• When the parents of author Michael Thomas Ford divorced after a long marriage, his mother — who had run away with another man — sent his father a long list of items that she said she would come by and pick up. She also included a much shorter list of items that she would allow him to keep. After receiving the letter. Mr. Ford’s father spent a lot of time in the horse barn. Soon, Mr. Ford’s mother came by and loaded up a huge U-Haul truck with stuff she and her husband had accumulated together during 35 years of marriage, and she also loaded ten heavy boxes labeled “Dishes” and “Garden Stuff,” leaving behind a piano she didn’t have room for. After she had left, Mr. Ford’s father had a big smile on his face, and Mr. Ford asked him why. His father replied, “Did you see those big cardboard boxes? The ones marked ‘Dishes’ and ‘Garden Stuff’? I put those there. They were filled with bags of horse sh*t taken from the barn.”
• The ancient Greek poet Ibykos (who lived in the 6th century B.C.E.) was said to have been murdered by robbers. Before dying, he exclaimed to the robbers that some birds — cranes — nearby would be his avengers. The robbers laughed at him and murdered him anyway. When the robbers entered a city later, one of the robbers saw some cranes and shouted, “Look — the avengers of Ibykos.” This aroused the curiosity of the citizens of the city, who — after investigating and discovering that the robbers had murdered Ibykos — put the robbers to death.

• When he was a young boy, young people’s book author Walter Dean Myers went with some other boys to a church gym, where they hoped to play full-court basketball. They were disappointed when they found half of the court occupied by girls who danced, then stretched. The boys made what they thought were appropriately disgusted comments, and the girls made a deal with them. If the boys could do the stretching exercises that the girls were doing, the girls would leave and allow the boys to play full-court basketball, but if the boys could not do the stretching exercises, then they had to perform the dance routine with them. The boys accepted the offer, but they quickly discovered that none of them were limber enough to do the stretching exercises that the girls were doing. The girls made the boys live up to the deal they had made — the boys had to perform the dance routine with them.

I know I’m late; we’ve had company and a busy weekend that felt more like normal than anything we’ve done since the Before Times, and it was what all of us needed. The world is still insane right now, but we got a taste of what it used to be, and it was glorious.
I have not encountered the word “fauci” in my Duolingo lessons, but a cursory search shows it’s also the name of a sickle. So, there we are.

