Adam Todd Brown: 5 Subtle Clues Your Favorite Band Secretly Sucks (Cracked)
Sucking, much like talent, is a complex thing with several different levels and degrees of severity. It comes in many forms and is often not as easy to spot as you might think. Rather than an all-encompassing "find a new job" kind of suck, many bands and musicians just have one fatal flaw that keeps them from being mentioned among the true music greats of the world.
Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is a species of nightshade commonly known in British English as aubergine and also known as brinjal, brinjal eggplant, melongene, garden egg, or guinea squash. It bears a fruit of the same name (commonly either "eggplant" in American English or "aubergine" in British English) that is widely used in cooking, most notably as an important ingredient in dishes such as moussaka and ratatouille. As a member of the genus Solanum, it is related to both the tomato and the potato. It was originally domesticated in India from the wild nightshade, the thorn or bitter apple, S. incanum.
The fruit is botanically classified as a berry and contains numerous small, soft seeds which are edible, but have a bitter taste because they contain nicotinoid alkaloids (it is a close relative of tobacco).

The eggplant is actually a fruit that is botanically classified as a berry.
I love eggplant, it is probably my favorite - (what I think of as) vegetable. Eggplants grow well here, so not only do I have them from my garden, but buy them at the market in the winter as well. I stew them (cut up and add a can of stewed tomatoes in a rush), make Eggplant Parmigiana, and stuffed eggplant now and again.

Sorry, my agent called to remind me that contractually I don't have to answer questions about foods I don't like. Particularly when they are things that try to pass themselves off as berries... It's an effrontery to REAL berries (like raspberries) which, if you remember from yesterday, are one of eight required foods this octotroph ingests on a regular basis... It's in the fine print, dontcha know... My agent has EVERYTHING covered.

Chinese authorities have released from jail dissident poet Shi Tao who was convicted based on information provided by US Internet giant Yahoo!, a rights group said Sunday.
Shi was released 15 months before the end of his 10-year sentence for leaking state secrets after he sent an email overseas containing information on a crackdown on democracy advocates, PEN International said.
Information supplied by Yahoo! was used to help convict him, said a statement from the London-based group, which promotes freedom of expression.
Shi, who also worked as a freelance journalist contributing to a newspaper in the central city of Changsha, could not be immediately reached for comment.

Astronaut Reveals 'Lucky Charm' Floating on Space Station
Chris Cassidy
An astronaut working onboard the International Space Station (ISS) has revealed his "lucky charm" - a miniature toy astronaut figurine - in a video recently sent down to Earth.
"I was going through personal things [that] I have flown for people and came across my own personal item I'd like to share with everybody," NASA astronaut and Expedition 36 flight engineer Chris Cassidy said in the video, which was released online Wednesday (Sept. 4). "This little astronaut guy has seen better days but he has special meaning."
"Before I was selected as an astronaut, I knew I wanted to become one and I somehow came across this guy in a toy set for my kids, or something like that," Cassidy recalled.
To date, Cassidy's lucky charm has logged more than 176 days off the planet - and it still has five more days to go. Cassidy and two of his fellow crewmates are scheduled to depart the space station and return to Earth onboard a Russian Soyuz capsule on Sept. 10.
The Watts Towers are a labor of love, graceful spires built by hand over 30 years in the Los Angeles-area backyard of sculptor and construction worker Simon Rodia.
Since Rodia completed the towers in 1955, conservators have sought to preserve the sculptural forest and its creations of steel and mortar adorned with glass, shells and broken ceramics. Tall cracks, presumably from sun and wind, resist repair efforts, and preservationists worry about shaking caused by the region's frequent earthquakes.
Conservators have made repeated repairs to the Watts Towers in the decades since Rodia finished his masterpiece. But the cracks continue to reopen.
"He knew what he was doing, because there's super redundancy in these structures. But it's not going to stand up for another 50 years unless something logical is done to preserve it," said Bob Nigbor, an earthquake engineer at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The tallest of the 17 towers reaches nearly 100 feet (30 meters) high, and some of the towers are interconnected. Every day, their stiffness varies by 20 percent. (Think of stiffness as similar to rigidity, or the ability to resist being bent or deformed.) "That's huge," Nigbor said of the daily variation. "It's the most I've ever seen."

