrightable? In the choreography space, when does a series of steps become copyrightable? Litigators and practitioners are hopeful that this en banc opinion will establish more clarity going forward."

Paris Show

Tutankhamun

A blockbuster Tutankhamun show set a new all-time French record Sunday, with 1.42 million visitors flocking to see the exhibition in Paris, the organisers said.

The turnout beat the previous record set by another Tutankhamun show billed as the "exhibition of the century" in 1967, when 1.24 million queued to see "Tutankhamun and His Times" at the Petit Palais.

"Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh" -- which has been described as a "once in a generation" show -- will open in London in November.

The last time a show of comparable size about the boy king opened there in 1972 it sparked "Tutmania", with 1.6 million people thronging the British Museum.

The Egyptian Ministry for Antiquities said this was the largest number of Tutankhamun artefacts ever to have left Cairo.

Weather Radar Picks Up

Dragonfly Swarm

An enormous mystery cloud has baffled US meteorologists this week who spotted the shape stretching over parts of Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, but saw no rainfall.

The National Weather Service spotted the "conundrum", and suggested it could be a swarm of "bugs", however the altitude was so high, they were initially sceptical such a massive number of creatures could be flying so high.

NWS Wakefield said on Twitter: "No rain around the region with decent returns on radar. Usually we'd think we're seeing bugs. Dual polarization radar products argue otherwise and some of these returns are above 10,000ft".

Another National Weather Service station in Cleveland also picked up the huge cloud and asked users on Twitter to guess what was causing it.

The species is reportedly the common green darner - named due to their resemblance to a darning needle. They fly south at the end of the summer, following their prey - mosquitoes and flies - to warmer climates in the southern states and central American countries.

Lawsuit Backlash

Montana

A woman who is suing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection after an agent questioned her and a friend for speaking Spanish in a convenience store said Friday the backlash to their lawsuit has forced them to move away from their small Montana city.

Ana Suda and her family have been harassed by neighbors, strangers and even schoolchildren in the city of Havre ever since a video of a border agent questioning her and Martha "Mimi" Hernandez was uploaded to YouTube, Suda said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. One version of the video has been viewed more than 123,000 times since February.

Suda and her two children have been living with relatives in El Paso, Texas, for the past 1 ½ months while her husband - a Customs and Border Protection employee himself - is seeking a job transfer to join them.

Hernandez has been living in Great Falls but still commutes to her job in Havre, said their attorney, Alex Rate of the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana.

The women, who were born in the U.S. and are citizens, said in their lawsuit that they were speaking to one another in Spanish while standing in line to buy eggs and milk in a convenience store in Havre. The agent, Paul O'Neill, entered the store, overheard them and kept them in the parking lot for approximately 40 minutes while he checked their identifications.

Finally Closed

Three Mile Island

The last reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania was finally shut down Friday, marking the end of the operation of the site of the worst civilian nuclear accident in US history.

The plant's first reactor -- which went online in September 1974 -- was shut down at noon local time (1600 GMT), according to the plant's owner Exelon, and the site will be dismantled in the coming weeks.

On March 28, 1979, the second reactor experienced a cooling problem that -- coupled with a human error -- resulted in the partial melting of the reactor and the evacuation of 14,000 people.

There were no casualties, but the incident led to the definitive closure of the reactor and reopened the debate on the potential danger of civilian nuclear power.

Pennsylvania officials had unsuccessfully attempted a bailout, but Exelon decided to close ahead of the end of the license because the plant had been in deficit for many years.

Swiss Hold Wake For Glacier

Pizol

Dozens of people will undertake a "funeral march" up a steep Swiss mountainside on Sunday to mark the disappearance of an Alpine glacier amid growing global alarm over climate change.

The Pizol "has lost so much substance that from a scientific perspective it is no longer a glacier," Alessandra Degiacomi, of the Swiss Association for Climate Protection, told AFP.

The organisation which helped organise Sunday's march said around 100 people were due to take part in the event, set to take place as the UN gathers youth activists and world leaders in New York to mull the action needed to curb global warming.

Dressed in black, they will make the solemn two-hour "funeral march" up the side of Pizol mountain in northeastern Switzerland to the foot of the steep and rapidly melting ice formation, situated at an altitude of around 2,700 metres (8,850 feet) near the Liechtenstein and Austrian borders.

Once they arrive, a chaplain and several scientists will give sombre speeches in remembrance of the glacier, accompanied by the mournful tones of alphorns -- a 3.6-metre (12-foot), pipe-shaped wooden instrument.

Lose Their Hair

Babies

The first weeks and months of a baby's life are full of big changes. But what new parents may not have expected are the tiny hairs left on their newborn's mattress. After a few months, their baby's once-full head of hair has become thin and patchy - or nearly bald.

Fortunately, infant hair loss is rarely a concern. A fetus starts growing hair during the first trimester. But whether an infant is born with a layer of fuzz or a thick mop, all lose at least some hair. In fact, hair loss simply means an infant is making the huge adjustment to life outside the womb.

On an adult's head, each strand of hair goes through a phase when it's growing and when it's not - and when hair isn't growing, it can also shed. At any given time, only a small percentage of your hair is in this latter stage, and only about 50 to 100 strands are lost per day. Not so for a newborn.

"Big hormonal shifts happen in a baby's body after they are born, which can cause all of their hairs to enter the resting phase at the same time," explained Sage Timberline, a pediatrician at the University of California, Davis, Children's Hospital in Sacramento, California. That means all of a baby's hair can shed at once.

Both mother and baby undergo huge hormonal shifts during labor, which is necessary for a successful birth. The onset of labor alerts a baby's body to start producing hormones that are crucial for life outside the womb. Some hormones help the baby's arteries and veins develop, ensuring that the organs receive ample blood during labor and after the umbilical cord is cut, Timberline told Live Science.

Weekend Box Office

'Downton Abbey'

Raise your tea cups! The big-screen encore of "Downton Abbey" handily (but very politely) thumped both Brad Pitt's "Ad Astra" and Sylvester Stallone's "Rambo: Last Blood" in theaters over the weekend in one of the more unlikely box-office upsets.

"Downton Abbey" debuted with $31 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday, royally trumping the $19.2 million-opening for "Ad Astra" and the $19 million debut for "Rambo: Last Blood." Neither the draw of Pitt in space nor a bandanna-wearing Stallone could match the appeal a tea party with old friends.

That trio of new releases outperformed a pair of strong holdovers. After two weeks at the No. 1 spot, Warner Bros.' "It Chapter Two" slid to fourth with $17.2 million. The STX's stripper tale "Hustlers," starring Jennifer Lopez, earned $17 million in its second weekend.

Those very divergent options in theaters added up to a lot of choice for moviegoers. The weekend was up 30% from the same frame last year, according to Comscore.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.

    1. "Downton Abbey," $31 million ($10 million international).
    2. "Ad Astra," $19.2 million ($26 million international).
    3. "Rambo: Last Blood," $19 million ($9.1 million international).
    4. "It Chapter Two," $17.2 million ($21.3 million international).
    5. "Hustlers," $17 million ($3 million international).
    6. "The Lion King," $2.6 million.
    7. "Good Boys," $2.5 million.
    8. "Angel Has Fallen," $2.4 million.
    9. "Overcomer," $1.5 million.
   10. "Hobbs & Shaw," $1.5 million.