"Schitt's Creek" entered the 72nd Emmys having never won anything. It left taking everything, becoming the first comedy program to sweep all seven of the major series prize categories.
Cast members Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy won the lead and supporting acting Emmys, the first time that has happened.
Dan Levy also won Emmys for writing and directing (sharing the award with Andrew Cividino) and took another Emmy as a producer when "Schitt's Creek" won best comedy series. He shared that prize with his father, Eugene, with whom he co-created the show.
Earlier in the week, "Schitt's Creek" won Emmys for contemporary costumes and casting for a comedy series, giving it a total of nine wins — another record, eclipsing "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," which had won eight in 2018 and 2019.
The wins — celebrated together by the show's cast and crew — capped an unlikely Emmy trajectory. The series premiered on the little-known Pop network in 2015 as a straightforward fish-out-of-water comedy about the wealthy Rose family — businessman Johnny (Eugene), soap actress Moira (O’Hara) and their adult children David (Dan) and Alexis (Murphy) — who lose their entire fortune, save for ownership of the isolated town once purchased as a gag.
Ahead of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday night, Dave Chappelle won a trio of Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his 2019 Netflix special Sticks & Stones.
As that Saturday ceremony was held virtually, the winners of the Creative Arts Emmys each sent in a video acceptance speech, with Chappelle turning his speech — read in front of a live audience to give it a comedy club feel — into a three-minute bit that slammed critics who gave Sticks & Stones poor reviews.
“Boy, this comes as a complete surprise. I mean, I read all the reviews and they said so many terrible things. That they were embarrassed for me. That I lost my way and wasn’t even worth watching,” Chappelle said. “I hope all you critics learn from this. This is a teachable moment. Shut the fuck up forever.”
Chappelle also thanked his fellow nominees in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) categories — Hannah Gadsby, Patton Oswalt, Tiffany Haddish and John Mulaney — “You guys are an inspiration to me and I’m honored to be nominated with you,” the comedian said. “I’m sorry you didn’t win but who gives a fuck anyway?”
Animated programming has seen a resurgence over the last few decades, particularly when it’s geared towards adult audiences. With the current global health situation, animated programming looks like it will be taking an even greater position in our television landscape. That being said, this year’s nominated shows in the category of Outstanding Animated Program pitted the old guard amongst the new blood.
Upsets are the name of the game for this category with several different critics coming in with different winners. But the ceremony dropped the name of Adult Swim series “Rick and Morty” as winner of Best Animated Program, securing its second win. The series won its first Emmy award in 2018.
Cult classics like “Rick and Morty,” as well as the Fox series “Bob’s Burgers,” are long-running and are regularly cited for their writing and humor. The latter seemed the most likely to pull an upset as Loren Bouchard’s comedy is one of only five shows to ever win the category more than once. Even the dark horse, Netflix’s meme-worthy “Big Mouth,” was leaving many early prognosticators wondering if this category was anyone’s game.
Many had assumed the Netflix animated series “BoJack Horseman” would finally secure an award. The series, about a washed-up animal actor, started in 2014 and closed out its final season in January. The show, which many critics have considered the greatest animated series of all time, was open about discussing toxic masculinity and mortality.
Donald Trump (R-Compromised) has described the moment police shot an MSNBC reporter with rubber bullets amid protests in May as “a beautiful sight”.
At a campaign rally in Minnesota on Saturday, the US president said police actions towards Ali Velishi were also an example of “law and order”, as he praised the deployment of the National Guard to stop demonstrations this summer.
The president’s apparent praise for police violence came four months on from demonstrations sparked by the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota’s largest city, Minneapolis.
Mr Velishi had been struck with a rubber bullet by Minneapolis law enforcement on 30 May, whilst trying to report on protests sparked by Floyd’s death just five days earlier.
“It was the most beautiful thing”, added the president, whose supporters cheered. ”Wasn't it really a beautiful sight? It's called law and order."
Several global banks moved large sums of allegedly illicit funds during nearly two decades, despite warnings about the organizations they were dealing with, BuzzFeed and other media reported on Sunday, citing documents submitted by banks to the government.
The reports were partly based on documents filed by banks and other financial firms with the U.S. Department of Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen), obtained here&origin=spl by BuzzFeed News and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and other media organizations.
The ICIJ reported that the files, which they called the FinCEN files, identify more than $2 trillion of transactions between 1999 and 2017 that were flagged by internal compliance departments of financial institutions as possible money laundering or other criminal activity.
The organizations cited ‘suspicious activity reports’ for the investigation.
A makeup brand faced a storm of criticism on Wednesday for naming a new liquid blush product after Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim Anne Frank.
To promote female empowerment during "Sexual Health Awareness Month," the Hong Kong company Woke Up Like This (WULT) launched its "Face Dab" collection of liquid blushes.
They were named after "inspiring, famous women in hopes to inspire WULT customers to live their dreams and break through gender barriers," Jewish newspaper Algemeiner reported.
The different blushes included "In Woolf's Words" after 20th-century writer Virginia Woolf, "Lift Like Melinda" after philanthropist Melinda Gates, "Viva La Frida" after Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, and "Dream Like Anne" after Holocaust victim Anne Frank.
Hordes of people are descending on fragile Los Angeles-area tide pools to scrape starfish, mussels and other sea life from the rocks, city officials say.
The Los Angeles city attorney’s office announced charges Thursday against 45 people accused of overfishing, fishing without licenses and taking restricted species at White Point Beach in San Pedro.
State game wardens have found crowds of people armed with everything from crowbars to kitchen tongs prying sea life from tide pools at the beach since May, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Most of the violations involve exceeding daily bag limits and fishing without a license, Feuer’s office reported on Facebook. One photo showed 142 pounds of mussels harvested from the tide pools. The daily limit is 10 pounds.
Starfish, which are not allowed to be harvested, have been taken from the tide pools in such numbers that they are now rarely seen, the Facebook post says.
The colorful lights that dance across polar skies create beautiful displays, but they also reveal mysteries about how planets, space, and the sun interact.
Though humans have been observing the aurora for centuries, scientists are still learning about how it works. Just this year, amateur aurora-hunters discovered a new type of aurora that could come from space particles heating Earth's upper atmosphere. A NASA intern also revealed a new type of twisting aurora, which led scientists to a mysterious crunch in Earth's magnetic field.
The lights at Earth's poles continue to surprise researchers, and other planets' aurorae offer hints at how their atmospheres and magnetic fields behave, too.
In January, amateur aurora chasers revealed a new type of aurora that stretches across the sky like fingers. They called it "the dunes."
Unlike regular aurorae, which spread down vertically from main ribbons of light, the dunes' patterns stretch horizontally.
Two extremely rare Javan rhinoceros calves have been spotted in an Indonesian national park, boosting hopes for the future of one of the world's most endangered mammals.
The rhino calves -- a female named Helen and male called Luther -- were seen with their mothers in footage taken from nearly 100 camera traps installed in Ujung Kulon national park between March and August, authorities said in a statement on Sunday.
On the westernmost tip of Java in Banten province, Ujung Kulon is the last remaining wild habitat for Javan rhinos.
After years of population decline, the arrival of the new calves brings the total number of the rare mammals to 74.