A Lake Tahoe resort once owned by Frank Sinatra and frequented by his Rat Pack buddies is about to undergo a major makeover.
The Cal Neva hotel-casino that straddles the California-Nevada line will close for more than a year beginning Monday to allow for the multimillion-dollar project.
The 219-room, 10-story hotel and 6,000-square-foot casino will be upgraded in an effort to revive the struggling property, said Robert Radovan, co-owner of Criswell-Radovan. His Napa Valley, Calif.-based development company acquired the Cal Neva in April.
The property has fallen on hard times because of the double-whammy of the recession and competition from Las Vegas and Indian casinos. Its casino was forced to shut down in 2010 due to declining business.
Owners hope to reopen the Cal Neva on Dec. 12, 2014, which would have been Sinatra's 99th birthday. He died in 1999.
It may take a while but it seems that the pay TV business is gradually going the way of dial-up Internet. Business Insider points us to the latest numbers from research firm SNL Kagan showing that cable providers lost 1.8 million pay TV subscribers in the second quarter of 2013.
SNL Kagan's research is just the latest evidence that Americans are increasingly becoming unwilling to pay money for television services when they can instead subscribe to Netflix and Hulu and watch shows over their broadband connections. To get some perspective on this, consider that 1 million cable TV subscribers ditched their pay TV services throughout all of 2011 - the cable industry is now losing almost twice that many over the span of just a quarter.

A 107-year-old man was killed in a shootout with a police SWAT team at a home in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he had earlier threatened two people with a gun, authorities said on Sunday.
When police arrived at the home on Saturday afternoon, they removed the two people from the house and then entered to begin negotiations. Isadore then shot at them through the door, according to the reports confirmed by police.
Negotiations were started and SWAT officers inserted a camera into the room where Isadore was holed up. Officers saw that Isadore had a handgun, according to the reports confirmed by police.
When negotiations failed, SWAT officers threw gas into the room. Isadore fired and officers entered the room. When Isadore shot at them again, the officers returned fire, killing Isadore, according to the reports confirmed by police.
Police said the coroner confirmed Isadore's age as 107.
No officers were injured in the incident, which is under investigation, a Pine Bluff police spokesman said.

City crews in Winnipeg are continuing to capture thousands of rubber ducks that slipped past a containment boom during a weekend fundraising race.
The Assiniboine Park Conservancy says over 13,000 rubber ducks were dropped from a crane into the Assiniboine River on Saturday for The Great Manitoba Duck Race.
But at the end of the race, the conservancy says the oil booms used to capture the ducks failed.
"The current was extremely strong and there was high winds. Because of that, some of the ducks made it over the barrier," said Laura Curtis, a spokeswoman for the conservancy.

The takeover of US pork giant Smithfield Foods by China's Shuanghui International Holdings has received approval from a key US national security review, the two companies announced.
The high-level Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States has approved the $7.1 billion deal, which would put the Chinese company in control of the world's largest swine grower and pork processor, they said.
The committee, which operates under the US Treasury, investigates any major foreign purchase of a US business that could be seen as damaging national security.
But the deal still faces a shareholder challenge. Earlier this week a key investor, Starboard Value, called on other shareholders to oppose the deal, arguing that the company would be worth more if broken up and sold piece by piece.

Canada's cash-strapped national archives may have missed a chance to buy rare maps and manuscripts at bargain prices because years of austerity have severed its special connections with auction houses and private sellers.
That's the lesson being drawn by senior staff at Library and Archives Canada after the agency paid about three times the pre-sales estimate as winning bidder at a spring auction for the Sherbrooke collection.
The rich bounty of Canadian maps and manuscripts from the early 1800s cost the agency about $720,000, including taxes and shipping. Bonhams, the house that conducted the auction in London on June 19, had estimated the value somewhere between $160,000 and $230,000, plus a buyer's premium.
Given only weeks to get organized, the agency went into overdrive, soliciting funds from the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canadian Heritage and others to put together a war chest for the London auction. The fact the collection highlighted the War of 1812, a favoured theme for the Harper government, appears to have loosened purse strings.

A new diet fad claims that replacing one meal a day with mushrooms will help women shed fat, but only in certain parts of the body - the waist, hips and thighs - but not the bust.
The two-week diet, called the M Plan, according to the Daily Mail, has been touted by celebrities such as Kelly Osbourne and Katy Perry.
Experts say that there's nothing magical about mushrooms - replacing one meal a day with any vegetable would help a person lose weight, said Katherine Tallmadge, a registered dietitian, and op-ed contributor to LiveScience.
And the claim about selective weight loss doesn't hold up to science. "There's no evidence that any diet … will help you lose weight in a particular spot," Tallmadge said.
